Oh, I'll bet prices in the City will be a bit higher than Upstate. And, y'know, the thing about San Diego--it's all s-p-r-e-a-d out, aka sprawl. and we live down in the southern end, but everything we do--school, work, play--is 15-20 miles north of us. plus it would be kinda hard schleppin' a massage table around on a bicycle!

@sunshine: LOL! we're trying hard to cover our walls. I don't consider myself to be a very picky person, but for some reason, we're having a really tough time deciding what to put up in our room. Even though we have a few things hanging on the walls throughout the rest of our apartment, we haven't found anything that we like for the bedroom yet!

Support

Sometimes we all need a bit of support...

I bought a new bra yesterday and managed to wear it out and about today...and WOW does it give tons of support! It made me so happy that I just had to take a picture of it!

However by the end of the day, the subject of my photo ended up being more than a symbol of the physical support that it offered me.

Bo and I had a long discussion about the process of grieving. He expressed his thoughts for the way that he has emotionally been handling his father's death and the fact that he doesn't really like how he is handling it...that he does not think his behavior is always "appropriate" to the circumstances.

But people grieve differently. It's easier for some while it's harder for others. And they express their pain in different ways. Publicly. Privately. Never outwardly, but always inside themselves to the point that they want to burst out. Myself, I've never lost someone very close to me so I can't say that I know what is "appropriate" either. All I know is that over time we lose people who we love. I don't know if there ever is a "right" way to grieve.
BellaGaia PRO Posted 11 years ago. Edited by BellaGaia (member) 11 years ago
I've lost a lot of people close to me -- 4 in one year once..... it gets numbing -- but as the receiver of so many trying to say and do the right thing.....As a "supporter" the best advice i can offer is (and you probably know this) -- it's not about words of comfort that you offer -- there are none. Just be there.... because sometimes the griever doesn't even know what they want or need.... a bite of food, glass of water, an ear, a shoulder, an extra pair of hands to help out. I'm glad Bo has you.
I saw Reign Over Me yesterday -- I cannot imagine that much grief all at once and then to be constantly reminded about it ever after every where you go.

p.s. i'm with sunshine, you need a bit of decoration in your bedroom, luv -- or perhaps you can arrange the clothing into a labyrinth or something.... there's an idea.... work with what you have ;-)

Happy Birthday Mom!!

It was a good day. Called my mom in the morning to wish her a good day and spent the rest of the day cleaning the house to get ready for Bo's mom and stepdad. We'll be driving down to Manhattan early tomorrow morning to spend the day with them and bring them to Ithaca.

While I was taking a break from cleaning, I had a little fun with our "party lens" again. Hmmm...by the look of things, I think I need to pluck my eyebrows soon. :)

Spent the day in Manhattan with Bo's folks. Surprisingly, traffic wasn't too bad and I learned that Manhattan can, in fact, be manageable by car from time to time. We picked up our visitors from the New Yorker Hotel, which is on the corner of 34th and 8th streets, just a couple of blocks away from the Empire State Building. They actually arrived a couple of days earlier and so they have been touring for a while already. We didn't do anything in particular today. Just took an easy day walking around a bit and exploring various parts of the city by subway. We explored shops and vendors, poked our way through Chinatown and ate dinner in Little Italy. A pretty laid back day in a very busy city. At the end of the day we hopped in my car and drove back up to Ithaca. It usually takes us about 4 and a half hours to get from NYC to Ithaca, but we took a wrong turn and lost ended up losing an hour.

Tooday's photo was taken in a Macy's in NYC. This particular Macy's looked like a jungle. They have a flora exhibit running and so there were tons and tons of flowers and trees everywhere. It was odd seeing a tour group with a guide talking about plants in the middle of a clothing store. Only in New York!

Bo and I cooked a really nice dinner tonight for the family. Well, it was mainly Bo, but I helped a little :). Arugala salad with freshly cut parmasean with basil and capers. Asparagus in butter. Sliced eggplant, lightly breaded, and fried in chili oil. And a huge pollock fillet with fresh basil.

