The future

aka your future. I know there is a wide age group in the dpg, but for the most part we're all still young (and at least young at heart).

So what are your plans for the future, if your in school what are you gunning for? What are your photographic goals, what are your plans and dreams?

Let's hear it.

ps, drew's thread spurred this up, and I thought this would provide us with some nice civil conversation ;-)

I would love to go pro someday, but am not going to rush into it at this point in my life. I am fortunate enough to have a good day job that pays my bills and affords me the time and resources to hone my skills, since I don't work nights or weekends.
So, hopefully I can ease into it, but I also like the idea of keeping the day job and using photography as a form of a second income.
So, yeah, I guess I am undecided, but I do know all I think about all day long is photography.

I plan to:

1) Make about 4 million dollars.

2) Retire.

3) Do whatever I want.

I'm with Shawn on that one. I do think about photography constantly, but am willing to accept if I can't make it pro. I can see myself working somewhere nice in a few years, with photo gigs on the side.

As for the school part of it- I just got accepted into the Digital Arts and Photography program here at UMD. We had to do a portfolio review last Friday, and I was surprised they made their decision so fast.

Nice Laramie! No surprise you were accepted. Congrats Dude.

The rough part about it was that I was only able to use in-school stuff, and pretty much all of my stuff on here is out of class. I emailed my profs right after thanking them for the review, and gave them my flickr page too... I think that helped out a bit.

I'm on the Lartigue plan for photographic fame.

I'll just keep shooting daily happenings for sixty-four years and assembling the prints into albums. Then I'll get discovered and be famous.

2065 is right around the corner, I'd better get to work.

What's strange is, Rachel and I had a conversation about this and already decided that your work will be discovered posthumously.

Me, I'm just gong to keep taking pictures of stuff. And sometimes people. I don't really have a plan aside from that.

I'm gonna keep shooting weddings as a 2nd shooter for another year...then stage a coup and take over the business.

I am hoping in the next year to accumulate the gear needed to light a big wedding, and once i have that i will do my own thing. I have actually been contemplating studio space but at the moment i have access to Alan Johnson studio.

after i'm rich and famous i am going to buy Pentax and run it into the ground, just to mess with Shawn.

I spose I should speak my piece too.
I got accepted into Brown College a few weeks ago and I'll be going there in july for their digital photography degree. I'm kinda excited to live in the cities. As for as after I have no idea but I hope it's something photographic.

HA! Thats great

My plan is to just take photos.

Right now my photographic goal is to just run a small, local business doing what I love. I would be happy if I was regularly getting even one job a month. I'd like to at least make enough to fund my photography habit.

If I can ever get my health back on track I do have bigger plans for my business, but I'm not posting those plans since I know you all will run out and steal them. ;-P

I bought this book out east at the Parson College of Art and Design called "From Pencil to Pen Tool. You use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as part of your software and learning curve. I want to become a master at this book! Example: I can take my photo and turn it into a garment, such as shape or texture. Sometime you have to teach yourself, and for me I have no choice, this class is only taught at selected college around the country. My future consist of have my own studio inside my own future sweatshop. I can compress a photo, but not compress a garment.

Ha! My future lies in PIZZA. I mean really, who doesnt like pizza?! We are scouting for a 4th location in the Duluth area to open up. I get to be involved through the whole process: finding the site, hiring contractors, building and opening. After I get a store opening under my belt I will be heading east, possibly the New England area, to open my own franchise.

I plan to keep shooting, maybe do my own thing some day. My wife wants to open a gallery after we move so I might have an option there. I dunno though, I might want to do weddings, I might not. Maybe senior pics, maybe not. Will I move on to bigger and better things? Maybe, maybe not. I wont stop trying though.

my plans are very similar to drew's. i'm not ready to jump into weddings right away (as i have never shot a wedding aside from a few pics at nate's wedding) but i enjoy taking grad pics and made a fair amount of $ this fall w/ no advertising and know i could make a bit more after putting some advertising $ into it.

once i get the chance to start second shooting weddings for a while, i think i'll take the dive into that. but at this point, it's a finding a job that i can support myself on and trying to build the photo business until i can eventually, someday, drop the day job and simply focus on photography.

Hmm. Wonder if I can break into the market by shooting funerals? Some families spend as much on a burial as they do for a wedding, why not remember that as well?

I took these class last fall, very helpful! Writing a Buisness Plan can be a BIG pain! The class runs once a week for four weeks.
At the end you got yourself a Buisness Plan and a lot of info.

Business plans are also nearly useless, except to impress sources of startup capital. A recent study (which I can't seem to find an article about, now) found that even well researched business plans rarely predict the performance and behavior of a business.

I shoot everything…weddings, grads, family, children, business, wildlife, nature…I would like to tell the story of many creatures in nature through photography books with stories and/or poetry.

I feel that everyone deserves to have pictures to share and every family should have family pictures…

I want to continue to build my photography business to a point that it supports the bills…at that point, I want to figure a plan to take pictures of terminally ill people and their families (before they become frail and wither away). I want to do this for free…I have done this for a few people now and the appreciation they feel is humbling…all I am doing is something that I love to do and gifting them with cherished memories…anyway, that is my long term goal, as odd as that seems…nature, books, poetry and family…I was always told to dream big…if in the end you only reach half of your dreams, you have gone far!
