inside the firewall

January 5th.

Most of the time, it's just another software job. You wrestle with the code, you have long meetings, you deal with the small moments of the day. And then, a couple times a year, you realize "holy thundering herd, batman, I have 200 million people using my software". Most of the time, that realization is because something has gone terribly wrong in the software. Windows machines are like snowflakes, no two alike, and a 1 percent failure rate is only 2 million people burning you in effigy. And then you get to spend a week or 2 without sleep trying to figure what going on with these machines that are out there somewhere, certainly nothing in the captivity of your lab behaves that way, all the while receiving hate mail that says "Apple doesn't care".

And then there's MacWorld, where you turn on the NPR with breakfast and the national news is giving breathless speculations about what you're going to release on Tuesday.

This one's gonna be good.

This is a shot from my office toward late afternoon / sunset with my craptastic cellphone camera. Tuesday afternoon I will be unchained from my desk and I will be fleeing toward Mexico.

love the leaf - obviously it is floating but it could just as easily be falling or suspended somewhere in the cosmos - putting the leaf in the dead centre is against those pesky rules of thirds - was it a conscious decision - im just curious and i kinda like it dead centre - the whitish wave line near the top is sweet

Jonathan -- I took a lot of pictures of the leaf in the pond, but I liked the wave along the top of this one. In the pictures where the leaf is offset, I lost the repeated pattern of the wave right beneath the leaf and then above it or maybe then I lost the dark blue shadow. You move the camera just a bit and the highlights all change.

_CiScO_ -- you drank manzanita tea?? You are braver then I, or maybe just confident in your mother's love.

no, no mas

January 8, less than 24 hours to the MacWorld keynote and I am torturing one of our QA managers with my cellphone camera. He is saying "no, no mas, let me go home to my wife and baby, you bastards."

The best shot I didn't get today is the phenomena before MacWorld or the summer developer conference where people flock to our front sidewalk to get a picture of themselves in front of the sign. Sometimes there's a queue. You can feel their love. You can feel them vibrating with excitement. Sometimes if I'm not in a hurry, I offer to take the picture so they can all be in the shot -- and the security guard scowls at me.

Tokyo parasol

February 1st. It was so cold leaving the building after sunset tonight. The trees ghost-white in the small anti-shadows of the street lights. I couldn't help thinking of the last time I was in Tokyo, in the freezing chill of spring cherry blossom season. I bought this sun parasol off a street vendor, mostly to keep the ravens out of my hair.

I miss the drunken parties with the oil fires in the graveyards. You just don't get that here.

Well, Vista is a little rough right out of the box. It crashes about 3-4 times a day on me. It requires a big ass machine with a big footprint. But it's the future of Windows, so it doesn't matter whether we love it or hate it, it's what we're all going to have to use moving forward. They'll fix the bugs, they'll make it better.

I'm only running Vista because I develop software. I expect to have to clean install the OS again every month or so and I'm set up for that. To be honest, I keep my data, my email, my photos on my Mac.
