About Me, hmm let's see...
I'm 29. I currently live in Rochester, NY, where I grew up, but over the past ten years I've lived and worked in Ohio, Pennsylvannia, Indiana and Texas. I moved back last year to help my mom recover from a serious illness. I the next year or so I plan to leave one last time, although you never know what time will bring.

One Pooped Puppy

Daily Photo Blog 04-03-07

My best friend, Rob. Now that he's writing on Gather.com, I'm glad that more people are getting to know him the way I do and appreciate his talent (himself included).

On this day he was being a good sport as I dragged him hiking through Taughannock Falls State Park, but finally he spotted a bench and just had to sit. He was one pooped puppy.

Taken with my Kodak V530 Zoom Digital Camera

Yesterday, after playing Donna Reed all day, I realized that I had today off and all my work was done. I was super excited and rather looking forward to a real day of rest. Of course, come this morning I managed to think of a few more things I'd like to get done.

By the afternoon everything was in order and when the began it's lazy downward arc toward the horizon, I had no good reason not to indulge in a sunlit siesta.

The Darkside of Easter
Daily Photoblog 04-07-07

While perusing the isles of Wegmans today I spotted the most amazing thing. Brown peeps! Were these evil peeps that had gone over to the Darkside (Darth Peeper?) or some well tanned hold-overs from Spring Break?

As it turns out, they were neither. These are new cocoa flavored Peeps!

Of course, I had to try them they were new! Even the cashier commented that she hadn't seen these before. I wish I could say they tasted as good as they looked. From an adult's perspective, they were just ok. They tasted rather like something out of a cereal box. I betting kids would love them though and I suppose *sigh* that is the point.

In The Night
The opening tagline for last night's episode of the Dresden Files, was "There are some things even wizards fear" Fear of the unknown, not trusting your senses and fear of a more powerful predator. The catalyst? A living darkness that brought true death to even the immortal. It makes sense. After all, wizards are only human. *wink*

And humans are naturally afraid of the dark. As kids we get teased about it, as adults we use it to frighten each other. At any age, there's something about a lack of light that sets your heart a pounding a little easier. Except once you're an adult there's no night light for the world.

Is it the unknown or being robbed of our primary sense that makes us fear the dark? Either way it's a long ingrained instinct not likely to soon disappear.

In the photo, light from a streetlamp reflecting on the surface of a puddle in my driveway gives the illusion of some dark creature's eye as it watches you in the night.

When The Stars Go Blue

Daily Photoblog 04/10/07

Whenever I hear Tim McGraw sing "When The Stars Go Blue" I can't help but think of my ex. He was crazy, depressed and unstable. He was also loving, generous and vulnerable.

"I walked through the darkness and found a gentle soul,
I walked with him towards the light for I knew the way,
But when the darkness came for me,
He could not do the same,
I tried to lead us both,
But he found an affinity for dark,
And I could not stay,
I had to keep going,
I made it back by leaving him behind,
In the end, it broke my heart, but not my mind."

Cerulean Sleep
Daily Photoblog 04-21-07

Yesterday, after yet another 'turn around shift' I came home and ended up asleep while it was still daylight. I'm not sure sleep is really the correct term for it. My best friend and I call them coma-naps. There is no avoiding them or waking for a good three to four hours. Resistance is futile. Dreams rarely come during this time of sleep. I usually wake feeling rested but always very groggy.

I would worry that something was wrong with me were it not for the fact that this only happens after these back-to-back shifts with only a few hours in between. I am a little bitter about the fact that they schedule us one to three of these each week. It's like stealing more of our lives away in addition to the hours we spend working.

This week I don't have one single set of these killer shifts. It's probably a fluke, but I'll enjoy it while I can.

Odds n Ends
Daily Photoblog 04/23/07

I was walking down the sidewalk at a local shopping center, when I came across this cane haphazardly where it had fallen. It was shiny and new. The sturdy but generic kind you would expect to see in any hospital or nursing home.

No one would simply discard an item so new and needed. I looked around to see who might have dropped it. The normally bustling plaza was deserted. I’d noticed that the parking lot was almost completely empty, but now that I was actually looking for people I realized that there was no one around, save those making a last minute trip the grocery store at the far end of the strip.

