01/01/2007 - Transportation

01/01/2007 - transportation

Today, first day of the year, I've been travelling from the French Alps to my flat back in Antwerp. I've using:
- a bus
- a funiculaire (sort of train but getting up in the mountains)
- a TGV
- a RER
- a Thalys
- a train
- a tram
And after 12 hours of travel I'm now back home.
I guess this collection of photo is a good sum up of what was my day!

02/01/2007 - New coffee machine

02/01/2007 - New coffee machine

They've changed the coffee machine at work, bringing new meaning to everybody's work...

I've always hated the coffee they were giving us, there was coffee and expresso, the expresso being about half a centimeter less filled than the coffee, so not really a true expresso. Not to mention that the coffee beans, were in fact powder with no taste at all.
So I've brought my own expresso machine at work about two years ago.

Now that they've brought in this new real coffee machine (working with beans and able to do real french expresso, not yet italian though :o( I don't need my expresso machine (also a french one, Senseo, working only at low pressure).

Tomorrow I'll take my machine back and I'll sell it on ebay ;o)
It would have well deserved its retirement!

For the italian espresso.....I have found a solution for you.... even if only temporary, I will give it to you next time we meet! ;-)

lol taste before throwing your Senseo ! I've never taste a good machine-coffee...in fact they go from total shit to no taste...
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
When I've worked in Italy, I've discovered that automatic coffee machine can do real expresso, actually even ristretto, this is only a matter of coffee beans they put in, and quantity of water (The machine are all limited to low pressure sadly, not like the nespresso ones or the ones in real bar).

So to all of you: Ask your HR dpt to tune your actual coffee machine to make good coffee, it costs only the beans, the quantity of water can be changed at no cost!

Man, you'll be crying if you could see the coffee machine at my working place. Just pure crap and I still can't figure out why I keep drinking that stuff from it.

I think coffee is the best investment for any company:
- it is mostly water, even a ristretto, so cost is minimal
- maintenance cost of coffee machine is also low, if it serves only coffee (gets complicated with the chocolate, tea and other stuff)
- employee who drinks it get some energy, even after of use, and moreover they do it willingly
- taking a coffee with colleague, is the best place to actually achieve work. Everybody knows that most important decision are never taken at meetings, but between meetings: WC, coffee, lunch...

Therefore coffee in enterprise should be free and good!
*sweet coffee* 12 years ago
Your absolutely right!

It is so important to talk to your colleagues and have a good cup of coffee!
This morning when I arrived at work the machine on the first floor was not functioning! Lucky for me I had a good cup of nespresso before I left home :-)

Going home for the Christmas holidays made me appreciate really good coffee. The 'rentals have always had good coffee whereas I just have a cup of "insta-cafe" every morning. Yuuuck.

I guess the internet/digital commune I'm starting will need coffee machines too. Oy! What an enterprise!

03/01/2007 - First resolution

03/01/2007 - First resolution

When I arrived in Belgium, I was just above the 70kg (ok let's say 72kg)

Then I've adapted myself to the local regime and took over 15kg (almost 20kg), touching the 90kg...

...in less than a year...

So in 2006, I've lost weight again, with my last illness, I've been down by 10kg, and now back to 80kg.

My first resolution for this year is at least to stay below 80kg, and if possible go back down to where I came from, hopefully this would be easier when I'll back in France, back to the food I'm used too.

I have alreday my plans set up:

- go back to roller once in Paris (30km weekly)
- keep doing some sport in the morning just to wake up
- eat less. I've learnerd recently that I can survive with 500kcal/day, and live easily with 1500kcal/day, so I don't need my 2500-3000kcal/day, that are served to me at the company cantine
- eat better: stop the fries, reduce the beers, increase vegetables/fruits
- use the stairs: no I'm joking I'm too lazzy, plus I'm living on the 5th floor

That should do ;o)

Come on, dude, I leave on the 5th floor with no elevator, that's not soooo hard (I used to live on the 12th, with elevator, that I never took, even when coming back from grocery shopping... and tried to run upstairs as often as I could).
So here is the deal : when back, you'll come to my place, rune the 5 floors on roller blades, while eating carrots and drinking water.
You can do that every morning. Just when at my door, don't wake me, just go back downstairs and head for work.
Hehe.
:)

hey...would you not be too skinny at 70kg ???? Without flattering, I think you should stay as you are, 80 kg seems to be good!! :-)
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
70kg would too low for sure, I'm already fine at 80kg, I really don't mind that much.

