This is my attempt to take a picture every day of 2007 which should represent my day in some way. I'm a Politics student at Hull University (UK) and im in my final year so 2007 will include some big events for me - graduation, moving to a new city and flat, starting a new job etc. So hopefully this will project will be a good account of an intersting year!!

Anyway enough talking here's the first picture.

Two frustrating days, and there is way too much sugar posted here in the last two days. Hope the technicians come up with a solution to the Canary wharf problem. We have two satellite systems in the bar, and because of all the tall trees around us, we have to run four 100m cables from the https://www.flickr.com/photos/robwallace/376571711/">satellite dishes at the back of our property (if Jissy's watching, the little one is Sky and the big one is DSTV from Randburg, showing all of the Rugby World Cup, as well as more football than Sky).
Simon-K 11 years ago
I wouldn't call yesterday frustrating really, it was definitely naff, but in a good way (if that makes sense)! I think it helps I was with some good mates - it was funny in the end.

But today was definitely frustrating, I think if we could get a dish the size of yours Rob that might solve the problem. The only other option I can see is to move either the house or canary wharf :)

NO PICTURE TODAY!

I just didn't have time to take a picture today. My boss kept me busy all day long, even my lunch was grabbed on the run. Even when I was at home I just didn't have time. I've spent all evening preparing for my conference in Brussels tomorrow!

Brussels Midi (Metro)

What an absolute complete waste of time!! I headed off to Brussels this morning looking forward to a conference I had been invited to (well actually my boss had been invited but I went in his place) at the European Parliament.

I got to Brussels a good few hours before the conference started so I had a look round the European quarter of the city, had something to eat. Then I headed off to the conference and thats where it all went wrong. They wouldn't let me in the building!!! Despite the fact that I had an official invite and numerous forms of ID they wouldn't let me in without someone to escort me to the room. But neither I or the reception desk could get in contact with anyone. I spent over an hour calling people, but no one would answer the phone. So after speaking to my boss I gave up and headed to the Train station!!!

So I travelled all the way to Brussels (at the cost of about £200) to sit in the reception of the European Parliament!!!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Ohhh nooooo That's terrible Simon!!!!

I hope it wasn't YOUR £200! Yikes!

Although you got a cool picture.....
Simon-K 11 years ago
Cheers Jallen! well the £200 was sort of mine. I had to pay for the trip up front, but will be claiming it back on expenses, so luckily I wont be out of pocket for too long.

That's a bummer! Bloody blithering Eurocrats. I would have headed to the Grand Place (not far from the EU Parliament) and got uproariously drunk on Belgian beer.
sunshinecity 11 years ago
wow that sure did suck!!! but yeah, i'd have done what RobW_ said... do some sightseeing, no?
Simon-K 11 years ago
@Rob and sunshine - Well my sense of direction is appalling and even with a map i'd have probably got lost heading to the Grand Place :) But I have to admit at the train station I did have a couple of beers, and I wasn't the only one! I was suprised just how cheap and freely available beer was, in some places it was just as cheap as a can of coke and the train station even had it in vending machines!!!
sunshinecity 11 years ago
well at least the trip wasn't a complete waste haah

Belgian Chocolates

Back in the office! Dealt with fallout from yesterday, my boss was pretty angry (luckily it wasn't my fault). But apart from that it was back to the usual working day. A guy who was working in our office temporarily left today, reducing staff numbers to just two again.

Bit of a stressful day at work today!! I ended up having to stay until about 8pm, which I really hate. By the time I'd got home it was too late to do anything so I just had a slice of toast and went to bed :)

Aw, those are sad days to me when all I do is work.. I was asked to do evening shifts and I refused because that means a week stolen from my life. Two a month. Grr! On the other hand, I might be losing the job cos of that ;)

Treeathalon

Quite a busy day today. My housemate, Holly, was running in the Treeathalon with her sister in Battersea park. The 5km run was to raise money for a charity which plants trees in cities. I'd promised to go and cheer them both along. I actually slept in so had to rush to try and get there in time. But never having been to Battersea I got lost os I got there literally as they were crossing the line!!

After the run we headed off to the Childrens Zoo in the park with Holly's two nephews, which was suprisingly good. After some lunch we made the obligatory trip to Hamleys toy store! Then to fnish the day it was Heroes Night on BBC :)

Open House - London Assembly

My boss called me first thing this morning, which is never a good sign! He asked me if I would be able to go to the office and do a few hours work!!! I couldn't really say no as it was sort of urgent, so my intitial reaction was that my day was ruined!! But I decided that I was still going to try and do as much as I'd palnned and just fit it around work. So I headed out straight away to go visit the London Asse, bly which is only open to the publc once a year. Its a great building and the inside is just amazing! As well as visiting the building there was a lot of stuff going on outside including a choir from all across London. You can see the rest of the pictures here

Then I went to work for about six hours!!! Then after I escaped the office I headed to the Thames festival which is a really big cultural event and has a sort of carnival and firework display. It was really good but annoyingly my camera battery died so I ddin;t get any pictures of hte festival!

I like "Fleetin' Eros" against a blue sky. And your picture from the London assembly is marvellous. Natasha got a number of similar ones last year. This time they went closer to home, to some Victorian orphanage in Wandsworth. Waiting for her to upload those.

