Une bûchette de Noël

A small version of a traditional french christmas cake. I always look forward to this time of year so that I can eat these...this smaller version can be found in patisserie shops and they are perfect for one person. Mmm....so good.

What?!!! Wow...I am going to bring you one before it is too late! Maybe tomorrow afternoon or lunchtime? Here is a link to a little history and a few recipes...basically it is like eating frosting. There is a cookie like base to it, but it the inside is creamy and rich. This one has a bit of chocolate on the end so that it looks more "log" like...

This one in particular was really sweet but the larger ones we got for christmas were more cake like. Apparently, the ice cream logs are really popular too but I haven't tried them.

Argh... I've always hated those bûches de noël ! Especially the frozen ones. And when my french grand-parents were still alive, I knew every christmas was going to end up with this nightmarish food !!! And again if visiting other parts of this side of the family during the week after Christmas.
The only thing I liked was the little plastic ax or saw... and had fun with for about 2 minutes.
I've managed to avoid those things for years now... just to stumble on one here.
Who's idea was it, this project, again ?

The closest I've ever gotten to a buche de noel was watching the late French chef Julia Child make one on television and saying BUCHE de Noel in her chirpy voice. It looks good!

Thanks everyone! I don't know how long I will continue to breastfeed but it is definitely a big part of my life right now so I am happy to include it as part of my daily photo diary.

@kekett: Nutria are pretty weird little creatures and pretty invasive actually. But they were fun to watch on our walk. And...yeah...I think Felix's eyes are pretty incredible too...

@osbornb: I can totally imagine Julia Child's voice saying "boooche" I totally recommend trying one if you ever get the opportunity!

@flare and blow/up: thanks...I think he is pretty beautiful too. :)

Me and my mess

One of the suggestions at this website was to try to take at least one photo of yourself each month. I hate the way I look in photographs so I think I need to try to take more photos of myself....we'll see.

I have been planning today as a cleaning day for a long time. I needed to tackle the crazy piles all around my work space, things I have been putting off for a long time. Here I am going through photocopy after photocopy of teaching materials, determining what stays and what goes. I am still wearing the same clothes I threw on this morning when I crawled out of bed. I hate cleaning but the organization of my living space directly reflects the feeling of mind and I have been feeling very cluttered lately. Hopefully...things will start clearing up soon...

The next step is that closet back there...
Loca.... 12 years ago
I need to do that myself and quickly, my house looks like it as been turned upside down by a tornado....
Nice photo of your kid.

I agree with what you said about living in a cluttered living space reflects your mind. Our apt has been in a total dissaray for several months since we're preparing for our little one. I'm looking forward to finally getting things settled and put away.

haha.. I love the dialog in these things. I'd never heard of french christmas cakes! interesting to hear different people's different takes on them. And those animals up top? strange things. They look like beavers with odd tails. Anyway your self portrait is great. I like the context of the disorganized closet in the backgroud too. Your baby looks so content. Great title for that one too!

I need to start doing that...in fact, I am motivated to drop my blog, which I haven't touched in a long time, and maybe focus my journaling needs here...either way, thanks for checking in on my little world everyone!

@leesure: thanks :) considering that I hadn't showered or brushed my hair...I don't look too bad. I actually think I am pretty cute...it just doesn't show up in photos. So, I am comfused...which one is the real me?

@ aline_gerika: No, I didn't make the cake myself although I would love to learn how to make them...(sorry Philippe, it's true..). I bought this one at a local patisserie.

WE SHOULD ALL BE IN BED.... gosh... this is keeping me up
sarahwoo 12 years ago
Yeah! As others have pointed out...this photo diary thing is a bit consuming but I am really enjoying it. I hope the momentum keeps up.

I am questioning a lot of things lately...hopefully we will get a chance to talk this weekend. One thing is that I found out that my old lens is basically crap (in the first place) and it wouldn't work that great with a DSLR. So, back to square one in the decision-making process. I feel a bit stuck now because for the meantime I have to use my current camera while wishing it was something different. But...oh it is all connected to something much deeper...

