Cooling down

I hitch-hike to work. That gives me more flexibility as to traveling time than the train (that is pathetic in my region), but it's also more interesting than driving a ton of metal amongst thousands of other people also driving their ton of metal to bring their eighty kilos of meat to the office.

I have encountered many fascinating people in my twice-daily travels, one of these people is Monsieur Chuard. He's been retired for seventeen years, but he gets up early in the morning to avoid traffic jams on the road between his girlfriend's place and his house. We have coffee at his home, where he opens all the shutters and switches the radio on, and then go to his ex-office, now run by his son, where he has coffee with his old chums while I trundle on to _my_ office.

I spend the day pottering around the house, fixing a couple of things that need fixing, helping my brother fix the brakes on his car and reading "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, a good read I highly recommend to start solving most of the world problems...

Cracked screen
The Ixus needs screen surgery. That's no big deal, I did it a few months ago, as I bought this camera from another Flickrite who danced a bit too enthusiastically at a rave party. I've grown fond of the pocket-size of this camera.

2007-01-07 - Dimanche 7 janvier.

It rained very early, before the alarm clock goes off. When it does, I look outside: very low clouds, not a single star visible. I go back to bed and get up at seven. Lazy morning sipping tea while having another read at "The God Delusion". I wait for the light to get a bit better to go and take some pictures while taking a walk in the forest.
Chevreuil
The 600 is an awkward item to carry, I'm still experimenting. The tripod stays in the car.

Quiet lunch and then Sunday siesta. After that I watched an absolutely beautiful movie "Le Peuple Migrateur". For those that haven't seen this movie, get it. Now. For those that have seen it, go see it again. And why didn't you tell me about it?
There's beauty in this film that makes your eyes water.

Of course, I can't miss that...

For those that don't know him, Antoine was a very popular French singer in the sixties (and seventies? not too sure about that), and he used his earnings to buy a yacht (Banana Split) to sail away. He comes back to France from time to time, presumably when he need a bit more money. He's a wonderful character.

Bella, it's indeed of the cruciferous family. I found a mention of it in one of the Wikipedia articles. It tastes very much like cauliflower, but cauliflower has a sharper taste, Romanesco is softer. It's actually very nice raw, or very lightly cooked.

During my lunch break, I went to the public library to swap some books. The fine on a couple of overdues was the size of a small African country's debt...

It's possible to do a lot of things with a few basic knots. In the coming weeks, I'll try and document the few knots I know and use often. On Saturday, somebody remarked on the knot I made to close the loop I use to hang the telelens to my carrying harness. In French, it's called "Noeud de pêcheur double", the double fisherman's knot.

There's a certain satisfaction in being able to tie a knot that does exactly the job, and it doesn't take much to learn. Have you had a look at the pictures I posted at the same time as that one? I'd be curious to know if anybody was able to learn from the pictures...

Frosty morning...
Fool moon is on Friday, Hurrah!

More music... I actually played this CD because the name of the group reminds me of a Flickr user, Airport Sleeper who had a set of Martini shots that were excellent.

TGIF! As always, it's a good thing when the week-end finaly happens. A work colleague has applied for Swiss citizenship, so we go to a restaurant to duly celebrate at lunch time. We have a Swiss fondue, with which we drink Fendant, followed by meringue with double cream (for the diet).
It's full moon, and the weather forecast is quite optimist. There's fog in the valley, so I head for the mountains. I've decided to sleep on top of Le Forchat, a small mountin where I've done this before. I leave after supper, it's only an hour and a half walk. The view I get from the summit makes it well worthwhile:

As planned, the view in the morning at sunrise is quite spectacular:

I have a relaxed breakfast in the woods, as the wind is too strong for comfort at the top, and head back to the valley.

Relaxed morning, spent fiddling with hardware and finicky stuff.
In the afternoon, the weather is very warm, and I decide to take the light-sucker for a walk.

Thank you all for visiting, and for your comments.

Farfalla, the light at sunset is often very good too, it's just that I coudln't get off work early enough to go and do my shopping AND get to the mountains early enough. As a rule, I don't shop on week-ends.

Lady, the mountains are always beautiful. It's just that sometimes I more successful in communicating that beauty...

Sunshine, stay tuned if you like knots, there'll be more.

Lori, a knot well executed has an aesthetic appeal to it.

Quiet evening tonight. I haven't managed to read as much of the week-end papers as I wanted to (beginning of the month is "Le Monde Diplo" time, and week-end is usually "Politis" time, so the first week-end of the month is normally quite loaded).

Tomorrow I'll be in Lausanne for a Flickr meeting (yay!), so I'll group several posts at a later stage.

Bedtime reading...

Hi, my first time in here. I love Jan 10 and 15. Feb 2 and 3 are sooo dreamy.

Comments - I myself have had a bottle or two of the Black Cat in my day.

How often do you climb?

Pink Martini is a Portland band... how do you know them? (maybe they're more popular than I realize?)

OK, I'm done for now. I'll be back!

Thanks Iramiro, mountains are indeed beautiful. Glad I could convey some of that beauty.

Satrina, I aim to please. ;-)

Lady, it was indeed a great evening. See pics further down and on my stream.

Erica/Phillip? Thanks for visiting. I don't climb very often: in summer, I tend to go mountaineering and paragliding when the weather is noce, and this winter has been a real catastrophe for ice-climbing, the waterfalls aren't forming.

An evening with my long-time firend Maryse. We go for supper to an Indian restaurant. It's been a long time since I ate Indian or Pakistani food. There was a good Indian restaurant in Thonon, with an excellent chef where I used to go quite often, but the restaurant changed owner, which isn't necessarily bad, but the cook left shortly after. We tried a couple of times after that but where too disappointed, so no more visits there. The "new" one (it's actually been operating for a few years) is quite nice, but the food is served in a way that makes it difficult to eat with your fingers, and metal utensils give the food a horrid taste...

Lausanne Flickr meeting. Yay!!! We met in a restaurant called "Le Lyrique", as it is in close proximity to the Opera. The setting is nice but unpretentious, quite intimate actually. The menus aren't pretentious either, offering mostly Greek and Mediterranean dishes. And it's delicious. I order a "brochette de thon rouge et de crevettes", for people that speak in Gleesh, it's a kebab of red tuna and prawns, with a warm "tapenade" (Provence olive paste) and a fresh coriander sauce. The taste was delicate, the textures amazing, the whole dish was soooo mouth-watering...
More delicious food
I really enjoyed meeting Krakote, as she travelled to South Africa recently, and also to South Almerica and Cuba, so we had a lot of impressions to compare...

Béatrice is going on what she calls "a 50 year sabbatical"... On her card I wrote we'll probably meet there ;-)
Béatrice

There was lots of food and drinks at lunchtime in the office. The mood was jolly, and I snapped plenty pictures. I hope quite q few of them will make it onto my stream...
