I think this is an ambitious project. I intend to piggy-back a year's worth of photos onto my website, Scouting the Fate of Place. My year is quite ambitious already. I've got three quarters of Ph.D. classwork , I'm planning a wedding with my fantastic fiancee Elise, and goodness knows what else might come along. I think a lot about the little things, often by looking at the big picture. I'm totally in love with the interplay of scope between ambiguous and undefinable detail and complete and unrelenting worldliness. For me much of this lies in architectural forms and colors, but I hope to work with people and portraiture in ways that reflect my everyday and its somewheres.

Sunset Jan 2nd HDR (by davebluedevil)

I watched the sunset today from the ocean by the Monarch Eucalyptus Grove. I caught great golds and yellows, but left before the spectacular reds and pinks. This was both my fault and not. I decided to leave before I had to walk back along an unfamiliar path in the dark, but also because both of my camera's batteries were dead (or dying). I should have stayed anyway and caught or two pictures. I especially should have charged my extra battery before I left (apparently I hadn't done this since I used it last). C'est la vie. It was still gorgeous from the parking lot of Borders.

Happy Birthday, Rob. (by davebluedevil)

Yes, Elise. I was supposed to be at home working on the website. I couldn't pass up a gorgeous day. So I went for a walk on the beach and took along my brother's Christmas present to me. I hope you'll forgive me when you come home and find me shorter on work done, than on work waiting to be done.

Rob, Happy Birthday. You gave me a great polaroid for Christmas and I offer you (from afar) a birthday picture with you (Hope you liked the book I gave you, too).

For flickr-ers there are many, many more pictures from my walk. I happen to think some of them are quite good. At least, I like the results. For me, that equals good. You can judge for yourself

I think we may have had a polaroid camera when I was really young, but I don't think my dad liked to use it. Shame really, as there's something really satisfying in watching the picture develop in front of your own eyes.

Curved, Squared, and Blue (by davebluedevil)

Went for a quick walk around the block. There's a couple more on my photostream. It's too hard to just post one a day. My method of shooting usually is spontaneous and burst-y. I grabbed a bunch. It's just so calming walking around with my camera looking for a image, a perspective, a color....

I know how you feel.... someitmes picking just one i hard!
I love the contrast of colours here!! The blue is so sharp!
I wonder why when I take pics like this, they look like crap...
Do you think we perceive other people's pictrures differently from our own? I often see pictures that look cool to me, and then stop to tink about how I too have taken similatr shots, but for some reason other people's always looks better!
Maybe it's the same as not liking your own hair or something.... lol

maybe it's a woman thing?? LOL

~ sunshinecity - a picture, a story
durhamyankee 12 years ago
Oh, no. I don't think it's a woman thing. I think most of my best ideas turn our poorly. I try to think of it all as exploring and learning, but it sure does piss me off sometimes. This one I knew just what I wanted and was able to get the right crop (i'm fond of squares lately). The blue caught my attention right away, the textures are there and the curves were naturally formed by the hose-hanger. I think maybe the problems we see in our own pictures are all the flaws and could-have-beens whereas in other peoples' pictures we see what is there and it's fresh because we haven't dissected or analyzed or fought with it yet.

Dreamy Self-Portrait, or A Touch of Vanity with a splash of Insomnia (by davebluedevil)

Elise and I had a long talk tonight. We were both a bit frustrated about planning issues. Sometimes it just takes a talk to sort things out. I shot this lying in bed next to her while she was trying to go to sleep. Then I came to my desk to prolong counting sheep (fruitlessly I might add).

Had class today. Skipped a bus and took picture while waiting for the next to arrive. I'm quite pleased with the results. The Polaroid from Rob is really turning out to be a creativity booster. Wish I wasn't so busy so I could explore some more (30 minutes was all I could really spare this afternoon). Now... time for dinner, finish a book, work on a website and address some "envelopes"

Oh, and the rest of the set is available here Hope you enjoy them (or at least breeze by them).

durhamyankee 12 years ago

The polaroid I shot this with cost about $15. The film is more expensive about $1 a picture. The shot is actually the blue from below, up close, with way too much flash. It caught the reflection of the parking lot behind. The red is a stop sign, the blue is a pay to park here sign in a campus lot.