Loved your Bastille photo...

@Android9: Exactly...some people look incredible in photos without any effort at all...I don't think it works that way for me. I think maybe there are certain angles that I look better in or certain lights. Too often I think I look like I am strung out on drugs or something.

@eeland: I agree...taking photos is something I want to improve upon but taking photos of myself is something entirely new...definitely a challenge.

Well, I've posted in my blog the same thing I did here. Not going to do it everyday but dropping it its not a good idea for me, as some of my friends that visit there often, never come to flickr. Ill keep it not in a day by day post but in a whenever I feel like it way.

Biblioescalatortheque
Line 14 Bibliothèque François Mitterrand

On my way to see Le Grande Appartement with Thibaut. (It was only ok...). I carried my camera around with me all day today but this is all I have to show for it. Sure, I took other photos but they were mostly blurry. I'm sick of my camera. I shouldn't say that though. It has been good to me, I am just ready to move on. You know, there is no chemistry anymore. Every time we get together it is like the same thing over and over again.

Perhaps it is connected with my feeling of being trapped lately. I am questioning so much about myself and where I am going. Before, when I was single and childless, I could change jobs, locations, apartments on a whim for a fresh start and a changed perspective but now I can't just go away. I am forced to really face myself and try to figure what exactly is going on inside of me. This doesn't exactly leave me feeling that great as changing yourself is a daunting task. I'm not afraid of who I am but I am sick of accepting and allowing some things to continue. I feel a bit lost.

I have to keep moving forward though and not get to stuck. Life must continue on around me while I try to solve my deep and complicated mysteries.

Thibaut and I have been working through this pack of meditation cards. Today is: Goodness dawns like the sun.

Off to think about this for a little bit...
Samrag 12 years ago
sometimes it is good to be out of control - to let go of wanting to know where you are going or what is going to be around the corner. You know, let life happen to you, instead of you happening to life!

But I think I know what you mean - because often I feel the same. Lately though I feel that sticking to what I have and what I planned on doing, brings greater rewards then changing it all (jobs, locations, apartments.... etc).

Nice photo today - and by the way - I really like your selfportrait on the 4th. Either you are just stunningly beautiful or it is just a great photo ;-)

Sarah,

I am in one of those moments currently as well. Questioning everything about myself, life, direction, etc. Tears have been spilt. Confusion has been had. The works. I wish the answer could just come to me, but somehow, I don't think it works like that. Although who knows? Certainly not me...

I only take pictures of myself when I think I look good... ofetn if I'm going out and am all dressed up!!

~ sunshinecity
sarahwoo 12 years ago
@samrag: Yeah, I agree. In fact, I think moving around and changing was easier because I didn't really have to face anything. But now, here I am, and though it is difficult it will have a much more fulfilling and rewarding outcome.

@francophony: I am sure we are struggling with some similar things. I do think the answers will come, they have to. They are just not coming fast enough and I am impatient! But, even today, after writing that last night and thinking about it some I felt better. I find that if I can talk it through with someone I can usually begin to see what I need to do...the problem is sometimes I get stuck in a negative cloud and I can't see things clearly. This is where time is important whether I like it or not.

Waiting and watching...

Today we had an afternoon gathering with one of the music groups that Thibaut plays in. It also happens to be the official day to eat the the galette des rois (although I will eat it anyday...). I actually made one myself for today and it wasn't as hard as it seemed it would be. It was eaten up too fast for photos, I guess that is a good sign.

I sort of forget about my whole inner struggle questioning for today which was really nice. I love having a child because now instead of being the quiet American who doesn't say much because she is shy about speaking French, I can play with Felix instead of interacting with people.

