Hi there.
I've been away again for more than a week and it feels like i need to comment on every single entry you made. Not going to do it today, i'm ever so tired, but can't go without saying that the Frozen in time is another of your words that i will remember. We can almost feel your feelings of that week with the image and words you wrote. Thanks for that.
:))

And life is so good, you're right. Enjoy your holidays.

Sometimes you just need a moment to yourself - to reflect a bit and take in your thoughts...to process them into memory. Today we had time to do just that. I nice margaux in the afternoon and a patient evening. A sunset missed but no matter - we are on holiday and there is SoftRain.

Life is full - just plain full - of dangers. We take the chance to step off the curb - danger, we commute and travel in machines - danger, we take chances with our health - danger...everywhere around you is danger. Knowing the boundaries of danger is a must - to avoid what we can and forget about what we cannot. It is in times of danger that we appreciate just how tiny a speck we are in the universe and at the same moment how full of life we really are. I will take the time today to appreciate what has been given to me in terms of life and happiness. Yes indeed there is danger - it is ever present and we navigate as best we can. I have never felt so alive as when I am in danger.

Two very good and long time friends from Florida have joined us in Biarritz for a reunion. It has been some time since we have seen them and times are good. We have stayed awake too long talking about really nothing and really everything.

Sorry I have been so absent in these diaries and on flickr-internet is sporadic.

SunsetBall

I have been chasing a sunset for days now and finally one comes my way...but not without an anxious moment. There was fog on the port this evening and I was afraid that I would again not be able to see the setting sol. In the last few seconds before the magic moment, the fog lifted and there it was. My SunsetBall.

Each day I require a time alone...to reflect, process recent events, plan the future, you know the drill. I need some time alone for this. I took time today to be alone on the cliffs and watch the sunset. Time well spent.

Thanks for that Casey - I was feeling a bit challenged on such a grey day...your comments are a huge confidence boost ! Hope your path has been a little easier lately. I appreciate you stopping around.

And there was indeed an adventure - our primary goal was to spend some quality time together. The conditions provided an excuse - we really had a nice time to chat about everything as well as nothing. A perfect adventure. Hows the light up where you are now ?

Hey Rob - I was really digging deep for a photo as I thought all was lost due to the bad light and rain. Then there was a bridge crossing the water - we climbed up and snap...there it was. Thanks !

...oh and I neglected to mention that we planned and executed a route along the shore line home...you could see a good 2 meters when you really could see ! Took us 1 hour out of the way and deeper into traffic !! I was impressed by just how much wasted space there was. But they did waste it on light reflecting surfaces...so all is not lost.

After what was probably a tough tourist season, perhaps this is the only time they could afford to change exhibits...at least that is what we heard - it made sense but we were disappointed in any case.

Thanks to all for encouragement when I needed it !

I never gave the phrase a second thought - always heard it used while growing up...I thought it had to do with "Fritz the Cat" but now that you mention it - it clearly could have come from certain beginnings...Berlin is one of the first places I visited as part of my european job so long ago, so I know some things about it - and for sure was here before the barriers were dropped...interesting place - more to follow.

All too soon after a week long holiday in the SW of France, I am on the road again...this time to Berlin. Berlin has been reborn in recent years into a modern (sometimes ultra) metropolis. Hotels renovated, upgraded, built new - even to the point of being a bit block like in design...this style of art has it's place too.

I will be here for only a few days to help out at another medical congress...seen one - seen em all. Berlin is a fascinating city with it's history and global image etc. I have precious little time to walk the streets but will try to make a point of it in the coming days...tonight however - sleeping in a hotel will probably result in a "where am I?" awakening...

LifeNAFountain

So the exhibition ended today with a little time left for a walk about. I did not have to go too far when I was confronted by an often photographed partially destroyed church in the middle of town. Just next to the church is a fountain that begs to be photographed but it's neighbor steals the show on most days....not today. I opted to photograph the less fortunate. I will make it a point to learn the nature of this fountain and report it back to you. Tonight it seems to be a little bored with the whole affair - even a little wet.

Such rich colours and textures in that picture. I'm glad the beer bottle is part of the composition - at first I thought someone had discarded it there, which would have been very unlike Berlin!

I enjoyed both of my visits to Berlin - before and after the Wall. wonderful Jazz clubs there, some not far down the Ku'dam from that ruined church. Are you perhaps staying at the Grand Hotel Kempinski?
CollardGreens PRO 11 years ago
This fountain captured my attention as much by the unique total concept as by the individual little follies...in fact the whole fountain is a follie - in the midst of a serious memory.

I think it is the "latin" mindset...it is hard for me to wait for the little man to turn green to cross the street ...but people here do and it seems to work nicely. You really should consider it as a stop during the winter...this is when prices will be cheap and it is sure Rome has direct flights. You should give it a try...but do try to respect the flow of peolpe/bike/car traffic.

