Alexandria, Egypt - Train Station.

Here we have a local express that runs with the doors open. The train pulled up and the colors were a nice contrast. I was taking rapid sequence shots of a worker spashing concrete on the roof of some new construction (and all over us too) when this shot came into view. I will post the concrete spashing on CollardGreens when access speeds are better.

Not my first trip to Alexandria but certainly the first on board a local train from Cairo - interesting fare. It is not the TGV I assure you !! Round trip Cairo - Alexandria - Cairo is about 4-5 hours. I was there for a meeting but managed a little free time in between dodging cars, taxis and buses (running for my life !).

Cairo - Heliopolis, Egypt. I had just laid down to sleep in hotel room and looked up...there it was - my own private version of a space oddessy. The image here is from multiple garden lights shining in through multiple layers of reflective window glass. Really a neat effect wouldn't you say?

This moring I was disappointed to see a time stamp on the photo that was just before midnight - I thought I would not be able to use it here. Alas - my camera clock is set for Paris time and Cairo is one hour ahead - so it was after midnight after all.

I know it would be more appropriate to post photos of sphynxs and such but truth is I have not seen much more than the inside of an office and hotel room. Will change that tomorrow.

The ceiling effect from the garden lights is not so pronounced in real life - it is only when the camera captures the light does the color come so pronounced. I like it too. Last night I changed the opening to the window and tried again with really different effects - maybe start a set on hotel room ceilings ...what do you think?

Several of us have adopted the 00:00:00 - 23:59:59 as a matter of keeping all the photos in timeline. I trust the camera clock much more than my feeble memory ! Sometimes the best part of a journey is telling your friends where you have been...I go to some pretty remote places from time to time. Blue passports are sometimes a hinderence to getting there. This trip is for work to be sure so there is not so much time for wanted tourism...we try. Have a look : CollardGreens for some other shots of local life here in Cairo. I'll post a set when back in high speed land.

I agree with you on the color and sun of the train shot - it had been quite some time in Paris with no sunshine (or rather only brief looks). The temperature in Alexandria holds at 20 in daylight and 8 at night - quite a spread.

I agree the last entry makes a better painting - it suprised me when it came to the view screen because it was so unusual compared to what I saw with my eyes - sometimes they lie but the camera doesn't. Good to see you.

How long is a Century ?

Having breakfast on the veranda...just off the terrace is a set of succulent variety plants - one a century plant in the early stages of bloom. These plants shoot a large diameter stalk out of their center (myth has it) every hundred years - hence it's name. This one is ripe to bloom in a few days. Alas I will miss it as the return to home and hearth is tomorrow. So here is today's offering - a century, just in time...

Sorry for the absence these few days, I thought that you couldn't post and I didn't look at.
I already heart about these very rare flowerings, the cactus also do it. Hundred years it so much!!. Regeret to miss it.

I was in Cairo one time, cahotic city. In particular the cimitery is an amazing thing with the people who live inside.
Great close up of the plant

Bathed in Sunshine
26JAN07 - CollardGreens

Bathed in Sunshine

My last day (this time) in Cairo. It is Friday, the weekend in Egypt and much of the middle/near east. Cairo is quiet - not so many cars on the road so the noise is lower - still there but not so harsh. I have a few hours before the flight back to cloudy, cold Paris and the warm embrace of my wife.

I am trying to become better in the contrast arena so am constantly looking for something with high contrast possibilities. I was in the process of transferring photos from the card to computer - leaned back in the chair while it happend (camera loaded with fresh card) into the sunshine streaming warmly in through the window. Basking in the light, I thought to press the shutter and see what happened - this is it - from a reflection in the mirror.

So - I apologize to those of us who live in the grisaille...but you would bathe in it too ! I have 2 more hours before leaving for the airport...guess what I will do...

Yeah - the sun...I get pretty "SAD" during the winters in Paris - so I manage a business trip or 2 to a nice sunny spot. It really improves the disposition !

Right - I froze my butt off in the taxi from the airport. When I left Paris it was 15 - when I returned it was -2 !

Thanks - I played with the crop only a small amount - none from the bottom. There was too much black space in the original. I sat in the chair for about and hour like that ...today the nose is red !

Bus Cameos
27JAN07 - CollardGreens

80 ways to move...