No, that doesn't describe it exactly. Someone needs to entertain him and I am happy to do it, I love doing it. I did have some nice conversations today though and I do feel that my french is improving. In fact, I am considering practicing the writing thing by doing my diary entries in french and english.

But, not tonight. I am exhausted. Felix was up at 1:30 am with a fever. He was fine today but it meant that he and I slept in the same bed last night and I don't sleep quite as well or as deeply when he is next to me. So, off to peruse flickr and chill out for the evening...

Everytime I'm on a party with adults and kids, there is always one kid, even not knowing me, that comes to get me play with him/them.
And that's where I usually end up, letting the couples to their discussions about school for the kids, insurance for the kids, doctors for the kids, food for the kids, safety for the kids, clothes for the kids, holidays for the kids, and diapers... for the grandma.

And during all that, we are having a great time !
Then, I come back, when the kid in bed, and say "-Anybody up to a little game I brought ?".

Wait a second...

Well, it is late and I go back to school/work tomorrow. I wish I had more time but I wouldn't trade today for time on Flickr even though I love all of you. :)

We like to do something special on Sundays. Usually this means a walk in the forest but today we decided to check out a sea center in Paris. In turned out that it was sunny and we couldn't bare to be inside, so we headed to Luxembourg Gardens instead. Felix had a great time, we all had a great time. You can read more about this portion of our day here.

The photo above is our attempt to photograph Felix with a crown on after getting the piece of galette (my second for this year) with the feve in it. If you get the prize in your piece, you are crowned king (or queen). I chose this picture mostly because of the happiness in Thibaut's face. Today was a fun day and his expression reminds me of that. Felix, was incredibly adorable today. He seems to have days where he just grows and matures over night and today was one of them.

After a nice family nap, we had band rehearsal. I had a hard time today choosing between the photo above and this one. At the piano is Thibaut (the husband), then left to right is me, Laurent (father-in-law), and a family friend, Willy. We are going to be putting on a little community concert at the end of the month so we have been practicing every Sunday for the last few months.

Today's rehearsal felt great. The last few, I just couldn't sing. I was nervous and couldn't hear myself (excuses, excuses) but today there was a good vibe. I love playing music with others but performing on the other hand is so challenging. I am not taking this too seriously though, it is just for fun. We are doing a mix of songs in French and English, mostly folky, singer-songwriter like, much to the dismay of Thibaut who is a jazz musician. But he puts up with us.
PutYourFlareOn PRO 12 years ago
Thibault does look happy in that picture! Felix is unsure of the crown on his head, And he got the feve! I've got a great fangipan recipe I should share with you since you like galette des rois so much. I think you'd enjoy it.

Sounds like you guys really did have a wonderfully full day. I'm looking forward doing the same with our little guy soon.

10:00 pm

Sort of cheat photo today...since I just took a shot of the desk in front of me but this picture gives a bit of insight into my life...

The mug is MY mug. Thibaut and I each have our own mug, which we always use. I never use his, he never uses mine. We never offer them to guests. (In fact, one time Aimee, a.k.a. Put Your Flare On, came over and Thibaut brought us two mugs of tea. She started drinking out of mine, not knowing that it was MINE. Later on, by accident, I picked MINE up and started drinking out of it, forgetting that it wasn't actually mine at the moment...I think she noticed but she didn't say anything...) This mug brings me lots of comfort and I drink a lot of tea.

Right now I am putting drops of L52 into to my tea. I have a bit of a cold and L52 is a homeopathic treatment that you drink. It doesn't have much flavor but it seems to be doing something...

Underneath the mug you have the old faithful Bescherelle of French Conjugation...anyone who has studied French probably recognizes it. Currently, I am taking French classes at the Sorbonne, trying to improve my level so that I can enter into French university.

Anything else? My old Nikon FM-10, that I stupidly thought I might be able to use its lens on a DSLR but it is really isn't going to work.

(My screen is Dell but I am actually a MAC user. Always have been, always will be. My laptop is under my desk, acting like it is not a laptop.)

