Hello. I'm Summer. I live in northern California and spend my working days as a water resources/water quality engineer and my spare time with friends, cooking, hiking, and snapping photos obsessively. Welcome to my 2007 photojournal...debuting on February 15th...

from my valentine

Valentine's Day brought the arrival of my neice, Cassidy Leanne. This morning I got into the office to find this bouquet from Ken sitting on my desk. Prettiest of pink and smells so pretty. Oh how I love him.

Growing Old Together

My grandma bought this little ceramic couple back in the 1950s. They're about 4 inches tall. Over Thanksgiving she gave them to me, so now they sit on my shelf. I thought that they represented the theme of love and committment, something that is on my mind these days.

Beautiful flowers on the 14th. Isn't it nice when they smell as pretty as they look?

the elephant in the corner
the elephant in the corner

This is the earth corner of my little mandala art project. I shot this photo for the 15th day of the month's theme: the beast that lives at my place.

I'm going to be moving within the next month or so, and am therefore evaluating my knick knacks and other things...some of them might not make the move. Though the elephant will, as will the rock (which I've had since I was 4), the mandala is likely to be dismantled.

Very nice that the Amarillos (men can't spell ) are opening so nicely. Tulips are in full bloom in Keukenhof, The Netherlands (BIG tulip park in Holland). Good Stuff - welcome to the journal...

Happy belated birthday! (I think that the older I get, the more I find myself used "belated" in that phrase...)

Some lovely photos here. Looking forward to peeking in throughout the year!

Seen on my drive into the office....a small group of protesters encouraging that passers by make a call into our district Representative opposing more funding for the Iraq war. Not as pretty as flowers, but certainly more poignant.

Seeds of protest. I am very happy that americans have seen the light - it saddens me that the light from a country ablaze. I had the chance to talk to an ex-Bagdad resident while I was in Syria (he fled the night of the first bombing...) - the time was in the first year after the start of the war. He predicted this outcome...I apologized for what we had done to his family...he couldn't accept the apology but we are friends now...he is alone.

Let's stir this pot till it boils...sorry to climb up on a soapbox here.

Thanks for planting a seed !

February 25th: Do you salsa? (by ~summer~)
Do you salsa?

These canned salsas are found on the aisle with the Mexican foods. The tomatillo is best on tacos, the ranchera is best on eggs, and the pico de gallo is good for chips, eggs, and tacos. I like these because I can buy a bunch, leave them in the cabinet, and they're there if I'm in the mood. We made chicken tacos this weekend, and we had all of these open so our friends could test 'em out.

Sunset up I Street

The sunsets have been gorgeous because there've been storm clouds in the skies the past few days. I haven't really had the time to snap super good shots. This is the view up the street...and I'll be moving soon, so there's a little poignancy for me here.

Catching up on a few of these from the weekend. I went to Lora's on Thursday and addressed her wedding invitations with my prettiest calligraphy. The moon was gorgeous from behind her flowering plum, but it wouldn't stay still for a photo, so instead I photographed my $7 shoes.

I asked Ken to stop at this oak as we drove to sushi Friday. The man who lives in the house by our photo location startled me by saying "beautiful tree, isn't it?" He was so proud of his view. I said it was particularly nice with the moon behind it. He said I should see it at sunrise. :-)

There you are...had a bit of trouble finding your thread amongst the others. Just a suggestion here. If you put a link at the bottom of your posts then the reader can follow that link back to your thread. For example...your link could read like this:

(Don't mean to be a critic but it helps bring folks to your site - )

I'm doing some catch up posting now (and I missed a lot of days due to a full camera and no time to download). I moved over the past couple of weeks - from Sacramento to the San Francisco Peninsula. I've been getting in the swing of a train/BART commute, a new office (same job, but transferred), a new town. Not to mention trying to unpack things and still find time to have fun.

This was taken inside the dump transfer station. The spots are particulates in the air (I took one of just the air w/o the loader (to make sure my camera lense wasn't the culprit) and spots showed up in different places). Great work environment for some hard workin' guy (sarcasm included).

There was a fire along the railroad tracks in Sacramento. The creosote they use as a preservative make the thing spread fast. It took a couple of days to put it out and the air stunk. I was headed back for some final cleaning of the old apt.

Ken got a call at 8:30 AM on Saturday from a lady who lives near the house he's building. Her cat was lost, they could hear him, she thought he was trapped in Ken's house. Ken thought not, said he'd ask his guys to keep a lookout. His guy calls back, says the cat is in a tree.

Later, we had to swing by. We got there and saw this guy up at the tippy top of the Redwood in the yard behind Ken's. TIPPY TOP! At least 80 feet. He had a plastic garbage with the cat in it and was s-l-o-w-l-y climbing down. All in a days work?

Your lasagna looks wonderful. I'm sure it tasted even better... Did you use zucchini in it?

Great shot of the pink columbine, I like the dof in that shot.

ParaScubaSailor en voillage (prononcez voyage, petits voilleurs)...
summersumz PRO 11 years ago
I used lots of zucchini in it. The first layer was ricotta and lots of fresh spinach leaves, next was my pasta sauce (ground turkey sautéed with onions, garlic, and mushrooms), then a layer with ricotta and carefully placed zucchini that I had sautéed with onions and garlic. Topped with mozzarella and Parmesan. It tasted even better the 2nd day.

I've visited your thread and photostream, but this is my first time leaving a comment.
Glad to see another drive-by photographer! I particularly enjoy your flipping-off-the-Hummer shots!

Fruit Salad Tree (by ~summer~)
Fruit Salad Tree

The other day Ken asked me, "if you could have one fruit tree, what would it be?" At the same time we said, "Peach!" He decided that we should buy a 5 gallon peach tree and keep it in a pot for the next year or so till we buy a house. So we set off for the local nursery to pick our tree.

We wandered over to the stone fruit trees and quickly realized that there was more to learn before selecting our tree. We found the Wegman's man and convinced him he needed to walk back to the trees with us. It turns out that most peach trees sold by nurseries are grafted cultivars. There were two types of trees under consideration: peach cultivars and "fruit salad" cultivars. The fruit salad trees contained the branches of 3 or 4 different stone fruits grafted onto a hearty root stock. These included peach/plum/nectarine combos as well as peach/plum/apricot, peach/nectarine/apricot, etc.

We selected one with two peaches, one nectarine, and a late santa rosa plum. Fruiting occurs on 2-year old branches, so we might get a peach or two this July...
