I can't wait to start the year.
There'll probably be a lot of pictures of my daughter, husband and dog.

Don't let that turn you off. It sounds mundane but luckily my daughter is very cute, my husband looks like Luke Perry, and my dog is pretty much the most un-photogenic dog ever so there'll maybe, be one shot if I'm lucky.

Seems like red is where it's at for me this week. At least thematically speaking. I got the Canon 580EX today (thank you Dell) and played around some. So far I really like, and can't wait to start playing around with off camera flash. A picture of my sprog, today to go with The West above.

I forget myself sometimes and take over 100 photos of Tristan (my stepson) in one day - and the horrible thing is that sooo many of them are just fantastic... not because I am that good, but kids are just such wonderful pallets for great photos.

This is a fantastic shot of ____ (your sprog with noname). No comment on Luke Perry ;-) and looking forward to seeing that dog!

So one thing about getting a new piece of equipment for me is the opportunity to learn it. You know set up all these test shots, to figure out what setting does what, and the best way to take advantage of your tools and get the best you can out of it.

Well this is the result of that for me. Trying to figure out my new flash, and manipulating the light to hit just right is a lot harder than I thought it would be, but is immense fun trying to get things the way I want them.

This is a drop of food colouring into a bowl of water. This is my fave from the 50 shots I got out of it. Enjoy.

First I'd like to thank everyone who takes the opportunity to comment. I'm very glad I joined this project, and am very dedicated to completing it this year.

Today was a crazy day, but technically my Friday, so I'm very glad it's over. My aunt is visiting from London and on my way to see her we detoured to another Aunt's house who lives nearby as well, because we basically got caught in the traffic jam from hell. Makes me very thankful I live in a rural area, let me tell you.

The Aunt whose home we stopped in at was in the middle of doing a presentation for a pyramid scheme (residuals) and The West got roped into sitting through the presentation. While all this was happening I went around taking pictures around her home. She had this great bowl of lemons with these cloves of garlic just hanging out in it. I liked the contrast so here's today's shot.

Been a bit of a busy weekend the last two days. I'm in fact a bit behind on my catching up on journals, but am very excited to see what I've missed.

Todays picture is a dual purpose of not only being my picture of the day, but done for the Tampa blog Sticks of Fire wherein I take photos of things/places around Tampa Bay and weekly the readers will try to guess where/what the picture is of. If they guess correctly there will be a Sticks provided prize. This is actually the first picture for it. It's a bit of creative advertising from one of our local liquor stores. I'm very happy with the outcome of this, as I drove around most of the day looking for what I felt was just the right picture to launch this off with.

So today it was like I had some sort of block. I could not take a picture I was happy with to save my life. I made another attempt at playing with my flash and food coloured water. This was the one that I liked best out of my selections, though honestly I'm not even sure I like it. How messed up is that?

On a happier note, thank you to everyone who commented on yesterday's shot. I was really happy with the outcome. Thank you all.

... I'd really like to know how you do this, the effect looks so cool!

Android9 PRO 12 years ago
@sunshinecity This was on a clear glass plate with just a bit of water on it, then a couple of drops of each colour and as they naturally started to blend a bit together I blew onto the plate two times to create the two separate depressions. You kinda have to blow a little hard so you can get the depressions before the colours blend completely. I had two lamps to the side, and bounced my flash off a piece of white foam board. In PS I bumped the contrast and did an S curve.

hope that helps. :-)

Today was a good day. Hard but good. Primarily good, because I got hired on as a Wedding Photographer for an upcoming one in May. This makes the second I have for the year. Which is very good. I've been at my current job for 7 years now. It was my second job ever; I know it backwards and forwards, and am in fact in the top 10 of the most senior people in my building (this Tampa branch has only existed for 8 years), so I'm pretty secure with things work-wise.

