Man, your photos are great! (but I already knew that) So yeah, I'm interested.

Regarding the tires being there in the morning: You know, here in Cali there is a state mandated tire disposal fee that you have to pay when you replace your tires. So, Donnie Wright, who owns a tire shop here in town, and is kind of a merry prankster anyway, put the good de-mounts out on a rack just like the one in your photo.

He put a sign up that said "FREE TIRES." He told me he figured they'd be gone by morning and he would not have to haul them to the dump and pay the tire disposal fee. But in the morning there they were, every single one of them.

So, being the student of human nature that he is, he took the sign down, figuring he would have to rely on people's love of larceny. The next morning, however it was the same thing. Not one tire had been taken.

Not one to say die, Donnie came up with the scheme that he says cleared every tire out of the rack by morning. I guess he figured he needed to do a little marketing to convince his "customers" that the tires were worth the taking.

He put a crappy chain through the tires, and secured it with a cheap padlock.

3-25: Another reason I'm glad I'm not a fly....

This fellow was about the size of my (spead) hand. (So the photo is just a little bigger than life-size.) I was surprised to see him climbing up my sofa toward me-- fortunately, the camera was within reach, so I didn't disturb him in getting the shot. Take a look at the large size version for the full effect!

Just one of the many delights of living in Taiwan.

LOL at some of the comments, specially sunshinecity glad not to be a spider, Alison scared the pee out of her and your answer to her

Now, that spider is really really scary, I found a dead one today, it was about 5 mm and I thought: I'm so glad you're dead, I'd faint if I saw on like that

And you are very scary too in March 27th, the glance is great

Bamboo at night
4-1: Bamboo at night, seen on my usual walk home. There's a lot of it here, often growing wild. Probably the reason there are so many pandas roaming about, blocking traffic & so on.

Just catching up. Freaky spider picture...I'd be too terrified to get that close to one!

Cute "fortune cat" bank. That's a fun and interesting way to save up for travel. Me...I created a very small savings account at my bank just to dump little bits of money here and there with the hopes that it'll take me to a far away destination one day!

Pandas blocking traffic. That's not something you see everyday in these parts. We have had lions inside the city limits, but nothing like a panda.
ItinerArts 11 years ago
"Fortune cat" is actually a translation of the Chinese "Xaotsai mao," known in Japan as "maneki neko." The variety with one raised paw is more common. In the U.S. and Europe as well as here, they're often seen by the cash register in Chinese restaurants.

4-4: I was finally getting over the flu, so picked up some home improvement supplies and did some weatherstripping. My life so exciting.
bunæn PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by bunæn (member) 11 years ago
I had not considered that there is weatherstripping-worthy weather in Taiwan. Also, it occurs to me that you are young and strong.

For me, at present, the flu and weatherstripping would never overlap in any manner.
ItinerArts Posted 11 years ago. Edited by ItinerArts (member) 11 years ago
Bun-- I'm not so young...a bit old to be expecting a baby, anyway (43).

Taiwan is very humid, so even though it doesn't get very cold, it feels much colder than it really is. (And it feels hotter than the temperature indicates in summer.) The weatherstripping is also to keep the airconditioning inside!

4-9: I'm in Taipei, and a French friend is in Tokyo for 2 weeks. (Haven't see her for 3 years.) Different countries, but at least the same hemisphere. I bought a phone card so I can call her tomorrow. The cards here all feature artworks from local museums; this one is a little unusual.

Talked to her, and she's quite unhappy I can't make it to Tokyo, or she to Taipei. We have many good memories of times together, but not this time. Maybe next year in Paris.
