New year

These paper lanterns are at the approach of temple shrine near my house.
Each lanters carries wishes for 2007 from people.

I didn't donate but I wish 2007 will be good year.

a good and sweet 2007 to you.

In many ways it's as if we've boarded ship, as a group. I wonder what this group will be like in one year's time!

Today I went to the town where I grown up.
Haven't walk around for more than 20years...

Like other small town, things changed.
Becomes more convenient and get similar to other town...
Old shops closed, or almost dead.

I've just walk around and took picture. Try to find something reminds that days :)
Then I get tired and start smoking.
exAshtray says "please don't throw it here".
Small green leafs makes me smile.

Yeh - how wrong is that - exAshtray....Like the shot, but just love the one for 1.jan. Bookmarking you straight away.

The concept of the group is great, and I have a feeling that those of us that will stick to it - that will still be here at the end of the year - will have become good friends indeed...

Look forward to seeing more from you.

Hi Samrag,
Thankyou very much for kind comment.
As you say the concept of this group is so interesting.
I am really excite about the group would be.
Also I will use Qoop service at the end of this year to make 190pages of 2007 book. Must be great.
Let's enjoy :)

Today, I really have nothing to do.
Just help my father to take bath, not going out.
Weather's groomy. So I just open the door and took picture of the tree in front of my house.
Every time I go out, I saw this tree but never get tired of watching.

And tomorrow I go out for Shinjuku and meet my friends.
Will be fun!

That's exaclyt what i think is really interesting in this project:

i always want to make a trip to Japan, with this diary i would seen the everyday life in Japan.

that's funny i've to create a new folder in my IE favorites for adding the diary i want to read everyday...this one is the second on the list (héhé the first is mine :)

have a good evening (or morning...i don't know with the jet lag :)
Samrag 12 years ago
I already have soooo many bookmarked that I've created groups of "checking daily", "checking weekly","READ","official"... etc... but then again I am a bit anal when it comes to organizing.

Trees are special!

Hi glucozze, thanks for adding bookmark :)
And I hope you can visit Japan one day.
As you guess, Japan is so different(from Paris or anywhere) so if you come, you'lll find fun. If you get ticket just drop me a line we can meet up at Tokyo :)

Samrag, thanks for good idea. I am also one of the most disorganised person about book marking. I already make groups for book mark.
"Daily" "Weekly" "when I feel like to".

(write on 5th)
It was quite busy day.
In the morning, I have to meet my ex-father in law.
And have lunch together, some conversation...
Then move to Tokyo to meet friends.

It was fun. Because of bowling I got muscle pain.
We drunk till midnight so I end up to stay in famous Capsule Hotel( www.flickr.com/photos/dolloi/346275490/ ).

Shinjuku is the most familiar town in Tokyo as it's close to my university. But recently I didn't visit so much(only short time, jsut for drinking).
So it was fun to walkaround and taking picture.
(You can find some of them at my page www.flickr.com/photos/dolloi/)

Shinjuku is one of the biggest town in Tokyo, and famous for "Kabuki-Cho". Sex shop, Prostitute, Pub, Ripping off bar(;P)... 2nd district is famous for Homosexual people, there are many fun pubs.
Walk towards Okubo, you can find "Love Hotel" area. And cross the main road, you cross the border. You can enter foreign country.
South America, Korea, Russia, Philippin, Thai etc... bit dodgy area.

And next to Hanazono Shrine area called "Golden Town"( www.flickr.com/photos/dolloi/346275287/ ).
Used to regal prostitution area(in English it's called Red Light District, but in Japan used to call Red Line District. The reason is Police draw red line on the map to show area.. different culture diferent name :) ), now it's small pub area.
Place is getting more and more sophisticated, but in the 80s still there are many movie directors, writers, artists came, so it was quite fun area.

Hmm, it's became guide of Shinjuku :) not like diary...
Anyway it was fun to meet friends (and get drunk).

since i've seen Tokyo Eyes, i want to go here :)
and they talk a lot about the red line district in Ichi the Killer or Koroshiya.
What a crazy photo the capsule hotel !!! the coffin we see...is it a room ? or it's the bed in the room ??
if it's the room, i'm not claustrophobic but...i will have fear to smother in :)

Hi glucozze,
Thanks, I am happy to hear my little guide helps :)
And have you read "Ichi the Killer"? wow! That was one of the most crazy comics. I didn't know that is published in French... may be France has long history of BD. Has lots of torelance for comics I guess.

