Ah, thanks for the explanation. Of course, I suppose PiM is better than PiP (penalty in punches) or PiPB (penalty in pints of blood)!

I have a love-hate relationship with graffiti. Some of it can be almost art (like this), but some of it can be a symbol of decay (nasty words, gang symbols, etc.). Unfortunately, it's the second kind that we see more of in Des Moines.

Unfortunately this is an example of bad graffiti. Done properly it is beautiful. This was a beautifully decaying bridge. Hopefully this will fade in time.

Autumn Mosaic

We went looking for a special pumpkin on Saturday. We are volunteering at a fund-raiser for our favourite pug rescue group: Pugalug.com

We were looking for a pumpkin big enough to hold a pug. We want to take pictures of the pug in a pumpkin and sell the pictures. We've had a bit of a drought up here. The harvest was quite good, but the pumpkins were smaller than normal. Certainly not big enough for a large pug.

Burleigh Falls

What a beautiful day. We ventured up north to close the cottage, bring the boat in and get ready for a long winter. It was a perfect day. The trees are at their peak. .The weather warm and delicious. The air clean, skies were a special northern Ontario blue.

The boat is in need of repair. That's gonna cost us dearly. Even that wasn't enough to spoil a perfect fall day.

OK -- technically not taken today, but post-processed today. I like to revisit some of my old images, just to see if I've missed anything. This shot was from a set I took in August.

Went to see Stuart Mclean and the Vinyl Café tonight. Imagine a concert of nothing but story-telling. Imagine old-time radio. It was quite wonderful.

Had to miss most of my son's hockey-game. They won 4-2. Martin got a hat-trick.

Pug-o-we'en 2007 [13]

Pug-o-we'en

We spent a good part of our Sunday volunteering for an annual fundraiser for a pug rescue group. I manned the clipboard by the photobooth. Kelly sold raffle tickets. It was amazing fun. These people do great work. Pugs can be a financial drain as they age. The group is setting up a hospice for pugs that cannot be placed in a foster home due to the financial burden of their medical problems. The group is designating homes that will adopt elderly or sick pugs and supporting them financially through donations and events like pug-o-we'en. A very good cause. www.pugalug.com

And the were some great costumes.

Яick Harris says:

Tripping. The refs call everything at this time of the year, regardless of how marginal it was. Technically he was going for the puck and his stick got tangled in the other player's legs. So he was called for it. He skated off without saying anything and served his two minutes like a man. That says a lot about Martin and his sense of fair play.

(I'm the birdman, Rob:)

Not entirely sold on the name, but that's democracy for you (the group voted on the name). We're a group of urban explorin' photographers. We're planning an exhibition later this month, with ambitions to become a featured exhibit in next year's CONTACT exhibition. We take photographs which ties into the theme planned for next year. And we solve crimes.

I have to come up with 3 images for my exhibit at the Charlotte Room. I'm going with rust subjects in a square format.

Rochester Subway

Rochester Subway

I'm 49, skinny, kinda short and lack charisma. Which disqualifies me for my one life-time ambition, guitar god. I've discovered a new ambition, urban explorer.

Slogging through the mud, dust and dark spaces was a revelation. I walked two miles along an abandoned subway in Rochester NY. It was amazing. There were plenty of photo opportunities, great company and my first true urban exploration. I must do this again.

It's in the heart of downtown Rochester. Since it's a university town, I felt safe. We didn't encounter anyone living down there, but there was plenty of evidence (like empty bottles and abandoned couches and chairs).

The graffiti was amazing. I'm sure the place draws artists from all over the states. There was some beautiful work down there.

The streets above were clean and quite nice. It's a strange 'underworld'. Rochester is a nice looking city. The downtown has beautiful architecture -- some of it dating back to the 20s. It is quite a nice place. The subway added a lot of character to the place. I recommend it. Since we were in a large group (approx. 40), I didn't feel unsafe. We were properly outfitted with construction boots and flashlights. Some people wore face masks (smart for some explorations where asbestos might be present), and carried Coleman lamps.

I'm looking forward to exploring old steel mills in Buffalo. I've seen beautiful pictures of Bethlehem Steel. Definitely not as safe as Rochester, but a fascinating place with plenty of good subjects.

Here is some more information on the subway:

Thanks Tim -- I agree, it looks better as a set on black.

thanks Rob -- some speculated that the subway fell out of favor, because it was never extended to the suburbs (too costly). Which is too bad.
There seems to be a history of bad experiences with transportation in Rochester. Recently they set up a ferry to travel from Rochester to Toronto. It would have reduced the trip from 5 hours to 1-1/2 hours. Unfortunately it wasn't viable. Toronto really didn't promote it. I guess they were in competition for Rochester as a destination. It was sad and short-sighted on Toronto's part.
Toronto has a vibrant theater scene (as you are aware) that would have benefited from more traffic from New York.

@eb: I hear ya -- my dad had an awful, dark side. He did have a funny sunny side. Complex man he was.

@Rob: it was a statement against the Province of New Brunswick -- kind of like holding a grudge against the raging tide. It was to provoke a reaction. It worked:)

Broccoli

Kelly's Birthday

I cooked dinner tonight -- of course I had to take pictures. We had yams, potatoes, a wonderful Chinese soy soup (leftovers, yum), pork chops (no thanks) and broccoli.

What she got:

» an iPod shuffle -- filled with a selection of songs (for the gym)
» a box of white chocolates
» a gift certificate
» I repaired our 15th anniversary ring

(it's her 42nd birthday)

» Chris Isaak (multiple times for multiples)
» XTC - Senses Working Overtime
» David Bowie - Heroes
» John Fogarty - Somewhere Call My Name (beautiful song)
» Tragically Hip - Ahead by a Century (Canadian content)
» George Michaels - Freedom (pure foreplay)
» Fleetwood Mac - Never Going Back Again
» Annie Lennox - Why
» Bruce Springsteen -Jersey Girl
» The Cure - Friday, I'm in Love
» The Violent Femmes - Faith

Feel free to use the same songs to seduce your wife on her 42nd birthday

Yup, you're a cool cat, Rick :)

Outstanding posts as usual... and congrats on the exhibit! The Shadow Collective sounds right up my alley... But I'm too nervous to venture into shadowy corners of an Urban area... Rural areas, I'm OK but there's crazies in the city!>/i>

What a cool group. Seems like it would benefit them to use meetup.com to organize events... That is how I keep up with the St. Louis photography activities.

Anyway, to borrow CG's words GOOD STUFF, Rick.