It was early in the evening but being a Sunday and the first day where the temperature reached into the seventies I suppose it wasn’t all that odd that everyone was somewhere else.

What was odd was that darned cane. I kept coming back to it. Where did it come from? There are a number of assisted living facilities in the area, so it’s not that strange to find the cane itself. But, how did it come to rest on the sidewalk and what happened to the person who relied on it for support and freedom?

A number of scenarios ran through my overactive imagination. The most popular one, involved a group of the local middle-class ‘thug wanna-be’ kids harassing one of the seniors or disabled folk until they got so worked up that they were forced to flee without their cane. A nagging thought in the recesses of my brain suggested there might have been more of an altercation. That thought both saddened and enraged me. I quickly discounted the likelihood of that particular theory when I could find no blood on the sidewalk or the cane.

There was always the possibility that the person had a medical emergency and the cane got left behind in the haste of an ambulance crew whisking them off to the hospital. As I said, the cane looked very new. Perhaps this person was new to the realm of health demons, ambulances and hospitals. In the fear and confusion of that world, it’s easy to forget even the most important of possessions. After all, they are only things.

More than likely the cane simply fell out of a shopping cart as someone pushed it back to their apartment complex. Either they didn’t realize they’d lost it yet or they were too tired to come back for it.

I decided to leave it where it lay in case its owner decided to retrace their steps in hopes of reclaiming such a valuable piece of their vitality.

I woke this morning still thinking about that artifact and its mysterious owner.

America the Beautiful
Daily Photoblog 04/26/07

Last night while watching the American Idol benefit for The One Campaign, it really hit home how at odds our current American Foreign policy is with the sentiments of the American people.

Our leaders are focused on war, terror, control and fighting what we perceive as the 'darkness'.

That doesn't work. Fight the darkness and it will only creep up on you again when you're not looking. Strengthen the light and it will chase back the darkness on its own.

Imagine for a moment if we devoted the same resources we currently use to fight each other to fighting poverty and disease. (I'll tell you a secret; it's cheaper and a lot safer)

In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote:

I this colorful new diet Coke bottle caught my eye first thing in the morning. I spotted it at Camilles Cafe on Park Ave. Usually, I have to try anything new like that, but I wasn't really feeling like soda yet.

It turned out to be quite an eventful day. Chris and I wanted to do a hiking date, but Mother Nature wasn't having it. Everytime we stopped at a park it started to rain. Finally, we settled for a walk along the canal...

...and that's when it got interesting! We were almost: hit by a car driving on the canal bike path, pushed into the canal, hit by a train and stepped in goose poop!

Later, while picking up some dinner at Weggies, we saw a huge display for this new diet Coke. All, I could think of was that V8 commercial. It's as if I was getting a cosmic bonk on the forehead. "You Shoulda had a Diet Coke Plus!"

I like days like this. Calm, steady, there's stuff to do but without craziness. Average days, if you will. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to Showboat and the rubber duck race this weekend. But, there's something to be said for staying in the moment.

I shot this in macro mode with my Kodak v530 camera. I walked by a couple steps and then actually walked back because this little leaf caught my eye.

Ever Wonder?
Daily Phlog 06-02-07

Ever wonder where fire hydrants come from? Apparently, this one was made in Elmira, Ny. Now I wanna know if all the ones in our town came from the same factory or if they're different each time they install new additional ones.

Early Morning
Daily Phlog 06-03-07

This morning, I'm trying to wake up from a good strong coma-sleep. I worked a set of turn around shifts, then Chris took me to see Showboat. The show was great, but I was whooped afterward. I crashed as soon as I got home and within moments of my head hitting the pillow, I was out. Saying a slept like a rock is putting it mildly, like a boulder would be more accurate.

We're planning to hit Fairport Canal Days this afternoon. Hopefully the rain will hold off. I really want to get some shots of the rubber duck race. Wish me luck!

On A Jet Plane
Daily Phlog 06-04-07

It's a rainy day here and I have to work this afternoon. I wish I was flying out with these folks. The destination doesn't really matter as long as I didn't have to work and got to bring Chris along.

