Sexy Swedish Babe Eye Protection

Hello. Jallen Dragonhide checking in.

Today April 12, the day I happen to start my photo diary, is my 35th birthday. Blah.

I'm not sure what to say at the moment- I never do at first in "intro" topics.

So, Hi.

Sometimes it's best to don your peril sensitive goggles and just charge full speed!!

*UPDATE!* I will be wrapping this diary up in a day or so, but all my NEW 2008 posts are here:

My office manager is SO frugal. Between him and my Dad, they both inspired me to start The Frugality Group. Come stop by, join, and submit some of the crazy ways you've seen people go to pinch pennies. :D

Figures that we would choose the hay season to do an addition to our tiny little house. I'm taking a quick breather for a SP while clearing some trees around the house.. See, it's in the middle of the woods, so I got to carve out a new yard out of the woods since the addition took over the old. I hauled away about 4 pickup truck full of trees.

Then in the afternoon my wife, son (who is 6 btw) and I all had to scramble to put up hay/... Just three of us (Mostly just my wife and I) we put up about 250 square bales ourselves cause it looked like it was going to rain... My brother was at work, and it's his hay, I was going t help him after work.

Then he finally came home (it didn't rain on us) and then we put up about 200 more.

ps: The ear protectors- they don't really do anything for me except keep the helmet on my head so it doesn't fall off. Works great at that. LOL

I'm probably bending the rules.... Sorry.....

How to Properly Throw a Hay Bale

....and not wretch your back

CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
I don't know...correct me if I'm wrong - but the bale keeps on coming back ! I worked many summers in high altitude hay fields (Utah) - it ain't easy but you sleep great ! Good luck on the addition...

CollardGreens: Oops!
Kind of like the Myth of Sisyphus--no matter how many times she throws that bale it keeps coming back and she has to throw it again and it comes back and she has to throw it again through eternity.
( A Gypsy Outdoors)
By the way, I know how heavy a bale of hay is; your wife is one strong woman. I am impressed.

Maquis- Thank you.. and yeah, they're heavy.. to put things into scale, my wife's just 5 feet 1 inch tall.. so I guess she's a lil' spitfire. ;-)

And god, it feels like the bales NEVER ends, you guys are right! :)

I've got a new phone! :)

Replaced my nearly dead Treo600 with a Treo680 that came out not too long ago. A bit disappointed there's not an increase in resolution, but at least the quality is much better. yay!

You can see better in larger size the difference, plus see all the geeky details you care to know. :)

Now only if I had cel signal at my house.... I'm still stuck on dialup- no broadband plans available.

Dragonhide 11 years ago
Nice to see you too Loca!! :)

Bella- Please I beg you, don't eat our horses.... hehehe

The terrain here is very rocky, not very good for crop farming, so the farmer's background I come from is beef cows. My parents converted it from a cow farm to a horse farm about 12 years ago, to revive a dying specialized breed of horses. My late-mother was very active in the breeding industry, and we had some really fine horses. Dad has however chosen to get out of the horse business, but my brother and I- we still have a handful of horses, and we mostly just farm HAY now. :)

So here we are. :)

I admit it gets old. :) That's why I have itchy feet and very badly want to travel some more. I LOVE traveling.

I'm not actually from Missouri, I grew up in the suburbs in Virginia Beach, VA, and then moved all over living in inner-cities and such.. My dad couldn't wait to turn 18 to leave the farm, so he joined the Navy for WWII at 17.. But when I finished school, the whole family moved to the farm, and picked up where Grandpa left off soooo...

I guess I'm pretty flexible :)

We eat horse meat here ! Not too bad really. But you are not eating "my friend flika" the horses are raised as cattle are for this purpose. OK we eat other things too - innards and such - some are REALLY bad tasting but the origins come from medivel times...ok I'm rambling too...CollardGreens: Oops!

Ramblings are always welcome here. Only fair, because I ramble too.

To me "ranching" means working cows with horses.. hell I dunno, I'm a transplant myself.. hahahaha They probably overlap, but where? That's what I dunno. :)

I've eaten all kinds of crazy diverse stuff, but horse is not one of them... my wife would probably divorce me, the horse nut she is.. lol

We can pick up on the kungfu konversation anytime.
I'd love to study wing chun/ving tsun someday, when I've got the time and the bread. Did you train in a group or one on one? Did you have someone there who knew ASL? I hate to stereotype, but I wonder about Deaf athletes and their ability to excel, like football linemen who aren't distracted by the sounds of the game. When I had tv, I enjoyed watching the Ultimate Fighter show, with all the MMA guys living in one house, trying to win a gig with the UFC. I was really rooting for Matt Hamill until he injured his elbow. He was such a positive presence on that show--especially in the face of all the jack-assery from the rest of the contestants.
Dragonhide Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Dragonhide (member) 11 years ago
Robw- thank you, and I know all about getting behind!