The thing is not that I feel too heavy, I think I'm eating too much, and that's different. I can afford to eat, so I eat, but some people can't. Ok that's a given fact, and if I eat less, that won't give them food.

True.

But I don't like the idea that youcan see that I'm eating too much. I find this disrespectful. I find disrespectfull, to looks like someone who eats a lot because he can afford it. It's like showing off your luxury item to everyone, so that everyone sees that you're rich. You simply don't do that, at least that's what I think.

Ok some people are heavy, because it's genetic, but that's not my case, if I want to be fit, I know I can do it, so I should be fit, by respect.

I have no use of being fatter, even if I don't care that much about how my body is in itself.

So I'm fine at 80kg, I was fine at 90kf anyway, but I'd like to go further down to 75kg or something.

04/01/2007 - UPS

04/01/2007 - UPS

I just don't understand how a company can still work considering people are living like in the 50s.

Post companies deliver package during day time. Yes sure! I'm dad and I work during the day, but of course I'm married and my wife has nothing better to do that stay home to collect packages!

Come on!! Wake up!!

First of all I'm single, and believe me, I'm not the only one nowadays to "still" be single at my age.
Then, even if I had a wife, I won't ask her to stay home to collect my packages, she will most likely be also working during day time.

So why do they keep paying people to deliver packages at a time when nobody is at home??

But they thought about it! If I'm not home 3 times, I can still pick my package to a central storage, which, first of all, is open during day time only (so same problem) but which is also 50km away from where I live. In Belgium they have only one center in Brussels and that's it!
So I'm gonna burn 10L of petrol just to get my package, that's ecological for sure!!

That's clever, isn't it?

Why don't they put the package in a kind of big distributor. They go to your home, you're not in, they leave a note with a password, you go to the distributor, let's say, close to the central post of your town, as it is automatic, it's open 24/24 7/7, you dial the number, plus the code, and voila, here you have your package.

But this solution would be clever, and would cost something to the post companies.

Instead they rather have people, leaving work earlier, taking a day off to catch their packages.

At the end, the post company pay less, but the whole society is loosing money, because if I'm waiting for my package, I'm not at work producing values.

I could also make it deliver at work, but why should my company lose time (the guy at the reception has to treat this order, therefore works for me) and allow this, plus I'm working on a seveso site, and believe me, you want the minimum amount of people walking around a seveso site?

Welcome in a stupid world!!

I know it's really silly the way this companies act but you said it yourself, they only care about their profits not about what's best for the user.

Bienvenue dans le monde de l'absurde! :)
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
seveso site are named after the tragic incident in Seveso Italy. If my memories are correct, it was a chemical plant that exploded killing some people on site, but most important realsing a toxic gas upon the city, killing there many other people.

Based on that experience, Europe decided to create regulations dedicated to the specific risks involved with chemical, nuclear source, and petrochemicals, leading to the rules Seveso 1 and Seveso 2.

Any site, classified as seveso, must comply to very strict safety rules, safety study to see what kind of accident can have what kind of consequence, actions to reduce risk, actions to reduce impact of any incident, noise reduction, pollution reduction, minimal safety distance from inhabitants, from owrker as well, spefici safety integration between the site, the site next door, and the official firefighters

and so on and so on...

