I got around to putting it together tonight, took only a few hours to get it to work but it needs some tweaking.

Since it would have ended up being more expensive to buy the parts separately and time consuming I ended up just going with a kit.
www.hiviz.com/kits/kits.htm It was about $25 with shipping for a sound trigger and delay unit.

Here's a super quick test shot, seemed to work pretty well. "doesn't work with water droplets, only sharp sounds it seems like"

Pretty sweet Karl!
Hmm, I wonder if you can mod it all to make it even more senstive to sound?

Well first I need to robust it a bit and try tweaking a few things. Then it should be ready for the road.

I'm sure I can mod it to make it more sensitive to a wider range of sounds. It uses a piezo disk for a microphone but if I can get it useing a condenser mic then it should work for a wider range.

those dang piezo disks... condenser mic FTW

ftw "f the world?" lol

well I know there is a way to set it up through a old tape player, but then idk how you'd set up a delay unit with that. The piezo should be for all things exploding or breaking in general and a photogate type trigger would be better for water droplets anyways. So that's my standz

How do the Lightning triggers work? Must be optical right?

I like f the world better, it makes me happy inside.

They either work by interrupting a light signal or a point beam source.

so bad ass karl.
I want to play.

Do you need a condenser mic? I got a few and a mixer with phantom power.

"phantom power"

is that how Ben Affleck beat up all those bad guys in that movie

lol, I got one max

So this is a more final "ish" prototype, not the prettiest, but works. You have to open it up to change the sound sensitivity and delay right now. I'll probably fix that at some point.

That looks really good. I'm confused though. This is used to trigger the camera at the point the sound is made? So you are still limited to your camera's max sync speed?
MOD
Karl W. 9 years ago
It's made to trigger the a flash. So you set you camera to bulb mode in a pitch black room, drop a coin for example and it fires the flash "capturing the stop motion when the sound happens".

if i hook you up with some nikon 10pin(camera) trigger leads... and pc leads, will ya build me one that can trigger both?

just curious...

I think it's possible, I didn't see any info on how nikon triggers work but with canon it looks like it's just a simple on off type deal. Which I don't think would be super hard to add in. There wouldn't be af though.

yeah, i'm not quite sure why they think they need 10 pins for a trigger.... we'll talk about this when its not midnight... and i'm not watching the office on hulu..

I have 2 10 pin leads for a Nikon from old releases if you want them.

When is the "High Speed Strobist" meeting going to take place???
MOD

well it looks pretty basic

I guess I'll try it out on my camera first and see how it goes, it's a little bit different setup for canon, but same idea.

I bet this would work perfectly for a .44 magnum gun shot!

lol, well I could maybe be free to do a high speed strobist thingy the 22nd of feb, but I don't have a location and I still need to do more formal tests with it.