About capsule hotel, first guess is correct.
Upper part is my room and my bed(room 75). Lower is someone's space :D
Don't worry, when you come, I will take you no problem :)

As I wrote, I don't have camera with me today.
So I use my mobile to take picture.

On the way to pick up my phone, suddenly train stops on the bridge.
Announce says there are strange noise from rail.
There are no problem after all, everybody illitated with delay but for me not. Because there are not so many chance to take picture from middle of railway bridge.

From tomorrow, work starts :(
And I have to process films wich I take during this holiday.
......and scanning. booo

This club acitivity is very interesting.. not regurally but about once in 2 month, we go to some sight seeing spot in Tokyo and take picture.
We meet at 9:00 in the morning, taking picture till noon....
That's all. Then later you send your picture to HQ.
Leader of club (Ichigo Sugawara) pick up some from each member.
(You can see them at tokyo.kanko-photo.net/top/index_x.html )

It is very interesting to get comment about your picture.
You will see how other people see defferently.
Anyway I really enjoy.

OK back to diary.. after work(their's not mine :P) we went to Photo Gallery.
For me it was so so. Kind of OK.
Then, we went for dinner and talk until 03:00!
It was fun, and I was drunk :)

It was impossible to find train after 03:00 in Tokyo.
I went Manga Cafe till first train starts.

Manga Cafe is kind of Internet cafe.
But they also stock huge amount of Manga(even small cafe, 10000-2000 comics).
People comes for Internet game, reading comics, for free drink, and lots of them came for cheap accomodation as each booth has comfortable sofa.

The one I went was huge Manga Cafe, you can even take shower!
You can't get good rest but Mega Manga cafe is another place to stay when you visit Japan :)

Today I took picture with film, so I upload picture from 10th.
Tomorrow I will process all film(I hope).

Very interesting choice in composition with your bus photo. The single, lone umbrella lying on the floor looks like it sadly has no one to belong to. Ironic and cool.

Word is very helpful, we can't do without. But some part of life, word doesn't help me at all.
May be this is why we all keep taking photos. all photographer knows the limit of word.

When you come to see Godzilla, Emperor's palace is 10min walk so you can see Japan's biggest creature's small statue and Japan's biggest home at same time :)
"tierdness of trip is decided not by hour, by distance you move"
I got this theory from ex-father in law(what a description!!).
Flight is just 1.5hrs it's much less when I take a walk on the weekend....

Anyway I am like zombie.
After I get home, I have to scan 5more films.... 120 film is so easy coz only 10frames.

Hello BellaGaia,

Quantity is the most difficult point when you cook.

And thank you very much for find out mistake!! It's avery shame of me but I always did this :P

Hi 'stee,
Aha! I found cooking friend then!
Hmm, baking sounds lots more of work.
May be I should try :)

Hi sunshinecity,

13th Picture, yes that was kind of extreme one but you can find it almost every Shrine. Thousands of peoples wish :)

And from next time when I upload food pic I have to watch out composition :D.

Hi glucozze,

Godzilla locates in the square, surrounded by buildings. One of the building is Toho(company who film Godzilla).
And the place Godzilla destroy at first was this area :)

That Xmas tree was window display of the department store.
Cool isn't it?

And the strap, just buy 4 thin strip of leather then you can make it.
Takes about 20min if you don't make mistake(my case takes more than hour ;P )
I always carry 1 compact digital camera and film camera(99% of the day).
Then some people in the office start to interested in photographing.

Before, photographing was regard as Otaku's hobby.
In eary 80s go to concert and taking picture of idles were very popular.
another stream was taking picture of train.
Both of them I haven't try so I can't say anything but it doesn't appeal to the girls.

Idle photographer's one of the goal was collect money and buy 300mm f2.8... wow.
Also 300/2.8 was those days professional photographer's must item.
So I didn't know egg or chicken.

Those days Leica was not so popular to the mass(as today or 90s). Than SLR and 300/2.8.
But in 90s Leica became trendy item(I wasn't in Japan so I don't know how much trendy that days). People rush to buy Leica, and around Ginza(I read in the book) Leica Fans used to walk around hung their Leica without film.
When they meet someone who hung Leica, they start to talk about their Leica about it's rarity.

