Hi everyone, glad to finally be on board, I hope to visit your threads and get to know you over the year.
I'm 51, married to Sarah, and we have a daughter, Sophie, not forgetting the two cats Billy and Grace, and a goldfish Lucky, and we all live on the lovely 'Isle' of Portland in South Dorset - venue of the sailing events for the 2012 Olympics!
I am employed as a graphic designer for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.
My New Year's resolution was to take at least one picture a day for 2007 and thanks to the acquisition of my new camera, a Nikon D80 I have been enthused enough to not let it slip. All my daily (plus more) images are on my Flickr space 'petervanallen', and I will to be copying them to my topic, over the next few days.
Addicted to Flickr since signing up here in late November 2006, and spend much too much time in this wonderful place - photography really appeals to my creative side, I promise to keep this up.
What I have initially found strange is that there are over 1500 members, but only 197 topics, have so many failed to even start a photo diary?

See you soon, bye for now...

Hey pal...
Welcome aboard.
Great pictures you have here... it's a pleasure to read through it.

But, I gotta introduce myself properly :
I'm the mean "pain in the ass" cop of the group.
And you're gonna start to hate me right now...
Because one of the basic rule says : only 1 picture/message.
You can post a lot of pictures at once, but it reuqires a different message everytime.
So, I guess, you'e up to some copy/paste time before posting some new photos...
Good luck.
:)

First time visitor here - Congratulations on clever detail in colors and variety of subject. How is the satisfaction level with D80? Bought my wife one for christmas and she loves it. I'll drop round from time to time. Good stuff here -

CollardGreens: Oops
petervanallen 11 years ago
Thanks mate, congratulations on being my first visitor. Got my D80 just after Christmas and couldn't be more happy with it, mind ou I have learned such a lot about technique here on Flickr, and there is still so much more to discover.
I work totally with RAW files now and run the images through 'Photomatix' (which thankfully support the Nikon NEF files) just to spice them up a little and achieve the look I am after.
The D80 is a super camera, I knew I wanted a DSLR, but wasn't sure which one, the Canon Rebel was very tempting, but after I saw some of the images by 'valpopando' and others, I just knew that the D80 was for me.
I have just ordered a Sigma 10-20 wide-angle lens specifically for landscape/buildings shots which will prove invaluable to me as I design and put together the local Weymouth and Portland Tourism guide every year.

Thanks very much for your comments I will try and get around to visiting all the members sites, at least the ones who have a topic,
see you later

Hello All,
you have a new diarist - petervanallen... "threaded" - (Topic #198)

Only joined yesterday but have finally managed to complete the backlog of message-a-day for January's photos with only minimal text to the images, have been keeping an image-a-day going on my space on Flickr so it was just a matter of time to copy them over.

I must admit to not knowing a thing about programming, but can anyone advise me on how to add a calendar to my first page here so that I can make navigation to daily pages easier.

Please drop in and say hello, I am unsure of the etiquette here and I would not want to intrude on anyones thread unless invited.

I welcome any comments or advice on becoming united with this group,

many regards,
Peter
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
Peter - again welcome - good stuff your photos. I have sent you a message on how to create the html necessary for links - at the top of this page click on the mail envelope.

The group is heavily monitored as you can attest and the rules are simple but strict. One medium size photo per message per day (no montages). You can then chat about and visit others, post comments as you like etc. I think you will generally find this a fun group with one thing in mind - to make your photo experience a part of your daily life and share it with others.

You will find that as you post hello notes to other diarys (better check my spelling here on Diary or Dairy never know when to milk or message) and make nice - they will visit...post it and they will come.