Had a treat after work today - I went to see Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat on the West End. Holly's sister for a number of reasons had two tickets that she couldn't use so we got them. I wasn't sure whether or not i'd like it, and i'd heard a few bad reviews, but in the end it was great. Everyone seemed to enjoy it (apart from one boring family who sat their looking bored to death the whole time!). And when it was free that makes it that little bit better :) We bought Holly's sister a camel soft toy to say thanks :)

NO PICTURE TODAY

Two days this week without a picture - not good!! Today was a slightly odd one. I was attending a conference in London whic should have been really good but didn't turn out quite so well. I woke up to find I'd lost all hearing in my left ear!!! I was pretty sure it was just an ear infection so I didn't really do anything about it. But it made the conference a bit difficult! Its a very odd sensation!

Wow, that's strange. Maybe you better start learning sign language... and no, I can't help you, unless you want to only be able to sign with American deaf people.. hehe

Just kidding. That sounds freaky. (uh pun not intended)

Do get that checked out if it continues...
Simon-K Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Simon-K (member) 11 years ago
Hey Jallen - definitely very freaky! I don't come across many deaf American people, so American sign language wouldn't be much use :) But I got it checked out this morning, all sorted!
sunshinecity 11 years ago
I never realised that there were different sign languages, according to where you come from! Shouldn't there be something universal? Surely the cool thing about signing is that there's no language barrier, no accent problems... or so I would have thought!
Do explain further please, this really makes me curious to learn more!

Quit skipping photos! I quite enjoy your shots!

Put a smile on my face for most of the day. To make the day even better I went to see the Doctor during my lunch break and he fixed my ears :) I can now hear again.

Attack of the Jelly Babies!!

As today was relatively uneventful I thought I would follow the example of Sunshinecity and SSB and list 8 useless facts about myself

1) My twin brother and I were born only two minutes apart - and im the oldest :)
2) I used to be part of the Bradford Cathedral Choir (!)
3) I once sang for the Queen (sort of)
4) I have shaken the hand of the current UK Prime Minister (although he wasn't Prime Minister at the time)
5) As a child I knew the guy who went on to be runner up in the first ever Pop Idol
6) I don't like coffee but somehow end up drinking it all the time at work
7) I have travelled to nine different countries - I want to see even more
8) I probably drink too much diet coke!

Terracotta Army

A major new exhibit of the Chinese terracotta army recently opened at the British Museum. Advanced tickets sold really quickly and you can't book tickets for about three weeks. But they do keep 500 tickets for on the door sales every day. So this morning I headed out early and got to the Museum hoping to get a ticket, unfortunately so had loads of other people. The queue was longer than i've ever seen at the museum and there was no chance i'd get a ticket :( So I had a quick look round the rest of the museum and the giftshop and took a few photos. I wish I could claim that this picture is 100% mine, but unfortunately it isn't. Its one of the images the museum is using for its promotion. However i've done a lot of work in PS to get it like this.

After the museum I headed over to the other side of London to watch the Gorilla Run

Slightly odd experience today; I woke up and looked out the window and saw a van full of police parked right outside the house! No idea what they were doing though, they left the street without actually doing anything!

Holly

Well today I had the day off which so nice. I got to sleep in for hours, something I never get to do during the week :) But annoyingly the weather didn't realise it was my day off and it rained all day long, keeping me in the house all day long. The British Summer is officially over (if it ever really started).

Then late afternoon I headed off to start my Masters degree! I felt like I was back at school, bit of a weird feeling. But once I got in the building everything was fine. The evening went well and im looking forward to starting classes properly on monday.

This wasn't going to be my picture for today (I had some rainy pictures, but they were rubbish really) but my housemate asked me to take a picture for her work profile thing so I ended up taking a few. I'm really pleased with how this came out.

Hey Simon, that is really a great portrait of Holly, she should be really pleased to have that in her portfolio.

That Library building looks like something out of an Ayn Rand novel. (Had to include the link, because I don't think many on this list, except for Buns and I, have ever read Ayn Rand).
Dragonhide Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Dragonhide (member) 11 years ago
OMG- Simon! You took a kick butt picture of the housemate.. *hats off and bows* That is a masterpiece. I especially like her inky black eyes that sucks you in.

And your self portraits aren't bad at all either! They are fun to take- especially if you like taking people pictures and lack willing subjects. I've found that they keep you honest with yourself in a strange way.

Good stuff, as CG would say, good stuff.
Simon-K 11 years ago
Cheers Rob, to be honest she doesn't really like it, not because she doesn't think its good but because its of her - she's very self-conscious! And you're right without the link I wouldn't have known Ayn Rand

So today was my first class at Birkbeck. I wasn't sure what to expect, but despite getting lost on the way to the room (its a really complicated campus!) it went really well. The lecturers seem pretty good and come across as very friendly and the other students seem nice as well. Being a part time course in the evenings the backgrounds of the other students is very varied. There are students from all over the world (inclduing Spain, Ghana, Italy and Iraq) and people from differnet jobs including journalists, researchers, lawyers everything. I think its going to make for an interesting 2 years.

Simon, I must tell what an absolute joy it is to catch up on your diary! You can probably tell after I've visited by the number of favourites that pop up on your stream!

I thought it interesting that your selfie on the 26th kind of mirrored the Terracotta Warrior image...hmmm...

Sudden, inexplicable hearing loss, followed by a S.W.A.T. team staked out in front of your house? Perhaps you're some sort of Manchurian Candidate, hmmm? [and how does that tie in with the visiting Chinese relics?] =D

oh, and Rob, I'll have you know I read and enjoyed just about every one of Ayn Rand's novels--it was when I got to her epistemological expositions that I got turned off! [Will that grant me admission to your exclusive club with Buns? ;-) ]
