I think it's more representative of the excess that we have here in the US. In recent weeks my daughter has become aware of the plight of some people here in our own back yard (I think she thought starvation only occurred in third world countries) and she marveled that in her whole life she'd never ever had an empty cupboard). I always grew up with plenty but I've never taken it for granted. I am grateful to be able to have it and I think that's why it bothers me to throw it away. I'd rather give it to someone. The delimma is that I like to cook but don't eat so much.

Yeh... I had similar thoughts on New Years Eve. It is a custom here that every household in Iceland purchases Fireworks. When I was young... younger that is my parents used to spend maybe 2000 icl.kr. on fireworks, but today families are spending up to 100.000 icl.kr. It has become this mad mad mad thing. This new year Icelanders purchased fireworks for nearly 1.000.000.000 icl.kr. We had not stop firework over the city all night. There were warnings that the level of smoke were hazardus... Do we really have this much money, that we can just set in on fire once a year!!1

Great view - Went to LA 2005 on business, and didn't have time to go and check out the sign - always regret it - will have to come again to have a look (after all, along with photographing movies are my biggest hobbies).

Great photo!

it's definitely a city that breeds cynicism.... the city destroys much of the natural beauty by over building, but some of the beauty here can't be destroyed, the sky, the mountains, the sea. The city itself has a beauty about it with all the lights and colors and all the different people who flock here....;

i think that's some of the fun that can be had with this blog -- showing some of the well known and not so well known sights in and around town..... i took a few other pix today and posted a couple in my regular stream.... i don't know if i'm limited to only one a day, but i'm clearly taking more -- i practically got in a car wreck trying to snap away as i was driving. I live and work near the mansion that was used in the old batman series. it burnt down last year but is still; there. it looks so cool in the late afternoon sun -- i just have to get over to the bridge on foot to shoot it because you can't park your car there

BellaGaia says:

@PutYour... I wish I made them -- I don't have the patience or skill, for that matter. My househelper made them and shared some with me.

@glucozze -- you're right they make everything look so larger than life here. We were talking about it yesterday how miniature most actors are. They are so much shorter than you would imagine. For instance, I think Tom Cruise is only like 5'8. Jessica Simpson is only 5'2". and my daughter says Frankie Munoz (whoever he is) is 4'10"... which is frightening to imagine for a teenage boy.

@ urban -- I'm excited to get to peek into so many people's worlds through this project .

Yeah, they'd have you think that the sign is gargantuan -- it's pretty big though, you can see it from very far away.

@Samrag -- LOL == I was trying to downplay that. She comes once a week. I'm a single parent and that was a conscious choice I made when my daughter was born. I determined that I work WAY too hard already to spend my weekends cleaning up and that my daughter would appreciate the time spent with me -- It's worked well -- especially since I am somewhat of a clean freak anyway (quite a struggle because I have so much damn stuff in my little house). People are always amused when I say I've got to go home and get ready for the cleaning lady. I always tidy up thte night before she comes. My theory is that she's there to clean not pick up after me or anything like that.

Anyway, I did take pix, I just didn't get to get them posted.

January 4, 2007 --

Today we went shopping in Beverly Hills at Barney's with my dad -- he used to live here in So California in Santa Monica. He says he misses the delis and so we went to Junior's in Westwood for lunch. He also was reminiscing about Barney's in NY about how 30 or so years ago he bought some suits there for about $300 apiece. Well, the suits there are now about $2500 (and that's the low end) There was a Tshirt for $1000 -- I kid you not. It was silk, but really nothing special. He ended up buying a beautiful lavender cashmere sweater that was on sale. He got a good price for it.

My first day back at work this year. I haven't been there for a couple of weeks. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time catching up on email and phone calls. Tonite when I came home I began deconstructing Christmas at my house... took all the ornaments off the mantle, piano etc. Saved the tree for Saturday....

santa threw up

I actually took some shots today that I like better of the decorations, but I don't want to cheat, so I'll just post the one I took on Friday and well, I guess you have to look at my photostream to see the others.

These are my 70 year old father's feet. The tattoos read MOM and DAD but from this angle look like some alien lettering. He did them himself when he was a teenager. He has some pretty wild stories and one involves him landing in some trouble and spending some time in a juvenile detention center (reform school sounds so much cooler, doesn't it) He did the tatts there -- he has some other scribbles on his arms and legs that he did at the same time.

So now that my houseguest is leaving this evening , I'll do my best to not miss my postings :-)

Today's photo is reflective of my day a bunch of stuff, not terribly well focussed that is filling but not satisfying. I Worked around the house this morning, putting away the christmas decorations; continued to update software in my new computer ; baked some bread , exchanged a few gifts at the mall and then came home and made some beef barley soup from (from my left over oxtails from New Years). So you see, I did quite a bit but nothing too exciting.