All of that, so that Seveso accident never happen.
The problem today, is that because building close to a seveso site was forbidden, unless the major says it's possible, many houses have been built for cheap close to seveso site.
Now they have realized they were actually living close to dangerous places ("strange, I never wonder why this house was 5 times cheaper than the other in the region, am I stupid??") they want the state to buy their house back (at the normal market price, sic!!) to go away from there.

Politics (the stupid major who let that happen), stupid people (the ones who did not ask the question, why is this one cheaper), and our taxes (who are going to buy back those houses).

Sometimes I really wonder if we shall save all species in danger, especially the stupid people specie, or shall we not help them to evolve to the average cleaver people specie for once. Well, yes and no, they might actually start thinking by themselves, they might consider voting for someelse than the ones in place, and they might even reconsider consuming like ogres to actually become reasonable, who wants that anyway?!

There might be an easy solution to that thing :
Stop paying people to deliver packages during day time, and start paying people to deliver packages beginning of the evening.
:)

[philippe leroyer - the milky bald guru on a day by day basis : too much pleasure for all !]
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
@kd5ftn: I've asked today and got the confirmation that delivering private packages at work is forbidden for safety reason and honestly I understand that.

@Alibaba0: merci, enfin merci Picasa ;o) mais j'ai pris du plaisir à prendre tous ces moyens de transport dans la même journée ;o)

@SillyKitty: the pb is that they will keep doing those things if they get money out of it, and the european population getting older, and the familly having babies are less but they tend to have then more baby, they are more and more people actually able to either be at home to get a package or go to the post office during working hours (old people can do it, and mother or father in familly with many babies tends not to be working, whereas in familly with only one or two children, the two parents can still keep both their work, try this once you have 3 children or more).
So my fear is that they won't go on with those solutions. I believe the solution is for buildings to have concierge back, but this has a cost of course. It assumes that if you're not home, you're working, so if you're working you can pay someone to care about that kind of thing for you. I don't like using those solutions, where easier solutions exist, I think that's why a state exists, the state should by taxes, promote the solution that creates the most value for everybody, whereas the market will, by itself, always promote the solution that creates the most value people by people.
In math, the mean value of the average, is not always equal to the average of the mean values. In this example, the sum of the best for each participant (me, the post company, the sender, my company) is not the best overall. The state should arbitrate those thing, because people are not clever enough, or are too selfish to do it on their own.

@Italian Papillon: If you want I can be your tour guide in Northern Italy ;o)

@SuzI suE: I would lolve to stay home the full day to catch the package of my neighboor, if she would ask the same way you do. Hélas, she is over 50, so I'd rather do it, without her asking this way in fact ;o)
And now I see we kind of have the same definition of "sport", a teamsport even ;o)

@dda1605: LOL

@Sontra: package arrived today at work, and I had to beg for my HR manager to let me have it, with the pormise I won't do it again!
I'm, however, still waiting for the sexy thong, but Netherland is not that far away ;o)

@Philippe: Well, you can't have all services at day and evening/night, or then you have to have it 24/24. I believe UK is richer than France, because company can work on sunday, which means they can creates more values.
We are living in a state, where we rather have people paid for not working ,that paying them to creates values. Any job is creating a value, however not working and purely consuming is not creating value, yes it does feed the system with cash, but this money comes from taxes, so already comes from something that created the value.
Why does the state forbidden night work and weekend work. If company would be free to offer those job, then, again the market will regulate itself, those jobs, being more demanding, will encounter less success, forcing companies to offer better salary for those.
But this works only if working assure better salary that not working, which today in France is not always the case, in some cases (luckily not all), it is not that you get a higher salary by not working, but it is that you can get a higher buying power by not working.
Next year I will won just above the limit of ressource to get any social help, so the extra 1000€ brutto I will get over a year will actually cost me much more than that (no 0% loan, no possiblity to ask a social flat, no reduction, full taxes....).
Work should always be valorised, because it creates values, it makes our country richer.

PS: that was a long post ;o)

I'm 115Kg for 1m87 in short I'm overweight. And I'm overweight because I eat. So if I understand you right, I'm disrespectful to others. Is that what you meant?

