Hi Kitty

GREAT to have a low pressure challenge, an excellent way of resolving the 52 week concept!
I've just finished a strict time-based 52 week challenge and wasn't thinking of doing another, but your approach has tempted me ..

My only question: the two pix that can be posted per week: can they be each for a different theme? e.g rather than posting 2 x 'time' pix, to post 1 x 'time' pic and 1 x 'daisy' pic ... ?

Thanks for the invite

Hi Ang, welcome aboard! I had a look around and couldn't find any 52 week group like this, so thought I'd have a go and see if people liked it.

Yes, the two images a week are for different subjects - only one image per subject, per person is 'allowed'; so a maximum of two subjects can be completed each week. If someone did two a week every week, they'd be finished by July - assuming they could find something appropriate for a subject such as 'Halloween'!
pikespice PRO 5 years ago
I did a Halloween picture in '13 back in Febrary. =)

I like the idea! Since most of these topics were done in past scavenger hunts, this gives me a chance to do something new for them.

Hi David. I'm glad you're going to join in! Yes, the subjects have been used before - they are very 'basic' subjects because I wanted people to be able to interpret them in any number of ways. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Kitty W:

Great! thanks for the clarification there Kitty, that makes it even less pressure - which is tremendous! As instead of having to post weekly, having the allowance of two posts per week gives a chance to catch up on things missed! Brilliant planning by you :)

Happy New Year :)

Low pressure was what I was intending, Ang. I wanted the onus to be on a friendly group who were doing a 'background' challenge together. We're already close to 30 members, which is great. I just couldn't' take on the 114 challenge at this moment in time, but I think I can manage 52, with two a week here, and one a week most weeks. As you say, if you have to miss some, it should be fairly easy to catch up.

Can't wait to start. I have tried last year in a 113 group and couldn't do it.
52 I can do. And probably finish early too.

Welcome aboard. I didn't manage a bigger challenge last year either. Hopefully, we will manage the 52. :D

Thank you the group Kitty W, nice to have a realistic timeline and no pressure. Am looking forward to having a 'go'. Oh, and a Happy New Year to you all, and hopefully a happy new group.

I did a 365 flowers a day challenge last year - it was fun and no pressure for me as I usually add a photo or two each day. Do the photos that we add have to be taken that week or can we choose photos that suit the theme from our archives?

flowrwolf:

Welcome aboard - Good luck, I look forward to seeing how you do. Happy New Year to you too.

crafty1tutu (Ann):

The photos have to be taken this year, but in any order you like, with a maximum of two uploads to the group per week. So the earliest anyone can finish at two a week would be mid-year. I plan to take a lot longer than that. The pace is deliberately 'slow'. If you want to take part in a bigger challenge than this, there is a great group here: 114 pictures in 2014 And if challenges are your 'thing' you could always do both!
crafty1tutu (Ann) PRO 5 years ago
Thanks for that. I will probably aim to add one a week. I will look into the other group too.
a100tim 5 years ago
Kitty, are their any tag requirements??
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
a100tim:

HI Tim. I will tag mine '52 in 2014' but it's not a 'rule'. I think the main thing is that each image has a few words under it so anyone looking in the group pool can see which subject it 'fits', and that the image is posted in the appropriate thread. Does that sound ok?
Jeff* PRO 5 years ago
Hello and thanks for having me! I am currently traveling but shooting so I hope to post one of the topics this weekend. I sometimes use film photography and scan the prints, which means there is no "Exif" info to see about the particulars for the image. I know some much stricter groups want to verify a photo was taken within a certain time span by checking the Exif data but this group sounds like it takes a low key approach to trust that the photographer is on his/her honor when they say they are posting a new photo. Which I like. :)

As a matter of fact, I may still be posting some instant print photos I took the last week of 2013 to my photo stream but obviously will not be using them for this group.

Thanks again.

Hi Jeff. You thought right - none of that strict malarkey here! I look forward to seeing your shots. Welcome to the group, & have a great time travelling.

