Just returned month-long trip to SE Asia, where I had much opportunity for introspection. I actually picked up a journal and was reminded at how helpful it could be to sort out the muddled ramblings in my brain. A goal I return with is to continue to journal and regularly check in with myself. Take notice of the small day-to-day details that make life so rich.

Do I have something on my face?
It so rarely snows here... from 90 and humid in Thailand, to this two days after coming home! Went to work and found a skeleton crew and a lot of cancellations. I returned home and played with the dogs in the 3-4 inches. Frankie was ecstatic, Henneh was unsure but feeding off of Frankie's joy. The slow day at work was a nice opportunity to get caught up in some of the responsibilities in my new position.

January 17th,
didn't take a photo, it was before I joined this group and I thought I had one for today! Anyway, it was a snow day... poor weather and I went in to work late after a nice slow morning. Slippers and coffee. Melted snow made the evening commute much nicer. Then time for a glass of wine and a movie with Philly... aaahhhh....

Thursdays, oh Thursdays. My day off. Edited and deleted photos from the trip, drank coffee. Did errands, drank coffee. Made some veggie chili with Otis' help, who can't seem to stop flying on to me now that I'm home. I know I should make my chili with beans that don't come out of a can, but hey- it's so easy and at least they were organic.... Played with the new 35 f/2 lens. Realized how much I hate my flash. Should play with covering the flash or getting an SB.... Hmmm.

Mr. Bender
Friday. First week back wasn't a bad one. I have a student this week who is sweet and eager. Tonight went out to the neighborhood sushi place with Rodney to catch up and drink some large asian beers. (Look closely and you'll see an Otis-bird bite mark near Rodney's mouth. Ouch! He was confused maybe by both of us in the house together, or maybe R didn't give him enough time, or maybe related Rodney with us leaving?) We spoke of hiking a bunch this year, as we both missed it this past year. Now it's in writing... Trying to be careful of making too many promises/resolutions to myself. Keep it to the most important ones...

Thank you! I think the weekend project may be to take a self-portrait or two... I realized during this trip that as the photographer you have to make an effort to get yourself in the photos. I did take a couple there. It is interesting, that's for sure...

Otis-bird bite? Will I understand better upon perusing your photostream?
Just stumbled upon your diary. With what you've got here so far, I look forward to more!

edit: Ok, understand the Otis-bird now. Yikes on the bite! I've got a scar from an ex-girlfriend's macaw--and that was over 5 years ago!

me and my little guy
(Otis, the biting culprit! I must say that he is normally very sweet, and in 1 1/2 years has only bitten me, Phillip and now Rodney once each and meant it. This is exactly why we didn't take O seriously last night and R paid for it...)

Spent a lot of time in front of the computer today, but all in the name of photography! Phillip and I spent a few hours going through the trip photos, and we finally narrowed the group down to 300. We plan on printing these out and I'll have to see how many make it on Flickr. I also edited all our Vietnam selections, so they're done!

Otis has been pretty much surgically attached to me since we've been back. He's really much better at flying now (he recently grew in all his clipped flight feathers) and uses his skills to fly on to me constantly. We're working on having him fly to me only when invited, but needy-bird isn't grasping that concept too quickly.

Went on a nice walk today with the dogs and Phillip... crisp, cold weather and a touch of rain, broken up by some sun breaks. Nice.

Had to edit to add that I went to see "Stranger Than Fiction" last night with Lara, Matt and Lara's friend Nikki. Went to the Laurelhurst so we could watch with beers in our hand. (LOVE the Laurelhurst...) I liked it- quirky, sweet. Then went back to Lara's for some chatter, laughter, and wine. Maybe a bit too much wine...

Thanks Iramiro, he does enjoy attention especially from me. But he is great with Phillip. Strangers take some time to gain trust. Rodney just watched him while we were gone for a month, so they are good friends. Parrots are so interesting... considering the fact that they're prey animals, not predators like dogs. It really does take a different mindset. They are sooo intelligent and clownish, and... I could go on. Love my green goofball.

Jonathan, are you looking at getting a dog? And yes, no kids here so there will be a few dog and bird shots. But I'll try to only post them here when they're really applicable. Part of the excitement for this project is taking photos of the things I overlook as a part of my daily life. And I definitely haven't overlooked the critters when it comes to photos LOL.

too much computer, too little coffee
Again, lots of time behind the computer today. Am uploading Vietnam photos to Flickr. I also have some stuff to do for work as well. It's been all about coffee, music, and computer today and that's OK. I don't like to be behind the monitor this much, but it's easier to do when it's photo stuff.

Now we're watching the Patriots game, while I bounce back and forth between the computer. I need to get these trip photos done so I can stop the computer madness... Ugh... But at least it's a gray day so I'm not missing out.

reverence
My new tattoo was finally spotted at work. Not that I'd been hiding it... but... I hadn't been exactly flaunting it either. When deciding whether to get it or not in Thailand, I realized that if it were just me and P and our friends living in the woods, I'd get it. The only thing holding me back was what others thought. So, along with my new theme of the year, I got it done.

