Here I am checking for new comments on my photos.

Flickr has become somewhat of an obsession for me. Sometimes to the detriment of my blogging.

This project probably isn't going to help. But at least it is making me write something, somewhere.

Thanks to you both, and the same wish for you.

You know, Allen, I feel the sam way about Flickr sometimes. My blogging has slowed down since Flickr came into my life. Maybe this project will be a way to bring it together?

This is my life everyday. We bought the cadillacs of beds and have the same morning conversations with each other about how we'd rather stay under the blankie.

Thats how it feels around here this morning too. Very gray and rainy.

It's not exactly a Cadillac, but we do have a Select Comfort mattress, and it is tempting to just live in the bed.

It's sunny but cold here today, and I really didn't want to get up. The cat had other ideas, though.

Start Over.

That's the theme for the day. Plans to travel to France next month (first by Ali, then again by both of us at the end of the month) have fallen apart due to a mix up by another party.

Until we receive confirmation of the rescheduling of a meeting she has to attend, we can't schedule our flights/car rentals/other accommodations.

I'm afraid that by the time we know when we can travel there, that the fares will be much higher, if seats are even available.
I love getting up in the early morning. I face each day as an adventure. How exciting to have plans to travel to France--looks like a great price too.
Bon voyage.
PutYourFlareOn PRO 11 years ago
Oh, I hate it when you have to wait on other people to make your plans. That's so frustrating! But how exciting that you have an future trip to France! That price is about as good as it gets... keep us posted on the progress! Maybe you guys could attend a Flickr meetup in Paris while you're here. :)

We spent the afternoon shopping for cool electronic toys. I wanted a ROKU Soundbridge network music player (to free my laptop from the external speakers), and I needed to replace a broken compact flash card reader.

So we headed to Best Buy. I found those items, and then decided to go ahead and replace our ancient 802.11b wireless router.

So I also got a very cool Netgear Rangemax Wireless Router (802.11G/MIMO). Besides being much faster than the old one, it puts out a much stronger signal. That is, in part, due the seven internal switching antennas, which operate in different combinations to maximize your connection no matter where in the house you go.

The fancy lights in the dome on the top of the case indicate the switching.

It's very cool to watch.

About an hour ago, Alison and I asked each other, simultaneously, "What do you want to do for dinner?" We do that a lot.

We pondered the question, but neither of us could think what to do. So a few minutes ago, I headed to the kitchen in hopes of finding some inspiration. In the freezer, I found some ground lamb, a couple of tilapia fillets, some salmon fillets, and in the fridge, various vegetables.

Hmmmm. What to prepare? I got out our 5.5 quart Cuisinart sauté pan and set it on the stovetop. In it I could prepare the fish in some way. Perhaps with a glaze or a jar of Trader Joe's Mojito Simmer Sauce. Or I could make a curry. Lamb Curry? Or one with just vegetables and perhaps lentils. And what kind of lentils? We have red, black and green.

I'm still not sure what I am going to do.

January 7, 2007

Alison was asked to review the new Sylvester Stallone film, Rocky Balboa, for a local magazine.

Since it was a rainy and dreary day, and we didn't have anything else in mind to do, we decided to go see it. We checked where it was playing, and when, and decided to catch an early matinée. We ate last night's leftovers for our lunch, bundled up against the cold rain, and headed to the theater.

I have to admit that I have never actually seen any of the previous five Rocky films from beginning to end. Not even the original, although I have seen most of it through several viewings when it has been on cable. So I knew the back story of the main characters.

The new film was much better than either of us expected. Stallone was excellent as the aged, retired champion. A certain suspension of one's disbelief was required to accept the premise of this tale, but it wasn't hard to do.

Like the other Rocky films, it presents a story of the triumph of the human spirit against seemingly insurmountable odds. It's a feel good movie. And that was okay with me.

I love feel good movies. We'll probably go see this since my husband likes the Rocky Balboa movies. Some of them were really bad I must admit.