Does the week run from Wednesday to Tuesday?
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
sasastro:

Hi Sas. Originally, I thought it would run from weekend to weekend, but I think Flickr has an inbuilt mechanism which means it won't allow any of us to post more than two shots within any 7 day period. So each week has no specific beginning or end. Does that make sense?

Hi Kitty, for me a large part of the fun of a group like this is seeing how other members interpret the themes.

I've noticed that quite a lot of members are posting in the group without saying which topic their photo is for. Is it possible for them to be reminded?
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
Katie-Rose:

Hi Katie, I have been going in and asking people to do just that, where I see an image with no obvious link to the group pool. I am aware of the issue, but there's nothing more I can do than that.

Kitty, I've been having the same problem. Perhaps we should add something in bold to the front page under the title 'NEWS' like:
"Please remember to include the number and title of the topic to which you are adding your photo."
What do you think?
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
judy4652:

Good idea Judy. I'll try to do it now. Thanks. x

Can someone remind me how to post a thumbnail in the categories please?

sasastro:

Hi Sas. Go to your own page of the image you want to post. Then click on the icon third from the right at the base of the black strip at the top of the page (it looks like an arrow coming out of a box). Choose the third option offered - Grab the HTML/BBCode - and make sure 'HTML' is checked at the bottom of the box (the centre one of the three dots). Then choose the size 'Small' from the drop down menu, and simply copy the code offered - paste it in the reply box at the bottom of the relevant discussion thread.

Let me know if I haven't explained it very well. x
sasastro 5 years ago
No, that's perfectly clear. Thanks Kitty
tmattioni PRO 5 years ago
Yesterday I was able to post my photo to the thread but today I am lost.....my own page is all black, no strip- the new one. When I choose the arrow/in box (2nd from the right) I only get options to share on FB, twitter, etc, and no grab the HTML code.....can't find it!
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
tmattioni:

Hi. Those options are at the top of the 'box' - next to 'Share this via ...' You need to look to the bottom of that box to see if you have a 'grab the HTML/BB Code' option (it will be in blue).

If the worst comes to the worst, I can post it for you, as that option is available to me on your image. Is this the one you mean?

Yes, please post it for me, and I will work on figuring this out for the next photo. I had no trouble with the first one, so I know what to look for, but nothing in your descriptions appears on my page....
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
tmattioni:

I have just sent you a Flickrmail which contains the code for you to post. If I go to your stream now, I too cannot see the 'Grab the HTML/BB Code' option. I hope you manage to get it sorted out.

judy4652 PRO 5 years ago
Terri I don't know what is happening - if I look at your stream I can find it straight away, using the method I mailed you, so I'm just intrigued now!
admin
Kitty W PRO 5 years ago
I can see the code again now! How weird is that? The only other thing I can think of is that the image is somehow tagged as over 18, or not 'safe'.
tmattioni PRO 5 years ago
No idea what is happening - nothing that is described to me matches what I see on my page. Thanks Judy and Kitty - I have contacted Flickr and if I don't hear from them by Sunday night, which is my next free time space, I will try to cancel out on the new beta format and see what I can do with the previous ....
tmattioni PRO 5 years ago
Judy and Kitty - I opted out of the new beta format, and was able to post my image with no problem!!!

Excellent news. Hopefully it's another indicator to Flickr that the new format isn't the way forward!
admin
judy4652 PRO 5 years ago
Terri, that is really weird because when I was looking at your stream and photo it was in the old format not Beta, so you had a completely different layout in front of you!!!! Anyway, so glad you got it sorted and can now partake with other photos!
I cannot post images into a discussion on Flickr, it is very tempremental and time consuming. I don't have this problem on ipernity btw!
admin
judy4652 PRO 5 years ago
Robert, are you on the new Beta format? It would seem that only people on Beta are having problems, so if you can opt out and go back to the old format then you will probably have no problems. Worth a try!