THanks!

Specatular Santa Barbara Sunset 01/11/07 (by davebluedevil)

Had a ridiculously amazing sunset. I have a whole group of photos which I shot prior to the sun setting. They're all private for the moment but I'll make them public tomorrow (or the next day) so y'all can look.

Elise told me this one was the prettiest. It's a stitch of about 8 photographs and only slightly adjusted in photoshop to adjust the temperature, blacken the shadows and bring out the highlights in the reflections.

It was damn awesome. You should look at it in the original, so click on the picture and there's a link to it.

Thanks Sontra for all the generous comments. Yes, apparently garden hoses come in blue. Who could've imagined!

Writing TA application due tomorrow. Haven't really started. Let's see if I can finish before 1am (4 hours).

Marc, TA stands for Teaching Assistant. It's a graduate student who helps out a professor with their courses (doing the grading, conducting discussion sections, designing assignments, etc.) I apply for it by updating my resume, writing a cover letter, writing several essays, and organizing my teaching portfolio. Yes, these peace stamps are for wedding invitations. As of this moment more than 55 have been hand written (calligrimafied in homerspeak). Turned out I had less reading to do than I thought... Still must do hegel and foucault but NOT derrida and habermas (must do that for Thursday). It's a philosophy heavy semester this one... THe above IS an hdr, cropped a bit. I like the idea, I'll go back and do more. This one is below my personal expectations, but I still think it's pretty. I'm attracted to shiny things...

The Camera Sees me like this. (by davebluedevil)

Went to the Santa Barbara Tower today. Saw a fantastic double rainbow but none of the shots turned out (the rain was coming right at me and I was actually TOO close to the rainbow). I was very cold and wet trying to get that shot. This is just a little later, same place. I have a bunch of others. This one is minimally edited, if at all.

I read the whole thing last semester. We're only doing selected bits in another class this time round. It'll be much better. And I totally agree.

That's actually 4 classes worth of books. I'm overloading a bit this semester. But I'm taking two pass/fail so many of the books will not get my undivided attention.
satrina* 12 years ago

Cool fishbowl!
how about Alpha.
Alpha, the Beta? ;)
And considering the beta reputation, this name would make even more sense if you listen to J.C. Hutchins' podcast novel, 7th Son.

Happy belated Birthday!

Lovely gift you got. It's a boy -I think- so he should be named Hermenegildo... why? just because it was the first name that came to my mind :) -and not being a common name I'm sure there won't be any other fish named like him.

You'll forgive me if I didn't have time for photographic excesses today.

wow, that's such a cute fish tank/bowl... never seen it like that, like a lamp!!

I think you should call it Cobalt (like the colour!)

actually from the other pics you posted I noticed (s)he's a lot more colourful than I had first realised!
You should call him/her (what is it) CRayola, like the crayon set! LOL

Dave,

Just realized now through the "location" thread that you're in SB! I lived there for about a year when I was young and crazy (ie 18), up near where the Koo Koo Roo used to be. I'm hoping to see some pics of downtown etc. for nostalgia's sake! ;)

Nobody blames me for those (wink wink). And I hope so...

I don't know where the Koo Koo Roo was? I look forward to your pictures of SB!

Yes, it's funny what differences in the lighting does to the scales...

This is reading for Thursday. If you're marked as a "friend" in my contacts, I've posted some new pictures. If you're not a friend and would like to be, let me know. (secret pictures and all...)

Dave, it was up near La Cumbra mall somewhere. I think now it's some other sort of food joint, I can't remember. I just remember noticing the last time we visited up there that it had changed!

It's not easy posing in front of Green. (by davebluedevil)

I found a fantastic door today. I'll have to sequester people and take their pictures in front of it. I'm slowly compiling a list of interesting backdrops on the UCSB campus. (insert evil laugh and Mr. Burns finger move/"excellent" here)
