This is my attempt to take a picture every day of 2007 which should represent my day in some way. I'm a Politics student at Hull University (UK) and im in my final year so 2007 will include some big events for me - graduation, moving to a new city and flat, starting a new job etc. So hopefully this will project will be a good account of an intersting year!!

Anyway enough talking here's the first picture.

Voyage

I think someone tried to rob my house today!!!! I was sitting in my living room and I thought I heard a noise in the kitchen so I went to have a look, expecting it to be one of my housemates, and found this guy standing in my kitchen!!!!! To be honest i'm pretty sure he was off his face on drugs, but he looked a bit shocked to see me (although no where near as shocked as I was) and after a couple of seconds he ran out the back door! Gotta make sure everyone locks the back door when they leave from now on!

Whoa! I had that happen to me too once. The dude ran in the back door and up the stairs and was coming down them when I (foolishly) came to find out what the noise was. He *said* he was at the wrong house - looking for a friend. Probably just saw that everything I owned was crap!
karinga 11 years ago
Freeky! Good he was gone in a sec. One guy my family knew tried to enter our house (wasnt showing up before) after he started to use drugs. My mum would never let him in as she was sure he wanted to check out if there is sth to be stolen. It makes me so angry. I was most furious in my life when I had my wallet stolen. Grr!
Simon-K 11 years ago
@Meelifluous - Yeah this guy would have had the same thought had he actually got any further in the house, not a thing worth nicking here!
@Karinga - I know the feeling, its the fact that someone has come into my personal space that got me angry.

Well the university contacted all students today about the girl who was murdered last week. They confirmed what many had thought might be the case, the guy who was charged yesterday was also a student at the University!!! Its just so stupid that two lives have been ruined.

Spent the day working on a presentation and handing in my essays. The department has just introduced some new electronic submission system for essays (which doesn't work) and they ar enow saying that essays not submitted electronically on time will have 5% of the mark deducted. So I go to try and submit my essays and all seems well until I find out later that one didn't submit which means the department are going to knock marks off because of a mess-up with their own bloody system!!!!!!
karinga 11 years ago
Annoying! You should let the department know. They sure believe good students :p
Sorry to hear about something like that happening in your uni. We had one guy hang himself in uni few years ago because of not successful examination session :(

Blair Announces Resignation

Quite a big day here in the UK, the Prime Minister has announced he will leave office on the 27th June which means the next six weeks here will dominated by a leadership election which will also decide the next Prime Minister. While this might bore quite a lot of people, for a politico like me it will be really interesting.

Anyway after two classes this afternoon I have now officially finished all my teaching requirements for my degree!!! All I have left now is two exams, graduation seems to be getting closer and closer.

Graduate

Today was a very good day!! One of the best in a long time. I got a provisional mark for my dissertation and I got a 68 which i'm over the moon about. A first would have been nice but this is still great. Also spent most of the day with a group of my friends on campus doing nothing in particular :) Then one my friends had her graduation photos taken (to save time on the actual day) so we all tagged along and got some of our own photos. Then in the evening all the students on my course went out for a meal with our Supervisor as a sort of leaving do. Bit sad really, cause its the last time we'll all be together, but it was a great night with great company. After the meal most of us carried on the night and went to the local pub until closing. Great fun, but stupidly I forgot my camera so I didn't get any pictures
sunshinecity 11 years ago
wow, in Itayl we're so superstitious we'd never have our graduation pics taken before we actually graduate, sort of like jinxing it! LOL
Glad to hear about your results too!

As for Blair, how come he's leaving? Is his term legally officially over, or is he "retiring" for personal reasons? I don't really follow the news, sorry...

Simon-K 11 years ago
Yeah i'm a bit suspicious as well there's no way I'd get my pictures done early either!

As for Blair, he's sort of being pushed out by the party really, technically he's retiring,he could ahve carried on for another two years before having to be re-elected

Eurovision 2007

It was Eurovision today!!!!! Two of my friends, Holly and Ilona, threw a Eurovision party which was great fun. Its one of the cheesiest music events and in the UK we don't take it too seriously, and this is reflected in the scores. Tonight we came 2nd from bottom :) We'd have come last if it wasn't for Malta! This year there were some particularly cheesy performers, but the best (or worst depending on your point of view) was the Ukranian entry which was a middle-aged drag queen dressed in silver with a big star on their head!!! The party went on for ages and I drank a bit too much but it was such a great night.
karinga 11 years ago
Told you it's fun! :) We were not watching Eurovision yesterday because we were in a wedding celebration but followed the net for results anyway :) I like the picture of May 12, very Eurovision! I particularly like to have LT in the first plan!!! :p
Simon-K 11 years ago
Yep you were right it was great fun!! We were all given a country to support throughout the night and each time our country got votes we drank more and got progressively drunker :) I got Sweden, but somehow ended up with most of the badges at the end of the night (apart from the UK). Got absolutely no idea what i'm gonna do with them though!