After dinner, Bo and I went to a fun little wine-tasting party at Lauren and Martin's house. Required for entry was a bottle of Cabernet Sav that cost between $8 and $12. If arriving as a couple, we were also required to bring a bit of food to go along with the wine. In the end it turned out to be way too many bottles of wine to get any useful tasting comments towards the end of the party (at least 20 bottles), but it was ALOT of fun.

Today's photo is of the hostess, Lauren. Or at least of her legs. I just loved what she wore tonight, but especially her shoes and stockings.

t was a blah day. Actually it was worse than blah for me. I worked for much of the day, came home for dinner, and continued working in the lab from 10pm until 4:30 in the morning. Eric and I cranked through our data and finished (thankfully) what we set out to accomplish for the day. But did I really need to stay until 4:30 in the morning??...Well, only if I want to go shopping with the family the next day! :)

Monday, April 9, 2007

Throughout the day, I had one recurring thought: That it was totally worth working late into the night yesterday so that I could have a weekday off to go shopping.

There's an outlet mall about an hour north of us. And as an added bonus, it is located near Seneca Lake which is very full with wineries. So before we shopped, we drank--with Bo kindly serving as our designated driver. We stopped 3 wineries probably within a 30 or 40 min period and probably tasted somewhere between 15 and 20 wines. Oh, what a good start to the day. Then we shopped for awhile. Then stopped by Taughannock Falls on the way home just before dark.

Today's photo is of Bo's mom and stepdad doing a bit of wine tasting

Family Photo

It was a ho hum day. I worked all day. I didn't feel like going into the office and I didn't have anything do to in the lab, so I headed for the cafe over at Wegmans, the mega grocery store in our town...because they had food and free internet. And despite the fact that it's a grocery store, the upper level of the cafe certainly doesn't feel like one.

On my way out several hours later, I ran into Ole and Alice--Bo's folks, arriving to do some shopping for dinner. I joined them and shopped with them, and also went over to the wine store with them and picked out my share of red wine.

Ole and Alice cooked a Danish dinner for us tonight: Hakkebøf with potatoes. For dessert, orange slices topped with honey and Cointreau liqueur. Yum!

One more photo at the good ol' dinner table. This time with more house guests. Bo and I put some ribs and chicken drumsticks into the smoker last night so that we could have a nice BBQ dinner with friends tonight. But unfortunately, we left them in the smoker way too long and they became pretty ruined. So bo, with his infinitely creative mind, tried to salvage some of the hardened, burnt food by simmering the ribs in water and making a chili out of the chicken. The chili turned out pretty successful, but the ribs ended up only so-so. Bo also smoked a new set of drumsticks a few hours before the guests arrived and thankfully, those turned out to be excellent. Either way it was a fun dinner. Sam, Mark, Liz, and Erik came over to meet Bo's parents and to grub on some food. And I think there's something special about being able to have fun even though things didn't turn out quite the way we hoped. At least all of the other aspects were there...good wine, a good set of drumsticks, good desserts, good cheese, and certainly good company. Cheers!

There is a bouquet of flowers that Kat gave Bo a few weeks ago when Bo's dad died. They are still sitting in our living room, gracefully bowing their heads and slowly fading away. A somber rememberance of last month's events.

Friday "The 13th" of April, 2007

I felt rushed all day. Rushing to meet deadlines, hurried thoughts flooded my mind. In retrospect, the thoughts were more quantity than they were quality, which only frustrated me more.

My moment of peace came when Bo and I arrived to an empty apartment. He turned up the music. I grabbed my camera and started shooting. I reverse-mounted Bo's 24mm lens to my 85 mm to get some interesting artsy macro shots to further document Bo's flowers. Today's photos are of the little purple buds of the flower boquet. They can be vaguely seen in the background of my phto from yesterday.

