The Orbis flash is basically the same design, just a lot more polished. You can set this on a light stand. IMHO it gives you more options. Put it up close to the subject and step far a way to use a long lens. You can't do that with the Ray Flash on Camera.
I've made two rings lights. The tejada version worked far far better and was more solid than my other one. They have the work lights at menards for 10 bucks. Then I expoyed a tube that my lens fit through. Works great for indoor stuff, but unless it's starting to get dark, they are death in sunlight
I got a gig shooting a holiday party, and with that money I'm going to get an alien bee ring flash. I'm in love with the ring flash look.
mine is close to completion, but jake went for it right away and came up w/ a pretty good one
i know jake has a shot of josh he used it w/ in his photostream and i think i have a few pics of jake and his creation in my camera, so i'll post those as soon as i go through the pics...if i do have such a picture
Here's a tip for the dudes who made them, if you have one with one flash, and you have the flash on the bottom of the ring (so there is more light from the bottom) you get more of that 'ring flash look'. Just some little thing I picked up on strobist.
