This is my attempt to take a picture every day of 2007 which should represent my day in some way. I'm a Politics student at Hull University (UK) and im in my final year so 2007 will include some big events for me - graduation, moving to a new city and flat, starting a new job etc. So hopefully this will project will be a good account of an intersting year!!

Anyway enough talking here's the first picture.

Hey emil, you're welcome to the club, such as it is! Ayn Rand was big in the 50's, when I was at school, but I don't think she's been much heard of, outside the USA, for a couple of decades.

Best of luck with the course Simon, and the election! And you are too talented a photographer to miss days on your diary.
Simon-K 11 years ago
@Emil - Glad you liked what you read! Manchurian candidate hmmmm not too sure about that...hahaha!!

@Rob - Cheers Rob unfortunately if there is an election the next month could be hard to photograph, I will however try my best to keep up and may even have some pictures of the election (possibly!).

I'll 2nd what Rob said... I really enjoy your work. Keep it up!
RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
On the contrary - a photo diary of an election campaign will be stunning. You'll have to leave your big Canon at home, and use a pocket compact though.
Simon-K 11 years ago
@Sunshine - Cheers, ill try my best!

@Rob - Well the current speculation is that an election might not be happening - and I was getting all excited! If there is i'll be taking both my cameras, my small one predominantly for MDPD photos and my big one for "official" photos. My boss has asked me to take photos of certain events which should be a good opportunity!

Another very hectic day!!! We're still working on the assumption that an election will be called anytime soon. So we're having to do a lot of stuff including creating a new website! But in between all that today my boss had to speak at a conference that i'd done all the arrangements for (although the conference sponsor never thanked me!!). After that I had to head up to the constituency for 24 hours!!!

Spent most of the day in the constituency. Its always a very different atmosphere there and so different from London, but at the same time I always enjoy my trips there. Then it was back down to London and a few hours in the office before I could go home and just head straight for bed!

Don't you just love Fridays! I don't know about anyone else but my fridays are always a bit more laid back than the rest of the week. I get to finsih work two hours early, less work gets done and with the boss out of the office there's a calmer atmosphere. Well today was even more relaxed as a former colleague came to visit and the whole time she was in the office very little work actually got done!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Today was the BEST FRIDAY I ever had. hallelujah for Friday. No work, no running around like a headless chicken for two days, what more can I ask for?

This, the building picture is way cool.. I can imagine being in one of these rooms looking down at you wondering what you are doing....

Me again!

Bit of an annoying day today. My fridge has broken and to stop everything from going off or defrosting we've had to stuff a magazine under the door to keep it closed. So the landlord was supposed to be coming to the house today with a new fridge, but being a naff landlord she never showed! Bloody typical. So most of my day was wasted.

But tonight I went over to Canary Wharf with a few mates and we watched the rugby in one of the pubs! And I know you're probably fed up of self portraits by now but I didn't want to take the camera to the pub, so my ugly mug will just have to do!

Nelson Mandela

Well after all the speculation last week and preperations being made it has finally been announced that there won't be an election anytime soon. I'm a bit disappointed as I was quite looking forward to the campiagn, but it does work out for me in other ways. It means I won't have any problems with my Masters. Sadly I spent most of my day in the University library catching up on reading i'd not done during the week! And while I do my masters i'll probably have to do the same thing every week!

Didn't realise until today that London has two statues/sculptures of Nelson Mandela. After I left the library I headed over to the South Bank wnd while I was there I noticed this, bit tucked away to be honest, no wonder I've never seen it before.

I wish the weekends would last longer! I really wasn't ready to go back to work today. I was tired and just wanted to stay in bed all morning! Long day - work was pretty busy and I had to stay in the office all day. I didn't even get a break for lunch!! Then another class in the evening, followed by a nightmare journey. Every train I got on was either delayed, ended up being cancelled or diverted. So my journey home took almost double the normal length. Fun day!

London Lion

Crappy crappy day!!! Well four days late the landlord fnally had a new fridge for us today. The only problem is she has gone off somewhere for the week meaning I had to take time off work to wait for the delivery. And when it finally arrived she had ordered a tiny fridge. I mean the one we had before was small but this was tiny. Barely enough space to keep food for one person never mind two. I ended up having to throw food away from the old fridge because it wouldn't fit in the the new one.

Then when I finally got to work the day just really dragged and lots of things seemed to go wrong. I just hate days like today, and I hate moaning as well so I apologise. I cant wait for the weekend!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Oh geez Simon, it sounds like she got you a beer fridge, instead of a real one! Aw. That sucks :(

I'm looking forward to the weekend. The last two weeks has been ruled by Murphy and his stupid law.