Now I feel relaxed. Bo's folks just returned from a day trip to Niagara Falls and now it is "family time". Despite the fact that it can be tough to entertain guests, I must admit that I like it when family visits. There tends to be comfort in the house. A lot of care. And a lot of love.

Spent the whole day with Bo and his folks and it was a great day. We set off in the morning to check out the local farmer's market, which turned out to be substantially lacking in vendors of fresh produce due to the cold weather we've been having lately. But there were still enough vendors to walk around and get a taste all of the local farms and artists. Bo and I walked away with fresh potatoes and garlic, while Bo's mom and stepdad walked away with a nice cutting board and other wood works.

Aftter the farmers market we drove through the countryside to show them Greek Peak, a little ski resort nearby. After that it was back to Ithaca for a late lunch, a nap, then dinner at Kelly's. It was crab night. All you can eat crab legs. And it was fabulous. Bo and I have been there for crab night many times and it's just excellent. Ole had never eaten snow crabs before so he was really excited about it. Just how excited was he? Well, I think the photo speaks for itself.

By the end of the evening Me, Bo, and Ole, each had about 5 plates-full of crab legs. We tore it up. Mmmmm...I can still taste it now.

I am sitting at the dining room table trying to get a bit of work done before I go to bed. If I look straight up, there is this light fixture right above me. I don't really like it too much, but it came with the apartment, and Bo and I are both too lazy to do anything about it. Even though it works perfectly fine and is one of our light sources in the dining room, we often neglect it--just let it hang there, unappreciated, and nearly forgotten.

It was a very nasty day outside. It rained all day and it is expected to snow overnight. I hardly did anything today. I ate ALOT of cheese in the morning, and again I find myself craving it. I took a nap late in the afternoon. Ate more. Now a bit of work...and maybe, just maybe I'll take a teeny-weeny bit of cheese before finally settling into bed.

Happy Birthday, Bo!!!!

Bo turned 40 today, and we had a party at our apartment to celebrate. It was a really wonderful evening. Bo sent out an invitation for dinner consisting of smoked pork shoulders that he'd been smoking since yesterday. And the people kept arriving. As the night went on, more beverages were consumed to the point where, at random moments, people started breaking out with the Swedish (I think) birthday song...except that it started sounding more and more like a drinking song by the end of the night...lol. Bo isn't big into birthdays, but I think he really had a great time. Today's photo is of Bo and Eric at the party.

It was back to work today. Sigh. Today I worked on a research presentation that I'm giving at a small conference on Saturday. Now that the weather is starting to lift, it is even more depressing to be working in my building because we don't have windows and I often fear that I will miss the sun. Luckily, I left work while there was still plenty of light. I walked home along the gorge accompanied by a nice cool breeze. The highlight of my day came when I arrived back home to find two squirrels playing and looking for food right outside of my apartment. It was a fun opportunity to grab my camera and get some fun shots. So today, I offer a photo of one of the squirrels...trying to escape the clutches of my camera by running down the fire escape. It was clear that he didn't want his face to be seen, so he offered me another pose instead.

It was an extremely long day for both Bo and me. Both of us are presenting our research tomorrow and both of us are scambling to finish. I was too late to print out my 3 ft x 4 ft research poster at the libray this evening, and I refused to have it printed at Kinkos, where they would probably have charged me $100 to print out a document that large, especially since it would only cost me $16 on campus. If only the damn library was open so I could use the printer. Rather, Bo and I ended up buying a cheap $24 color printer from Kmart and I ended up printing out my research poster as individual slides instead. Only problem was that we later realized that the printer wasn't Macintosh compatible so I ended up having to haul out my old cluncky Dell laptop. Didn't get to bed until 4:30 in the morning only to wake up at 8 to get ready to leave. Poor Bo...he got less sleep than I did.