['o°] Click!
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
@photogrin: no, unless you feel this way.

I feel this way about myself, the notion of respect is personal, this text is a judgment about myself and myself only.

However (and it's not yet your case) when you eat to such a point that you're putting your life in danger, and if you're living in a country where you have true social security (like Belgium or France), then yes it starts to be disrespectful, like somking knowing you're going cost thousand of euro to the state, which means to other people.

If you're eating without reason, if you don't try to control youself (and I'm really talking about real fat people, way above your weight), unless it's genetic and you can't do anything about it, then yes it is selfish.

but don't worry, everybody is selfish, it's our nature.
Everybody want its own confort, to do what he likes, to own what he wants and so on, and if someone has to die for that, or some little boys have to work 16hours a day for less than a doller, then yes it's good for the rich and fat european that we all are in comparison to those littles children (and I obvisouly mean the asian and india population)

We should be ashame of what we are sometimes, but we aren't, because our media confort us to think we are acting the right way.
Yse we create values, and a lot, but I believe that most of us consume more values (and food is one of those, but oil is the most important one) to the expense of other people living in the "poor" countries.

It is fair to benefit from the value you're creating, it is unfair to benefit from the value other people create.

That's the way I feel, I won't say that the way you should feel, but that's the way I feel and that's why I want to consume less.

Over the past month I have taken a lot of small step to go into that direction, and I will go on this year, here is the list (partial):

- buy no unrechargable accu, even if rechargeable are more expenseive
- buy low watt lamps instead of normal bulb lamps
- get rid of my car (this year)
- eat less
- eat local production, so that your food is not imported (how stupid it is to eat bananas in Europe, they aren't even good compared to what a real banana is, try it once you get in Brasil or Africa and you won't eat a banana here anymore)
- stop wasting stuff
- stop pirating DVD and music
- support ONGs
- create values, by offering your help when needed
...

But again, this is all very personal, you can't be forced to believe in that, you have to be convinced, and only you can do it.

If you're feeling good the way you are, why changing? that would be against human nature.

I don"t feel good about the way I am/was behaving so I've changed.

So simple is that.

So now basically you're telling me that not only I'm disrespectful but also selfish?
Well read this:

I've never own a car, eventhough I own a driving license and I can actually drive.
I've recycle stuff all my life
I try to never waste a thing because I was taught to.
I was part of a couple ONGs in my young years
I've never downloaded anything on the Internet that wasn't free in the first place. The only few stuff that I've actually hacked or cracked was because they were too expensive for me.
I've eaten banana in Brasil and the West Indies and still eat them here in Europe because on there labels it says "Martinique" or "Senegal".
I buy local products and imported one but I try when possible to make sure those products are fairely traded.
I make sure to run fully loaded washing machine and not just for a couple underwear and socks. And so on...

I'm overweight and sometime I feel bad about myself when I look at me in the mirror. But I'm healthy (actually the last time I went to an hospital was because a car hit me). So no, I won't change. Because I love sitting at a good table and enjoy good wine and good food. I deserve it and shall never let anyone telling me that I am disrespectful and selfish because of that last thing I like to do.

Thanks for explaining the seveso site thing, I used to work in a company who sold personal protection equipment and some times had to deal with all those codes and regulations.

@Photogrin: you don't get it, you take personal, and you should not.
If you feel ok, the way you act, so where's the problem?

I'm telling, that I don't feel ok about things I was doing, and I'm now changing, this is my decision, my life, not yours, so really don't take it for you.

What I'm saying, is that human nature is to be selfish, it's normal. Living in society is a trade-off, you have to give away some of your freedowm to keep the rest.

Look, it's like the smoking stuff. 30 years ago, non-smoker have to give away their freedom of living in a space without somke, so that smoker can keep their freedom to have the pleasure to smoke.
Now it's the other way around.

Society changes, in a direction or another, what you can keep and what you have to give change as well, as the society evolves.

