Thanks Rob - This one has been a mutha ! Its coming around and I expect full operational recovery this weekend ...good guess on the book but...see below:

There is of course a difference between a library and a bookshelf...the latter is one where we store references or novels that we go to often. Libraries tend to be a little bit show...I like bookshelves better (even though we have a library...).

Wow, that strep thing got you for a loooong one!

It's been quite a while since I read your entries, and today I find the time. Miscelaneous remarks "in passing":
I like that the tea seals the deal. Very civilized way of doing business.
Surprised at the tiny fingers doing the painting... I thought they were midgets blowing the paint on the paper.
Good that you're bulletproof again.

Thinking about taking a trip to Paris in November, there are usually quite a few photo exhibitions at that time of the year, and there's lot of talk about Courbet at Le Grand Palais... And do I need more excuses than that?
Jonathan Riverwalker 11 years ago
first on strep - my last bout was years ago as i worked a chair lift operator at the ski hill - my station was half way up the mountain where i put in 12 hour shifts alone with almost no breaks - id pull the gate across and run in the woods when i had to - and eat standing up

i had a sore throat before christmas and the doctor told me it was just a virus and would take care of itself - well it did and me too - all christmas brek i swung chair in -20 temps and felt indeed like i was swallowing rasor blades -three weeks later after christmas, the doctor got around to looking at the lab results from the swab he took just in case and decided i should be on antibiotics right away - i was with some effort pleasant

and time running aeway - i cant wait to see more - heike complains everyday there is not enough time - even when we spend the whole day on the couch - now that im temporarily not working, i am more than content with my alottment of time :D

sorry for running on so :D
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
Hey Daniel - good to see you. Yep the strep has been a bitch.., but it is 99.995% done...the other small portion will never go away being a carrier and all.

November is a good time. I think NOV is a month of focus on photography here (anyone please correct me). Come on up - its not that far and I think you have a boatload of friends here anyway...any excuse is a good one. I am out of town 14-17 but other than that (and possibly a one night trip to Cancale for huites et moules) I am here. Give a call -

Jonathan the Jerman guy ! I hope you and Heike make it through Paris...its not that far away and if you have never been here - I can assure you it will change your life forever. Time Time Time is on my side, yes it is
My internet connection is slower than dial-up these days and won't load the photos in these threads so sorry if I haven't commented or visited often--it is too frustrating.

I definitely don't have strep just a dry cough and mild sore throat. I hope that you are feeling better.

We took a nice (and brisk) walk further west along the river today. We were hoping for some sunshine to take these particular trees. I have seen them turning day by day and this is almost too late in the cycle. No sunshine to be had - as Pablo said - perhaps it is a myth !

GreyGears

One would think that the ratio of grey days to sunny days would reach some equilibrium. Nope - still in the balance stages...grey winning by a long shot!

We tried (and the operative word here is "tried") to take a couple of days in champagne area at a nice little hotel near Châlons-En-Champagne. Seems the whole country (and half the neighboring) thought of the same thing. A "special" weekend in France we were told. Normally you could roll up to any of these hotels and you would be greeted with at least a comfortable room at a reasonable price. Today we only found a room with no window to the outside world and a 2 meter square size...a closet in other words.

Not to be disuaded, we rolled toward our favorite little vignoble to get some blanc de blanc...alas a degorgement the week prior left the producer with no stock...damn - have to settle for the brut ! A note in the files however that I would be back in December to load up so reserve me several cases...agreed.

We could not discover any hotels in the neighboring towns or even in Epernay so the 2 hour ride home resulted in a test of today's purchase and a evening in front of the tele...not too bad.

Laws are not written in stone are they ? There is always a little room for greyness in policy...right ??

Montparnasse Cemetary - a lovely place to spend the entire 10 minutes of sunshine we received today. Otherwise the grey skies were helpful in our decision to visit and shoot a cemetary. The place is clean, beautiful with yellow trees and quiet visitors. It was perfect for our afternoon...with a few exceptions....