Robert Wilson (also ipernity.com/home/298661):

Thanks for letting us know, Robert. I can only suggest what Judy has already said (or double check that the image(s) concerned aren't accidentally marked as 'unsafe' (ie over 18's) as Flickr will stop you posting those.
judy4652:

I managed to get the most recent two into the discussion topics but it is still temperamental. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have an iMac with the 'magic mouse' btw.

Sorry Robert, just noticed your latest comment. I'm sorry I can't help you with that as I don't have a Mac so don't know anything about these items. Glad you have been able to get your two posted, so hopefully it will be OK now.

Hi Judy, Kitty - I've noticed that a few photos in the challenge have achieved explore status and was wondering whether we should have a folder especially for those photos as well?

Hi Dick. Nice idea. Is there an app that will tell us which pictures have done that? It's late now, but I'll look back in tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion, and congratulations to everyone who has achieved Explore with shots for this challenge.
admin
judy4652 PRO 4 years ago
Hi Dick, I agree, very good idea.

Kitty, I think the easiest thing for everyone concerned would be to put up a new Discussion Topic "Explored? - If a photo you have used for our Challenge has reached Explore, please place a SMALL version here. NO TEXT COMMENT HERE, PLEASE!

Then members can place their own photo there, and other members can comment directly onto the photograph (but not in the topic or we will end up with a mountain of text and it will take for ages to load each time, especially for people on low internet speeds!).

When it comes round to technology, we are not the best of bed-fellows and when it comes around to computers we are total strangers.

Might sound like a daft question to some, but how do you put your pictures in a reply on the discussion treads?
admin
Kitty W PRO 4 years ago
beedylittleeyephotography:

Hi. Not a silly question at all, especially with all the changes Flickr have made in recent times. You need to go to your own page. Click on the image, and scroll down a little to look at the right hand (black) side bar. In a row of icons there is one that looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. Click on that. You need to make sure the little circle next to HTML is checked (NOT the 'embed' circle). Then choose 'Small' as the size form the drop down menu above the white code. After that, simply copy that code, and paste it into the 'Reply to this topic' box in the relevant discussion thread (just as you did to ask your question here). Press 'Post Now' and your image should magically appear in the thread.

I hope that's clear enough. If it's not, please do get back to us.

While I understand and agree with a limit of 2 photos per week for the first six months of the year - now that there's only 10 weeks left in 2014 I was wondering if the Administrators might consider easing up on that rule.

By the way, I'm in the process of cleaning up my Album and re-checking what's been done and what's left - and I see that the Admin has done some corrections for me. As an Admin and Moderator for other groups I really appreciate the time and effort required in doing this. You're doing an awesome job keeping things running smoothly. A big thanks.

Hi there. I hadn't really thought about it, but I guess that's quite a good idea for those who have slipped behind a little with their posting for the group. I will contact the other admins to check out their views, but from where I stand, it's something that could be quite helpful. Thanks for the suggestion.

treehuggerdcg:

Dianne, I have messaged you privately on this matter. But for other members, the result of consulting the other admins, is that we think it best to leave the two pictures-per week rule intact. Some people might feel it would be unfair on other group members to 'move the goalposts' at this point in the year.
general stew [deleted] 4 years ago
I can understand your decision but am a bit sad about it, because it means that I can't finish the challenge now! I've really fallen behind this year with posting photos to flickr and to the challenge groups. - Never mind, I'll just have to try harder next year!

Cath in Dorset:

Hi Cath. I'm going to leave the group open so people can finish the challenge, even if it does creep into 2015. I think getting the shots is what matters, not the 'rules' about posting within the year. So take your time, and finish it at your leisure if you want to. I am going to turn my 52 shots into a photo book, so I have something to 'show' for my efforts. :)
general stew [deleted] 4 years ago
OK, thanks, that's encouraging and I'll keep going! Are you thinking of doing a "52 in 2015" as well?

Yes, please do keep going! I don't know about 52 in 2015. Personally, I am going to do a 365 pictorial diary next year, so doubt I'd have time for the 52 in 2015 as well, but am willing to help out with the setting up of and running of such a group if there are enough people who want to take part (and are willing to be a fellow admin!)
