Group Description

This group is for any USA and Canadian LTL trucking company that either went out of business or has been bought out by another company to be re-branded and eliminated.

Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry. Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share. Most of the companies BELOW were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers. The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers which will make for a dismal future of making any kind of "big money" in the LTL business. I Mike Boyd (Fotoriff) have done the research..

A long sad list follows after the photos in this description added by Mike has seen most of these companies unravel into what it is today. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I'VE MISSED ANY COMPANIES. I didn't want to leave anyone out.

G.I. Trucking Company: Example - LIMITED Estes Express Lines tractors with a G.I. Trucking trailer would be okay, but I think we met the quota. An Estes photo group is also available for any additional Estes photos. Thanks!

-G.I. Trucking Company (Acquired by Estes Express Lines)
GI Trucking Company International Eagle

-Watkins Motor Lines Inc. (Acquired by FedEx Corp.)
WATKINS MOTOR LINES TRUCK - 1990s

-Jevic Transportation Inc. discontinuing operations. The current high fuel costs,
economic downturn, increasing insurance costs, and tightening credit markets have made their decision necessary.
Jevic stopped providing pickup service effective Monday 5/19/08. However, they continued operating to deliver all freight within their system prior to closing. In other words, they stopped while they were ahead.

Jevic Pups
(JVC107)

-American Freightways (Acquired by FedEx Corp.)
fedex_af1

-Roadway Express (Merged with Yellow Transportation)
ROADWAY TRUCKING - WHITE CABOVER

-USF Dugan, (Acquired by Yellow Roadway Corp.)
-USF Red Star - May 25, 2004 on a Sunday USF Corp. announced its closure of USF Red Star, an LTL (less than truckload) company operating in the North East.
USF Dugan(3) 2-1-05 Indianapolis,In

-Truckload carriers that are certain to be gone would be okay in this group. Not too many truckload carriers go out of business, they usually start up after an LTL company goes away.
-FedEx National LTL is one of the latest to be eliminated. It's all a part of FedEx Freight now.
-Tractor, trailers and sign photos will be fine as long as their former LTL companies that are no longer in business. Don't hesitate to ask if not sure. Thanks Again!

LTL TRUCKING COMPANY BANKRUPTCIES & SHUTDOWNS
2010s SO FAR....
Brandt Truck Lines Bloomington, IL. March 22nd 2011.
NYCE or New York Carolina Express Greensboro, NC. has now closed their doors on Nov. 2nd 2012. making this company the latest in another LTL company gone forever.

Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry. Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share. Most of the companies ABOVE were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers. The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers.

Hopefully, with some accuracy, this could be a great "go to" photo pool for "Less Than Truckload" trucking history.
More to come to this group as the trucking industry keeps changing!
