2007 Rebecca

Rebecca... PRO 1:06pm, 20 March 2007
Hi there, I'm Rebecca. I've been meaning to do this kind of thing for ages and found this group on Flickr recently so here we go. Hopefully being part of a group will encourage me to keep it up too. I don't have a good digital camera so most of the pics on here will be pretty rubbish!

I'm 26, live in Newquay, Cornwall. I never make resolutions (because I'm too weak at keeping them) but my aims for 2007 are:

win the lottery.

Failing that:
Stop spending so much
See a dentist
Surf more / better
Take more photos
Be happy!

2007 the story so far:
January - save save save, yawn! Agonise over designs for new surfboard.
February - saw Bloc Party in Bristol, got 1 year older, got lovely new board, went to Morocco.
March - Back at work after holiday :( at least the days are getting longer though.

So that's me so far, now got to put the last week's photos I've been saving up on here...

It's hard to see in this picture, but it's still totally flat. Despite this, the dark stain on the sea is actually a load of tourists who don't realise you need waves to go surfing.

We didn't do the Watergate BLU today, the surf was almost non-existant but they still ran it. Jon & Emma wanted to go for a surf anyway so we all went for a freesurf, terrible surf but great to be in the water with the sunshine.
On the rat front - they're getting really brave & friendly now, problem is they won't stay still long enough to take a decent picture.

oh bugger

Daren walked into my office this afternoon, looked mournfully at the empty jar and said 'damn I really fancy some sweets.' It's gone all stormy again, so we headed down to the harbour after work to watch. Amazingly there were two guys out in the storm surf, we thought they were tourists who'd got stuck at first but on closer inspection they knew what they were doing. Phew. I saw this old boat in the harbour, I love the way the paint was peeling off, such seasidey colours.

Two years ago I was still living in London, but had handed in my notice and was planning my move down here when the bombs went off on July 7 2005. Today's news reminded me of how it felt living in London at that time, and how removed from all that we are in Cornwall.

Glow - I'm very lucky, I live 5 minutes walk from the beach (see 14 June, that's the one I can walk to). Which is a fat lot of good when all it does is rain! We've had the wettest June on record or something in the UK, what's it been like en France?

Day 2 of the Club Champs. Not raining so much but overnight we've gone from virtually flat to overhead surf. Luckily for me the lifeguards decided to close the beach because of the big surf / strong wind combination and I didn't have to go out. However I saw these tourists on the ay down anyway, one of them was wearing shorts over the top of his wetsuit. I despair.

Up in Devon for a Hotdoggers comp today, the weather was actually pretty good for once so we took Chris's car instead of the van - it looked really funny with four massive boards on top of it. Neither of us did too well, we just haven't been surfing enough recently, so we were both a bit dissapointed and have decided we've got to surf at least once during the week even if it is terrible.

I hate mondays, work is such a slog. Then on the way home we avoided a traffic jam by taking a sneaky backroad only to be caught by another one. It took us 1/2 hour to do the last 3 miles, the police were diverting the traffic into Crantock and the narrow roads were obviously scaring the tourists. Pretty though - this is some bracken growing in the high hedge.

Went to see Adrian our surfboard shaper today to pick up some fins Chris ordered. I love visiting his workshop, there are so many interesting things to look at, least of all the new boards waiting to be picked up. After work today we went to a couple of beaches and the harbor and just took photos and people watched. It's amazing how cheerful everyone becomes when the sun comes out.

Last surf of the day

We've both been a bit stressed recently I think, we could do with a bit of time off. We decided to make the most of the weather while it lasts and destress by going for a surf & bbq on the beach after work. I can't believe it's August already, this year is flying by. The traffic is starting to get bad on the way home from work, so Chris decided to try to get home without going on a main road. Tonight we're heading up to stay at Chris's mum's in Bristol before going on to my parents on saturday. Which means I have to part with his sister's DSLR and return to the lowly camera phone. It's so nice to be back home and see my parents, I haven't seen them since Grampy's funeral in April so it's good to see them in happier circumstances. I'm bored. This week seems to be an endless repetition of getting up, going to work, getting home, eating, going to bed. I'm missing the DSLR a LOT too, it's hard to motivate yourself to take photos when you're bored, the weather's crap and you've only got a cameraphone with you. My saturday morning lie-in was interrupted this morning by my dad, with the news that the Penhallow Hotel was on fire in town. Newquay has suddenly become the main focus of the UK news and it's really busy in town with everyone stood watching the demolition work. It's pretty shocking, there's practically nothing left of the hotel and no-one is sure how many people are missing. Well, hello surfer girl!

I so enjoy visiting diaries I've never seen before, and I've enjoyed browsing yours and getting to know your life, which you seem to have well under control.

All about rain, and rats, some good food on the way, but really about the beach, the surf, the weather. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you've got a wetsuit on, you can still surf in the rain?

if not, you could always relocate to my home town, Cape Town, or where grew up, Durban.

Carry on chewing, Becca!

Hi guys, haven't updated in a few weeks so hello, and thanks for the comments!

We don't get the best surf here in the UK either, I don't think many people outside the UK actually know we get surf. The surf's best in the winter when the water is freezing, and when it does finally warm up for the summer it's mostly flat and full of tourists - you just have to make the most of what you get, and invest in a good wetsuit!

The weather is a national obsession, and it's official, we've just had our wettest summer ever. Humbug.

boats by lowertown quay

I have this week off work every year. Normally the surf is amazing. The strange weather trend continues and so does the flat spell. So we booked a last minute helicopter flight over to the Isles of Scilly. It's amazing, the sea and the colours, the boats, the lack of people or cars.