"Serial is 89xxxx, hmm nice M3 double stroke from 1956. Aha, lens hood is from same age."
"Thank you :) please release the shutter. Don't worry there are no film in it."
"Ohh, really well maintained. Such a silent camera. Please see mine."
etc etc...

May be this is too extreme, but there's no smoke without fire. There are some truth in it.

Anyway, now in Japan taking photo is trendy hobby. Especially to the girls.
Thanks LOMO and HOLGA, I can hung camera without piercing sight :D.

Hi ebilflindas,
Otaku exist always, they don't care whether it's trendy or not. That's what Otaku for :).
Taking analogue picture is trendy.

Somehow relates to Otaku, but Leica story sounds stupid, but this extremeness(?) is part of Japanese culture, and reason of quality.
"spend so much energy which doesn't required so much".

And finally I finish white stew.... brop...
Today I got new shoes, also William Eggleston's "Faulkner's Mississippi" has arrived!!
And it's really good book.
Some of picture from this book is also in his other book. But this book almost good as "Democratic Forest".
I am happy :))

lol funny shot :)

Otaku, one of the word wich is the most difficult to understand...
the first time i read it, it was in a roleplaying game book: Shadowrun (i don't know if it now in Japan, a cyberpunk game with things like the Matrix + guns + troll, dragons, goblins .... a big mess :D

they talk about Otaku: young men at the top of the technology (in fact who use the technology more than the usual and best users of it), who have got a fetich for all the new techs (like an american geek), and been surdoués (think the english word is overskilled)...

so there is Otaku in the photo world too ?
or the real meanness of the term is other ?

Hi Frère Jacques ,
Thanks, I like your photos they are great.
I bookmark your diary :)
Also looking forward to see your Japanese pics.

Hi Ladybadtiming,
Yes he can be contender but I will not vote him :P

Hi glucozze,
Sure I know Shadowrun :)
After Willam Gibson's eary cyber punk stuff those images were pop in Japan too.
Personally I prefer 60s New wave of SF, they are more imaginative.
Anyway that's another story :)

Ok, about Otaku,
There are several story about origin of the word otaku.
In Japan, Tkyo is divided by "Ku", District in Paris.
And first Manga convension was held in Ota-ku public hole.
From that Ota-ku -> Otaku was born. This is one story.

Another story is like this. In Japanese word, there are so many
different ways to say "you". Anata, omae, kimi, etc....
"Otaku" is also one of them.
Recently not so many people use that word. Only old generation.
When they use it otaku contains "I don't know about you but don't want rude".
So there are distance between two people(hard to explain, sorry).
And people who could categorize Otaku actually use "otaku" during conversation in eary 80s.
Then they are called "Otaku"

I don't know the definition, coz in the 80s I was in the computer game business.
You know, I was deeply surrounded by "Otaku" :D

Anyway, you can take whichever you like as origin of "Otaku" :)
After work, I went bookstore.
One of my colleague interested in photography now.
After get text(?) book, we went for dinner.
On the way, one stray kitty at park.
I don't know why he started to play(or attack) with me.
Why he coose me! But cute cat. I play a little and take picture.

Restaurant we went was very old Japanese style Korean Barbeque(it's different from Korean BBQ).
Building itself is tilt but tastes good.
Also as usual at old restaurant, people are so friendly.
We chat and drink a lot.

Then around 21:00 I got a phone call from my old friend, visit Hakata now.
After he join we started drink again till 3:00.

But Good drink doesn't make you hang over.
Was fun.

Thanks for the explanation !
'stee 12 years ago
it's true what you say about good alcohol. that's why i don't drink tequila anymore - it's hard to find good tequila that doesn't cost a bomb and bad tequila makes you so very, very ill.

i had a look at the photo of the cat - he seems awfully well-fed for a stray!

Squid Sashimi
Hi glucozze,
Please check out added information :)

Hi 'stee,
I ment good alcohol means drink with good atomosphere but what you say is also right. Wnen you come to Japan, don't drink Sake at cheap place. You will regret... I believe me.
I reccoment beer and Shocyu :) Less chance to get stuck :P
Today, we have guest from states. He is Japanese so don't have to care about where to go.
So we went traditional pub "Izakaya". Which is famous for good sashimi.

One of the most famous around here is squid sashimi.
I think most of the people who tried squid(Ika) sashimi, you found squid is white, but really fresh one is transparent as you seen in picture.
But don't expect to find this in Tokyo :)
Bit difficult to find in the city.

