Welcome

Spent the weekend at the cottage. It was quiet. No kids (boy, I miss the kids). Just me and my wife. We visited with friends, took a nice long canoe trip into Algonquin and chilled out. It was a perfect weekend.

Fozzy

Visited our good friends at their cottage. Someone rigged up a drive-in theater on their bay. We boated up (about 120 boats), tied up to our neighbor and watched Cars. It was very well done. And the stars were incredible.

I totally agree with Jallen and Ebil a little way above, such a pleasure catching up here after 3 weeks absence. Wonderful, clear, detailed flower macros, especially July 15, tranquil holiday pics, active kids, a stunned warbler, and a live mouse about to be trapped. Carry on, I'll be back..

@jallen: it was a great way to see a movie. The bugs aren't bad, the weather was perfect. It was cool to see about 150 boats in total bobbing around while the movie was projected onto a large screen.

New Car

That New Car Smell

Weee -- this is our new car. Picked it up just yesterday. Haven't named it yet. When I was young, people named their cars Betsy. I think we'll call her Arsenio, or Glory or Babe.

Tomorrow we pick up my son from camp. I can't wait to see him. It's only been two weeks, but it feels longer. My daughter will be at camp for all of August. We received a very sweet (and articulate) letter from her this week. She is having a great time -- and she misses us and she loves us -- the right things to say to mom and dad. Receiving a letter from camp is just as sweet as writing a letter to camp.

Clara and Kelly

Clara actually misbehaved. She peed on the floor -- which is out of character for her. We attributed it to missing the kids. We picked up Martin from camp this weekend (pictures to follow). Two weeks without the boy! I missed him so much.

Martin

We picked up Martin at camp this weekend. It was wonderful to see him. He gave us big, manly hugs. He had endless camp stories -- including his 5-day canoe trip through central Ontario. It was all very good. It was a sweet reunion.

My daughter comes home in 2 weeks. She is in the Student Counselor program at camp. She has written us very very sweet letters -- full of homesickness, kisses and camp stories.

Whitby Harbour

Whitby Harbour

This is an abandoned building down at the lake. I had to scale a fence to get inside. I climbed up one side and fell over the other. Not a very graceful entrance.

I don't resort to HDR very much - it has been way overused and almost looks cliché. It helps in some situations -- especially when shooting directly into the sun.

Very quiet at work. Most people seem to be on vacation. Which means I have a lot of extra time on my hands. That's not good, especially since I found a scrabble substitute on facebook.

Daily Diary

Dear Diary

OK -- August seems to be the hardest month to keep up with my diary. I'm busy with outside activities. We are at the cottage every weekend. Just not enough time to get out and take pictures. I gotta be more disciplined. Still missing my daughter. She's at camp for another 2 weeks. We will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary on Monday. Yikes. Our lives are flying by. I can still remember my wedding like it was yesterday. I can still remember the delicious smell of my daughter's breath the day we brought her home from the hospital. I remember every one of my son's hockey championships. This life goes by too quickly. We are blessed.

Radiotron

Chilly Day

Cool, windy day at the cottage, a good time to stay inside and disembowel an old radio.

Had our good buddy Zach at the cottage with Martin. The three of us went golfing on Saturday. We were all equally bad, so there was no shame or embarassment. We visited the driving range the next day to atone for our lousy Saturday.

Today is my 19th anniversary. We will celebrate on vacation next week by going to a lodge in Algonquin Park and eating an expensive meal and drinking a nice bottle of wine. And listen to the wolves howl. All very romantic.

Missed a day, just catching up. We drove to the cottage with our buddy Zach. On the way we stopped at the drive-in to watch the Simpsons Movie. My movie critic son panned it. I liked it -- I have my lower expectations in movies.

We drove behind a storm all the way to the drive-in. This picture probably looks better large.

Dropped our good buddy at his cottage on the way home. Discovered a new trick with my camera. If you turn it on its side in pano mode, you can shoot a nice wide, realistic panorama.

Letters from Camp

There is nothing nicer than letters from camp. My daughter is so sweet. She writes these lovely long rambling letters, detailing her days at camp. She has been a very busy girl. She's a very sweet girl. She was shadowing a senior counselor in the arts and crafts group. Only 3 more sleeps and we pick her up.

In The Gloaming

We picked up Brianna at camp. She had a *great* time! She said she realized what I loved about camp. She was excited and sad to say goodbye.

What is it about camp? In high-school, you never feel comfortable (at least that was my experience). You're never sure how to act or how to fit in. At camp, you accept that you can act positive and respectfully. This becomes your default behaviour. Everything else flows from that. It is beautiful.

House of Zen

Okay -- it takes a certain type of person to pour so much effort into an outhouse. I'm proud of my anal retentive ways. I started our little house last year. I painted it this week. Next time I'm up I will finish the interior.

There's something Zen-like about this little structure. I hate painting, so I turned it into a game - the brush was my pen, the paint I applied gave my little building definition. Kinda Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance meets The Karate Kid.

Well it is a little early. Most of the trees were still in there summer best. A few of them wore hints of autumn. Our summers are blissful but fleeting.

That outhouse pretty much sums up our cottage. A lot of effort goes into something that will be used infrequently. My son wanted to put a small television up in the corner (with a remote of course). We're concerned he may move in and never come out :)

Thank-you -- it's a lovely spot. The sunsets are equally pretty. mmm butter
