This is my attempt to take a picture every day of 2007 which should represent my day in some way. I'm a Politics student at Hull University (UK) and im in my final year so 2007 will include some big events for me - graduation, moving to a new city and flat, starting a new job etc. So hopefully this will project will be a good account of an intersting year!!

Anyway enough talking here's the first picture.

Went to see a really great film today, definitely the best i've seen in a while. It was Leonardo DiCaprio's new film 'Blood Diamonds' and tells the story of two men caught up in the Sierra Leone civil war and the impact that the sale of conflict diamonds can have. Now normally I don't rate DiCaprio but in this film he was outstanding and certainly deserves his oscar nomination. All in all a really moving film with a very important message.

February 4th - Postgraduate

Today I’ve finished something I’ve been thinking about for a while. I’m really lucky to have been offered a job from July (in London) working for a great boss in a job that I really wanted. i don't know how much i'm being paid yet, but it will definitely be better than the peanuts student loan i'm living on at the moment!

One of the conditions/suggestions of me being offered the job was that I would carry on my studies by doing a Masters degree. While I’ve always wanted to do a MA I never thought I would be able to afford it. So in a way I’m lucky to be going into a job where I can work at the same time so I can afford it. So today I finished my application to Birkbeck College, University of London for an MSc in International Security and Global Governance!! Don’t know how long it will take to hear from them, but hopefully I’ll know in a month or so whether I’ve been accepted. Keeping my fingers crossed :)

Union Elections

Its Union election time here in Hull so for the next six weeks it's gonna be crazy!! Those running for election go really mad and harrass the other students constantly trying to get you to vote for them. It usually resorts to bribery with every candidate giving free stuff (usually sweets/candy) to get yout vote. Its funny for the first week but after that gets really annoying. Trying to get to the library is a nightmare as there's normally tonnes of people campaigning outside the door!!

What might make it more interesting this year is that one of my coursemates is running for Union President. Posters have gone up in the politics department announcing their intention to run. What's strange however is that they're keeping their name secret at the moment!! They're asking people to join the campaign without saying who they are - really strange. However I think I know who it is and it doesn't suprise me they're keeping quiet at the moment as I don't think he'll get much support when people know who he is :)

Ice Skating

Today has been a good day. Me and my four housemates went Ice Skating at the local ice rink, not that any of us are particularly good, but we thought it would be fun. Two of my housemates - Nica and Alex have never been ice skating before so it was quite funny to see them take their first steps on the ice. Personally I wasn't very good, although I managed not to fall over and embarrass myself too much :)

The only annoying thing was the attitude of the staff they kept blowing their whistles telling people to take off their hats and scarves!! Who’s ever heard of not being able to wear a hat on an ice rink? What was worse was they kept telling me off every time I tried to take a photo (apparently that’s banned as well!!!!). But despite that it was a fun day.

Monkey!!!

Today's been quite an eventful day for a number of reasons. Firstly my house has gone back on the rental market so for the next few weeks i'll be having people round to look at the place. Its a bit annoying to be honest, but most of all its just served to remind me that i'll be leaving University in a few months and i'll be moving to a new city and a new job.

The second thing (which has had a similar effect) is that I had my last tutorial/seminar with one of my favourite lecturers. He's been one of my main lecturers for the last two years so its a bit weird knowing i'll never have another class with him.

The third reason today has been eventful is that I bought something that really brought a smile to my face. Monkey (as he is called) is a character in a number of TV adverts in the UK. He used to advertise for a Digital TV service and the adverts were hilarious, some of the best ever. But then the company went bust and he stopped being on TV :( But in the last few weeks the tea company PG Tips (which has always advertised using monkeys) started advertising with him. And yesterday walking round the supermarket I saw they were giving him away free when you bought some tea so I had to rush and buy him. He may well feature in future pictures :)

You can follow the adventures of monkey at www.flickr.com/photos/simonkimber/sets/72157594534271923/

Today I celebrated Chinese New Year with a group of my friends. Given that one of my housemates is Chinese and another is Malaysian we did a bit more than we might normally. Ah well pancakes are a long tradition in the UK on shrove tuesday. All links back to giving up fats for Lent, you use them up in pancakes the day before Lent begins. Weekly Shop

So today was my weekly visit to the supermarket to stock up on food, and what a nightmare it turned into!!! Instead of going to my usual supermarket my housemates said they wanted to go to another - which we did. However within a few minutes we had realised our mistake. The shop was really overpriced (compared to our usual store), half the shelves were empty and the staff were useless and rude when you asked them for any help. Suffice to say we won't be ging back there. I know its a trivial matter really, but it wound me up and I felt a need to have a rant.

Union Elections

So after weeks of campaigning the Union elections have finally arrived with voting taking place all this week. To be honest it's not really a proper election; even though each candidate runs on a platform none of that actually matters as its just one big popularity contest.

When I was voting I bumped into a good friend of mine and asked her how she was voting and she told me she was voting for the best looking candidates - LOL!!! Anyway after you vote you get given a sticker (in the picture) that tells everyone you've voted. Although this years isn't as good as in previous years - the old stickers used to be really clear and said "I'VE ALREADY VOTED - LEAVE ME ALONE"

Time's Ticking Away

I don't know about anyone else but i'm finding it really hard to keep up with this, not sure if i'm going to be able to carry on.

But anyway today was the day me and my housemates did our weekly shop. Normally we'd go on a Friday but one of housemates had to go home for a funeral today (and he's the driver in the house) so we had to go really early this morning. So I was at the Supermarket two hours before I'm normally out of bed :)

Then on the drive back we were in a small car crash!!!! We were stuck in a long traffic jam and this big 4x4 was trying to turn round or something behind us and the driver crashed into the back of us. Luckily because she wasn't going too fast not much damage was done and no-one was hurt. Quite an unusual start to the day!