The Bokeh group I belong to here on Flickr mentioned this movie because it had great Bokeh through out the entire film. That's something I'd probably enjoy more than the movie.

Multifaceted

There's been some confusion in the comments to this photo since I posted it to my stream earlier this evening.

This is a man's ring. Mine, in fact. I had it made about 5 years ago. It hasn't had a good cleaning and polishing since. Until today. The jeweler who cast the ring and set the diamond for me took care of that.

While the ring was in the bath, he and Ali spent some time designing a ring for her. They came up with one and he is going to cast the ring and gather some diamonds.

In a week or two we will return to see what it looks like. Ali will also pick out a diamond for it.

We didn't do a lot today. We ate lunch at our food co-op café, did some shopping for household staples and other needs, and came home.

I spent the rest of the afternoon clearing my desk of paperwork. Bills, specifically.

I usually pay each bill the day it arrives, but this month I have been tossing them on the shelf of the computer desk. I've been telling myself for the past three days that I would get them all paid that day, but I was always able to find something more fun to do.

But I couldn't put it off any longer. So I buckled down and did it today. Thank goodness for online bill paying. Our bank offers the service for free. The majority of the bills were paid that way. I had three other things that I wrote checks for.

Once I was done, I kept up the momentum and organized my tax information. I am still awaiting some documents in the mail. But as soon as they arrive, I can get everything ready to go to my accountant. I couldn't file my taxes without him. My returns run upwards of 60 pages every year.

Then I spent way too much time shredding other documents that I no longer need to keep.

I hope your day was productive, too.

im so behind with reading other diaries - ack - I am a big fan of the rocky movies and want to add that Balboa is awesome - everyone must throw out movie number 5 which shall remins nameless and replace it in their box sets with number six which wil then become become number five - this movie makes it possible for rocky fans to once again hold their heads high - i am going to force myself to stop there - i loved balboa - and allan some suspension of disbelief is necessary for all the rocky movies :P
loved the bed shot - tells a great story and i can soooo relate

OMG! There's an alligator under the sofa! It's a Sofagator! (January 10, 2007)

We haven't done much of anything today, except recover from last night.

While sitting at the dining room table with our laptops, Ali working on an editing job and I writing my diary entry, we each enjoyed a cold beer.

When we got done, we ordered some wings to be delivered for our dinner. With them, we enjoyed another beer. After that, we spent the rest of the evening playing Scrabble. And drinking more beer.

By the time the game was over (Ali beat the snot out of me. I knew she would), it was very late. Well after midnight. We cleared the table, checked our email, and surfed the net for a while.

By the time we got to bed it was close to 2:30 in the morning. I was already getting a headache, but sleep came easily.

The cat woke me at 8:30 this morning, by chewing on my fingers. I manage to drag my ass out of bed about 15 minutes later and made a beeline to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee and take some Advil.

The house was quite chilly as I had left the heat turned down overnight. As I walked to the thermostat to turn it up, I looked down and saw the alligator poking its head out from under the sofa.

I grabbed my camera, and took this shot.

It took several large mugs of coffee before I started to feel human again. I finally took a shower and dressed. I then went to the grocery to pick up a few ingredients for tonight's dinner.

There is a black lentil and chorizo stew simmering on the stove. I need to fortify myself for UK's conference opener against Auburn this evening.

Go Cats!

Auburn came out loaded for bear, presenting the Cats with some of the toughest pressure they have faced this season.

But UK prevailed, winning by 17 points. It was a good start to the conference season.

As for the plush, it is actually an IKEA crocodile, but I like to say alligator, since Alison is known, in some circles as AliGator. ;)

January 11, 2007

I needed to park myself on the sofa in front of a roaring fire tonight.

I spent the better part of the day helping my sister select, purchase, and then setup and configure a new computer. She has been wanting to replace a 5+ year old desktop in a huge, heavy tower case for some time. This morning when she brought up the bookkeeping program for the company she owns, all of her data was gone. So today was the time to do it.