Not this time Rob - I have stayed at the Kempinski prior but this time in a newly removated ultra zen/modern halogen hotel...big rooms and clean. Berlin has evolved as the second largest Turkish population (maybe the largest ?) outside of Turkey - so the asia-minor influence is evident. Street life is vivid (look for pics later - gotta catch a plane) and tourism big. Here at a business exhibition as you can imagine - but with some time to wander...

IMSlow

Is it just me or does the world seem to be running in super fast motion? Time moves more rapidly than ever before...there is never enough time for the things we want to do...the deadline approaches at light speed... Is everything moving so fast or is it that I have finally learned to slow my own speed ?

I plan to devote some time to this perspective. The shot taken from a tripod with a long lens at fairly slow ISO for the light. It captures all that does not move in a normal fashion but blurs the rest. As people walk, one foot is stationary for a period of time while the other foot/leg advances to the next step. The trick of the shot is to adjust the ISO and aperture/shutter speed until that stationary foot is captured along with the rest of the background....that and use a remote shutter button and perhaps "mirror up prior to shot" mode to stabilize the background against camera movement (or better yet VR).

Hope you like it.

Hey Daniel - I have used telescope filters in daylight to slow things down and I have a 500mm mirror lens that also has some hefty filters available. They work pretty well - but I like the twilight effects of a nearly setting sun etc. It is easier than it sounds to get legs with missing people when so many pass by !

Berlin Air has some good fares - check them out. The US has some good fares this month and then again in JAN. They rape the returning holiday expatriates during Nov and Dec (USA based airlines)...in JAN a 400 U$D fare...in DEC that turns to 800++. Rome trip is associated with a business meeting that is still evolving into reality...no news yet.

Hey (Busy) Rob - I appreciate you stopping round. Sounds like your life has been in the fast lane lately !

Appreciate the comments...by the way - I posted a photo of your Paris Ferris in my stream a few days ago. It is exactly the opposite perspective as the one you posted ! Just for fun.

Marc - with ever the eye for detail ! I suppose for the complete effect, I should go back and remove the stick figure - or at least blur the upper body ! VR = vibration reduction...a pretty costly option for a lens.

I understand the timing issue...it would be interesting to see some long exposures on moving horses ! Thanks for the "Good Stuff"

OldParkCafe

There is a park in front of the Tour Eiffel....Champs de Mars - (Fields of March). Smack dab in the middle of this park is a children's "merry go round" (hand crank powered - complete with sticks and rings). If front of that is a cafe. I would like to know more about this cafe. It was closed for the first several years of our stay here but has been open for the last 2 or 3. Not a particularly good cafe but splendid location.

Today was a major strike in Paris - no busses, trains, metro blahblahblah. Reasons - probably too complex to really understand but from where I sit unneeded. Social programs in France are great and we enjoy better benefits than most of the world. Within the social system - the people who went on strike have even more special support than most. The funding for these programs comes from taxes (which I am happy to pay as you get something for your money) and taxes come from working. There is a balance folks and the budget needs to be fueled. The equation is simple...you have to put in at least as much as you take out or it will collapse... * steps down from soapbox.

If you don't bargain in some countries it is considered an insult...sort of like you have too much money to care - you see? So get in there and ask about best price and "What - you expect me to pay the tourist price ??!??" good luck - don't be afraid - you might just get a surpri$e

Having just finished 6 days of anitbiotics the damn strep throat still lingers...another round of meds needs to start. For now to swallow - it feels like all hellfire !

This shot is of a ventilation shaft in the center of the building. The lights are coming from the bar below...hot times !!

In actual fact it is near the LAVAtory but not ventilating the lavatory (thank goodness). I was scrambling for a shot and there it was...

Doldrums

Having resolved to beat this bacteria thing I did not go round looking for things to photograph - instead I printed some of the ones already taken. Many tonight were already promised to others, some were not even mine but I was printing technician anyway. A quiet evening listening to the szzip whir of the printer. I did learn something today...that printers actually have tiny little fingers that paint the image onto the paper !! OK a bit lame but there you have it.

I'm sorry this strep is hanging around way past its welcome!

Lots of fluids, lots of rest, and no sweets.

Thanks for the advice and visits...I think I have this one under control now. I just have to realize that I am not bulletproof anymore !

OK everyone does it - so here is my offering. I found it interesting to see what others keep on the bookshelf. This one is in the salon and I use some more than others but like them all. It is a small mix of specific interests that interest us...

Oh the wonders of (not so) modern medicine. The drugs are working as planned although on a much stronger beast. I am here to tell you that streptococcus strains have mutated / adapted (as per Darwin) to accomodate their enemies. I think this one is about over but my wife has the handcuffs out and I am chained to the apartment in the evenings until the regiment is completed. 2-3 more days and I will be set free.

Stick around - there is a well rested and soon to be bulletproof again photog being set loose this weekend !