Did I miss anything?

I did eat a very good truffle today.

Sarah,

Call me stupid but I had no idea of these university plans! Very cool. ANGLOS INVADE THE FRENCH UNIVERSITY, ONE GIRL AT A TIME!

My pocket Bescherelle is my godsend. I love it to bits, and it goes to the uni with me every single day. A month ago I even used it to correct one of my teachers (a FRENCH one, none the less) on the subjonctif imparfait of some verb. Go me! ;)

I have a favorite mug as well. It has sheep on it. David doesn't even think about giving it to someone else. hehe.

Actually, I didn't notice you had drank out of my tea mug, I was impressed that Thibaut let me use his mug. I have a mug at home that's just my mug. It has a groundhog on it. It's so kitsch but I love it. My husband gave it to me and I use it everyday.

I own a Besch, too. And when I was in Uni, I corrected a French teacher of mine on the subjonctif imparfait, too! That's such a wacked out tense! But for some reason I know it. :)

Thanks for heads up on the L52, I'll have to remember that one.

On its way to a quiche...

I always have a lot of cool ideas for photos but I just don't know how to create them. I really want to take more of myself, even some that push my limits a bit but the days are so gray here lately. I don't want to just take pictures everyday. I want to challenge myself - whether it is artistically, technically, or emotionally.

I'm not sure if this photo falls into any of those categories but I think that a year from now I will look back on all of these photos and ask myself what they represent, I know that this one will represent many things for me. Shallots and leeks - on their way to becoming a quiche. At the moment, they are downstairs cooking slowly and filling the house with a delicious smell. Leek quiche is definitely a comfort food for me, I could eat it all the time. Someone once told me that they cook garlic and onions sometimes just so their house would smell warm and cozy.

I was originally planning on using this photo today because I included a special element for our favorite guru...but I like the one above better.

Don't get your hopes up Philippe...

@BellaGaia: I like photographing food. It doesn't move. I am pretty sure there are some Flickr groups devoted to food and you are right, culturally it is very interesting...

Thanks for visiting...

I second Aimee for the quiche recipe. I love spinach quiche personally, and would love to try this.

I really like the colour variants in this photo, along with the DOF. I think this is a very successful shot.

ok... way behind:

- 8.jan: I love when we do shot like this - I'm saving mine until I have no photo at 23:55 in the evening... but I will post one (at least) of my desk!!!! In some ways - it is very personal, it is what we are looking at everyday when we write these little posts. It is our space, our 'privacy', and posting it here is inviting all the others to see it.

- 8.jan ... ghost photo: me.. confuuuused

- 9.jan: Food food food - gosh you guys - I find at least 3 food photos everyday... again.. must be French influence thing. Send Heiða the Quiche recipe - I'm a lazy cook.. ;-)

I've learned some French in school, beautiful language, but soooo complicated ;)

I love that kitchen shot!
Beautiful!

Do you have a quiche recipe at hand? :)
sarahwoo Posted 12 years ago. Edited by sarahwoo (member) 12 years ago
@tommune: Thanks...I don't know how long these moments will last but I am cherishing each and everyone one of them.

@Samrag: Sorry but you are going to have to remove your star! It is not my photo..like I said above, ENVISAGE posted it here by accident. I have left messages, alerting them to the mistake but it is still there and I can't remove it. It is a nice shot but I wish it would go away so that people stop giving me credit for such a nice shot.

@ Quiche recipe: Well, I don't actually use a recipe. I just sort of wing it everytime. It always turns out good though. Here is what I basically do:

4 leeks at least (you want it to be really leeky)
2 or 3 shallots (sometimes I use onions and/or garlic)

Chop up the white part and the tender green parts of the leek and chop up the shallots. Cook these in butter over low heat for about 20 minutes or until they soft and almost creamy. Don't let them burn! Near the end of the cooking time you should add salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Preheat the oven to 180 - 200C or 350 - 375F.