She was able to restore the data from backup disks. She does back it up every day. To floppy disks.

Ali and I went to her house around noon. I ran her virus scanner, Ad-Aware, a registry cleaner and Scandisk on the drive, but those didn't turn anything up. But, as I said, she wanted to get rid of the behemoth of a computer and replace it with a fast new laptop.

So, after a nice lunch at T.G.I. Friday's, we headed to Best Buy where she bought a spiffy new Toshiba Core-Due Pentium M computer with lots of RAM and a big hard drive. She also bought an external hard drive to make the backing up of her precious data faster, easier, and more automatic.

The rest of the afternoon was spent getting everything set up. We installed Firefox, AVG, Quick Books, and the printer driver. Her company data was restored and the program was set to automatically backup the data to the new external drive whenever the program is closed.

The only hard part of the process was removing AOL, McAfee Anti-Virus, and some other crap that was preloaded on the laptop. She didn't need them, and didn't want them. Those companies don't make it easy to remove their programs once they are installed. But I finally got rid of it all.

I'm not a member of The Geek Squad, but I play one when called upon to help those close to me.

This is the highlight of my day. An early birthday gift from Alison.

She had been working on an editing job, and I was lounging on the sofa when the UPS truck arrived to deliver several packages. One of them contain this gift.

When Ali determined which one contained the coffee, she wrote Happy Birthday on it and gave it to me to open.

I love coffee and Kona has been at the top of my list of favorites ever since my sister brought a couple of pounds of Kona to me direct from Hawaii. But since I finished those two pounds, I have not purchased any for myself.

It is very expensive to purchase locally, selling for $50 per pound. It's much less than that at the source, and you can mail order it, but with the cost of shipping it is still more expensive than I wish to pay for coffee.

Ali knew I would not buy it for myself. We had talked about it in the past, coffee geeks that we are.

So she decided to surprise me with it for my birthday.

She's the best. Is it any wonder why I love her so much?

A New Day. A New Decade.

Today is my birthday. I am 50 years old.

I was planning on taking a goofy self-portrait to mark the beginning of the second half of my life, but I had a better idea.

I decided to change the look of my weblog by creating a new banner. This is a shot of the screen as I was putting the finishing touches on the banner in Photoshop.

The final result can be seen here.
sunshinecity 11 years ago
wow, that banner is cute!
I too change mine every so often...
What I REALLY need to do is sit down and design my own template... but for some reason it just scares me! I'm afraid it'll take me forever or that I'll be stuck somewhere trying to figure out how to do something, so I just don't attempt it...
I usually find some template I like and then start from there.... changing all the code, modifying to fit my taste etc...
I'm a chicken really... I know it's a cop-out...

I spent the late afternoon and early evening building this homemade light tent to use as a portable macro studio. Those who know me know I love to do macro work.

The plans for this were published on a photography blog called The Strobist. A friend brought the article to my attention a while back. I finally got off my butt and made the thing.

It took a couple of hours to put together. But I was being very careful in cutting out the windows in the box so as to not destroy it.

I took this shot to show what it looks like. I also took a few test macros, but I haven't processed them yet. I'll post them on my photostream later this evening.

I was using a cheap high intensity desk lamp as my light source, but I plan to buy Nikon SB-800 Flash to use with it.

The cheapest commercial light tent I could find on the web cost about $55. I think this was well worth the effort to save $50.

If you would like to make your own, the plans can be found here.

Unrelenting

It's raining here. Heavy rain. There are flood watches and warnings all over the state. This is the third straight day of steady rain.

It is also unseasonably warm. I was still awake at 3 in the morning, and what did I see fly across my computer screen? A mosquito! It's January, for goodness sake! It's supposed to be winter. All the mosquitoes are supposed to be dead.

The temperature is forecast to drop tomorrow for a few days. More in line with the norm for this time of year. And the rain should end as snow flurries. I hope the forecasters are right.

