Sexy Swedish Babe Eye Protection

Hello. Jallen Dragonhide checking in.

Today April 12, the day I happen to start my photo diary, is my 35th birthday. Blah.

I'm not sure what to say at the moment- I never do at first in "intro" topics.

So, Hi.

*edit*

Sometimes it's best to don your peril sensitive goggles and just charge full speed!!

*UPDATE!* I will be wrapping this diary up in a day or so, but all my NEW 2008 posts are here:

July 30th somewhere. I apologize for being so disorganized this summer... so much going on, and house constantly being torn apart and shifted around for the addition. The addition is OFFICIALLY FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!! But now, we're recovering from it.. still tons work to be done cleaning up...

La Maquisarde would have kicked my ass :-)

I took about 40 shots of that furry red and black ant-like thing running 100 miles per hour!!! (160 kph for you metric fans) I couldn't focus for crap, and when I was in focus, I forgot about using a faster shutter speed.. Argh.

I can and DO take better animal/insects pictures, but during this photo shoot I was totally thinking of La Maqu- "What would she do right now.... Hmmmm" but that goddamn little ant thingy going 100 MPH didnt give me time to think.

So I guess this is a sorta mini-tribute to her awesome awesome work cause I was trying to "channel" her and all... I need more practice with fast moving critters :)

Oh here's nother shot from the same day that I really like.

Aug 2nd I'll find a picture if I took any...

BTW I've a HORRIBLE day at work.. A 4 year long project we've been working on was suppose to come to a head and be completed today... didn't. We've thankfully seem to have narrowed it down to just a handful of variables we are not sure of.. and none of them seem to point in our direction that we screwed up.

Stuff you set up in the world of Information Technology NEVER work right the first few times you try it... never, it doesn't matter what Operating System.. sooner or later you will get hit by that phenomena. It just sucks that we made such a fortune off this and now.. look like shit.

*sigh* It was a big day of serious self-doubting wondering if I know anything... (turns out I did- a big company with certificated engineers stepped in to help and had exact same results I did, and I found myself one step ahead with suggestions... how cool is that with no formal training or certificates??..)

I just didnt want this day to go by without my noting this was actually one of the most frustrating stressful days I have had in a very long time... I'm good at being distracted and find joy in stuff like Flickr and pretend like bad shit like this doesn't happen.

Meanwhile I'll continue to waddle around like the penguin linux geek I am....... and be happy.

Oh dear. I had 32 years with IBM before i retired to be a barkeeper, and I know EXACTLY how you are feeling. Mortified, frustrated and embarrassed. It'll come right, and we'll be back to admiring your pics. I like the little Harry Potter on the 31st.

BTW, I'm a little mystified by the Cape Town reference, haven't had time to follow the news - I know they've had some storms, but that happens every year, that's why the Portuguese called it the Cape of Storms.

RobW- HAH! And the problem I'm having is with an IBM E-Series server running AIX... The ethernet cards- randomly quit working with no rhyme or reason, but works peachy-keen when I manually bring it down then up for... about 5 minutes to 30 minutes at a time. Not a good uptime for a BANK mainframe :P

I'm on my way now to kick it into submission.

By the way Rob, I had a childhood friend who sorta became my adopted "uncle" and I always thought you and he look SO MUCH alike.. he worked for IBM for 20+years.. how uncanny.

Thank you Lalaian- and oh, my eyes *are* spinning!!! You just sorta go with it anyway.. hehe

sunshinecity- yeah it's a FUN lens :) Thank you!

Glory- She's just THAT good! :-)
Oh you guys, I am blushing. There are so many fantastic shots in your streams that I am envious of your creativity and willingness to take risks. Me--I just point and shoot--over and over and over and over and over!!

bummer about the work thing though. I have only a high school education and am a self-employed gardener so high tech stuff always just startles me.
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
*eyes glaze over at the mention of e-series, aix and ethernet cards. Tim, I stopped being a technical IBMer in 1975, going into Consulting Services, Marketing Staff and then Insurance Industry solutions, with a horde of techies employed to do the hard stuff. No matter, I kept being involved in projects that had hiccups, and I was usually the guy who had to explain what had happened to senior management, Board members etc.