These days, photograph becomes popular in my office.
EOS Kiss, D200, yesterday was D80, people starts to get camera.
Also one designer is thinking about getting Natura and other is looking for LOMO.

4 camera out of 12 people's office.
Looks like small photo club in the office.

Today's picture is from 2nd of January.
With my brother I went small town. We used to live there 20 - 26 yeas ago.
"As usual" after 20 years shops, buildings and houses getting worn out.
Also small town economy is not so good.

Here and there in town, I can find place just same as before, also place totally gone.

But old home town is home town.
Good place to go.

new stuff
To get more chance to excercise, I planned to get road racer.
But I change my mind and get Inline skate.

Now, inline skate is not popular at all. As a result very hard to find in the shop.
Buying things in Japan is very good but the problem is only "In" stuffs are on the shelf.
Finally I found at internet shop.

I just finish first day practice, was good. I don't know when I can use this to go to my office though :P

Tomorrow I fly back to Tokyo.
Tonight I meet my old friend.
Hope I won't miss my flight.... no, I have to get ticket first!!

i love the photo for jan 26th - it reminds me of some of singapore's underground train stations. i think a lot of urban asia shares a similar aesthetic.

I'm bad at in-line skating, too. I can't use them to get to work. They're fun, though. Good to play. =)

I haven't roller skated in years. I am old school though. I require four wheels on my skates with some bright pop-poms on the toes. Bells on the pom-poms are a plus!

First time for me to be in the professional photo shooting.
It was fun but really exhausting.

Also color and BW film... 3bodies were not enough at all.

Anyway it was really good experience.
Also Korean BBQ dinner was really nice.

Hi 'stee,
Thanks, I am happy to hear friends recover.
And Moo is great you should try :D
Get out from bed around noon, cleaning, washing, etc etc...
Tonight we have guest from Tokyo :)
Tomorrow we are going to taking picture.

Every one who will join tomorrow are bit excited to take picture with professional photographer.
So we arrange small party at night.

Party was ok, but owner of restaurant is really special person.
Really pushy, bit rude, just interested in repeating customer... if food wasn't good.... anyway party was ok.
But owner's song was terrible...

For tomorrow we go home quite early.
That is why I use tripod and taking picture of my room :P

on 14th we have board of meeting... so actually busy but also mentally busy.
I don't like monday as Boomtown Rats sung, I am bit down.
Hmm, have to find the way to going up :)

This picture is sighn of drinking stand.
In Hakata, there are many drinking stand called "Yatai".
Kind of trolly, so in the evening people drag trolly to the city and starts drinking stand.
Can't find so much in Tokyo but there are so many in Hakata.
Really asian scenery. Reminds me Seoul a lot.
Hakata is geographically center between Seoul and Tokyo.
May be in the center also cultual side.

Toka Inari New Year
Hi BellaGaia and Iramiro520,
Thanks :) Lucky enough, that is not my kitchen, but now I have to go to kitchen for washing!!!

Hi 'stee,
Yes, the word means dragon and palace.
But this name is from old fork tale called "Urashima Taro".
The guy help turtle. Then turtle invite him for undersea palace.
There he spend so good time. After 3days he wants to go home coz he worried his mother.
When he arrive beach, everything has changed. Coz 100yeas passed since he left.
He was lonely and sad, then he opens the box from queen of the palace which he should never open.... and he receive all years passed.
This palace called Dragon Palace.
So if I enter this stand, I will forget about time(and money :P)
When I clean my room. I Always find unprocessed film.
This is from 10th of January.
Compare with picture of that day by digital camera I can say I prefer film much more than digital :)

It's funny, I took quite similar picture as yesterday.
Looks I am in the same mood as yesterday.

But today I find good restaurant very close to my house.
Tomorrow I fly to Tokyo so I can't cook tonight.
So I enter one Korean restaurant looks not so populer.

As I entered.... I was really surprised. Interior, atomosphere, attitude, food, everything is just like in Seoul.

Anyway food was nice, after a while owner became really nice.
When I leave, she grab some food and put into my hand.
She refuse to take money "we can't expect any more guest tonight. Use microwave! Tomorrow breakfast.".

Sometimes it's hard to find the difference between rude and shy.
But most of the case, I find people are shy.