Having a car- that's yet another thing for the bastard Murphy to screw around with... ;-) I so wish I had the option to use public transportation if I wanted to...

ps: it's funny that the particular air freshener you posted... its everywhere. You can't escape that air freshener no matter where you go in the world... That, McDonald's and Coca-Cola.
Simon-K 11 years ago
@ jallen - No need to tell me about that bastard Murphy - he's screwing up my whole week! I thought today was going to be a good day but I get to the office and there's a whole series of problems to deal with!!!!!

The good - Nelson Mandela again (between Waterloo and Westminster Bridge isn't he?), golden leaves on the ground, and the noble lion (also near Waterloo, I think); the bad - your landlady and the inadequate fridge saga; the ugly - no, there isn't anything ugly in your stream ;-)
Simon-K Posted 11 years ago. Edited by Simon-K (member) 11 years ago
Hey Rob, your right Mandela is between Waterloo and Westminster (near the Royal Festival Hall - sort of!) and the Lion is at the end of Westminster bridge. My landlord is definitely bad - I could use a number of words to describe her "bad" being perhaps the most polite I would choose!

Westminster Hall

Well I thought you guys might like to see some of the place where I work. Now photography is banned in most of the building and until recently I completely forgot there was one area where it was allowed. This is Westminster Hall and it is the oldest (and in my mind one of the best) parts of the Parliamentary Estate. Its now over 900 years old and was used for a number of differnet purposes including Royal Palace, Banqueting area and one King even used it as a tennis court! You can read more here

how wonderful! thanks for the insight!!

Looks big and unused. Nice place for a banquet though.
Simon-K 11 years ago
You're right Rob it is generally unused. Most recently it was used to host an exhibition which looked at the abolition of slavery, in the run up to Christmas its often used as location for the parliamentary gift shop. However its primary function is as a room for state type functions - so when the Queen Mother died she laid in state here (as have previous monarchs) and it has been used as a venue for foreign leaders to speak to both houses of parliament (both Mandela and Clinton have done so in the past). But saying that most of the time its empty

Hello Simon - cruising through and have to comment on the westminster hall black and white. I knew that photography was not allowed (something about photons and security...) and I really like what you did with the hall. A detail of the upper reaches of the loft would be wonderful if you are ever back through with your camera. Nicely done.

Imperial War Museum

After a very stressful week I had planned on doing absolutely nothing all day and it sort of worked out that way. Or at least the morning did, mainly because I chose to stay in bed. Even though I woke up about 10 I spent a good two hours reading and watching the Colbert Report online (we can't get it in the UK).

Then my flatmate decided to drag me out to the Imperial War Musuem. At first I wasn't particularly enthusisastic, but I actually quite enjoyed it. As a bit of entertainment for my flatmate my clumsiness returned. I got on the tube to head to the museum (but I didn't need to show my ticket) but didn't realise until I got to the other end that I'd left my travel card home. Luckily the ticket officer thought it was pretty funny and took pity on me. Then when in the museum I just left my wallet in the cafe without realising. It was there for at least half an hour before I realised. But it was still there when I went back.

Then it was back to home to watch the rugby and see England head to the World Cup Final!!!

The Autumn Drink of Choice

Well today I made what is becoming my regular sunday trip to the University library. So my day wasn't particularly interesting. On the way home I passed this empty bottle of vodka. I thought the contrast against the leaves made it an interesting photo. Unfortunately the area is just rond the corner from my house and pretty much every morning the number of empty bottles increases. I don't know why but the area seems to attract drunks!!

Back in the office today after two training days, so lots to catch up on, one or two small problems to deal with, but nothing too serious. Most of my day was taken up with a group of school children who were having a tour of parliament.

Mind the Gap

Good day today - went to the Tate Modern this morning to see the new exhibition in the Turbine Hall. Its called Shibboleth and its the big crack in the floor. Its supposed to represent the divide in society or something like that. As art i'm not convinced by it (although its certainly impressive and better to see in person) but for photos its great! Then I bought the second series of Bones on DVD which i'vebeen waiting to buy for ages. I then spent the rest of the day watching it :)

Then in the evening I watched England lose the Rugby World Cup to South Africa. Now while i'm disappointed we lost I think South Africa were in the end the better team and deserved to win - and to be honest no one really expected us to get this far!

I think New Zealand are going to be tough to beat on their home turf in four years time. By that stage, the South African team may be All Blacks also :-)

Nothing Like a Bit of Pomp and Ceremony to Bring Out the Crowds

I'm sure you're all probably fed up of parliament sqaure photos by now, but today i've got another. following the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue not long back today another statue was unveiled - this time of former Prime Minister Lloyd George. I'm not entirely sure why but they seemed to be making quite a big fuss around the square (not as big as Mandela but still big) there was a lot of police and there appeared to be Royal Guards on duty as well. I'm guessing some member of the Royal family or the PM was due to appear!

After work I got some very positive news. I can't remember if I've said it here but the heating in my house hasn't been working, and with the temperatures dropping in the last couple of weeks we could have really used it.
