I was packing a box of souvenirs from New York for my children. For those who don't know it, they live with their father in France. I tell other people (and myself) that right now I have the gift of freedom. When the kids were babies and small children, I felt like a single mother within the confines of my marriage.

"Freedom" is not just another word for nothing left to lose*. Sometimes freedom is bittersweet. I miss my beautiful children.

*Apologies to Janis Joplin, I mean, Kris Kristofferson.

There is one thing to add to the prescription : a smile once in a while during the day. While looking out the window, while watching a picture of your kids, while reading those lines, while in the shower or under the sheets in your bed...
Helps a lot to feel better.

Dinner

January 5, 2007

Not that this describes my day or anything. This could represent any day of the week, because Allan and I will inevitably say, at some point during the afternoon, "What do you want for dinner?" Today was no exception, and we talked about cooking some ground lamb (we have some in the freezer) in some Trader Joe's simmer sauce. A little bit ago, as we were walking around the neighborhood, Allan said "We could go to Kroger and get some fresh ground lamb, or some salmon, or something." We were walking past Tomo, a local sushi bar and restaurant, so I replied "Sushi."

And we got sushi. Maybe we'll cook the ground lamb for dinner tomorrow night.

Edit: I blogged this, too.
francophony 12 years ago
Oh god, sushi.

I think I could eat sushi three times a week and never get sick of it. Alas, instead I get sushi like once every two months. I really need to remedy this situation. Especially since its far cheaper here than in the states, so I should surely be taking advantage of this situation. Mmmmm.

So jealous.

(They do that weird fake grass deco at my local restaurant too, which always seems sort of weird. I mean, fish don't generally romp around in the grass. Why not some sort of blue water deco or something?)

AliThinks 12 years ago

yum! I could eat it every day of the week but I'm tryin' to cut down because of the fish shortage.

Lucky, my husband is doing the same thing.

Weirdly enough, I don't like cooked fish, because it tastes too fishy. Except those square, breaded, frozen fish, I can eat those, but I don't really like to. So I only eat sushi. Very rarely. But I hope the fish stick around a really long time, because they make yummy sushi!

Couch Potato

January 6, 2007

Aside from a 2-mile walk earlier today, and a brief walk this evening, I've spent just about the entire day on the couch with my laptop. The Daily Photo Diary Group has me riveted, and I had a bunch of blogs to catch up on, and...ooops, you can see the remote shutter release in my hand here.

At least I got a little fresh air and exercise today.

If you want to know about the gay politician
If you want to know how to drive your car
If you want to know about the new sex position
You can read it in the Sunday papers, read it in the Sunday papers

We only get the paper on the weekend. Every Sunday morning I get excited to see the paper, but inevitably I don't read the whole thing.

Can you say "short attention span"?

It's not even the New York Times. It's the Lexington Herald-Leader, whose thickness depends only on the number of ads. Meh. Quality over quantity, no?

For more about what happened today, check out Allan's killer photo and commentary.

___________________________________

Yep. It's good to get the news from the Internets!

My Julien and I had no antenna on our TV, so we got news from the Internet, as well as from the "local" newspaper, Sud-Ouest. Sometimes Julien bought the Canard Enchainé, but that's more opinion and satire than news. And occasionally we'd buy one of the hebdomadaires. Oh yeah, and I subscribed to TIME for a few years. And when I could get it, I'd read the IHT. Hope that helps!

Not much commentary tonight. My head is killing me and all I want to do is go to bed. I will say that I took this underneath a railroad bridge. None of my photos of the bridge were what I hoped for, and I am too tired to tweak them. So here I am. No, my legs do not go up to my neck in real life.

Oh yeah, one more thing: even people in rural Kentucky tag stuff.

There is something comforting about the Big Orange Book™. It sates my need for grammatical and punctuational order. That probably sounds masochistic. It's not. I love language.

My brother asked me to do some proofreading and editing on his doctoral thesis, and we're at the last bit: the bibliography.

This is the part I have been dreading. It's going to require lots of concentration, something which is in short supply at the moment chez Alison.

____________________________________________

shoot Ali this is the perfect time, then, to ask you that grammar question I had the other day and now I can't remember!! It had something to do with subject-verb agreement when there's more than one subject ... like when you have a sentence with one pronoun and a parenthetical fragment with another --which should the verb agree with? I hope you know what I'm talking about because I can't find my example at the moment. It comes up every now and then and because I don't know which pronoun the verb should be conjugated for I usually just find a way to reword the whole thing but I'd really like to know if you can tell me!
sunshinecity 12 years ago
... your graffiti with shadow pic is stunning! Such great light!

As for the thesis corrections... ugh, don't remind me!! I think that is my one lifetime masterpiece!! I don't have kids yet, but somehow I'm doubting I will ever do anything so wonderful again!
The bibliography is THE most boring part. You'd think it's easy, yet there are so many stupid rules on how to classify books, by which category, author etc... so many different opinions, so many different ways to list.
I had to put up post-it notes all over my back wall behind my desk in order to remember certain things!

This is where I spent most of the day. It wasn't until almost three o'clock that I started to feel anywhere close to human. After I left the bed, ate, showered, and dressed, I took up residence on the couch.

If you have seen Allan's photo and commentary for the day, you'll understand. This is the worst hangover I have had in ages. I've come to two conclusions:

1) I did not feel a bit tipsy. So I kept sucking down beers.

2) I'm way too old to be sucking down beers without thought of consequences.

But we had a great evening. We played Scrabble; a few strategically placed high-point letters, and I beat Allan. We took lots of photos of the cat -- well, at least I did. Speaking of, look who's all snug in the sheets!

_________________________________________

Three of these boxes were delivered today. That fourth one? The one on the bottom with bubble wrap sticking out of it? Yeah, it's this one.

Went back to read your comment from the 2nd. I lived a few years far from one of my kid and I understand exactly what you feel.
It is so important to keep the link very alive and it is great you take care of posting all the birthday boxes.

Ooops, it is marked for friends and family only. I will change it. Thanks for the heads-up. Ça devrait marcher maintenant.

Thank you, Didier.

You can't see it, but I can feel it. There is an incredible amount of tension in my neck, especially on this side. It hurts. A lot.

It's time to get a proper massage, I think.

There is more, but I just can't write about it now.

You and my husband alike... hope it works itself out. Take it easy.

Maybe a root beer will make it better? :)

Yes, Massages (and muscle relaxants and pain medicine). It's the stuff to ease all the tension out. Plus a hot soak and some good sleep.

Wow, your Jan 10th photo is really wonderful.

And, this might not be quite the place for it, but love your grammatical note in your profile. That drives me nuts too!

Maybe it will. I haven't had root beer in ages.

That's exactly what I need. Unfortunately, sleep eludes me at the moment...

Thanks! :-)

Let me guess. That is where you are now!
