Group DescriptionThe Wrekin Mountaineering Club is a Shropshire based club that has existed for over 25 years and as such, has accumulated a number of photographs of many members, past and present. wrekinmc.co.uk/index.html
In the early 1980s a few like-minded outdoor enthusiasts formed the Wenlock Olympian Society Mountaineering Club (WOSMC) and on the 7th October 1986 the club decided to change its name to encourage new members from the developing new town of Telford. Thus, the Wrekin Mountaineering Club (WMC) was formed. However, soon after the new club was formed tragedy struck when our chairman and most experienced mountaineer Emrys Jones was killed in a climbing accident in the Llanberris Pass on the 24th of January 1988.
Despite this sad loss the club continued to grow with experienced members actively encouraging new members to develop their mountaineering skills and enjoy the great outdoors from walking and climbing around Shropshire to scaling higher peaks all over Europe. But, those that went before were never forgotten and when I first joined the club every year around the 24th of January we held a memorial meet and scrambled across Clogwyn Y Person to celebrate Emrys Jones life and his love of places wild and exciting.