Wow, 6 days behind my diary.. I've been naughty. I have pictures though for most if not all the days, I'll fix it all up soon.. Have had family from San Diego visiting lately, so that has kept me really busy in addition to the house addition that is going like mad.

eeland- truck garden, I had to look that up hehe.. oh grow food for market? That does sound like a LOT of work!

Thank you jissy and mary!! nice to see you!

This may interest you... all about my kung-fu roots :) I studied with a group.. a small group, we usually stayed around 10 people. I did study at a different school in Minnesota for a few weeks.. I for the life of me cannot remember the Sifu's name... :P he was pretty young and came straight from China.. I couldn't understand shit when he talked.. I couldn't even BEGIN to lipread him with his accent (I can't really lipread anyway, but... hehe) So it didn't last...

I followed the whole Ultimate Fighter series... I was also rooting for Matt :) Poor guy. I think he got a bit too cocky though and it bit him at the end. I haven't heard a peep anywhere about him... Hope he didn't just fall off the radar. He's an awesome wrestler- trying to "prove a point" by trying to brawl and not go down was a big mistake.

*sigh* I really miss the martial arts.. I am currently without a school. My present teacher is too sick to teach (cancer)- has blood dialysis 3x a week and kicked out his assistant over something ugly that I'm not privy about, and I'm his closest replacement, and it just didn't work out he had to close down the dojo. :(

a real bummer, cause there is no real alternatives this far from a city- I was very lucky to find him- he got tired of the big city and decided to come out to the country to escape and work on his health and raise his family.

On the plus side, I've got a son, and he asked me to start teaching him. :) Funny story there- "Hey Dad, can you teach me karate???" "Yes, Ian, I will love to teach you."

"Like this??" *tries to do a jumping side kick and slips on the wood floor and *whacks* his head on the ground! Oh it was horrible! OWWWWWW

Few minutes later, he's sitting on my lap on the sofa holding a bag of ice on his head, "First lesson, Ian: Do not do jumping kicks with socks on wood floor."

ebilflindas 11 years ago
Wow, Tim, thanks for the great reply and wonderful story! You have family living in San Diego? Do you ever make it out here? Please make sure you let me know--besides the fact that it would be cool to meet you, I could hook you up with some martial artists! I had what seemed to me as a close call with mother nature. Probably making a mountain outta an anthill, but I'll be damned if it didn't shake me up!

We've been having a bit of a drought spell for several weeks now. Once in a while we would get this puny very light rain that doesn't do squat.

Anyway this morning I had a very vivid dream that involved funnel clouds forming and huge earth shaking thunderstorms as the backdrop of the dream.

It was sunny when I left for work. Later on it got dark and rainy and would rain hard on and off all day.. I think all the storms were formed over us all day that drifted up northeast... pretty unusual to be the birthplace of storms for us.

Anyway I was driving to the dentist, and it was dark and stormy, and what appears to be funnel clouds started forming in the sky up.. I only had my celphone handy so I snapped a really lame shot that doesn't do it an iota of justice.

Doesn't look like a big deal in the pix, but shortly after that... while I was driving a huge flash of light went off directly behind my van and immediately felt the ground shake like a bomb went off directly behind me. Lightning. One of the biggest BANG I've ever felt in my life.. I just about had to change my shorts.

I kept on going to the dentist and got my teeth cleaned, and Look Mom, No Cavities!

First your new addition looks bigger than my whole house!

I remember listening to the farmers baling the hay at night when I was little. I grew up on a farm smack dab in alfalfa/cotton country. They did it at night because it was too hot during the day--being usually around 110 degrees or more.

Great self-portrait. I love everyone sitting in the creek. What a life. I wish I had a creek to sit in.

Take care.

Thanks Rob, Jissy & eeland!!

Bunaen- hahaha yeah yeah, it does look like that. :) The add-on is slightly smaller than the house, but appears much bigger cause the space is much more better organized and open... I can't wait!

sunshinecity- yeah, it's freaky, just plain freaky. A lot dreams I do NOT want to come true, some I wouldn't mind....... :)

La Maqu- Woah. 110 degrees. That's neat, bailing hay in the middle of the night. We would do that, but it isn't dry out here, at nights, it gets all misty (*note to self go out and shoot some of that!*) so when it's all misty the hay bales get really heavy, and it's not good for them to get wet again... sooo 100 degrees 90+% humidity, here we come! UGH

also, it's a LOT LOT cheaper to have a bigger house in the country in Missouri than it is anywhere out west, that is for sure.... I remember almost having a heart attack finding out a 1 bedroom house in LA went for 200 thousand dollars.. That'd buy you a MANSION with a farm out here!

The fast progress is now over... The rough construction always goes so fast and is so amazing to watch. From this point on it's all kinds of detail work that takes a long time hence the slower "apparent" progress.

This is some new Insulation technology- cellulose stuff.. like a huge spitball tossing machine, shoots out wads of spitballs that looks like a cross between an actual spitball and dryer lint. It's so much better than the yucky itchy pink or yellow insulation rolls. It isn't itchy at all, and doesn't burn and all that good stuff.

