yes yes!

2007 is a blank slate! woo hoo!

here are some things I hope to accomplish:
-to start painting again
-to look less to what others want from me, and more to what I want to contribute
-to spend more time with my family
-to cook semi-regularly
-to finish the renovations on our first floor
-to do yoga and work out regularly
-to slow the fuck down and enjoy right now... and now too.

a toast to all of us in our new year! cheers!

looking ahead

a death in the family before the holidays has brought a some very important things to light. I must not take the love, the people who I love, in my life for granted. or my health.

carpe diem, my friends!

Hey

Welcome, glad to have you on board.
But sorry, diptychs won't work here. It's one photo per day, and one only.
And, the photo must have been taken the day you're writing about. Here, the 1st of January.
Please change it.

And sorry for your loss.

Such strict rules, Philippe! (oooh, and I sometimes make my crapcam collages, must remember not to upload them then)

I'm all for strict group rules to maintain the flow though. Oh, and I like the diptych Rynokinski!

By the way, I didn't say I didn't like the diptych... which I really like too.

golf condo

time with my Dad in his golf condo in Florida. his retirement home base. I hardly ever see my Dad these days. we've gone back and forth on the subject too many times to count. he wants me to be more proactive about seeing him, yet he hardly ever makes the time to come see me in his many journeys through New York. he spends much of his retirement days travelling, exploring the world on his motorcycles. it's understandable - since I am the only child without grandchildren for him to visit, there's not much of a pull. I want to be closer to him, but we live in pretty separate worlds with not much commonality to bring us together. conversation is stiff, forced. saying "I love you" always feels like an event in and of itself.

I am seeing this picture metaphorically. the screen between my Dad and I has thinned over the years, with me further away from my teenage rebelliousness. there's a pretty picture I have in mind of how we would interact, laugh together with ease, share feelings at some level, be able to make fun of each other, even be friends. but it's nothing but a picture for now. for these moments.. I have my hopes, but be with what is. however awkward it may be. he IS my Dad, after all.

Hi Ryno, seems like we've got a lot of the same goals for this year. I like the last one, that's my number one this year. I, too, lost someone very close to me recently and it has really made me stop and really look around and live in the now. I think what you've written about your father is so true of many relationships children have with their parents. But the fact that you are writing about it now and that you feel the urge for a change is the first step. Tell you dad that you love him everytime you talk to him, I think that will make a huge difference. He is your dad and the only one you have, live in the now and make the most of what you have.

Keep that pretty picture fresh in your mind and I believe it will become reality one day.

It's often difficult to see that people who are close to you have changed and maybe it's hard for him to see that you have gone from the angsty teenager to being a wonderfully creative man.

thanks both of you, very sweet responses. I really appreciate your thoughts.

noticing how beautiful everyday life is while it's all whipping by...

trying to at LEAST! haha

in my grand fantasy-ego of myself-as-better-then-others I like to think that I am someone who takes in the details of life most people miss. however, I am clear that this self-aggrandizing thought is in itself a distraction - since it's all occurring inside my mind and not in the actual experience. anyway. it's flickr that I have to blame for bringing me back down to earth to see that there are so so many other people who take joy in all the small detail I used to think *only I saw*. thanks flickr.

...back to the ego-boost drawing board.