The conference went ok. For a conference this small, there were a broad range of topics, which made it difficult to find someone with a common interest in order advance a conversation about anyone's research to a deeper level. But hey, that's ok. It was free to attend and free to participate. And at least I have another presentation under my belt. Later tonight, I had to go up to campus to mix a bunch of chemicals in preparation of the perfusions that I have to do tomorrow. But it wasn't until I finished the last chemical that I realized that I screwed it all up!! Each of the chemicals I mixed tonight had a common base ingredient, which I also had to mix up tonight...But I made it incorrectly, which meant everything else I made was incorrect! I spent two hours in the lab and at the end, I had to dump everything out! ACK! By that time, it has just turned midnight and I didn't feel like trying to make it all up again, so I just went home. This means I have to come to campus even earlier tomorrow.

It was a gorgeous day. It was sunny and very warm with temperatures reaching 80F. I was bummed that I had to be in the lab today, but I made sure to hurry so that I could catch some of the sun. After I finished, Bo and I sat out in the sun together. It was fantastic! I just love feeling the sun on my body. It really lifts my mood...especially following an April snowstorm :)

Of course, we both had our cameras out today. I could hear many birds around, so I made it a goal to come away with some bird photos. One thing I learned: I am not a very good bird watcher!! LOL. Today's photo is of the last bird I saw while I was sitting outside and the only reason why I was able to get a photo of him was because he was a lazy bird. He just didn't care. I don't think he moved from that branch for 15 minutes. Which I guess was good for me since I was able to accomplish my goal for the afternoon. :)

So how do you get to work?

As for myself, I usually take the bus since it makes my knees sore to hike up the hill day after day. It's excellent exercise, but I suppose I'll have to work my way up to the point where I can walk up the ginormous hill on a daily basis. Since we've been having a streak of good weather, I thought it would be a great day forget about the bus and walk up. My school is at the top of a big hill, and there are many different paths to get up there by foot. The path that I took today is by far the most gorgeous: the Cascadilla Gorge trail which--according to trail guides--is about one third of a mile long, although I think it's slightly longer. Luckily for me, the foot of the path gorge starts one block from my apartment and continues uphill from there.

As you hike up, pedestrians encounter waterfall after waterfall and the rushing water allows you to get immersed in thought. There really is a special charm about that trail. It's certainly one of my favorites.

I had a night out on the town. Bern passed his A-exam defense which is basically the equivalent of Qualifying exams in other graduate study programs in the US, so we all went out to celebrate, and it was quite fun.

I'm aiming to defend my own A-exam in late June so I am certainly starting to feel the pressure. The exam consists of 3 written documents that I have to produce for my Committee which address certain topics related to my general research area. After the documents are submitted, I will need to hold a private meeting with them where they grill me for 2 hours about what I've written, or pretty much about anything else. Only after that would I be considered a "PhD Candidate" and can advance to the point where I can start working seriously on my dissertation.

But anyway, I am very happy that Bern passed. One by one, we're all getting it done. I guess I'll be one of the next ones, and frankly, it's scaring the crap outta me.

I was grumpy for much of the day. Forgot my cell phone at home. Forgot to bring my office keys with me. Awful odors coming from the construction area where the lab renovations are happening and getting into the hallway where my office is. And other typical academic stressors.

I spent the entire day in the lab troubleshooting one of the histology procedures that I do. The procedure itself involves two days separated by a 48 hr interval between them, which means the entire thing really takes 4 days. The first day involves 1 and a half hours worth of chemical reactions, while the final day involves 6 hours. Today was the final day of the reaction so today I was grumpy.

Later tonight, Bo told me he was playing around with the reversal ring to take some macro shots of some aphids that have moved into Bo's flower pot containing the little jalepeno plants he's trying to grow. As much as aphids are a pain, they are kind of cute when you see them close up. I thought it would be fun to attempt to take a few aphid photos too. I happened to come across two of them sharing a leaf.... I like to think that they're in love.

I don't know if they're in love, but they look to me like they're conspiring about something. Seen at this scale, maybe to take over the Earth?