Further, within a week of leaving a big company, it's as if you no longer exist, all those years of sacrifice and contribution to the cause count for nothing, and likewise on my side, I rapidly forgot all I had ever learned, and put it aside. It's called retirement..

La M is so modest, apart from being a dynamite photgrapher, ethnic music expert, and really nice person.

LaM Here's a secret:

I point and shoot over and over and over too!! All the good ones do!! (not saying I'm GOOD as in Ansel Adams, but I feel fairy confident to say I don't totally STINK :-) )

I've learned a long time ago not to use a person's educational background as any kind of a barometer for their intelligence, creativity and ingenuity. Degrees, certifications and qualifications are just pieces of paper- looks nice on a wall.

And another secret- I only have a high school education too. I did go to college for a few years, but it never amounted to anything concrete (no diploma) except for lots of good experiences- especially in photography-- I miss the dark room!

RobW- Sorry for the geeky shop talk!!! :-) Problem still continues and we're finding ourselves fixing other people's problems. And me, I think Marketing WAY harder than the tech stuff.. haha

eelend- LOL You're right! Maybe I should have more bad days at work to wind back the life clock, huh?? You have a nice weekend, too!!!! :-D

Rick- Thank you!! and you speak like you know from experience...=IBM :-) My apple mac pal who was just visiting told me it stands for "I Buy Macs"

UGH it's been hell of a few days. I mean totally.

Today we finally solved I believe *all* the problems we've been having with the 4-year project coming to an end. We solved half-a-dozen of OTHER vendors problems.. only to get so stuck on the last problem that it took a day and a half to solve.

Turns out it was an error on our side.

I hate it when that happens. a long serious series of "Other people screwed up" that we solve made us blind that we screwed up on the final problem to be solved.

The good news is that the major financial institution client likes us, and she was with us throughout the whole process and saw the whole thing in action... and isn't in the least bit upset. But >I< am. I should have known better.

*sigh*

I'm behind again. At least I took photos. Just havent been to my DPD is all.... dialup sucks for updating your DPD's. But I will.

My holiday seems to start when school is back in session in my area. I work with a lot of schools, and our work gets really busy during the summer where we implement stuff that we can't with teachers and kids in the way.. :) Fortunately, I am getting close to where I can take a few days, maybe a WEEK off! Not made for speaking.

"Not Made for Speaking"

Also in my photostream... I bet most people miss the tongue-in-cheek personal joke. ;-)
One of my outlets for combating hellish weeks is to go out and photograph insects. That makes all other problems look trivial--I mean talk about frustration. Or dance. That is my favorite of course--dance.

I never judge a person by their education--unless they are too egotistically academic--I call that sort of thing "pretentious masterbation". (LIke a lot of modern art music)

Sweet lips--bet your wife likes what they are really for.

You're right! Those little critters moving 100 mph.. and if you don't have a plan laid out in advance about what settings to use.... it's crazy frustrating! :)

You're right again- the pretentious masturbation-- they annoy me the most. Inside (usually) I scream, "YEAH BUT YOU'RE A DUMB ASS ANYWAY". ;-)

I look forward to your trip and what you'll capture while there... I do my best photography when I'm about and traveling. Looking at very fresh surrounding and wanting to capture it helps.

County Fair

County Fair Ferris Wheel

Ian and I had a BLAST tonight. we rode everything-- except that one ride that flips you upside down.. he's too short for that ride.

The folks at the fair had the NERVE to block me from getting on one ride! They said I was too tall! Damn. So I was the daddy with the camera on the sidelines instead that time.

But every other time, I was with him... I love all that goofy stuff, and I have a big bonus--

I don't get dizzy. Not possible. What made me deaf also screwed with the fluids in my ear that gives ppl their sense of balance (I have bad balance)

The perk is that the fluid's so thick in my ears that they don't get spinning inside my head, so I don't get dizzy no matter how much I spin round and round.