Drywall folks came by today and dropped off all the sheet rock walls.. They might start tomorrow if they finish another project, if not, then Thursday, and they expect it to take a week.

So far: rough construction, a new back deck, rough plumbing, rough electricity work are all done. Our turn's coming up soon.. We'll be doing all the flooring and tiles ourselves.

RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
Yes, do the wiring now, even if you don't use it. Spitball insulation sounds vaguely disturbing.

We live in a seismically active area (i.e. frequent earthquaks, so your construction looks comparatively flimsy compared to what we have to put in - reinforced concrete everywhere, and heavy-duty foundations. We have 60 tons of steel in the foundations of our bar, which is a really flimsy structure.

The unfortunate thing is... I live a hour maybe two from one of the most dangerous fault line in the United States- New Madrid Fault... California gets all the attention, but there is a fault under great pressure and predicted to go off.... few years go. :P

Last time it went off was 1811.. and it caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards, and church bells in Boston, Massachusetts to ring.. YIKES

The good thing about flimsy construction is that we can kick it off us and shake the spitballs out of our hair... hopefully. heheh

That's it. I'm sleeping with a helmet on from now on.

Bunaen did illustrate very well exactly what I was thinking of... ;-) Although I will probably place a woofer under the floor where the couch is for us Deafies enjoyment... nothing like an ass-shaking to enjoy all the action flicks with. hehe

A Slice of Americana.. Baseball!!

Life lesson:

My son Ian, the baseball season ends tonight. This is his first time playing baseball-- in Spain they don't play baseball at all, so my wife didn't know the rules, and me? I hate(d) baseball.

But gosh, I am so proud of my 6 year old son. He went from being the last person to bat in the lineup in the beginning of the season... to tonight, the second batter in the lineup. This is like in a group of 15 or so kids.. He kicked some butt!!

They organize the batter line-up by order of skills.... he was worst, but in less than the month, he was #2 in the lineup.. Awesome! :)

*proud daddy*

Oh I still think baseball is boring, But that is besides the point. hehe

That's very cool--I just watched Chicken Little yesterday, too.
Is that photo of Ian rounding a base? It's a cool shot!

Baseball rocks! Good luck to your son.

You made some good progress on your addition. That would have taken me the entire summer. We're planning an addition on our cottage. That's a few years away -- 600 sq ft just doesn't cut it any more! Great job.
Dragonhide 11 years ago
I haven't seen Chicken Little yet, just snippets here and there.. It's hard to get me to sit still enough to watch anything on TV.. But, yeah, Ian is always telling me that he looks like Chicken Little with the baseball helmet on.. hehe Yeah, he's rounding 3rd base in that photo above :)

Rick- I did it the easy way- I hired a general contractor! hehe He is an old friend, and my brother used to work for him... so I trust him, and so far very awesome. We will be doing a lot of the finishing touches ourselves.. like installing the wood floor, tiles, paint and all that.

I hear you about 600 sq ft. Our house was 900 sq foot.. not all that much bigger than your cottage. It's fine for a newlywed couple, but gets really tight when ALL the in-laws come to visit from Spain for a month plus the kid and his friends... I want to WANT to come home, and not hide at my office at work until I think they're all in bed and sneak back in.. hehe
sunshinecity 11 years ago
how awesome for your kid... in Italyt baseball only caught on in Nettuno, where I stayed these past few days... and this is only due to the influence brought on by the American soldiers who stopped there during WWII... (not sure if you read my last post in my diary)

Great too see all the progress on the addition btw... that spit insulation sounds awful cool! LOL

Uh, house prices on the coast of California are unbelieveable. My little 850 sq. foot house on a lot of 50' x 100' would sell for $700,000 plus if I put it on the market. (and yes, all those zeros are correct).
P.s. I originally paid $60,000 for it--in 1983.

lol- i know what you saying- my hubby used to play cricket which i found to be (yawn) exciting- but would often go and sit and support him- beaming at pride! guess its funny how we get that way about family even if it's something we totally not into!

Cricket is boring snoring and totally evil.

I'd rather go and visit a museum filled with toenail clippings and bellybutton lint...

Alex- Awesome stuff you linked to... Very interesting! Baseball's allright... I'm not your typical midwestern baseball freak... But my son playing baseball? Hell yeah, GO IAN!!!!!!!!!! :-)

WOW, talk about an investment.. you could live like a queen in in the midwest..

But of course, you wouldn't have the coast.. :P I really miss living on the coast. I'm originally from Virginia Beach, and our house was next to a bay... great memories of sailing and catching my own seafood.

eelend- it's funny to watch Merche interact with the coaches.. They are always so surprised when Merche asks questions about baseball basics. It's like someone not knowing anything about futbol over where you are.. that's like a sin!! hehe

Ha. Some people marry Lutheran, some people marry Catholic, I married baseball. Great texture in the photo.