Good cuppa tea

And so the revision begins!!! For the next four weeks my life will revolve around my final exams, luckily i've only got two but I'm not very good at exams so I get quite stressed in the run up. But luckily there are a few things coming up that will break the monotomy of revision - mainly my birthday and a visit from my family, and hopefully an opportunity to attend a debate with the candidates to be the next Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown Badge

Sorry for another political picture, but when you're stuck in the house all day long revising the only interesting thing to happen is the postman arriving to deliver the mail. So the highlight of my day (if you can even call it that!) was getting this badge, a birthday present for my brother (which I can't show because he's on Flickr) and as a nice suprise a letter from the University saying my user priviledges will be suspended in 10 days if I don't pay the massive fine I just accumulated!! Nice!

Anyway after a day of revision we had a few friends round for a takeaway and a chinwag, watched some decent TV. At the moment I'm regretting the Chinese as i'm feeling really sick, I probably ate too much but it was so nice :)

Labour Leadership Hustings

Well today was really interesting. I had the opportunity to attend one of a series of Labour Party Hustings as part of the Leadership and Deputy Leadership elections. This basically meant that I got to attend a series of speeches with the Prime Minister-Elect and all six Deputy Leadership candidates who (all bar one) are Cabinet Ministers.

It was really interesting, but what made that extra bit special was that as Gordon Brown (the PM-Elect) came into the room he stopped to talk to a few people, shake their hands that sort of stuff - and I was one of the lucky few!!! He didn't really say much just thanked us for coming but he was really nice and came across really well.

The picture is of the six deputy candidates and a journalist who moderated the event. Unfortunately I didn't have my good camera with me so most of my pictures didn't turn out!

Bird

Very boring day!! Revision has started again for my last ever exam at Hull and i'm already fed up. Didn't even get a decent picture - this is the only picture of this bird that came out half decent out of about 50!!!

I also got pretty annoyed with myself today. I've decided to buy a new lens for my camera with some of the money I got for my birthday. I had searched eBay and found one really cheap - so I bid on it really quickly. Stupidly though I hadn't properly read the item description, but when I did I realised it was actually an old lens that wouldn't actually work with my camera!!! So now unless the seller agrees to cancel my bid i'm gonna be stuck with a lens I can't use and be out of pocket :(

Waiting for a Bus

Well three weeks ago the university had a student murdered and this morning the Student's Union was victim to an armed robbery!!!! Apparantly three masked men armed with various weapons including an axe (!), attacked a cash machine as it was being re-filled and seriously injured two men (put them in hospital). The police have been all over Uni today and as a result most of the Union has been closed off!

Yet despite this my day was really boring and dominated by revision. I only really left the house to go to the shops!!! But tomorrow is going to be a better day - off to York for a sort of leaving do with a few friends.

York Trip 2

Had such a great day today. I ignored my revision all day and just relaxed. In the afternoon I went to York (a posh old town) with some of my closest friends at University as a sort of a leaving do. We had originally planned on going to the End of Year Ball (tomorrow) but the cost was massive and we are all really poor at the moment so we decided to do our own thing. We went to a traditional English Tea Room for a proper afternoon tea (Sandwiches, Tea, Scones with Jam and Cream) and it was fantastic. It might not sound like much but we had a fantastic time and it was a really nice way to end the year.

It was also an opportunity for me to use my new lens (which I specifically bought portraits) which I absolutely love. I love the results i'm getting from it and it was definitely worth the money. You can see the other shots from today here

Almost forgot, this is my good friend Holly, who i'm going to be living with when i'm back in London.

It could be you.....but it probably wont be!!

Well its almost finished, this time tomorrow i'll have finished my degree. Suffice to say i've therefore been revising most of today and am now completely bored!!

The lottery ticket is pretty representative of my other main concern at the moment. Basically i'm skint, I have almost no money. Which while in the long run wont be a problem (as i've already got my job lined up) in the short term I don't really know what i'm going to do. I've got to get together a deposit and first months rent for a flat by next week (which I'm desperately hoping my parents will end me) and then survive six weeks without any money coming in!!! So a lottery win would be quite nice at the moment :)

As you can already see I had my last exam today. It went pretty well (I think!) and I am so glad its all over - I can now start to concentrate on London :) After the exam two of my housemates (who I have lived with for the last three years) left Hull for good so it was a bit sad. We all went out for a meal before we left - taking loads of pictures of course. Then we all headed off back to our respective home towns. For me the trip home was not permanent though as I was only heading home on the way to flat hunting in London.

S8005190.JPG

So today I went down to London with my soon-to-be housemate Holly to look for our new flat. To save money we had to get the bus rather than the train which unfortunately meant leaving at the crack of dawn (about 4.30am!!!!!).

However it was not a very good day, none of the places were any good and some of there were absolutely disgusting (or in really dangerous areas!) so by the end of the day we felt a bit downhearted. Not to mention that having walked around London all day my feet were absolutely killing me!! I had blisters and everything. So deciding to go to the Globe Theatre (the rebuilt theatre of Shakespeare) and see the Merchant of Venice while standing up (for three hours) was probably a mistake. But it was a fantastic play and incredibly funny and the extra pain was worth it.
