Daily Photo Set: 2006, 2007

This is something I've been doing now for few months already, and look forward to post my daily photos here as well.

But let me tell you folks... it is VERY hard to take one photo each day... couple of times I have just managed it before midnight!
It is even harder to try to take "good" pictures or "interesting" picture or "relevant" pictures each day.

1. Take photo daily
2. Try to have them with some diversity
3. If something "unusual" (birthdays, trips, visits etc.) occur that day, try to have the daily photo reflect that.
4. Make no changes to the photograph other then red-eye, crop and straighten. - and even keep those to minimum.
5. The day is 00:00-23:59 (not as with some; from the time I wake up, and till I go to sleep)

DAY 1: 01. January, 2007 - Sunday (364 to go)
01.01.2007 - Coming out of the closet
My stepson Tristan playing his favorite game of hiding in the closet.

Hiding? It looks like he's coming out ;-)
Sweet picture!. And I like your rules. I already cheated a bit by changing colours in my pic though... And (of course) a happy new year!!!
Samrag 12 years ago
Yeh - In Iceland we don't just say "coming out" we actually say "coming out of the closet"!!! :)
iciblancheneige 12 years ago
haha, you got what I meant :-D
Well, my English isn't THAT great, so there's a big risk misinterpreting things I try (or maybe even try NOT) to say.
Anyway, still think it's a lovely pic :-)

DAY 2: 02. January, 2007 - Monday (363 to go) Home
02.01.2007 - Empty streets in Reykjavik
The city center of Reykjavik, more specific, Lækjargata early in the morning.
I live in the city center, and work in the city center, so a lot of my photos end up being taken in the city center - which is fine as I am dearly in love with my city. Think it is beautiful, a great mix of old and new houses.

My Day: I'm having trouble sleeping so around 4 I was up, sitting at my computer, eating my Cheerios, drinking my coffee, blogging, surfing the net, watching the news from the night before etc. At 8 I went to work at Nonnabiti, which is a popular fast food restaurant down town. When I came home in the afternoon to my little family, Heida and Tristan, we had some quality time together. We had some laughs and then sat down and discussed if we should begin our vegatables/living food project, and if so how we should do it.
Talking about such things made us cuddle up in the sofa and watch Over the Hedge with Tristan - but we only made it to 7 and all of us went to bed then... AT SEVEN.... goshhh
So of course I am up now - again at 3.30 in the morning... Aaaarrrggg

If you are interested in more photos of Reykjavik I have posted few on webshots as a Tribute to Reykjavík
sweltering distance [deleted] 12 years ago
Cool photo...looks warmer than I imagined.
I'm curious how much daylight do you receive there this time of year? Is there a secret to get through short days and long nights without becoming a little restless?
Samrag 12 years ago
Iceland is most of the time much warmer then both the name and people perception indicate. Much harder is the lack of daylight throughout winter. Much of December and January it feels like we don't have any daylight whatsoever - specially if you are working or in school during the day (then you miss the light completely).
I don't think we have any secret to surviving it - in fact I think we just berely survive it - with a lot of us drinking way to much, and others eating anti-depression pills as candy!! Both of which I have tried, and luckily both of which I have no stopped using!
But maybe the biggest "secret" is that we work a lot, specially throughout winter. It is not unusual for Icelander to work 50-70 hour week!!
zesty house [deleted] 12 years ago
Here's to trouble sleeping.

You are definitely right in that Reykjavik looks beautiful. Especially at night. Although if you keep takin' pictures of it, I'm sure we'll see it during the day.

Scratch that. I'll see it right now in your Tribute =)

It makes me want to go there.... so, great photo! I lived in the north of Scotland for a while, but that's not even close to Iceland's latitude. I always thought it strange that Bergen, was around the corner, so to speak. A completely different aspect that produces, of being on the edge of Europe...

DAY 3: 03. January, 2007 - Tuesday (362 to go) Home
03.01.2007 - Shady characters playing in the night
This photo is taken up on a hill called Öskjuhlíðin. The moon was full and this great light over everything.

My Day: The owner, Jón, came to work today, and as usual we had great laugh and fun at work. One of the girls had called in sick, so he worked her shift - she had incidentally told everyone that her friend was coming from abroud for a visit just last night... hhmmm and then she is sick today - young people.... aarrrggg. Jón is baking cakes these days and selling them with the fast food. He bakes really nice cakes, really tasty - I took a photo of them for the daily photo... but liked the photo above better - maybe I'll take one another day.
Heiða and Tristan picked me up from work and we went for a small ride. We went up Öskjuhlidin and took some photos, and then we drove "recklessly" down the hill, much to Tristan's happiness.
I went to our old place after lunch and picked up some boxes and then went with my dad to the movies. So Children of Men... and let me tell you - it is one of the best film I've seen in months.
Tristan is copying me now, and after one hour sleep tonight he woke up and is making his mum crazy, as he is unwilling to fall asleep again. I think we will all go to bed soon.

@dda1605: I'm not sure... will have to find out...