I exploited that to my advantage in my photos, of course. See here!

That was a cool picture you linked to! (Those swings were always my favorite ride when I was a kid!)

Trixie used to love roller-coasters and things like that, until last year she went on one of those upside-down ones (she didn't sneak on, they let her on after checking her height). It held them upside down for a few minutes, and she felt like she was sliding out (she's a skinny little thing). Good thing the Consort was beside her, and he held her in.

Scary!

My wife is a high school Spanish/American Sign Language teacher. Yesterday it hit us that summer vacation's over for her this coming monday!

One thing we've been promising each other (or maybe she promising ME hehe) was that we'd go on a canoe float trip.

*Update for 11th..*

Being on dialup, I actually fell asleep while waiting for the damn image to upload, so I didn't follow up last night like I said I would! hehe

The rest of the story:

we went and rented a canoe from a canoe rental place that also ferries you to the put-in point, and then picks up up at the drop off point. Pretty cool service.

I hadn't done this before. Canoing down a river is something "I've always wanted to do, but never get around to" which is a shame, because I live right in the middle of the National Scenic Riverways which is protected by the Federal Government.

So here we are at the canoe rental place which is also a general store and a daycare. Turns out the woman running the rental counter has ELEVEN kids of her own... She didn't look much older than I.. there were kids screaming and crying everywhere while she was trying to process our paperwork... Oh boy, it was surreal & like out of a redneck movie... LOL

& then, we took the old retired school bus (with the school name painted over with black, of course) driven by I swear, Glory's little teenage sister (or perhaps a cousin) and I'm breaking DPD rules (I'm a rebel) and here she is:
Glory's Sister?

She totally caught me gawking at her, marveling at the crazy resemblance (No, not all redheads look the same to me! but she was close! lol)

I bet she is one of the 11 kids! She took along 3 other kids from the store with her, probably to give Mom a break.

I thought about asking to see her drivers license... She didn't look old enough to be driving, much less with a Commercial Drivers License! heh

Anyway, I didn't really take any more pictures after we put into the river... I had my camera in a waterproof bag, and I was too afraid to take it out while floating.

Which was a good thing, cause at one point I bailed out head-first and lost my paddle.

Oops.
Would have love to see pictures of the river trip; but I am like you. I want to go out in a boat so I can get closer to birds; but I would be afraid to take my camera. Too expensive of an investment to have it go overboard.

You fell in? oops! Did your wife or son fall in, too, of just you? At least they were smiling before the canoe trip...
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Hehehe Glory & rob :) Yep, totally gawkable.

friuduric- Just me... I made a good snap decision, I knew I was going to fall so I let go of the canoe and relaxed cause the last thing I wanted to do was make everybody go over with me holding the canoe with a death grip!

It was just a little bit of swift water and turning wrong that did me in- I was afraid of running into a pile of broken tree underwater so I sort of bailed out so I could dig in my heels and hold the canoe in place, which I did at the expense of my paddle that is still nowhere to be found.

Oops.

I forgot my %$#@ camera.. I had it all packed up ready to go on a trip down south. I of course forgot the bag.

It was a combination of an annoying day & an awesome day. A email server and a web server I just installed that week.. went down suddenly. It's a pair of servers that I set up for this rural school district about a hour drive south of us.

That was on Friday... and it didn't sit well with me for their email server to be down all weekend. All the rejected email... :P So, Saturday morning I drove all the way down there... Just to power down and power up the network switch they were connected. Took about 10 seconds to fix the problem. Still didn't know why they went down.

Monday, I found out that the computer lab- the roof had a hole in it.. and it rained ferociously on Friday.. the whole lab had about 2 inches of water in it. The surge suppressors were all underwater.

Thank god their server room escaped harm- it is next door to the lab. Egads.

Anyway on the way back home, I stopped by a state park, and went hiking around a Shut-in creek. And all I had was a camera phone.. bah.

It was a nice relaxing drive in the country & a nice hike tho. so it wasn't all bad.
