New to Duluth

MOD

Hey all, I just moved up to Duluth from Dallas, TX and I was just wondering if you guys did meet ups here? I'm looking for some shooting buddy's to have fun with, I could care less how old you are or your gender as long as you like photography and know what you are doing. Anyways, where is there a place to get E-6 developed around here? I used to shoot high school sports for the Dallas Morning News (read by over a million) and shot a bunch of other crap. If you want to chat, meet up, or send me some info, either post here or send me a message! I look forward to meeting some cool new people.
Thanks!

Hello Mr Waphoto! I also just moved to the area and would like to meet up with others.
Im just a beginner that is lacking inspiration at the moment.

Yeah we do meet ups. They're pretty much the best meet ups ever. Last time we had cookies. Age range is quite wide, so you shouldn't feel out of of your class..

E-6, First Photo will handle E-6 these days. Not sure on the current pricing though. Last time I handed them a roll of E-6 120 this summer, it was somewhere in the neightborhood of $9 or so.

Holy crap you guys are quick! I havent shot a roll in a few months, life has been pretty crappy lately so my gear has been collecting dust...When is your next meet up, I would love to come :)
Also, has any lab around here screwed up anyones film? I bulk load my slides into c41 containers most of the time and cross process some stuff...so I would prefer to have it cross processed someplace that you guys dont go (and that may deserve it)....a local cvs in my area got the pleasure of getting a disguised e-6 roll once a week >:)
Anyways, if anyone wants to learn strobes or photoj, I can help you out quite a bit...
Also, does anyone around here have a darkroom? Anyone shoot medium or large format?

I do.

Anyone shoot medium ...

I do.

...or large format?

I do.

A couple of others do as well, but I'll let them reveal themselves

@_@ AWESOME!!! any chance of being able to use it? I have about 30 sheets of agfa 11x14 left over from the move :P
Thats awesome that someone other than me still loves film :) I love to experiment with films...I was in a phase where I shot a bunch of T-bal slides outside so everything turned out blue...but that was awhile ago ;) Ive only shot about 5 pictures with a large format in my life but thats because I've never owned one, my best bud has a nice one that we loved to use...anyways, check my stuff out, I was never really big into flickr, I used other sites but now I suppose I will be on here a lot more often now :P

"I bulk load my slides into c41 containers most of the time and cross process some stuff..."

I do my own cross processing at home. A Kodak Flexicolor kit can be had for ~$60 if you want to give it a shot.

"Also, does anyone around here have a darkroom?"

Oh oh! I've got one :-).

If you're lookin' to rent some time until you inevitably build one in your basement, you can use the art institute down at the depot. I hear it's quite nice, although I've never gone. If you need an enlarger for your own darkroom, I've got a spare that I can probably loan you.

"Anyone shoot medium or large format?"

I shoot MF -- a pair of folders -- but at the moment can't bear the wads of cash I would be burning on 4x5. Someday.

I would be game to go shooting downtown this weekend. Don't expect to get any people, though. This place is a ghost town in the winter.

...Nice to have another film guy.

What possessed you to move from Dallas to Duluth in the bitter cold season?

Congrats on the move.

You'll see how great Duluth really is when you meet all of us. ;)

Welcome to the group. I see you were dissecting my shots already. Thanks for the critiques.

Welcome to both of you. Feel free to have photo gatherings at any time. Just make a post and most likely someone will show. There are lots of events in the near future for DPG from photo outings to meetings to monthly contests to photoshop tip and tec class and so on and so on. It's very cool what this group has become in such a short time. I bet we are one of the more active groups on flickr and great things are becoming of it. So welcome and we look forward to meeting you.

I think you posted this thread on the perfect day, since a lot of us are home because of the ice "storm," if you can call it that.

I am going to refer you to my profile to answer some of your questions.

Welcome to the Guild!

By the way, I would avoid Duluth Camera Exchange or True North Lab for any and all business.
admin
Another welcome to both of you! I shoot digital and know next to nothing about shooting film at this point.