On another side - My wife loves her D80 and is gleefully learning how to use it to its fullest. I am sure she will drop by to have a look at your success.

best - CollardGreens: Oops

shadows and lines 2
020207 petervanallen... "threaded"

Well here we are again, I have spent a lot of my day taking photos which is great, I only wish there were more hours in the day. I am learning quite a lot through practice, duplicating successes, avoiding previous mistakes, and learning how to solve problems, capturing light ain't no walk in the park!
The image I've chosen to upload today was taken at Brewer's Quay in Weymouth, the sun was very low and the shadows were great. This was the first time I've used my new lens, the Sigma 10-20 wide-angle, and it's great! I already uploaded the original picture to my space on Flickr www.flickr.com/photos/petervanallen/ and then I downloaded a trial version of Capture NX and tried out a few colour effects and am very pleased with the results, so that's the pic for today.
Back on the MyFuji site www.fujifilm.co.uk/myfuji/ the new competition has opened, the theme this month is 'New Beginnings' and there are some good entries posted already, I still haven't really got a clue what I am going to do yet for this one, but it might include eggs and sunrises - 'A Cracking Day'? - Oh well back to the drawing board.
Hope everyone is well and good and taking lots of pictures, see thee tomorrow.

Let's see - one Peter van Allen posts "capturing light aint no walk in the park" and then proceeds to write the book on a perfect capture by posting 2 Feb ! very nicely done.

You work in photoshop for post processing I recall...I am going to eventually purchase a mac laptop and will load then but for now I have a PC and am using a full version of Nikon Capture 4...they have done a good job with enough features to satisfy. One thing it does is work with raw nef files better than anyone - Nikon knows it's file structure and cameras better than photoshop (this from a photog with both)...so that is my recommendation.

Keep up the posting - I for one (and the timid wife) are really enjoying your talent.

Went for a walk today with Sarah and Sophie, visited the Tout Quarry Sculpture Park on Portland which is only about a mile from our house. From there we walked to the top of the Island and surveyed the wonderful Chesil Beach below us.

I took a few pictures on our walk and I wanted to do the 'Toytown' effect on this one looking down on the small village of Fortuneswell to the north of the island. 'Toytown' is when you give the picture a very short in-focus area to simulate a macro shot, I think it worked ok.

There was a freezing cold wind blowing from the east, when we got back home and had a hot cup of tea it gave me toothache for a couple of hours!

Thank you all so much for dropping in and saying hello

I don't know how to add buddy icons to postings

[stein] - Thank you, I have been experimenting with HDR since Christmas, and there is still so much to learn. It was the Flickr greats like 'Stuckincustoms' and 'Valpopando' that inspired me to have a go. I started with layer masking in Photoshop from one image, to up to 11 graduated exposures using Photomatix, and back again, I think you have to explore as many of the techniques available.
btw your architectural pics are fantastic, especially the nighttime ones.

Meelifluous - Thanks, I love the saturated colours and high contrast achieved by using polarisers and HDR processing, I like your shots, they are all so natural. Does the camera you use allow you to alter the saturations? The typewriter shot has a great depth of field, I also like macros

La Maquisarde - Thank you for your comment, I prefer taking pictures of natural subjects and I find it a little difficult to photograph people, it's something I need to practice. Had a look at your diary, you have some cracking photographs, I think your Male Goldfinch shot is amazing and I love your Heron pictures

glory defined - The 'tripod' pic was an idea that I had for a competition 'New Beginnings' on the MyFuji site. I borrowed the works tripod for 'mother' tripod and then had to find a grassy knoll to set it up on, I still think that I could have got a little closer to 'baby' tripod, that would have improved the composition a little, but I'm quite happy with it.

I hope to drop in and visit everyone over the year, thanks again

020907 gonked!
021007 petervanallen... "threaded"

Well, this morning we (Me, Sarah and Sophie) all went over to the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth to get our annual membership, provided courtesy of a Christmas prize draw. Lots of new attractions there, watched the penguins being fed and marvelled at the new leatherback turtles in the main tank. Afterwards we stopped at the nearest pub for lunch, then did the weekly shop at the local supermarket - yuck!

The image is of one of Sophie's toy gonks, the effect is achieved by duplicating the image on a new layer in Photoshop, invert that layer, then in that layer options choose 'difference' - you can get some mean posterized effects, it works best with skin tones.

022307 Weymouth Esplanade, Day and Night combined

Attempt to combine a day and night shot of the same subject - need a tripod!

Spent a lot of time this weekend uploading old photos to Flickr - Honeymoon and holidays in France mostly.

Love your shot of the Creme Egg, never realised before how photgraphic they actually are. Inspired me to go out and get one myself and take a few shots www.flickr.com/photos/simonkimber/413757267/
