Day one and I almost forgot to take a picture. This is my painfully ugly shower curtain. It fits in with my ugly bathroom. Yes, the thing on the bottom is my tub. What were they thinking when they picked that color?

They closed our building today at 3pm. Since we are travel we were told that we had to stay until 4pm. Eventually we were told that those who live in New Jersey or Long Island can leave, but they asked the ones who live in the city to stay. I took advantage and fled at 330p..

The commute was hellishly long. Not only did my train make every stop but it went at a snail’s pace. I kept myself amused by taking pictures out the window, reading, and playing games on my phone. I arrived at my station to find the trees and streets covered with ice. Very pretty! I was even able to make it home without slipping. No small task since I am a klutz. I inherited the “trip on air” gene from my mother and grandmother.

Today’s picture is Michele. She is one of my coworkers. We usually take the bus to Penn Station together after work. It was her plum I posted on the 8th. She is one of the coworkers encouraging me with this project so she gets the honor of being my picture of the day.

Ah, the Philly trip! I actually do want to go back to stay at the Loews. I sell more of that hotel than the Four Seasons where I stayed. Unfortunately it wont be for a while. I am trying to go to DC this weekend and I am suppose to go to Madrid in March. If I do return it wont be until the summer or fall.

What about NYC? It is just up the block from you.

I didn't know it was catchy. I could be dangerous to be around.

I was very lazy with my picture taking today. Snapped the tv just before midnight.

It looks like my trip to DC is going to fall through. I had called my friend to tell him that I was most likely not coming. He is encouraging me to do what I can to make it. I like to think it is for the pleasure of my company not for the stack of cds I promised to bring him.

@ CollardGreens - I want one of those hats but I wouldn't be able to pull it off. Unfortunately I had to bow out of the Madrid trip. I have too much going on in March, I had to face facts that I don't have the time to spend a weekend in Spain. Maybe next time.

@ AliThinks - Jim Carey is there by default. I am not a huge fan. It was just a matter of timing that he is my pic of the day. It was late, I was on the phone, and I had to do shoot something.

Canceled trips seem to be a theme this week. My trip to DC this weekend fell through. It went wrong on my end. There is always next time. The cds will be eventually sent in a little care package.

@Jissy - You would think we would have the snow thing down pat by now. Getting inspired is harder than I thought when I first statred this, but I am trying..

Icky dirty snow

I was stuck at the office doing things that should have been done earlier in the day but my clients didn't wake up until late in the afternoon. Pissed of that my weekend trip fell through. A bad end to a crummy week (work wise mostly).

I knew enough that I wasn't going to take a picture once I got home so I snapped a few at the bus stop. This one just fit my mood.

Ugh. Dirty snow is so depressing. And cigarette butts are the icing on the cake. Do people think that cigarette butts get picked up by someone else? A magical butt fairy? Yep, they're stinky in your pocket, but they're stinky in your mouth too. And your hands. (please note this isn't an anti-smoker rant, just a dump-your-butts-smoker rant.) OK. Done.

In a much better mood today. It warmed up melting some of the snow but droping temps formed the melted snow into sheets of ice that covered the sidewalks. I kept my stroll tonight to the side streets where I could walk in the road, instead of risking a fall on the sidewalk.

Except for picking up a few fresh things here and there, I haven't done a full grocery shopping since Christmas Eve, I have been lazy and my pantry is getting bare,

Today was the day! I got dressed and headed out. The first stop was the train station to get a metro card for the coming week. Wrong move... I ended up hopping on a train into the city.

I called a friend to see if she wanted to meet for a late lunch, but got voice mail. Oh well. I went for a walk instead. I did get some fruit. I guess that counts.

Living near (and working in) NYC, I have accepted the fact that it isn't a question of if another terrorist attack will happen. It is a question of when and how it will happen. I haven’t let it change the way I live. If you do they win.

A few years after the attack I had a horrible dream, it was so realistic that I turned on CNN as soon as I woke up to make sure it wasn’t true. The dream took place by the Flatiron Building. As you can see all is well there.

msspider66 11 years ago
@ osbornb - me too

@ AllanThinks - As far as location goes, Long Island isnot all bad. Close to the city and within.mins to the ocean. I just have issues with suburbia.

I am about a hour from Penn Station by train. Since I don't drive it is sometimes easier to hop on the train (the station is a 5 min walk) to go into the city to do my running around. It helps that I have a monthly ticket.

Sadly, there are so many Long Islanders who don't take advantage of the location and rarely go into the city. Years ago I use to be one. Now I feel more at home there than I do where I live.

@eelend - Thanks. Voicemail isn't the greatest but it is better than not having any. Remember when we actually had to speak to a person to leave a message? The horror!

23 feb 2007

Yes, I know the lottery is nothing more than a tax on the poor. Our office does lottery pools when the jackpot is high. I couldn't let them win without me, could I?

I had some time to kill at Penn Station so I paid a little more tax and picked up a few more tickets. The174 Million would be more fun if it was just mine. Yup, I am greedy.

I think I won $2, At least I enjoyed planning how to spend my nonexistant windfall.

msspider66 11 years ago
@ satrina* - I am hoping some well deserving person won the jackpot so I don't have to play again for a while. Our office only plays when it is high, and I buy my own tickets less often.

