Post here details of any exhibitions that you think might be of interest to the group members. If possible give details of who is featured, where it is, dates of exhibition, website links, etc..
If you visit a show or exhibition; then perhaps give us a brief review.
As dates of events become obsolete, posts will be deleted.
Best wishes

Another plug for the "McCullin" film, which I've now seen.
Best thing I've seen for a very, very long time, not just for the photography, but the production is impeccable. It also gives a chilling overview of war ove the last 40 years or so and documents the demise of the British free press.
Don McCullin himself comes over as a thoughtful, compassionate man of great integrity.
Unfortunately I can't find any details of national showings, other than Sheffield until Thursday 17th Jan at the Showroom.

Please go and see it if you can.

Following on from Eleri Norris's (Lerpix) post, the McCullin film
This title will be released on DVD February 25, 2013.
I managed to get to see this wonderful insightful, sensitive and moving documentary last week on the "big screen". So thought provoking.

This is a plug for a brilliant film I saw yesterday evening called Chasing Ice. A documentary about the incredible work of photographer and environmentalist James Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey project which has documented the thinning and retreat of many glaciers. The photographic evidence he has captured of the very real effect of climate change brings it home more than any statistics.
Stunning on so many levels.

Two years after his death, tribute to the work of Liverpool-born photojournalist Tim Hetherington (1970 – 2011) in an exhibition of photography and film work. The show is presented in collaboration with the Tim Hetherington Trust and Magnum Photos.

Drawing from the series of images published in his acclaimed book Infidel (Chris Boot Ltd, London 2010), which offers an intimate insight into the lives of American soldiers in conflict but beyond the action of war, almost 30 of Hetherington’s genre-defying photographs will be reproduced in varying scale, including a number of billboard formats.

You can read more about it on the Guardian Weekend Magazine (27 July issue) or by visiting The Guardian online.

Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer
8 October – 15 December
Hayward Gallery Upper Level
Southbank Centre
Belvedere Road
London
SE1 8XX

www.southbankcentre.co.uk/venues/hayward-gallery/exhibitions

Internationally-acclaimed photographer Dayanita Singh breaks away from the print-on-the-wall tradition in a major new body of work, presented for the first time at Hayward Gallery. In a further advance on her experimental bookmaking, in which photography becomes a starting point rather than an end in itself, Go Away Closer presents Singh’s new portable ‘museums’ of stories, themes and image-repertoires, alongside her most well-known series of works, such as Dream Villa, Blue Book, I am as I am, Bombay Portraits and the Mona portfolio.

RISK
SAT 5 OCT - SAT 11 JAN
The Lauriston Gallery
Waterside Arts Centre,
1 Waterside Plaza,
Sale,
M33 7ZF

Risk is developed through a series of workshops for visual artists led by Mario Popham and Rebecca Dixon on behalf of CIT.

The exhibition features work by a new collective of emerging photograhers and comments on the contemporary position of photography in our world. By combining the work of five photographers and visual artists, this exhibition explores the theme of risk through a rapidly evolving medium, which is possibly entering one of its most controversial periods yet due to the persistent blurring of technical and conceptual boundaries.

Be it personal, financial, political or artistic, risk is an abstract concept that we find ourselves assessing, pre-empting and attempting to avoid on a daily basis. Risk brings together the works of Sandra Bouguerch, Roy Kenniston, Sarah Faraday and Alan Whitfield to capture, through individual interpretations, what risk could mean to the photographer.

15 January 2014 - 23 March 2014

Whitechapel Gallery
77-82 Whitechapel High Street
London E1 7QX

www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/hannah-hch

Hannah Höch was an artistic and cultural pioneer. A member of Berlin’s Dada movement in the 1920s, she was a driving force in the development of 20th century collage. Splicing together images taken from fashion magazines and illustrated journals, she created a humorous and moving commentary on society during a time of tremendous social change. Höch was admired by contemporaries such as George Grosz, Theo van Doesburg and Kurt Schwitters, yet was often overlooked by traditional art history. As the first major exhibition of her work in Britain, the show puts this inspiring figure in the spotlight.