Funny you should mention that Leesure -- My (father)
talked more to me in those 4 days than I could imageine possible -- in four hour intervals. Friday night he was talking away and I started dozing so he let me go to bed around 10:30. I was afraid to get up at 6:00 for fear that he'd hear me and start up again.... he did. He talked from about 6:15 till nearly 11:00. Lots of stories .... some about him and (my mom)

-- they weren't married. I called it an affair because my mom was married to somebody else -- he adamantly denies that it was an affair. He said they were together from May to September -- Summer lovin' had me a blast....). I was getting really irritated when he talked about her and their time together (trying to make sense of it) because I've worked through it and I don't blame him for not being there while i grew up (she did take me to see him when I was 1 1/2 yrs) -- she didn't give him the choice, she went back to her husband -- and he had no idea that my childhood wasn't idealic until later when we reunited (when I was 21). I cried a couple of times and it was a bit much for a Saturday morning over coffee....

it was a tough tossup for me to choose between this one and this one
My guilty pleasure (one of them) is buying shoes -- I have a lot... over 100 easily. i think every girl should have a pair (or more) of shoes that make her feel like a princess and make her walk just a little taller and elegantly
These I like because they're very comfortable and, sexy, i think in a kinda bondage sort of way LOL. Anyway, what you don't see as well on this photo that is VERY clear in the other is that my toenail polish is horrifically chipped. I expected to make it to the nail salon today, but couldn't get an appointment until Friday -- closed toes tomorrow for sure! And a haircut -- going very short.....

Well this is a big shift from the last shot -- I was planning to get a shot of my new haircut, but I didn't get it cut today :-( that pix will have to wait. Today I worked on fixing a Lotus Notes database for a good part of the day and came home and was very unhappy to find that my child has lost her second viola this year.... this one she had for one week! Please keep your fingers crossed that it was turned in at school tomorrow. Anyway, despite the foul mood I am in, I looked around desperately to see what I could photograph for today -- and I decided to share quite possibly the cheeriest thing in my house....

I shop in a variety of stores and I have expensive and cheap shoes.... If they're pretty i buy them. Lately, I find that I shop a lot at the Nordstrom's shoe sales. I got a pair of $350 Coach boots for $140 in December -- They're quite cute -- haven't photographed them yet. That's good! If she's barely 12, your sense of humor's got a lot of work ahead of it!

Wow, your self-portrait is stunning! You should do more than one a month!

I also like the photo looking down on the makeup counter (that is a makeup counter, right?).

I actually took a lot of pictures today. and now i have to choose.... many of the pix were taken out of the top of my car as i drove over to the westside after work to get my hair cut. (i'll reveal that tomorrow)
I went to get my nails and pedicure done, i shot snow on the mountains out of my office window, i shot a little hummingbird out there too... and then there was the sun and the sky I shot pictures of hollywood, my haircut (with marlon Wayans in the background getting his hair cut) anyway, this moved me.

@sam -- I did ZERO editing -- not even cropped, which was chastised on my photostream. I know i should have cropped and gotten the hood of the car (not crack or snow) Bunaen & Sotonrich. Too late for this post, but I'll do it for the sake of a prettier pix on my photostream (and not be so hasty next time)

Been out today running errands. Got my blender fixed that's been riding in the back of my car for the last month and a half -- my daughter made her first smoothie, annoyedly told me she knew how to use the blender, then sheered off the top of the rubber rotar thingys. By the Way, Both violas have been found!!!!!! Took me one question to the custodian -- he knew. Of course, I'd asked her to speak to him but apparently she hadn't. I think she's been sufficiently scared into keeping up with it for the rest of the year thankfully.

I must run out to the car and bring in my stuff -- I have two juicy king crab legs waiting for me for lunch.... YUM! See u later today -- Photo to come!

ROFL!!

Love the fact that you did not edit it. Not that I'm against editing, but sometimes I think a good shot can just be left alone. KWIM?

yes, I'm happy we don't have to pay for them and I'm glad my daughter didn't have to go through feeling so bad about losing 2 this year.

Well -- another day is almost over and I am just about to post my picture for the day

as promised -- short hair (kinda not in the style it's supossed to be in, but oh well... -- it's cold here tonite -- below freezing and i was on my was home from my book club

the crabs were dieting so they just laid around while i snacked -- there's probably some cool witty comment i could make but i'm too tired to think of it at the moment LOL

It is cold, isn't it? It actually snowed here in San Diego--and no, not in the mountains, either! Nothing that stuck, but there were snowflakes falling!

And lovely to see you, Teresa!

A friend in LA was just complaining about the cold there.

Flowers blooming in NY in January and snow in San Diego. Something is wrong with this.

I am still hopefully we will have at least one good blizzard this year. The way things are going I may have to wait until July.