Loved the pic of the waterfalls, it must be great to live so close and have a chance to walk that path to work every morning, especially if there are several paths to choose from.

Thats got to be one of the best walks to work!!!! A walk like that would certainly motivate me to walk more :)

Wow. That aphid photo is just excellent! Yeah, they're in love, or conspiring, as ParaScubaSailor said.

An evening at Pixel. They are always showing some movie or tv show on the wall. Tonight it was Futurama. We met up with Thomas and his boyfriend, Alfredo there for a couple of drinks. After that we were going to head up for the "Queer Ball" up on campus--an 80's vs. 90's dance party. But it started raining pretty hard so Bo and I ended up bailing out of that one and walked home instead...

Today went by in a blur and I honestly don't remember much other than work. This photo was taken in the car on the way back from a bit of shopping. I remember feeling very tired, so I'm sure I slept well that night.

It was a fabulously sunny day! On days like this, it's awesome to have BBQ's to go to...and today I had three! First up was the BBQ that Sam invited us to at the foot of the Cascadilla gorge trail. At the foot of the trail, the local 4-H club launched 2,800 little rubber duckies (each one sponsored by local residents) at the top of one of the waterfalls. From there, the duckies "raced" across Fall Creek to the finish line. It was the annual duck race!

From that BBQ, we went to one at my advisor's house. Finally, we finished off the night with a BBQ at Bernie's apartment, which was fun, even though I left in an irritated mood. Overall, it was an awesome day. A little taste of Spring and a nice preview of the type of weather I hope we'll see more consistently in the next few weeks!

I had an awful day. After the little scuffle last night, I totally thought that I was ok in the morning. But I was very wrong. I didn't feel like working. I didn't feel like talking to people. I felt everything was crumbling around me and I felt like crawling into a hole. I was pretty sad. When I got home, I was able to talk myself through things and I started feeling much better. I guess for me, sometimes I just a bit of time to get over things.

Felt much more relaxed than I did yesterday...Thank goodness! I took it easy today. Tried to catch up on a bit of work and try and get a bit of cleaning done around the house. Bo and I went grocery shopping and I ended up buying a container of salt-water taffy in celebration of the arrival of warmer weather. I love salt-water taffy. Very light in taste and not overly sweet. It's one of those things that I seem to crave when I'm in a good mood.

Eric, Andrew, and Tiffany stopped by to do some cooking this evening. Eric and I have known each other since our first year in grad school and have made it a tradition to get together to cook foods from different parts of the world. We often botch up at least one dish, so friends who dare to cook/eat with us must do so at their own risk. We've cooked food from a bunch of places such as India and Kenya. Yesterday, Tiffany suggested that we attempt to cook something either Aborigine, Viking food, Ancient Roman, or Ancient Greek...but it may have been a bit too ambitious for something so spontaneous. So instead we ended up cooking some falafel and Turkish French-Bread. Yummy!

Drove back to Maryland today. I'm staying there for 4 days, and I must say, that I just love any opportunity to leave the stressors of the university (although I did bring a bit of work with me). My bedroom in my parents' house pretty much looks the same as it always did, except they ended up buying a new, more comfortable bed than what I had growing up. My parents still work and my brother is still in high school, so it's still a pretty busy house. And even though we don't see each other for more than a couple of hours a day, there's always something nice about being in a place that is so familiar.

Yes, today's photo is of some person pushing another person down the street in a shopping cart. Actually, those are the housemates of one of my best friends, Jennie. I went into DC this evening to visit Jennie. We we went out to dinner at some Irish pub near the Pentagon and I ended up having some awesome fish and chips. Jennie's housemates ended up joining us later and we all hung out for a while. It was nice to be in the city again. Jennie and I have known each other since our freshman year of college and we've been keeping in touch ever since. I'm usually pretty bad at keeping in touch with people when I move away, but she's one of those people who will keep you in check! LOL!