Bringing together over 100 works from major international collections, the exhibition examines Höch’s extraordinary career from the 1910s to the 1970s. Starting with early works influenced by her time working in the fashion industry, it includes key photomontages such as High Finance (1923) which critiques the relationship between bankers and the army at the height of the economic crisis in Europe.

The exhibition runs from 22 March to 10 May 2014.

Paul Reas is one of the most significant photographers to emerge from the new wave of British colour documentary of the mid-1980s. The exhibition spans thirty years from Thatcherite Britain to today’s recession, and encompasses themes of class, consumption, work and leisure.

Paul Reas is part of the pioneering generation of photographers who revealed and critiqued British class and culture in the 1980s and 90s. Strongly influenced by his working class upbringing in Bradford, Reas used humour and sharp observation to comment on a new corporate and commercial world epitomised by heritage industry sites, retail parks, and supermarkets.

Constructing Worlds: Photography and Architecture in the Modern Age
25 September 2014 - 11 January 2015

Barbican Centre
Silk Street London
EC2Y 8DS

Constructing Worlds brings together seventeen exceptional photographers from the 1930s to the present day, who have changed the way we view architecture and think about the world we live in, including: Berenice Abbott, Iwan Baan, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Hélène Binet, Walker Evans, Luigi Ghirri, Andreas Gursky, Lucien Hervé, Nadav Kander, Luisa Lambri, Simon Norfolk, Bas Princen, Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore, Julius Shulman, Thomas Struth, and Guy Tillim.

This global exploration of 20th and 21st century architecture begins with the birth of the skyscraper in New York City, seguing through the beginnings of modern America, post-colonial Africa and India; industrialised 1960s Europe; the increasing suburbanisation of the First World and the frenetic urbanisation of the new economic powers of Asia, the Middle East and South America.

The exhibition features over 250 works, many shown in the UK for the first time, which not only document the built world, but delve deeper into the wider truths about society that are revealed through architecture.

Now You See It - Photography and Concealment
March 31–September 1, 2014

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 Fifth Avenue
New York, New York 10028-0198

www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2014/now-you-see-i...

Photography is a medium prized for its capacity to expose, lay bare, make visible. For many artists, the camera is, above all, a tool for revealing what would otherwise remain unnoticed. As Diane Arbus once said: "I really believe there are things which nobody would see unless I photographed them." At the root of this artistic impulse is a keen fascination with that which is hidden, obscure, or hitherto unseen. This exhibition presents a selection of contemporary photographs and video from the permanent collection that variously explores the medium's dynamic interplay between concealment and revelation.

Some of the artists featured here use the camera to reveal subjects or places ordinarily hidden, as in Vera Lutter's majestic view of the interior of a Pepsi-Cola bottling plant or Miguel Rio Branco's lush image of a tapestry's seamy underside. Others address instances of geopolitical obfuscation: Fazal Sheikh's aerial photographs of the Negev desert in southern Israel record the traces of Bedouin villages that have been transformed into forests or farmland, while Mishka Henner collects images of stylishly censored high-security sites on Google Earth. In Vault (2011), Thomas Demand takes his inspiration from current events, meticulously re-creating a storeroom in which thirty missing works of art were discovered during a recent police raid.

The tension between publicity and privacy—the simultaneous desire to be looked at and to evade the merciless gaze of the camera—animates the work of artists as diverse as Arbus, Lutz Bacher, Jack Pierson, and Taryn Simon. In her video, The Nightingale (2003), Grace Ndiritu explores the tradition of the veil and its complex poetics of exposure and effacement. Complementing the contemporary works on view is a selection of earlier photographs in which the primary subject is hidden or obscured—a brief anthology of playfulness, shame, and seduction.

For London Folk, just saw a link for free beer at Bob Mazzer’s UNDERGROUND book launch of 70s/80s Tube photography at Shoreditch, 6 p.m. on 12th June. Details here. spitalfieldslife.com/2014/06/01/come-to-bob-mazzers-under...

“For a while in the eighties, I lived with my father in Manor House and worked as a projectionist at a porn cinema in Kings Cross. It was called The Office Cinema, so guys could call their wives and say, ‘I’m still at the office.’” recalled Bob affectionately, “Every day, I travelled to Kings Cross and back. Coming home late at night, it was like a party and I felt the tube was mine and I was there to take pictures.”

I think I'll go see.