Because I was using a "professional looking" camera (and monopod) I was told I would need authorization to photograph here. OR - if I put away the monopod and took photos without support - it would be ok. ...ok...so I put away the monopod...no problem - light still bright enough to have shutter speeds equal to lens. A few moments later another officer approached and again asked if I had authorization...lengthy discussions later - the officer did not believe I was an amature (and used a gesture often used here - you pull down your lower eyelid to show the red...it means RIGHT ! I can see through your intentions...). He proposed that I put it all away or I would be asked to leave the park...to which I promptly responded by asking to be escorted out.

On the way to the entrance - I learned he has been working here 18 years and has a healthy respect for the owners of the graves - and that is why I cannot take professional photos...I would be welcome to use a smaller camera as that would protect the owners of the graves. I reminded him that the owners were dead and probably would like the attention anyway...his stance was rigid and he insisted no more photos...afraid they would end up in some travel magazine (God forbid...) or other disrespectful paper.

I offered to show him what photos had been taken - no response...this way please. In the end - we left the park - still not understanding. It is something I will look up or ask my Paris culture contact (photogrin) for advice... et alors ?
friuduric 11 years ago
The most interesting cemetary I've been in was the Protestant (anti-cattolico -- *anti*-catholic, I love it!) cemetary in Rome. There were some amazing tombstones there. I can see the guard's concern; people in general aren't very respectful of others, living or dead.

I like your description of the guard's gesture: a physical "yeah, my eye!"

;-)

RobW_ PRO 11 years ago
I sense a frustrating few days. Greyness, no room at the Inn in Champagne, and being mistaken for a pro in the cemetery. I think the guard was right. Your icon says "pro" next to your name up there, doesn't it? ;-)
ParaScubaSailor 11 years ago
I agree with the guard: we don't want no stinkin' PRO foreigners taking pictchahs of tombstones without a parmit. A parmit that they pay for would make it all better. Surely the respect one pays the dead is proportional to the amount of money they paid to take the photographs...
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
I agree that there are types that leave empty wine bottles between the graves and pee in the corners...this is not respectful...and indeed I buy into the whole act of making sure a certain mode (and level) of reverence is achieved...BUT - no names, no faces is my policy when shooting in a situation like this. It is the mood that I am trying to capture - and perhaps I did in the end after all...

Thanks Pablo - there will be more on this story as soon as I get my "authorization"...read on:

Sometimes you can't struggle against the current ! I have a plan in the works...

That was my argument all along... So let me make sure I understand this...if I pay then I can play ? Yes - being the response. I will now seek out a way to get authorization and attestation (and perhaps laminated card with photo ID) to be an official Amature Photog ....that will get em !

The sun made it's 10 minute appearence today and we rushed out to Les Invalides carrying a sac lunch and (more discrete this time) camera set. The park is in it's final days of yellow leaves and soon the trees will be bare bones again. Within a few minutes the wind shifted to out of the north and along with it came the dark clouds. A whole is the sum of it's parts. A story is but a collection of details. Quarks have quarkettes...

There is always more to know than what is on the surface. I ask the question "Why?" 5 times before attempting any task. That way you drill down to near the heart of what needs to be done...or doesn't need to be done. We have many young colleagues in our office who are indeed qualified and work hard at their tasks...when I tell them about the technique - the first response is always WHY?...to which I always respond - you are 20% of the way there !

Ladies and gentlemen - please, a heathy dose of respect for these young men and women - worldwide - who make a sound of mind decision to become paramedic firefighters. They are to be commended. Day after day they step into the boots and risk life, limb and sometimes comrads to make our world a little safer.

The inebriated gentleman had sometime earlier ran into the post that prevents cars from running into pedestrians...immediately falling down and howling the foulest of language. PassersBy called the sapeur pompiers (paramedics) and these 3 came upon the scene.

Said inebriated gentleman then promptly refused any treatment as he did not want to go to detox...and oh by the way - do you have any spare change. The gloved paramedic went into the boulangerie and bought a sandwich - passed it to the wobly citizen and left.

Düsseldorf is indeed interesting but it would not be on my list of places to live...my brain is much too latin. The convention is so large that the city must float in boat hotels to manage all the people - and even then a good percentage of the visitors must take hotels well outside the city.