In a bowl beat 4 or 5 eggs.

Add about a cup of shredded cheese to the eggs. I use Emmental or Gruyere...both are similar to swiss but not exactly...

Add two large tablespoons of creme fraiche. You can check out this website for creme fraiche subsitutes.

Or you can simply add milk, about a cup. This will create a more lighter, airy quiche but it is still good. All of the flavor is in the leek mixture anyhow.

Today I added a bit of milk to my egg mixture because it just didn't seem like enough. Sometimes I add another egg. You have to cook the quiche a few times to find out what combination works for you.

Now, some recipes suggest mixing all the ingredients together and then pouring it into the pan. If your leek mixture is still quite hot you don't want to mix it with the eggs right away. If you are impatient, like me, I put the leek mixture in the bottom of the pan and then pour the egg mixture on top. The cheese is not as well dispersed but I don't care. It is probably better to let the leek mixture cool a bit then mix everything together before pouring in the pan.

As far as quiche crusts, I have been cheating and buying premade crusts to save time but I have used this one several times with great feedback. If it the mixture still seems too liquidy, I add wheat germ to it until it is a good dough consistency and then spread it in the pan. Or you could just add more flour. (You might have to make more dough depending on the size of your pan; see below.)

So, make sure the crust is in the pan, pour in your mixture and then bake for about 30 - 40 minutes or until the top is starting to get golden brownish. I really don't know how long it bakes, I just wait until it looks right...

I use a wide tart pan but you could also use a pie pan.

Sorry if this is confusing! Please ask if you have any questions or feel free to give me suggestions to improve the recipe! Good luck!

Here is a photo of the finished product although a quiche is not easy to photograph. A slice would be better but we have not eaten it yet... :)

It seems I'm not able to come here everyday.... Had so much to read and so many days....

So, I love the way the photo of that play come around. It's so clear and so nice. The guy as a great face too.
The quiche, I'm having a bit of that myself, one of these days, thanks for the recipe. The pic of the shallots and leek is a very good one, I think.

The Bathroom Shot
Currently listening to...HEM Rabbit Songs...

Stupid Mouth Shut
But someday when my heart exhales
I'll tell you everything
These sweet words spilling all about us
I'll say please please be with me
And I'll breathe so easily
But instead I'm turning blue
I look at you
And keep my stupid mouth shut

If I haven't expressed this clearly already, I really really really want to take more self portraits. I read on another photo diary...I will have to go find it after and link to it (or if you know who I am referring to, let me know) that everyone should at least take a picture of themselves in the bathroom once. I can't say this is the first time I have it done but it is definitely the first time I have loaded one of them onto Flickr. You see, I'm not afraid to take pictures of myself and I am just afraid to share them. I usually delete them right away because I am so disappointed. This one...I can deal with. I think it looks like me.

Over in the birthday discussion we have been talking about celebrating birthdays by posting a nude shot. (I don't know where the discussion has gone since I haven't been back for several hours...) So basically, I need to build up to a nude shot in September...that gives me a long time to slowly take more and more daring photos of myself.

God, I love that album.

And I'm looking forward to watching your self-portrait evolution!

Ihhaaa! Luckily I have till november to get in shape for the birthday-suit shot.. :D If I wasn't a preemie I might be celebrating my 31st birthday just about now... ;)

I'm also a bit shy being in front of the camera instead of behind it. But I'm working on it - have gotten quite a few good ones (out of a gazzillion) lately. Keep it up!!

Yes, this does look like you. I, too, am looking forward to watching your self-portrait evolution. It's going to be great... as for a nude shot for your birthday? Hum... I don't know!

edit: I meant a nude shot for MY birthday! You could so pull it off, Sarah!

I can't wait until you get your new DSLR, I think you'll be shooting yourself more and more.

I think self-portraits do help to get rid of the discomfort of being in front of the camera, at least that's what they've done for me :)