I love my mom. And as much as I tell her that I love her, it feels like it's never enough! My mom, brother, cousins, and I went down to the local minor-league baseball stadium to watch another one of my cousins play a game of little league. It was a bit cold, but it was still a fun game.

I had to leave partway through the game to visit my other best friend, Marcie. We did a bit of BBQ-ing, watched a bit of tv, and played some board games.

In the evening, my brother and I went into DC to watch a show, which turned out to be awesome! We saw a new and upcoming experimental band called Le Loup, followed by a band called Jukebox the Ghost, and lastly, Exit Clov, which is a local band that plays pretty frequently. During part of the show, there was this 70-ish woman standing next to us, and she was totally rocking out. We later learned that she was the mother of the pianist that play for Juebox the Ghost. LOL. It was their very first EP release, so I guess she was there to support them.

Today is my last day in Maryland. It was pretty chill...went out to the shopping mall with my brother and parents and had dinner at a new grill to celebrate my parents' anniversary, my dad's upcoming birthday, and my own upcoming birthday (since I won't be in Maryland to celebrate). Unfortunately, the restaraunt sucked. The food turned out to be boring and the service was slow. Not to mention, I heard our waitress complaining about our tip as we were leaving--We only gave her a 10% tip, which in my opinion was still a generous amount for the crappy service she gave us. But despite all of this, the thought of a celebratory dinner was still nice, and it was certainly a nice way to end my trip.

Happy Anniversary

I got back to New York a little after noon today...in time to start celebrating the fact that Bo and I have been dating for 2 years now! We were friends for 2 years before we started dating, and our first date was actually a weekend in Ottawa, Canada. It was a spontaneous road trip, actually. We decided to take a random road trip. The original destination ended up actually being the Thousand Islands, but there wasn't too much going on at that time, so we simply decided to keep driving north and ended up at the Canadian border.

I really like this litte goofy picture. He always makes fun of my nose because it takes the shape of a typical Filipino nose, which means that it's pretty flat, and the cartilage that should form the bridge of the nose (you know, the part of the nose that someone's reading glasses sit on)--is pretty much sunken all the way into my face, if not totally non-existent...LOL. Therefore, if you press down on the part of my nose that does stick out of my face, it kinda looks like I don't have a nose at all!

Got into an awesome groove at the gym today! Unfortunately, I think I overdid it a bit on the leg press, to the point that one of my knees was pretty sore for the rest of the day. But I've gotten to the point where I've started running again, which is a nice feeling. I hate running, but the fact that I'm mobile enough to run again is very very comforting!

It was a fabulously fabulous day! If not for the fact that I was very productive at work, then certainly for the fact that the sun was out. Now that the weather has become consistently nice, it is time for me to introduce everyone to one of my babies: my inflatable raft. I inherited it from an adventurous friend who moved out of town a couple of years ago, and I've lived up to her spirit by making sure to have my share of adventures on the raft as well. When it's warm at night, I'll often take the raft out when the water is still and look at the stars. But today was the first time this year that my raft has felt the touch of water, so Bo and I figured we'd take her out at sunset. There was a nice breeze going, with relatively few boats around. I think we both could have easily fallen asleep on the water. But maybe we'll save that for another trip to the lake.

With infrared filter

This actually isn't the picture I took today. This is the photo I took today. The photo that I've posted was taken on the 7th, but I finally got around to post-processing it today. And even though it wasn't taken today, this photo still represents the highlight of my day: finally having a solid block of time to actually edit my photos. This photo diary has become tougher and tougher for me to maintain on a daily basis, but I'm very happy that I still have the habit of taking pictures each day. I don't like that lately i've been scrambling around to find something or someone to take a photo of, just to fulfill this requirement. A lot of my recent photos feel uninspired to me, but with classes ending, hopefully I can make more time to really think about my photography in a more passionate way again.

The photo I've posted for today was taken with an infrared filter. I don't have a camera that is converted for infrared photography and so the photo doesn't look quite the way it would look on a dedicated camera, but I think it's still pretty cool.
