Soft and Warm, Continuing

We had a huge downpour here. Nothing nicer than warm spring rains. Except when it hails and there are tornado warnings. Nothing serious happened, just the soft, spring rain.

There but for the grace of you go I.

The Cross

I have a confession: I am not religious. But I like the symbols. My son had his confirmation yesterday. It was nice and traditional.

My mother took us to a Pentecostal church when we were young - with a bunch of wild boys on her hands we needed religion, else we were going to hell or prison.

The preacher would chew gum and his suit had been pressed too many times.

I have another confession: I chew gum in church.
Dragonhide 11 years ago
LOL!

Love your commentary, man.

That is definitely a nice picture. I like the symbols and the historical attachment to days long bygone.. I think thats cool.

Next week I go to Orlando for a conference. It will be wall-to-wall swag and heavy-pressured sales. And open bars, buffets and hardware types with huge bellies and zero-social skills. It will be a hoot. Speakin' of which, Hootie and the Blowfish (?) will be playing at the conference.

Last year the Bare Naked Ladies played -- great Canadian band ... that was a party.

Dot

The Aunt

Through the miracle of the internets, I am posting tomorrow's picture today.
I will be on a plane bound for Orlando for a week of hot and heavy conferencing. Networking, swagging, eating and schmoozing.

Dorothy (Dot) is a great old soul. She is my dad's twin. She is the good twin; my dad ...well he was what he was.

She's had a challenging life, but she's full of good humor and lots of loving respect. She shares family memories and always has nice things to say about my mother and my family. She told me how my mother burnt one of her breasts on a toaster while breast-feeding my infant brother -- man you can't make this stuff up!

Our family has an over-allotment of dysfunction. Dot's a speck of sanity in an ocean of crazy.

The Conference

So I spent the week in Orlando with 8,000 other geeks. The buffet was always open, the sessions were good, open bars and plenty of evening activities to ensure a week of constant hang overs.

Woofstock

Woofstock 2007

Went to downtown Toronto today. My wife and I manned a booth to raise funds for the Pugalug Rescue group. They're a group of volunteers who take pugs from a variety of challenging situations, foster and adopt them into good homes.

Some pugs are saved from puppy mills. Some are given up because the family can't care for their cherished pug anymore.

Our pug, Clara, was a rescue from a home where the owner developed life-threatening allergies. She was heart-broken when she had to give her up. But we gave her a loving home.

Clara's original owner is Christine Tier. She's a lovely woman, with tons of talent.

I gotta admit my little P&S has a lot of features -- the macro is my favourite. Even more so than the 12x zoom. I love those wide-angle landscape shots, but I also adore my macros. I know that when I graduate to an SLR, I will probably rack up debt buying lenses.

Baseball Pano

Baseball Panorama

This is close to Children's Arena in Oshawa. There is a floral park beside the arena. The peonies are in full bloom -- they are massive, gaudy and slutty. Some blooms are bigger than my head.

The sun at this time of year reminds me of the quality of light you see in Southern California. There is something special about that kind of light. Especially when viewed from the coastal highway (HWY 1 to the locals). One of my favorite memories is speeding down highway 1 in a rented convertible, the Pacific Ocean perilously close to the road. It was amazing. I will visit there again one day. Until then I visit www.californiacoastline.org/ to get a virtual view.
I love the California light and coastline too. My favorite though is the light of the Mediterranean and the western coast of Corsica--very like Big Sur.

Peonies! I can smell their fragrance across the ocean.

So there's this field of red boxes north of my home. Five red phone booths sitting in a field decaying. I've been recording their demise for the last 3 years (the set is here). Locally Grown

With all due respect to my Californian diarists, I love my locally grown fruit. The strawberries are soft and juicy and taste so much better than the ones trucked in from Southern California.

We spent the weekend up at the cottage. Beautiful weather, we put out the swim raft and tackled a bunch of jobs. Of course we swam and completely enjoyed the quart of blood we donated to the mosquitoes. It was a lovely weekend.

And I am totally screwing the pooch today. This is during work hours and I don't really care.

I was asked for permission to place one of my flickr pictures in a German magazine. Great. The magazine is a little like Maxim. My picture is buried in the back of the magazine while a topless Courtney Love graces the cover (I am so *not* complaining). She looks great -- I think her shoot was pre-surgical. So she looked less constructed, more organic.