@'stee: Haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine yet - but it is on my list

@Android9: My girlfriend was taking some shot of it as well, and asked me to turn the car and put on the headlights... which I did... that is the "secret" of the lighting

@Loca-Bandoca: Well my stepson is 2 years old and sleeps in our bed. Heida (my girlfriend) is all about the natural mothering which includes allowing your child to stay in bed for many years to come... or that is until they feel the need or are comfortable with sleeping in their own bed. So far this has been really nice and he hasn't desturbed my sleep - we are however going to put soon a small bed next to our bed, and put him there after he falls asleep... we'll see - maybe I'll tell you more about it later this year ;-)

@BellaGaia: This photo was taken around 17:30-18:00, just like you guessed. But it was full moonlight!!!!

04.01.2007 - My Heida dearest
My girlfriend Heiða... taking mugshots of herself... I think

My Day: Welllllll...... Got an angry phonecall from newly-woken-up Heiða at 10.30 this morning! Apparently she had told me when she came to bed shortly after me last night, that I was supposed to wake her and Tristan before I would leave for work at 8. I apparently said yes, ok, and all that - but I can't remember this, as I was clearly already asleep! So this morning out of kindness of my heart I made a special effort NOT to wake them up.... huh - so misunderstood in my lifetime!!!!
Other than that - I got the nutty Italian that works with me to take part in this project! (see above as Mushy-mushroom)...
Other than that - Signed up for few courses in MH - ENG503, NÁT133, FÉL233

DAY 5: 05. January, 2007 - Friday (360 to go) Home
05.01.2007 - THE FLAGSHIP
ENGEY - the largest fishing ship in the Icelandic Fleet

My Day: Ok... so Tristan and I are clearly having trouble with our sleeping routine. Mostly I think (in Tristan's case) it is due to how messed up the days were over the holidays. My days are just generally messed up - or if the days aren't messed up - I am messed up!
So this morning at 5.30 Tristan stands up in bed, reaches his hand out and says "euchhhhhh, euchhhh".. which I took first as "I want to get out of bed, get out of my way you big log". But once my eyes adjusted to the dark and I began to look in the direction of where he was point I noticed this big red truck up on a shelf.... AAAaarrrggg. I gave Heiða the EVIL eye for putting the car there (couldn't have been me... that was clear ;-). I realised that handing the car over to Tristan would result in serious injuries to either my head or Heiða's.
I therefore found Tristan a small nice blue car, gave it to him with a loving smile and put my head down on the pillow. Now you have to understand that Tristan is not difficult, nor does he cry out and behave badly to get either attention, or to get what he wants. But when he got this car this morning the theatrics were fantastic. He let the car drop down to the mattress with a distane, then he allowed him self to fall on the pillow face down with a long sigh - and just lay there for a while with his hands covering his temples. No cry, just.... showed us how fantasticly struck my this unfairness he was!
Then he stood up again, smiled so nicely that it would stop a lion, reached out the hand towards the red car and said "euchhhhhh, euchhhh"..

I went out of bed and took Tristan AND the Red car into the living room where we had a great early morning! **sich**

Trained a new girl from Lithiana (however that is written) today at my work. Which means that we now have Italian nutter, crazy Kosovo fellow, and little Lithianian working at the small restaurant. ohhhh and one of the "icelandic girl" is in fact half Japanese, 1/4 German and 1/4 Icelandic

Was scheduled to go to a christmas dance for kids at Heida's workplace - but Heida offered me to stay at home and do the dishes instead YES....So of course I am here now, sitting at the computer with all the dirty dishes waiting :-)

Little behind with replies to comments after 4.jan:

@Sarahwoo: I know about the anyway(s) and anyhow(s), but I also know that a lot of English speaking people say anyways....
When I comment, or blogg, I write "speaking" language - both in English and Icelandic... making my text usually broken, often badly spelled (i.e. spelled as it is spoken). Heida really hates this - but I feel I am more free in my writing, if I just type directly what I am thinking, instead of thinking of sentence structure or correct spelling (too much). I shall keep you informed as to what the schedule is for my English class :-)

@Loca-Bandoca: You asked what other classes I will be taking. Sociology 233, Chemistry/Physics 133 (combined).

@Sontra: What on earth means Yowza ... lol

@osborn: You are right about the photos - as they day will get longer my photos will get lighter... It is just soo rare that I am outside in the middle of the day these couple of hours that we have daylight (and then we might have overcast, raining or snowing anyway).

@luckywhitegirl: I don't have any tripod, but I find a spot for my camera often to either steady my hand or just use timer.

@dolloi: sounds like there is a long a great story, yet to be written regarding your memory and your girlfriend.

@jmarcreichow: Yeh, this could be come interesting - my girlfriend, and colleague from work - both here now... posting photos from "my" life and theirs...

And replies to comments made after 5.jan

@dda1605: well beginning to write my day in "details" was never my intention - though the last few entries have been long. Not much happens in my life these days... work, school, home, sleep, eat... but if there is anything to share with you guys - I will hopefully carry on finding the time to do that.