Waphoto, I hope that you enjoy the Duluth/Superior area despite it being a huge change from Dallas. I lived in the Dallas area when I was young for a short time and made a trip back there last year. It is really a great city and everyone is so friendly there.

Wow, there are a lot of film peoples here! I have never shot med or large format. In fact, I have not shot film in 15 years.
WOW! There is so much information in this group. I have been busy for a few hours reading. And I still have some more posts to read, then ill have to be stalker-ish and check out everyones photos. :)

OH, thought I would add that I only have digital right now. I am working with a Canon 30D.
admin
Actually there is only about 4 or 5 film people here. That I know of.

We're gaining. Slowly creeping up on you like a shambling horde of zombies. Then one day, it'll be too late.

I used to shoot film, and I've got a disassembled dark room in my basement. It got too expensive just to shoot I thought, though I'll probably start it up again sometime. Now that I'm actually taking pictures again its rather tempting. :D Plus, zombies are highly entertaining right?

we also have a pretty good number of Canon-ites.

JustinSinks Posted 10 years ago. Edited by JustinSinks (admin) 10 years ago
yay canon-ites! Sometimes i wonder if I made the right decision in choosing canon way back when....

...Then I wake up and remember why I did. ;)

Wow, this is amazing! It's awesome to see this kind of enthusiasm, I really appreciate the welcome!

jnovek: i would rather just pay the $2-3 per roll and just scan them in (i cant use my scanner right now as I don't have the connection on my lappy) I have a folder somewhere, its a 6x9 but I really dont like using it, the holga is much more fun ;)
lcarlsonphotogaphy: I will be a happy camper the day you guys have a meet up! I have nothing but free time right now
shawn t: sorry, i tend to critique more on whats wrong with a photo/what can be done better that what is done well, you have some good work though!
hbrstudios: how often do you do pinhole? do you do print paper or film? you have a nice collection of stuff!
I love my canon but nikon makes some great gear as well, I've used both on numerous occasions and they both have their ups!
thanks a lot for everything, today is horrible outside, i needed 4wd to get up the hill outside my house and even then the back end was squirming around...I might find someplace near to me to shoot today.

HBRstudios Posted 10 years ago. Edited by HBRstudios (admin) 10 years ago
I don't do pinhole nearly as much as I think I should -- and I use my 4x5 field camera exposing film, which is later scanned. Here is one example here

oh thats awesome, i would love to get back into pinhole because it is so much fun and you get such a different perspective...i used 8x10 pearl paper in an oatmeal can for mine though...lots of fun!

Well, World Wide Pinhole Day is only three months away.

This year I think I'm going to convert my Speed Graphic into a massive 15" telephoto pinhole camrea and see what happens. Wide angle is so common with pinhole, figure I'll try it the other way.

HBRstudios 10 years ago
Kip, I have a variety of these micro drilled pinholes made from brass if you want to borrow one.
MOD
waphoto 10 years ago
yah its because its fun!! nothing wrong with liking a near 180 deg view ;) the one i made was almost too wide, it had bad vignetting problems since i shortened the pin-paper distance by about an inch while most people just put the pin right in the outside of the canister i made a flat plate that was set in
admin
K. Praslowicz 10 years ago
No Thanks. I like drilling my own plates.
admin
HBRstudios 10 years ago
Kip, does that mean that you have the micro drill bits??? What sizes?
admin
K. Praslowicz 10 years ago
Actually, It means I have a set of sewing needles, some fine sandpaper, a 2400dpi scanner, and a high tolerance for failure.
admin
HBRstudios 10 years ago
Well, the offer still stands!
admin
Hambone Lewinski 10 years ago
Whoa, HBR, that shot is pretty tight.

I would like to get my pinhole on sometime. You guys will have to toss me some notes/tips.

I did pinhole for my final semester in college, I'll write up some of the stuff I learned later, and scan in some of the work from that project.