The hustle and bustle from the street below (and sometimes the restaurant) make the front window a great place to hang out. Not too many people look up and notice me there. I am starting a new series here - Bus Cameos. Pan at same speed as bus/car and fire as many shots as the camera can buffer...throw out the bad ones (lots of bad ones) and keep the good. This is the start - I hope my technique gets better...

Weather today and sniffles kept the wife and I inside. A good stew, plenty of water (in the form of wine) and a video - our perscription for recovery!

Faith, Hope but where is Charity ?

Faith, Hope and Charity

These are a couple from our small bronze collection (not that there is a large bronze collection - just these are small in size!). We call them (L to R) Faith and Hope...you will notice there is not a Charity. We are looking for a suitable addition.

It occurs to me that Charity begins at home - that is what the old wise women in our family say. Charity is easy concept - give of yourself to someone who needs what you have to give. It can be as simple as opening the door, carrying the bag, picking up the check, donating that shirt you don't wear anymore - you get it...

So - a challenge ! One act of charity tomorrow...think of one and do it !!

Remember - it comes back to you 10 fold !

A Closer Red

Tonight was spaghetti night !! I love when the sauce has been on the stove for hours on end. The smell that comes through the apartment must drive the other residents mad ! Cooked long and eaten slow...that is how it is done. Each bite with a mouthfull of nice red wine - tonight a simple one from Entrechaux.

The photo is a closeup of the glass lid to the sauce pot - cropped only a little, otherwise untouched. Shot some in Black and White but settled on posting the color version - felt better. Played with some Bus Cameo shots while hanging out the window - its hard to catch the cameo...

I want to say thanks for helping me out with the quick link thing, I decided to set up a calendar style link system on my intro and after a lot of work, got it up and running.
My wife and I had our honeymoon in Paris, we both love the look and feel and visit the museums and the cafes and restaurants, and capped of the week with a 'Baton Mouche' trip on the Seine which was kindly donated by my work friends - it was fantastic!
I'm glad to hear that your wife is liking her D80, might we see some of her shots on Flickr?
Just bought a Sigma 10-20 lens for my camera, I will be needing it for landscapes and street shots for the Tourism guide that I put together for Weymouth and Portland Authority, I'll get some shots up when I figure out how to use it properly.
To be honest i can't quite get my head round the 'diary' thing, it will take me a while to feel comfortable enough to publish really personal things about myself, if I ever do. The Diary is the diary - you put what you want or nothing at all. For me it is a fun way to document the days activity. For others it is a way to find on line support in an environment that is "face to face" safe - meaning they don't have to say it to a "real" person.

The wife is timid concerning her talents (she has many!) and will post in time - for now I take credit for one she tool - Click Here - to see it. (she gave permission..)

Passing Inspiration

We have been on a mini-holiday today. The winter sun in all it's southerly glory and ultra-blue skies has seen fit to provide us with it's blessing. In return I provide this capture...Passing Inspiration.

We stumble upon a festival of winter in a small village near Chablis. The preparations are on for tomorrow where 25,000 people will descend on the village and taste the fruits of the summer's labor.

We are there a day ahead of the onslaught - capturing a nice easy anticipatory festival feeling. Here is where Inspiration is Passed from one generation to another. Look for greatness from this child.

I chose this shot to post as it was at the instant of handoff...passing inspiration was what I thought it did - thanks for the visit.

The shot was overexposed by the floodlights on the side of the building and nothing I did would bring them down without taking out the rest of the photo - so looked up my sleeve and there was a trick...Thanks for correcting the date - fixed...probably because I was tasting too much Chablis - yes we brought back a healthy stock to sample !

Serving up large portions - pull up a chair there is plenty !

Thanks to all for the visit and comments.

Warming Cold Fingers

When we think of February we think of grey skies and huddled blankets in front of a fire. Not today - the sun displayed it's majesty. I caught this colorful set of branches (best seen large) warming themselves in the early afternoon. It seemed as if they were talking in sign language...what do you think they said ??

Dateline: Vézelay, FR - Basilique de Vézelay. We managed to fill 6 gb with photos today !! Record for us...Mostly outside as the weather was spectacular. The sky was tu bleue ! This photo with no post processing...

More in the set February Madness. I will post many more tomorrow.

Oh you have it in the camera...remember it is not pushing the button but knowing which button to push !

Thanks ! Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and again !