It's a Thai word for reverence. It was done by hand - a "bamboo" tattoo by a sweet local guy who spoke little English. It's done with a long bamboo? rod with the needles attached (essentially taped) to the end. He hand-inks you. It hurts FAR less than the "normal" method with the motorized needles (what do you even call them?) here in the US. No bleeding, healed quickly. I have photos of P getting his, and will link to them when I upload them.
I love it.
Great journal. I love the new tatoo.

my love
Started dealing with some craziness at work today - the loveliness of being in a supervisory position. BUT a good thing, I'm motivated and hoping to get things worked out as smoothly as possible. I think I'm well-suited to this job, but I can see how sometimes the position can lead you wanting to just do patient treatments. (I'm a hand therapist, just started this past week in a managerial role, but still working with patients too.) However, I have been enjoying it, despite the times of nuttiness and am eager to make some changes.

After work, picked up Phillip from his job at the Oregonian, and we went to do some bouldering. Then went home and had a nice evening together- Thai food (yep, we ordered out Thai food and have barely been back), wine/beer, and a movie. Ahhhh... the comforts of home. Started working on the Thailand photos as well. It WILL get done.

Today was busy at work. All morning at the hospital, saw a 5 year old girl who was adorable... Back to work and 10 messages on the phone. The afternoon with a meeting and the rest of my schedule full with patients. Tried to get things done while people were on hot packs or whatnot. Phew.

Home, drank a beer, ate steamed veggies and quinoa, watched bad TV with P and vegged out. Watched a couple SNL Jeopardy clips on YouTube with P. (Damn that Sean Connery guy is funny.) Took one photo, started to edit it, only ended up using unsharp mask and then quit. There ya go. Tired but not in a bad way...

Foggy this morning on the way to work. I saw so many beautiful photo ops but only had my phone for a camera. I like this one though... Note to self- next phone, better camera.

Ready to come home and relax, but had to finish a Physical Capacity Evaluation. Why did I sign up to take that training again?? No, it wasn't that bad. But I missed my day off... No... it's a test to assess someone's abilities, usually involving a person with a work-related injury (not always though). I do this 3-4 hr. long test to see what they can and can't do as far as returning to work, a specific job, or, less often, for disability. Don't know if that's clear enough...

the ladies
A great Saturday... Slow morning with coffee. Then got a bunch of things done at home - cleaning, re-organizing, etc with Phillip. That always allows lots of hang out time with Otis and the dogs which they dig. Showered with Otis and took some photos of his feathers (here and here) that I love. Almost posted one of those, but...

My time with Lara was too memorable. (The photo is of me, her and her dog Althea.) Went for a walk at Mt. Tabor - a park within Portland's city limits. Not as big as Forest Park, but closer and so beautiful. The weather was very New England-y. Cold, crisp, and a little windy. Loving it. Talked a lot about what we want to happen in the upcoming year. Lara and I are working on each others' inspiration - staying active, doing yoga, climbing, hiking, being creative, etc.

Getting in the woods in this part of the country is vital for me in the winter. Everything looks saturated in color when wet and exceptionally cozy and romantic. Without those jaunts, I'd go absolutely stir crazy from the dreariness. Although today I'd never know I was in the Pacific Northwest...

Afterwards, P and I went out for dinner and beers with Mike and Alisun, who have newly announced that they're expecting their first child in July. Good conversation, good friends, and good beer.

The weekend's getting off to a great start.

Didn't take many photos today... Continued my nice weekend with a bouldering session at the gym with Phillip and Lara. Had fun, felt fairly strong. Followed that with an enormous grocery run with P. We desperately needed food! (Bought some clementines which were pretty in the winter sun) Came home, did a few more chore type things... then had a nice long walk in the brisk air with the pooches, and made dinner. Homemade seitan (faux meat), mashed potatoes, and mushroom gravy. So good. Not an extraordinary day, but an enjoyable one.

I contemplated bringing my camera along today to work, but didn't. Then of course the most spectacular sunset in a long time happened while still at work. I tried a camera shot but it was futile. It was amazing though, trust me... and the clouds!

Love my husband... when I got home I had found out that on his day off he had: washed the car, emptied the compost, taken out the trash, done laundry, deposited a check, taken the dogs for a walk to get beer to go with dinner, and fixed a flat on my bike. !

The dogs blissed out to rawhides this evening. I realized that Henneh had not made an appearance in here yet, and I was sorely in need of a photo. Hence, the dog shot.

oaks bottom
Another gorgeous sunny-yet-chilly (read DRY) day. Did I mention how much I LOVE this weather?? Took a nice long bike ride on the Sprinwater Corridor trail. Am trying to bike more... love to feel the wind on my face, my blood pumping, my breath burning... (and my legs burning, I'm out of shape) I lovelovelove going fast - downhill especially. You can almost imagine what a bird must feel like soaring on a draft.