So many lovely colourful spring photos!
What did Chris cook for you on the 31st?
I have never seen Showboat but, have always wanted to.
I love the plane picture.

Showboat was great, long but great. I'd never seen it before either. Now I want to see the movie of course!

The night of the 31st Chris made Mexican Chicken Wraps. Good but not overly fancy, kinda like us.

It's self portrait Tuesday again. I actually snapped this pic on Sunday at canal fest, but I saved it to publish today!

Rogers Farmhouse
Daily Phlog 06-07-07

I was shocked to see a for sale sign in front of the Hosea Rogers house today. I walk by here often and wonder what our town looked like back when it was built in 1852.

I was at the zoo today and didn't realize how close you can get to the alligators. Then again, maybe I was standing somewhere I shouldn't have been.

Lines & Shades

Okay, so I'll admit that it was the turquoise blue awnings that caught my eye, but it's the different angles on each section of roof that's really interesting.

That is a very odd looking plant back a few days ago, no idea at all what it is

Bargains
Daily Phlog 06-11-07 I walked by this clearance rack at wegmans very quickly. For some reason, I can't resist a bargain. Even if it's junk, whether I need it or not. Why is it so hard to say no to stuff on sale?

Dinner Date
Daily Phlog 06-12-07

Tuesday night Chris and I had dinner with my friend Tim. The weather was gorgeous, so we decided to take a chance on outdoor seating at Castaways in Webster. They sat us immediately at a table right on the water. It was perfect!

I mentioned to Chris that some of my Gather friends wanted a gander at him and he graciously agreed to let me snap a shot. He says hates having his picture taken, but I'm intend to change that. This one is ok, but it doesn't really do him justice.

Just Wong
Daily Phlog 06-13-07 I spotted this sign today. There's been some talk recently of a "to wong foo" party this summer, but somehow I don't these folks would handle it too well if a six foot four inch tall drag queen showed up at their Strawberry Social.

Eastman House
Daily Phlog 06-15-07

With all of the interest in pictures, I thought this was a very appropriate shot for this morning. The George Eastman House is here in Rochester, NY. For those of you don't know, George Eastman and his company Kodak, are the reason why most of us in the USA have developed this wonderful point and shoot picture taking culture.

I shot this on Memorial Day after walking through the Ansel Adams exhibit. The weather was absolutely perfect.

I also met Chris's friends Don and Eric that day. It was his birthday and they'd invited us over for a cookout. Tonight the three of us are going to dinner after work.

Woohoo, it's the weekend!

Taking a second or two to see some of the threads that I don't normally...I really like the house with the awnings - I was captured first by the angles and light - good stuff here.

Why were you yelled at by a rent-a-cop? Not for taking a photograph, I hope!

Lazy Morning
Daily Phlog 06-16-07 This morning was one of those lazy mornings. It was around 11 by the time Chris and I finally motivated ourselves to go out for food. We walked around Park Ave for a bit and then it was time for me to head to work, while Chris has the rest of the day to play.

The things you see in NY. I had to snap a quick shot of this today. I thought at first it was a promotional vehicle for a brand or company, but nope there were no markings anywhere on it (well, aside from the obvious).

Me, Unadulterated
Daily Phlog 06-19-07

This was taken last night at ten pm. It's just me in a white t-shirt, mugging for the camera. No editing, no multiple shots. Just me. After all, that's all I can be.

Part of Self-portrait Tuesdays

In The Dark

Daily Phlog 06-20-07

We had a crazy thunderstorm rip through Rochester, NY last night. It left us without power until this morning.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the only storm yesterday and I can honestly say I was 'in the dark' in more ways than one.

But, today is a new day. The sun came up and the power came on.

Daily Phlog 06/21/07

I'm going to lunch with my friend Doug today. I haven't seen him in a few months.

We used to hang out a lot and get into our fair share of trouble, but we always had a blast.

This is my friend Alex. He's coming to Toronto Pride with us this weekend.

Oh yeah, did I mention I'm going to Pride in Toronto this weekend? Read the full story here.
