I talked to my Daughter today. She is traveling to Brussels tomorrow, where she will catch a train to London. She will spend two days in London before flying home on Saturday.

This is a small conservation area down by the lake in my hometown.

I wonder if I'm attracted to some images because of my left-handedness (and inherent right-brainedness)? This image sucked when the words were arranged in the right order. But it appeals to me turned upside down. I wonder if I'm kind of screwy or a little tweaked.

I found this looking down on the ground seeking my fortune. Still looking.

She had to play her piano recital for the Kiwanis festival and placed third. We're very proud.

Patty Griffin

My wife and I went to see Patty Griffin last night. She played at a nice old church, Trinity St Pau's. She has a beautiful voice and a wonderful set of songs. She only sang 3 songs I recognized; I will have to expand my collection.
I haven't been to this area of Toronto for a long time. There is a lot going on. The new addition the museum looks pretty neat. It's under construction, it looks pretty funky (www.rom.on.ca/)

Bloor & Spadina - Toronto, out Trinity St Paul's window

Spadina & Bloor - Toronto Ontario

Looking out the window at Trinity St. Paul's church. It's a lovely building, it reeks of old Toronto money and old Toronto Anglicism, where cops would rap your knuckles if they saw you playing on Sunday. Shopping on Sundays was permitted sometime in the 80s. And there was a time when establishments were not allowed to serve drinks. Hence the name Toronto the Good.

It's pretty much anything goes now. Toronto is a beautiful vibrant city with a hugely diverse population. Which means there is an obscene amount of eating choices in the city. We went out for dinner on Monday and I ate an Israeli salad with tabbouleh and pitas. It was yummy.

The city still holds onto its charms and traditions -- you will see a lot of streetcars and beautiful architecture.

Toronto has a rich literary tradition as well -- many fine authors live and toil here; like Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Yann Martel and others.

Not to sound like a travel brochure, we've had our share of serial killers and scares.

It is a lovely city, especially at this time of the year.

Looks even lovelier through your lens, Яick! Nice shot of Patty.
My fondness for Canada keeps growing, through photos I see here and from listening to CBC Radio 3 podcasts (I know Patty's not Canadienne, but she gave me a music segue), and another podcast out of St. John, NS

ebilflindas I'm a huge fan of the CBC. Thanks for the links! I will give them a listen (and small correction, St. John is in New Brunswick). I spent much of my childhood in NB, which is next to Maine. Patty Griffin was born in Maine -- how's that for a segue? She's was born 3 years earlier than me and one border away :)

My Whorish Flower

Dig My Whorish, Colourful Flower

I don't do anger well.

And I don't usually do the flower thing in my photostream. It just invites a lot of those animated icons. Those animated icons anger me. I hate the groups they represent. I hate the fact that they're using my pretty pictures to promote their spammy little groups. I hate that people put perfectly mediocre pictures in these groups and these mediocre pictures show up in explore.

Last night I flipped off another flickr-er because she was abusing explore. I regret the tone of the conversation, but her response was way over the top. Here's the background:

1) I notice this picture on explore -- it truly does not belong on the front page of explore (In my humble opinion)

2) I click the picture and see that she's spammed millions of commenting and favouriting groups with her picture.

3) Her picture is in these spammy groups -- whose sole purpose is to get your picture on explore, nudging out truly great pictures in the process. You know the groups, add one picture favourite or comment on the 5 previous pictures.

4) She is marvelling over the number of comments and favourites -- over 3 pages of comments and 250 favourites -- for such a shitty little picture!

I lose it. Here is a capture of the conversation that followed:

You're amazed at the amount of favs? You added it to every "must favorite", "must comment" group on flickr, what is so surprising about that?
You created a marginal picture that never would have made it to explore without whoring it in these commenting/favoriting groups.

rick, you are mid 40, two children and an impotent, aren't ya? :)
i've just came back from your page and honestly - try adding your shots to as many groups as possible AND still I'm not sure your photos will drown in favs...in fact the only thing that can drown somewhere is you in the ontario lake :*

Attack me, that's fine. My point stands: this would never have made it explore without promoting it to fav'ing/commenting groups.

You're hacking explore pure and simple.

Impotently yours -- Rick

you make me laugh :)
who gives a shit about explore? :)) take it away from me if that will calms you down
what you doing on my page if you don't like it?

Yes it was childish of me to engage this person. Someone more respectful would have let it pass. But when I see some of the talented photographers on flickr without even a hint of attention; putting out such wonderful pictures and these explore-whores putting out their spammy crappy pictures and having them show up on explore, it infuriates me!

And her drowning reference? I think I pissed off a bunny boiler.

I will atone for my sins -- somehow. More flowers?

Yikes that's a lot of anger under my pretty flower, but I feel better now.

5/07 AMEN... I feel the same way. I don't understand the fun of whoring groups. I guess it COULD be juvenile fun hacking explore, but that is not my cup of tea. I rather my shit make explore cause it's good :)

It does annoy me to see crap make it on explore.

Burleigh falls looks great- sort of reminds me of where I backpacked the past weekend.

And.. CONGRATS on the exhibit!!! That is something to be proud of.

@Jallen: Re 05/07 -- I feel a little guilty that I harrassed this person. I guess I was PMSing. My feelings remain; it's sad that there are good photographers getting no attention, while marginal photographers gain all sorts of attention by gaming explore.

Peter Bowers is an amazing photographer:
Very low key. Always willing to share advice and give you positive comments. He is exactly the opposite of what I was describing. Wanna bet his beautiful picture is not even in the top 10 pictures tomorrow?

As for Burleigh Falls, it is one of my favourite places on earth. We don't have mountains like Colorado or the beautiful Pacific shores in Oregon and California. But we have these wonderful little pockets of beauty -- like Burleigh Falls and all the wonderful pictures in Peter's photostream.

(thanks for the kind words)!
Dragonhide 11 years ago
Yeah I know what you're saying... We don't have those huge stand-outs like the coastline or big mountains.. So I have to also look for pockets of beauty as well :)

Back when I was younger, I was all "backpack in missouri? pshaw. what a laugh" falsely thinking there wasn't much to see here except trees and fields. Fortunately I proved to myself how wrong I was. There's even Wilderness Areas right here in Missouri, something I never knew until recently. Bell Mountain Wilderness Area is one of my favorite spots, despite having no water. Gotta bring all the water you need to the top!

Anyway I'm already plotting my next escape....