You don't drive fast, because you have to let the freedom of other people not to get kill because you want to have pleasure to drive fast.

Everything is a trade-off, you give, you take.

But at the end, most of the thing, you decide your own, some things are imposed by the state, but some other, you decide on your own.

It's really up to you to see what you're ready to give away and what you're not.

Once you're found your own balance, and this balance is ok for you and for the people around you, then you're fine.

So please don't take it against you, this is my stream, so I'm talking me, me and only me ;o)
No offense!

Atryu is right, green photogrin, and you proved it youreself :
You ended up costing money to society after getting hit by a car because you were to fat for the driver to get around you.
...
...
...
Am I the only one to laugh at my joke ?
...
...
Well, happens often, I don't take it personal.

By the way, green photogrin, we missed you at the party yesterday. Hope to see you soon.

About the discussion, I'm really sorry, I would love to join in, got a couple of ideas to say about the subject, besides of the stupids jokes, but I'm running out of time today.
Keep it interesting and respectful.
Knowing both of you personally, I know there is nothing bad or personal meant, and you got the smartness to keep it civile.
:)

@Philippe: don't worry we will keep it polite.

It's not my intention to chock people, but as this is my diary I tend to say prvate thing. People might not understand them, but I hope they won't get offended by what I say about myself.

With some colleagues, we're used to go climbing once a week.

It's really cool, to actually do some sport with people from work. I believe, well, actually I know, this is improving our teamwork a lot.

And by doing so, you're cleaning your body as well.

I should go more often...

06/01/2007 - Computer

Today, I've spent almost my full day reinstalling my computer.
Ok I've managed to get out shopping (sale period here in Belgium), but still, most of my day if not all my day were spent in front of that screen, saving all my data, hopping not to forgot something, and then reinstalling my windows partition.

Apparently, it's ok, and if I forgot something, it should not be a big thing, or I would already have seen it!

07/01/2007 - Sunday Bloody Sunday...

Here it is, 11am, and I've woke up.

Quite late you think?

I don't know, Sunday is normally the only day when I can afford not to put my alarm clock too early. I've put it to 11, just in case I don't wake up before that, well I guess it was a good idea, if not I would still be sleeping I guess ;o)

And it's a lovely day today, sun is foreseen and it's quite mild temperature, who says global warming?

edit: at least you can see I'm cheating with the picture's date "see the DIM" for "dimanche")

I envy your ability to sleep in. For the last two years I've been getting up at about 5:30am no matter the day.
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
@Italian Papillon: I've checked different times, and believe it or not, even if I4m not that far away from Paris, the sun gets up earlier here than it does in Paris, and you can actual notice it. I've checked it for sunset with friends, like the sun was already gone here, where you could still see it in Paris. Amazing!!

@Satrina*: yes I did and it felt goooooodddd

@Android9: to best honest, I was awake at 5h12 this morning, and I had some trouble to get back to sleep ;o). I normally sleep between 6 and 7 hours during the week. That the price to pay if you actually really want to do something of your day

Today was the dealine for the monthly activity report, well I guess I missed it, being too busy with other very important deadline.

By the way, did anyone ever encounter a not urgent deadline?

09/01/2007 - Annual Appraisal

09/01/2007 - Annual Appraisal

Today I've got my annual evaluation.

Like every year I'm the best, the company will fall down without me and blabla and blabla... I wish those annual meeting with your boss would be the occasion to hear a real critic, like this was good ,but this was bad you can do better, instead they just focus on what was good, so that you feel happy.

I don't care about feeling happy, I want to know how I performed. I still believe I can improve, but if I don't know where to improve, if everything is perfrect, why shall I try to improve things that are already perfect?

Human ressources managament can be very weak some times...

brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
Person-36 is the name of this form. Don't ask me why ;o)
satrina* 12 years ago
You should work where I worked 'till last year, every meeting was about the one mistake you made without even considering the 10-15 projects you delivered correctly

Oh, and if you didn't have a mistake then you where to blame for the ones your boss made :P

Satrina: av meg
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
@Satrina*: I don't really know what to answer you. I guess all companies are pretty much the same, some one way, some another, but still pretty much the same.

