Whitby Harbour

Whitby Harbour

Cold day up here in the Great White North. Busy week in our household, my son celebrates his 14th birthday tomorrow. After his birthday, we can decorate the house and put up the tree. We keep a clean separation between Christmas and birthdays.

Happy Birthday Martin

Today was my best buddy's birthday. Martin is 14 years old! Wow does this life go fast.

Some things of note:

Martin contracted what we thought was Bell's Palsy at age 5. You can see it in his youngest picture. We thought it was permanent; we were resigned to him being paralyzed on one side of his face. He recovered. Only to contract it again at 6 years of age. It was a little harrowing. But it certainly steeled us against childhood diseases. He is all better and healthier than a purebred horse.

The day he wore the turtle-neck was the day my brother-in-law died. Oy the things you remember. We were so focused on Kelly's brother that we forgot about picture day. Our wonderful sitter, stepped in and tidied both Martin and Brianna up.

In the same turtle-neck picture he is sporting stitches. He took a hockey stick to the eyebrow. Requiring 6 stitches. He struggled and railed against the doctor and nurses so much that he had to be medically restrained to finish the procedure. We tease him about it to this day.

This is his first year in high school and he is trying very hard. He is committed to getting good marks. He can't stand seeing his sister on the honor roll! Haha -- who'd a thunk sibling rivalry could work for good and not evil!

He's a great kid.

Santa Pug

Nothing excites a little pug more than sitting on Santa's knee.

This is Cody and me at the Pugalug Pug Rescue's Santa Pug. It is a very good cause -- older pugs need a lot of medical attention. So we raise funds to lift the burden from people who can't afford to pay for their aging pugs medical bills. www.pugalug.com

I like your GIF showing him growing up.. those that you do are always so cool... and it's a sobering reminder of my own boy who is 7 now... they do grow too dang fast.

Putting up the Tree

Putting up the Tree

I missed 2 whole diary days. The shame.

We put up the tree today. Kelly and Martin's birthday have passed. We're into the Christmas season.

Ryan Adams keeps going through my head:

We burned the cotton fields
down in the valley
and ended up with nothing but scars.
The scars became the lessons
that we gave to our children
after the war.

Thinking of my sister. This song always comes to mind. Her scars our lessons.

Love the subtle introspection that runs through your diary, Яick.
Yeah Martin! Always good when your goals/assists are greater than your PIM!

Disco [1]

Disco Balls and Flashlight

Trying to stay positive while completely seasonally affected.

Raging at the weather is like Ahab raging at the whale, but I hope this weather passes. I despise that I haven't seen the sun in days. I'm seasonally affected and, fortunately, I don't own any weapons (like harpoons).

Had a taste of that the past weekend... Lots of snow & ice. Already melting. I like the snowy weather, but it certainly gets very old after too long.. (Lived in Minnesota for two winters... brrrrr)

My Favourites

My Favourites from 2007

Trying to pick my favourite over the last year.

I am trying hard to improve my photography. Trying to understand composition, lighting. The importance of horizontal and diagonal lines. How to guide a viewer's eye through a photograph. Trying to come up with compelling subjects. Restraining my use of Photoshop and Photomatix. All that good stuff. I used this group as a project to help me improve. The biggest lesson I can take from this group is developing the habit of carrying my camera with me at all times. And forcing me to take many pictures. That is key to good photography (in my amatuer-ish humble opinion).

But it isn't all.

I have been fortunate to receive a lot of advice and mentoring from a gentleman named Peter Bowers. One piece of advice he gave me, was to take many pictures, but become ruthless in what you make public. He has about 150 pictures visible to the public. He takes thousands of pictures at a time - for instance on his canoe trips. He narrows his selection down to a couple. If he feels these are worthy he will publish them.

Next year I resolve to be more selective as to what I make public. This exercise in taking a photograph a day (which I didn't quite achieve), has helped me capture a lot of images, now I have to take it further and develop the discipline to identify suitable photographs. I will keep my day-to-day images available to friends and family -- I consider you my friend/family if you read this). My intent is to be ruthlessly selective in the images I make public next year.

I also want to create images that inherently tell a story. Lane Hartwell has this wonderful ability to relate a story in each photograph she posts. She is selective and has an amazing eye for capturing personality and telling stories with her pictures. So does Sandra. This is what I aspire to be.

I want to continue to improve my technical abilities -- including post-processing with Photoshop, et al. I want to select my images from thousands of my candidates. Most of all, I want my stories to be heard over the chatter of beautiful sunsets and all the lovely pictures you see every day on flickr.

To all of you that have stopped by and offered me encouragement and gave me kindness, I love you all. I have been blessed with your friendship and I look forward to watching you grow over the coming years. I have built some wonderful friendships and shared many laughs with you. I have shared and shed tears as well -- some private moments that made me more spiritual. I'm grateful for those moments. And I'm grateful that this group brought you all into my life.

I chose this as my favourite for the year. Because it depicts my daughter and suggests a story. It also displays the technical improvements I've made during my time on flickr. I was restrained in my use of photoshop. Photoshop should never obscure the story you are trying to tell. Nor should fancy effects like HDR or Lomo-fying or texturizing -- all things I'm unashamedly guilty of over-using in the past.

Brianna ~ Library

My diary runs until January 10th, but I want to thank you for your kind words of encouragement, your friendship and I look forward to being inspired by all of you in the coming years.

God Bless.
ebilflindas 11 years ago

Wow, Rick, I'm finishing off reviewing some special 2007 diaries before plunging into the 2008 versions, and I'm so glad I stopped by this one. That is some fabulous advice you gave back on December 22, which I am going to chew over, and should implement myself. Some fabulous photos you posted in that mosaic also, which I have saved in a separate tab to come back and browse through tomorrow.

I didn't know your stream before last year, didn't know your diary either until Glory directed me to it in May or so, but your care and desire to improve shows in your work, and I will certainly continue to follow you in 2008. All the best!