The trail goes along a creek, then down into an industrial-type area, through a couple quiet neighborhoods, and then along a paved trail that goes through more woods and alongside Oak Bottom wildlife refuge. During spring and summer there are so many birds here. I bike down with binoculars and bird book and ogle.

A funny story today- I stopped along the path to take a photo of a heron (see it here) and a biker (fully decked in spandex etc) called out "tuck in a bit, please!" Oops! I look down and just as I'm realizing that I'm barely out in the path (and he's being a touch self-important) a passing runner yells "#UCK YOUuuu!" to him (for me, essentially). How great is that.... I mean really, I'm taking on the fence taking a photo, not in the middle of the path on my cell or something....

Had a very hard time choosing the photo today. Do I go with a shot with the trailin it? With the red bridge and bike silhouette? With the trains? I chose this one because I'm sorely lacking wide shots thusfar (I tend to zooom).

In the story - Little Red Riding Hood (her name) is talking to a wolf who has eaten her grandmother and she says "My what big teeth you have grandma" whereby the wolf says " The better to eat you with !" and then chases her out into the forest...

So - Better for biting and very clean is a good translation...

So many great photos you have here. I kinda ran out of time this morning, so I have not really looked at the most recent. I like January 23rd a lot.

I like January 25 especially. Don't sweat the quality of your crapcam. The photo is perfect as is. I think in ten years time, these early phone cams will become cult objects, like the Holga and toy cameras are today (if only you could get the thing to vignette and have a few nice light leaks, you'd really have something). Thanks for your comment on cropping one of my photos. I think I may try that and post it again.

Never tried quinoa. It seems pretty rare in France yet, and I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it. Hmm...

Lovely smile.

And now I want sushi. I doubt we could get into our favorite sushi place on a Friday night. It's tiny, and tables book up quickly.

Eel.....Mmmmmm.

You really have a lovely smile, I should go to the dentist too but I've been too lazy, it seems I won't escape from the appointment next week

And never tried quinoa, looks delicious, I must try it one of these days

Oh! Thanks for the translation... mine is a little less poetic however LOL.
& - you should go... make an appointment this week or it won't get done! (talking from experience here.) Your teeth feel so good afterwards.
- Thanks for your comments. I don't like the phonecam, but I do like the way that shot turned out. It's the photos that I want to be sharp that I have issues with. But it's all just about documenting, right? I actually have been carrying my point-and-shoot with me so I don't have to depend on the phone.
- Quinoa is a grain (I buy it in the bulk section of my local natural food store) - it's like couscous, but a bit bigger and a firmer texture. It's got a yummy nutty flavor. I just use it in place of rice.
- Thank you! Mmmmm... sushi....

light rail
My carpool partner was sick today. Phillip and I only have one car (which is totally doable in Portland) so as this was P's week to have the car, I took the bus/MAX in to work. (MAX is a light-rail train.) It takes longer, but I like the people watching and to see the city wake up.

It says something about Portland's city planning and public transit system that I work 30-40 mins away by car and can easily take MAX to work. I get there in just over an hour.

I loved the light rail in Portland, but had littlereason to take it. When I was staying at one hotel I would takethe bus to the office. It left odd to get on without paying (I stayed and worked in the fre zone).

the doughnut challenge
Great day today... Phillip made some last-minute plans to leave town with some buddies to climb. (No, that's not the reason it was a great day. stop it.) My morning was lazy with coffee... in P's pj pants, a large hoodie and my slippers and get a visit from Lara. We chat and decide to walk the dogs over to her place for pancakes with Matt. Wheat ones with real maple syrup and bananas and some Greek yogurt here and there. Mmmm...

Later we meet up to see the spanish movie "Volver." First we pick up Matt's friend Brian and head over to the Portland classic - the Virginia Cafe. Have a couple drinks and take a few nice shots that I really dig. Walked to the movie and it was good - funnier than I anticipated - but unfortunately I dozed a bit during it. (not at all because the movie was boring... in fact, as usual per Almodovar, it wasn't.)

We then hit another Portland classic - Voodoo doughnuts. Matt decided to take the monster doughnut challenge. You get an enormous doughnut, a glass of water, and a minute 20 seconds. Unfortunately, he didn't make it. But he has his technique honed for next time, which is dipping the doughnut pieces in water before stuffing them in to facilitate an easier swallow. (yes, that's water in the photo, not drool...)

See the outtakes from today here.

- Yeah, dont you just love that? The free zone. Not sure when you were in Portland last, but now the MAX has a line that goes up into north Portland, and out to the airport. I do love this city...