I get a lot of time off (3 weeks accumulated currently after taking the last 2 weeks of the year off, with an upcoming 6 more for the new year) so things are good there. All in all there are a lot of things that make my job worthwhile and somewhat fulfilling to the ego. Except you know...when you completely dislike your job. There are legitimately numerous reasons for me to dislike my job, but really the biggest issue I have with it, is that I never meant to work the industry nor position I currently inhabit. Never in a million years did I envision myself in cooperate America. My friends still laugh and mock me about it.

So I've always been a somewhat mediocre artist. I was good at it but never great. All this though did not mean I didn't have any ambition, and getting my camera and taking that first shot with it even though I had no idea how to really use it, was like saying hello all over again to my first love. I want to do it full time. I want to spend hours in front of my computer eaking out the good/great/bad shots, and giving a memory to someone. These weddings are a step toward that, and I can't wait for more things to come along in that direction.

So yeah, outside my little ramblings, todays' shot is two-fold. One I saw a post here out the corner of my eye while surreptitiously surfing Flickr at work (not like I can't but as the boss what kind of example would that set ;-) ) about books you've read on this group. Since I love this book I wanted to share it. I may have to go read the rules of the post to make sure this is applicable though. Just in case.

Not much going on today. I did a huge setup in my kitchen in an attempt at doing some highspeed photography, and yeah that was a total suck. My desk looks directly out to my back patio and consequently my backyard. As I doing some disk clean up a bit after lunch I happened to glance outside and was struck by the colour of the grass in contrast to the fence and sky. While the colours were no where near as impressive as it as the day before yesterday, it still caught my eye. I like the different takes on the same place. I've made a mental note to try and capture the surrounding landscape of this particular piece of my backyard throughout the year. It'll be interesting to see what the summer sky brings us.

This is if I sit at my desk, turn my head directly right, and look out to my backyard.

ETA: I was off on the angle at which the shots were taken though, as the first one on the 10th has the power-lines and this one doesn't.

@Sarahwoo - My grass is my husband's main symbol of success. When we bought this house two years ago the grass wast patching and mostly yellow with a hint of green spattered throughout. Over the course of that time my husband's really transformed it. I like how green it always is now.

@glucozze - Thank you. I don't know what it is, but now that I no longer live in the city I'm having some really great sky. Maybe it was like this before and I never too the time to look, whatever the reason I'm glad I have it now.

I live about a block or so, maybe a little more from the high school, so today after I put Chloe down for her nap, I took a walk. As apparent by the clouds it wasn't a very long walk, as it shortly after began to sprinkle. I got off about 10 shots before that happened. This is one of the better ones.

I wish I could take the electrical line out of the shot though.  Well I guess I could with photoshop, but really...who wants to get to that level of tedious-ness. I say this now but watch later in the year I'll be banging away in photoshop taking out a line here, a line there....

I guess it's the voyeur in me but I've always really loved the "what's in my bag" shots/groups I see on Flickr. As I spent most of the day in meetings from about 9am (I get to work at 7) onwards to the end of the day I had no time to really take anything, even as I brought my camera to work specifically to break the monotony of taking shots at home. Our CEO is visiting our site tomorrow with her normal entourage so we were prepping for that.

So anyway here's a shot of my very small purse and it's very limited contents. It's funny I used to have this huge backpack that I carried around everything my paranoid compulsive mind insisted I bring with me everywhere. When I started having toothpaste and a toothbrush with me my sister nicknamed it my 'hooker bag'. This purse has only been in my possession since October, and it's been an exercise getting rid of all the extraneous contents of my old bag. Sometimes I miss being able to reach in and grab pretty much anything to suit the circumstance, but sometimes it's pretty cool and liberating to only have about 8 things tops in your bag. So yeah, good times.

The purse thing... A girl that works with me has bag like you had - and I've tried to trick here... asked for weird things, like (elastic band, chewing cum, lickerish, deodorant for MEN, painkillers, pen&paper, tissue, etc etc .) - and she has always had it in her bag!!!

You smoke 2 cigs a day... and you can't quit... wow... smoking just two a day would have been impossible for me, I had to quit completely. If you quit smoking, you can stop carrying a purse - pen in jacket/shirt pocket ipod in pocket. Done!