@sarahwoo: Well you and Heida are clearly both smart and beautiful, so you got yourselfs decent guys that do nice things for you from time to time ;-)
@sarahwoo & Loca-Bandoca: Tristan just turned 2 on the 28.12.2006

DAY 6: 06. January, 2007 - Saturday (359 to go) Home
06.01.2007 - Last day of Christmas
13 days after 24.12, or the 6.jan, is the official last day of Christmas in Iceland. Then the last Icelandic santa goes home (but we have 13 of them) and the elfs move only on this day. If you manage to stop them on crossroads, they will give you everything you dream about, if you allow them to carry on. We take down our decorations today as well, but someone has been early as this morning when I went to work I found this barr-naked christmas tree out in the street where I live.

My Day: Once again I was up way too early, spending few hours here on flickr before heading to work.

I take care of the shift planning at work, and due to us moving to bigger place recently I changed some of the times on there.... We used to begin work at 10 on Saturday mornings, but few weeks back I changed it to 9, giving people one extra hour to get everything ready.
This morning I had of course forgotten all about this myself (all Flickrs fault of course), and came just before 10 to work. Surprisingly there was the owner, already!!! He had taken over Mushy_mushrooms shift. He looked at me very funny when I arrived... so I said something along the lines of how energetic he was to be at work soooo early. He looked at me out of the corner of his eye, and whispered: "Well, I didn't dare to be late!!!".... aaarrrggggghhhh
But he wasn't pissed off at all...

So we just sat down and had ourselves The Last Tempation of The Satan (which I have now taken a photo of as someone asked me to). Great breakfast - specially considering my intentions for going all healthy....aaaarrrggghhhh (again)

At lunch time my best friend, Jói, came to visit me. He lives in Denmark (the bastard - tells me it is a revenge as I lived in England, Australia and Germany for total of 7 years). Jói is just on a very quick business trip here and didn't have any time for a real meet, but it was soooo nice to meet him - Miss you Jói. Anywaysssss - he came, we had a chat, and he left. Did I take a picture, with my camer in my pocket, and taking photos everyday... nooooo of course not, so I had to call him 5 min after he left and get him back so I could get a photo.....aaaarrrrgggghhhhh

They have began setting off fireworks already... and began when it was still daylight.

A quiet, winter morning. I like (sometimes) leaving for work before it is light. There is an ambiance in the air, like you are part of a special club of early risers who gets to enjoy the world in this way...

You know, I can hear snow crunching under my shoes while look at that photo of yours. I love that sound. When you're walking alone on a street and all you hear is snow crunching.

And 13 santas? I bet your kids love that!

What a nice picture! X'mas gone. :)

You are lucky people in Island to have snow. I live in the EastMids of England this winter and local people tell me that it never snows here. so I'm pretty upset 'cause there should be snow at Christmas and New Year.
Though my mum tells me they had just a few snow on X'mas eve in Estonia so far (usually it snows starting from november). This winter seems to be very warm.
I miss snow so much...

i love reading your stories samrag.

i could just imagine tristan's cute face when he was being very dramatic.

that's such a nice pic of the street, it's deserted. it's like everyone jsut got tired of the day and decided to just stay in. i'm hoping to actually see snow for the first time this year.

DAY 7: 07. January, 2007 - Sunday (358 to go) Home
07.01.2007 - Tourguiding duck
This is one of my favorite place in Reykjavík. In the background you can see the old theater (called Iðnó), where my dad used to work. I came for a visit and the old lady in the kitchen would give me some bread and I would go and feed the ducks. Parents take their kids to do this, but sadly we are now over-run by goose and seagulls (and some pidgin). This nice modeling-tourguide-looking goose was there today, not letting me pass unless I would photograph her!! Took many more shots of her (1, 2, 3) and then one of this bird and another much prettier bird.

My Day: Well... short and not that eventful really. Tristan and I enjoyed some quality time together this morning, playing rally-game and watching some TV. When his mother was up some pool began on the TV, and Tristan was so weird watching that. He would laugh so hard each time they would hit the ball, then wait, wait, wait until they would hit it again, and then laugh some more. If too long time would be in between - he spoke to the guys, like telling them to hurry up.
After his dad picked him up and his mother and I had our own type of quality time.... we went for a nice walk in Reykjavík. I had kinda promised to post a daytime photo her, and we almost missed it!!!!

It was nice watching Heiða take photos, for us to share this hobby, to have something together ;-).

We then went and had some coffee in OUR café (were we had our first date) and there was mushy mushroom having coffee as well.

Tonight my sister is coming for a visit, and hopefully she will join our little community her... at least I have gotten her to open up Flickr account. So that was my day off!

what a great .... I'm sorry to say my day wasn't anywhere near as exciting or colourful...
I really need to get out and take some good pictures, but unfortunately untill I get my OWN camera fixed, the quality of photos I take is very limited, as I'm sort of "stealing" shots from my sister's camera...