The only lottery tickets I buy frequently are scratch offs. I get them for my aunt Kathie who is in a nursing home. She enjoys them and my niece Kayla (5 yrs old) does the scratching for her.

Today was my friend Patty's mom's 90th birthday. Her name is Dotty. We were going to take her out to lunch but she didn't feel up to it. Patty and I ran so errands early in the afternoon. On our way back we stopped at Patty's house so I could visit a bit with her mom and give her some purple tulips.

Dotty is wonderful. She remembers everything and has a great sense of humor. Even though she is hard of hearing and I tend to speak rather softly, we easily can chatter up a storm for hours. I am happy I was able to spend time with her on her birthday.

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me. But when she takes me up on the raincheck for lunch I will ask if I can take her picture.

I was able to grab my camera when we went to Home Depot. It is right next to a small airport but there were no planes flying over head to photograph. So I was stuck with a piture from the parking lot, very dull.

One of my least favorite things to do is to get my hair done. I have been putting it off for too long, so today I made an appointment and got it done. It took what seemed like forever. During my hair cut the son of another salon customer sat next to me and went into a long (and loud) monolog about the evils of drunken cops shooting each other. I have no clue why he picked us to share his views, or why they were so important to him.

My mop looked good. It was blow straight with big waves around my face. I was hoping it would last so I could wear it that way to work tomorrow.

But it is snowing tonight.. I had to go for a walk in the snow. What is the point of walking in the snow if you keep your head covered? Part of the fun is gtting your hair covered in snow. Needless to say my hair is now a wavy mess, but a happy one.

It is snowing hard enough that the footprints I made on my departure were covered on my return. Hopefully we will get enough for work to be canceled tomorrow!

I was on the phone so I skipped my nightly "I have to take a picture of something" stroll. This is one of my favorite books. It is a very quick read thaty is twisted. It amuses me to no end.

Today was an interesting day at work. We were asking each other questions from that show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?". I admit I didn't get all of them right but one of my coworkers floored me with her lack of basic geography. It seems that today she discovered that Nevada is actually a state.Yes, a grown woman (and a travel agent) did not know this. I ws floored.

I asked her if she knw who the vice president is. Her answer was "Isn't he that guy who shot his friend?". She did not know his name. We then asked her who Abraham Lincoln was. She said he was a guy who lies.

I am still amazed how anyone can make it through school, and life without knowing basic information. She can tell you all the Hollywood gossip, but she doesn't know who the current VP is. Even sadder, she is proud that she doesn't know thing.

I am still shaking my head.

@ satrina* - She has been in the industry for years. She is actually a fairly good worker as long as she has the rest of us to answer her questions and doesn't come across anything outside of what she does every day.

The book was given to me years ago by a friend that understands I have a different sense of humor.

@ eelend - If you see it again take a look. It is a very quick read.

I'll let you know if I end up in Madrid. Our office trips are usually just for the weekend, but we usually get a day on our own. It would be great to meet for a drink. If you ever find yourself in NYC we can have that drink here.

@ 'stee - It is sad that many people place more importance on celebrities and the latest "reality" show, rather than take an interest in the real world. I know I am not as aware of things as I should be, but I try to keep informed. This is my favorite umbrella. I have had it since the mid 90’s. Back in 2000 when I divided up everything I owned to go on the road, I entrusted it to a friend. When I returned to NY almost a year later she still had it. Two years ago the wind broke part of it but it is still useable. Currently its home is behind my desk for those nights when the rain catches me without an umbrella for my journey home. The design is Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

We are expecting a downpour tonight into tomorrow. I am taking tomorrow and Monday off. I am doing the thing I dread the most, looking for a new apartment. My lease is up here. Between my current rent, train fare, and my long commute it makes sense to move off Long Island and into Brooklyn or Queens. Once I get settled into my new place I will be happier. Plus I will have plenty of new things to photograph!

If I get a job there I won’t be able to move. I won’t have the vacation time to get everything done. But if I get the job I will make enough to stick it out here for another year. I am feeling rather unsettled at the moment.

It's not an easy position you are in, but I'm hoping whatever comes your way will be the best for you :)

Oh, and I meant to use the needle in the ribs, but only if they're broken in the "articulation"

I am hoping I get the job, but for an account that doesn't start for a month or so. That will give a chance to use my vacation time for the move and still have a new job. It is possible.

For now I will look for a place to live and prepare for my interview. I picked up two new things to wear. I just have to figure out what to do with my hair.

In a way this is kind of exciting. I have been in such a rut lately. Change will revitalize me.

I hate apartment hunting. And the fact that you're doing it in NY gives me chills. Good luck with the hunting and the interview.

Re your Feb28 entry, I have several friends who don't know their basic geography or basic political figures. It's very sad, especially since some of them work in DC...for the government. They know all the celebrity gossip. And whenever we discuss TV (I'm not a huge TV watcher), they can tell me everything that's happening and yet when I tell them that I watch a lot of news programs, they say something like, 'What?! That's it?! But the news is so...boring!!" I love my friends, though. But there are definitely some moment where I just have to shake my head.

I can't imagine the search for a NYC apartment...best of luck. Quick stop here before sleep...

@ lramiro520 - Thanks. I didn't mean to give you chills.

I understand that the can be both boring and depressing. There have been times when I have been on self imposed news blackouts. But it is no excuse not to know the basics.

@ CollardGreens - Thanks, here I am
