Group DescriptionIn the days before and just after the mid-70's, EMS was basically First Aid Squads. Many were just fire departments running a rescue type truck/van to people who were injured. The medical care was your basic Red Cross Standard First Aid and rapid transport. The first ambulances were converted hearses, but some were made by Cadillac and had 440hp engines and drove like, well, a Cadillac! As shows like EMERGENCY! came on air to introduce this advanced level of care and the nation slowly began it's progression to Emergency Medical Service, the rigs evolved also. From converted hearses to Cadillacs, to vans, to modular "box" type III, from companies like Wolf Coach and Swab. This group is for photos of anything from that era, the first aid squad units, the Cadillac ambulances, the converted hearses. Basically anything from "Old School" pre-modern EMS apparatus.
