OK, so we have a July meet-up planned...I've heard from four folks that are definitly going, I'd like to get the group rate so I'm hoping this posting gets some other folks thinking about it. The group rate not only cuts the costs in half but we get a private tour that sounds really useful (taken from the web site):
Guided Quick-Glance Tour
This 30-minute highlights tour is perfect for groups primarily coming to Eastern State to sketch or photograph the building or for groups with limited time. On days when the penitentiary is open to the public, following the Quick-Glance Tour, the group is welcome to remain on site at no additional charge to photograph, sketch or view the artist installations and history exhibits until the site closes at 5:00 pm Limited to groups of 15 to 125. 30 minutes.

The full cost to get in is 12.00 per person (go to the web site to get a dollar off coupon www.easternstate.org). The group cost is 7.50. Please note that there is a 10.00 tripod fee, good for the entire season (5.00 for groups of 15). ESP has some rules of photography posted here: www.easternstate.org/visit/options.php

It's open from 10-5... anytime during the day is good with me and I don't think the light will be better at certain times of the day but I could be wrong. I'm hoping someone that's been there will post thier thougths about timing.

Afterwards, if we still have time we could head over to Laurel Hill Cemetery but someone else will have to lead that part as I've never been there.

So let me know you are coming as groups have to reserve one week in advance.

Hi All,
I invited folks from my camera club - Chester County Camera Club and now we have a group and the group rate. I will call tomorrow and arrange everything and then ask them about the best time to come but I'm thinking we get the tour around noon and could then work on details or close-ups till the the light gets nice. Shoot till we're all out of memory ;-} and then we find some place to have dinner...
sssmithphoto 10 years ago
Sounds good. Do you need an exact number ahead of time? I know a few people who want to go but have not given me a definite answer yet.
protective impulse [deleted] 10 years ago
Pat, just to make it official by posting here; but as you know my "clan" will be attending. So my head count is four....Joe

Hi All,
Check out this guys photos of ESP www.oboylephoto.com/esp/index.htm Wow, I can't wait!!
pshorten PRO 10 years ago
Hi All,
I just got off the phone with the folks at ESP. We will be having a private group tour that starts at 1pm. Please meet me by the front door around 12:30, that way we can all go in, pay our fees, get our tripod passes and be ready to tour right on time. We have until 5pm to photograph and afterward I was thinking perhaps we could do dinner...and for those that want to we would go on for sunset over Laurel Hill Cemetary.

The costs will be an entrance fee of 7.50 (seniors 6.50 and students 7.00) and a 5.00 tripod fee. Because there are more than 15 of us going we get one free pass, I am giving this to Jojoburke as he is bringing several folks with him (1/5 of the entire group), only seems fair!

If anyone is going to be late, please let me know as the entry fee is based on 15 being there all at once...

I'm going to do my best to come on Saturday. Would love to meet everyone. I'll post for sure right before hand.
magazione 10 years ago
I think I can make it. 12 saturday at ESP...right?
sssmithphoto 10 years ago
I think a friend of mine from work is coming and bringing 3 other people.
pshorten PRO 10 years ago
bardgabbard - Great see you at the front door at 12:30.

Magazione - I had you on the list with a question mark - will remove that mark and look forward to seeing you Saturday!

SSSmightphoto - good job, tell them to look for all the folks with cameras!

Everyone, if you come late just let ESP folks know you are with me (Pat Shorten) and the Flickr group/Chester County Camera Club...I think after we all arrive it will be very clear to them. I think we are close to 25 brave souls at this point!

Would love to attend, been there before w/o the camera. Have to see what my schedule is like, supposed to be spoiling the grandaughter sometime on saturday. I will check and get back to you guys. Maybe she can come too. At 3 y/o she prolly won't get much outta it. : (

Grrrrrrrrr, just checked the website, children under 7 cannot be admitted. After being there a few times that is a pretty good policy.

I'm definately in now, barring any unforseen circumstances in the next 24 hours. Don't think my schedule will permit sticking around for Laurel Hill or dinner though:)

Sorry to post 7 pics from yesterday to the group, it was hard enough deciding on these 7 to upload to flickr let alone trying to only select a couple for the group ;)

It was good seeing people again. Hopefully we can get together again.
protective impulse [deleted] 10 years ago
All good shots Jim. I am sure we will see many more photos posted with such a good turn out as we had for the event. It was a pleasure seeing some faces I know as well as finally putting a face with a (Flickr) name and meeting new people.
Pat: Thanks for all your efforts in bringing this together. You deserve a round of applause. I look forward to doing this again soon.

I was just wondering about this place... if they closed down in 1971 then we were looking at about 36 years of decay...unless it was already in the process of decay in the 60's. The other thing I forgot to ask about was where did the prisoners shower? Was there a shower room that was not on the tour?
nostalgic box [deleted] 10 years ago
Each cell block at the end had a shower cell. I did get a picture of one, but didn't upload, it wasn't that interesting, just some tile and piping hookups.

magazione - you intrigued me with your comment about 36 years of decay. According to the ESP website (www.easternstate.org/history/):

1970 January

Eastern State Penitentiary closes.
Most inmates are sent to the State Correctional Institution at Graterford. While the Penitentiary's electrical and mechancial systems are in terrible shape, its walls and paint are in perfect condition.

1971 to mid-1980s

Eastern State is all but totally abandoned. Philadelphia Streets Department uses grounds for storage. Vandals smash skylights and windows. An urban forest grows in the halls and cells.

1991

With generous funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts, stabilization and preservation efforts begin.

Looking at the photos already posted, looks like you all had a good time. Sorry I wasn't able to join you. I'd still like to meet up again with the group at a future meet though, see some old faces and also the new ones that have joined the group since my last outing.
magazione 10 years ago
interesting... was that lead paint??
pshorten PRO 10 years ago
I enjoyed the entire thing - loved the artist installations that were there and the decay that was pretty much everywhere. Really a neat place to have preserved for us to tour and photograph. Glad so many of us could make it....fun to put faces to names and then get "real" names.

Jim, I'm with you, my first go through my photos I had dozens of favorites. I'm thinking I will end up posting about 12 which is a bit high but there was so much camera fodder!!

What are we doing next month? August is just around the corner!
Timothy Keith 9 years ago
Darn it! This makes the second time I can't join in one of these. Hopefully the August event I can attend.