I guess I shouldn't complain about the rain. The plains states had several days of freezing rain and over 20 people lost their lives due to this storm.

But still, the relentless rain and dreary skies will suck the soul out you after a while.

Go ahead and bookmark me. You know you want to, ;)

The rain finally ended late last night as light snow flurries. This morning, the temperature had dropped below freezing. Time to turn up the heat a bit.

My Other Birthday Gift from Ali. (January 16, 2007)

I received a belated birthday gift from Alison today. If you remember my diary photo from the 12th, she gave me an early gift of Kona Coffee beans. This gift arrived today.

The two of us listen to Radio Paradise all the time when we are home. It is, in our opinion the best radio station on the Internet.

They play an eclectic mix of music with no commercials. The station is 100% listener supported, and has a very loyal listener base. We make regular donations, and this purchase from their store is another means of support for the station.

Ali bought herself one of these hoodies as well, and the owners of the station threw in a bunch of other cool stuff for free, as a way of saying thanks for the support.

It arrived at just the right time, as winter has finally arrived in Kentucky. It is really cold here today.

It is the second time today I "heard" about "radio paradise (the first time is when I read the profil of alithinks ... very strange :)) ... so I go to see what it is ... look at the playlist ... and the last song was "Depeche Mode - World In My Eyes" ... a very great song from one the best band (in my opinion) ... so I read the rest of the playlist ... so cool thing but perhaps to eclectic for me :)

Thanks. Yes, it did extend the joy of the celebration.

Give it a listen for a while. The mix of different types of music is what makes it special.

You're welcome. I hope you give it a listen.

Blue Sky Mine

Today the sun shone for the first time in over a week. I had almost forgotten what the sky really looked like.

There was a trade-off, however. It was quite cold. But I can live with cold. Soul-sucking dreary skies, I cannot.

I hope the skies were this blue where you live.

They weren't THAT blue but they had nice golden lined clouds

The clouds returned here today as well, but instead of being warm like it was last week, it was very cold.

I love blue skies while it's cold. It feels refreshing and it feels like the air is more crisp. Keep warm, and breathe well!

It Works! (January 18, 2007)

Alison and I spent the afternoon shopping for a new showerhead. When we were in New York City over the Christmas holiday, the bathroom of our hotel room had a rain style showerhead with an attached hand shower wand.

I fell in love with it the four days we were there. I have found similar ones through Internet searches, but none that were just like the hotel had.

So after lunch today we set out on a quest to find something at least similar at local outlets. We visited Home Depot and Lowes, but couldn't find what we really needed. We also stopped at a couple of bathroom fixture galleries that sold really high end stuff.

At one of them the sales woman told us that what we wanted to do was not possible with out going to a lot of expense. It would entail ripping out the wall and replumbing. I knew that what she told us was a bunch of BS. She was just trying to sell us something that cost hundreds of dollars more than we needed.

So we came home. I did some more looking around the web, and came to realize that I could accomplish what I wanted to do, with locally acquired, and relatively inexpensive fixtures.

Ali had an appointment late this afternoon for a massage, so after I dropped her off for that, I headed over to another Home Depot location. There, I found just what I needed. I purchased the pictured six inch diameter downpour showerhead, and a diverter valve to attach our present handheld shower to it.

When we got back home, I set about installing the new showerhead. It took a bit of time to get everything attached, and tightened to prevent leaks, but I finally got it done.

And it works! The rain shower rocks, and when the diverter valve is switched, the handheld shower delivers a good strong stream just like it always has.

I then cooked dinner for us. Ali offered to cook tonight, but I wanted her to relax and not lose the benefit of her massage.

I'm really tired now, but it is a good tired. There's nothing like a feeling of accomplishment to make the hard work seem worth it.

Yay for Radioparadise. It's the only station I listen to. Great lineup.

If you ever visit New York City, try to stay at the Marriott Residence Inn on 6th Ave at 39th Street. :)