I believe the only way to get away with this is to set up your own business, but, that's not a sufficient reason to do so, you actually do need to have some sort of service to provide and sell, and so far I have none that someone could not do better (I've said "now")

Maybe one day, people (I mean HR) will realize that if most of the people needs to hear bullshit to stay happy, actually some needs the truth. And the thing, those last person, if they don't get the truth, they know it, and they work less good.
The problem with those person, is that, when they work less good, they still work pretty much as good as the first ones, so nobody notice.

As an HR it's sometimes hard to see when you are not motivating the right person the right way, but if for once you could do it, you will then see the difference....

10/01/2007 - splitting the brain in two

10/01/2007 - splitting the brain in two

Ok here is the deal: how to organise at the same time you first exhibit in Paris and finding a flat?

Too easy, split your screen in two and here you are.

You were really thinking that my brain was the limit and that I couldn't not work on two things at the same time!!

Ahah

You don't know me well enough ;o) (I hope)

brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
that's because I'm a "super"man.
satrina* 12 years ago
:D I also read about the men not being able to do two things at once, now I know it's not true

Oh, and about the evaluation thing, I know it's really better for everybody if those reports where speaking the truth, it's just that it's so weird for me to see a report like that one because where I used to work they believe that the way to motivate the employee to improve was saying: you absolutely suck! :P
brash deer [deleted] 12 years ago
@satrina*: if they tell you "you suck" but also tell you how to improve then it's fine for me. The problem here, is that they are trapped by themselves. How could they tell you "you're the best" and then "but you need to improve this and this and this". So they just tell you "you're the best", hopping that you're still gonna improve all the bad things they think about you but can't say.

Truth leads to improvement. You can't built a relationship on lies. Try that with your husband/wife and you'll know where this ends!

@sunshinecity: yes that's the magic of flickr@Paris. We do know each other, and yes Sabrina was kind enough to pose for me some month ago.
So Sabrina is not only a talented photographer, she also knows how to pose, as she demonstrate in all the pic taken from her, in my stream but also at every flickr meeting.

A lot of people from Paris actually know each other, because of (mostly) all the work from Philippe, that keep organise events to bring everybody out of his computer room to join altogether somewhere, so that we actually physically meet!

12/01/2007 - Genealogy

I guess this sum up pretty well my day, even though I've been working today, you know I can't much about that, so let's talk about what took most part of my evening.

I was sorting out some files, and reached again my genealogy folder. I have so much info here I haven't yet processed, like this picture of a wedding official paper from the XVIII century between two ancestors of mine.

Here you go for the translation:

The oldest document I have goes up to 1620, before that I have nothing.
I'm very lucky to have found so many documents that actually let me go more than 12 generations in time on different familly branches.

This is so captivating, but also time consuming. No wonder this is something most elderly do and not young people. I wish I can finish going up all the branches before not so long so that I can make a book for my closest familly members, with some maps, some facts (I have also some law suits papers, some personal mail...) and some history, a very long project, but a nice legacy I believe, even if our roots are not at all noble, afterall who cares ;o) I am proud of where I'm coming from, wherever it is.

I've spent much of the day between frame resellers and post services, but that's it!! I've got all my material ready, the pictures are within their frame (I've hidden them so that you come and see them at the vernissage ;o)
The one on the left is so far the biggest size I've ever printed (50*75cm) and is for the next exhibit in May (I'll tell you more after the one in January).
The one on the right is the flyer, so that one you've already knew ;o)

As I said 2007 will be a huge back to the roots for me.

Ok maybe this time I went too far away going back to college, playing some good metallica songs on my very old bass guitar.
The feeling hasn't changed, still as good, but my talents hasn't improved a bit, damn if only talent would be like some good french wine.

Anyway a quiet sunday (but the music might not please my neighboors ;o)
