ah, that's a sweet photo and sweet commentary. I've been getting therapeutic massage lately and have definitely felt the benefits of good, healing touching!

Re: the dog... oh, hahaa... the way you wrote it, it sounded like she was lost ("bounded into the office")! I thought you were gonna be able to keep her. How cool to live in a place that is cool with dogs being in the workplace!

And regarding the new lens: it hasn't come yet :-(

it has a thoughful face

i think that the "touching" works
and i think that it's good for the person who touchs and the one who's touched
not very long ago, i realized i only touch (the arm, the hand...) the people i love

Hey Barb - thanks for the comments and surely I would have kept the dog if it were a stray...or at least held it for an appreciative other.

Muse Maillot...nice collection there and always a permenant section. Hope all is well - thanks for the visit.

Hey Rob - thanks.

The touching is really a conduit to pass emotion...glad you came by.

I have been wanting to visit one of our friends from MDPD group for some time. A business trip to Italy came up and I made up my mind to drive for several reasons...one of which was to arrange a meeting with our very own Daniel (the para sailor scuba guy)...to have that beer we have been talking about.

Everything worked out perfectly - we had some dinner at a place that you would never know existed...we talked about everything and solved all the world's problems AND AND AND I learned a thing or two about local cheeses and wine...what could be better? Thanks for the hospitality Daniel...I will expect you in Paris sometime !

The photo is from a village high in the mountains near the Mont Blanc tunnel. The weather was growing bad and indeed the rains came during dinner - heavy at times. All the better for sleeping.

Up all too early for the drive into Italy where I have business. The route takes me through the Mont Blanc tunnel. The road is winding with cutbacks all along the way. The rain was steady as I climbed and then near the entrance to the tunnel the snow came - and I mean it really came. Curious for May !

The drive took me past Milano into the lake district in the north. Meetings with local docs and then a drive to the sea...long hours today but in the end a solid sleep with sea sounds (see photostream) as a lullaby...good stuff.

That is a spectacular shot in the mountains, and so nice that you got to share a meal, and a drink or two, with a fellow diarist. Makes it all real, somehow. Snow in the Alps - I remember driving to the top of the St. Gotthard Pass in May many years ago, in an open car, and being turned back because of the snow, which looked just like your picture. I ended up on a flatbed railroad truck (in an open car) going through the railway tunnel, freezing cold and unbelievably noisy.

You always have the most distinguished shots of drinks, and I can imagine how you savoured that (sweet?) wine. Finally, sunrise in Milan. I had the good fortune to visit Milan many times on business, but don't ever recall seeing the sun - always a thick grey cloud, winter and summer. Us South Africans get severe withdrawal symptoms when deprived of the sun. Which is why the Mediterranean suits me - although the last few weeks have me worried.

Oh, and watch this space, LuckyWhiteGirl - one of Europe's finest Gothic cathedrals, with La Scala and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuel right around the corner.
Hope to meet Daniel in Corsica this September. Perhaps you and your wife could join us and we could have a meal somewhere--and of course a glass of wine. (I am not a beer drinker).

The light was good and the time was right...thats what we look for right? Give this a look... hopefully I can make it there around the magic hour of good evening light...fingers crossed.

It was really a lot of fun (dinner) and you are right - it makes it real somehow. The wine on the table was a main course white - perfectly suited for fish as it is from a small area near Imperia (by the sea). Stunning white with lots of fruit and not too much alcohol. The link above lists all the stats from the cathedral in milano...impressive anytime of day but I hope for deep shadows...we will see.

Good idea !! Of course the wine in corse..the rosés are particularly gentle and bright (lots of sun and cool temps). Paris is only 1 hour flight from med so don't be surprised...you'll have to let me know where - you pass through Paris anyway right?
No, I fly from San Francisco to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt to Nice then Nice to Bastia. I can send you an email with a the phone number of the bed and breakfast I stay in près de Corte.

looks like u having a great trip- lol at the Mind the Ga- having lived in London for almost two years now- have to admit that it's prob not just for tourist, public safety is taken very seriously here - and people are warned not only about the gap, but also told which way to look before crossing the road (marked on the road) and warned about any potential hazard- soem even more obvious than others- quite strange when u first experience it but after a while one starts appreciating it (even tho it can be annoying) and understanding that's probably why things work so well and orderly in this city- almost like keeping in touch with the culture of queing ;-) tee hee

OK - I had planned to go to city center and take some classic shots of the duomo in Milano but it started raining hard and well...I was asked to take in a dinner with my Italian colleagues. So into the cars we piled and off to Monza to a restaurant specializing in tender cuts of meats. As you can see there was sooo much food on the table as well as some good local wines. We were 12 on the table and loud (Italians are loud!) !! Good stuff ...after this a ride to the hotel and immediately to sound sleep!

Friday evening. I left Milano and drove through the alps again through the Frejus tunnel emerging into France...onward to Aix-Les-Bains. My wife took the TGV from Paris and we met at the hotel. A week away from home already. We booked a hotel in the mountain village (on a beautiful natural lake). In many hotels (this one with only 4 rooms) there is usually a good restaurant. In this particular hotel there lives a well know chef and his wife who just so happen to present a single sitting per night...of course it was an obligation to sample a dinner - this one lasted 3 hours ! Fabulous !

I apologize (not very hard mind you) for posting yet another bottle of wine but there are so many good ones here in France that it seems a just thing to do when you find a good one. We did and here it is...sante !

Yes...those are cow hats !! In France, when a young couple plans a marrage there is always an evening out on the town with each of the soon to be weds. On saturday in the park we ran across a bevy of beauties who were deep in celebration. The young lass with a normal hat on is to be married in 3 weeks - this celebration is for her. I approached this group with the hopes of a shot and they were more than willing ! I post this in celebration of marriage - best to her and her soon to be husband, whereever he is !!

I captured this during the evening promenade. With light available until very late it is easier to wander for the shot of the day. It is located in the back of École Militaire where the calvarie stables are located. The shape here is very musical and it's purpose is elegantly for security.

The choice of photo today is specific to the task at hand tomorrow...I will need IronThorns to survive (work related). I will conjure up this image when I need it - using the power without warning...but as in this device - only for purposes of defense.

milkAlfi

Time moved rapidly in a slow way today. I wake up early in the morning...that is to say I get out of bed early in the morning. I wake up VERY slowly. The neurons sort or wake up one by one, not all at once. So it takes me some time to become functional (if ever). One of the addictions of my morning routing is hot coffee with warm milk. To keep everything in its proper kenetic state, we have 2 Alfi insulated pitchers...one for coffee and one for milk. The preparation is part of the waking up process...and pouring the warm/hot liquids into the pitchers is the final step before the first taste.

The milkAlfi had a little meltdown and part of my waking up ritual was disturbed...I will get it fixed this weekend. Until then, I have to adapt the ritual. Darwin was right.

Mr Riverwalker sir...I know you enjoy coffee from a piston (Bodum)..one of the problems in using a piston is that the coffee gets cold fast. Try one of these if you ever have the chance. (google Alfi).

Greece Illuminated

A couple of years ago we made an escape to Greece...the isle of Hydra. Cars are not allowed here and all products move on the backs of donkeys or in carts pushed by human power. An hours catamaran ride from Athens this place sees a lot of tourism. We found it to be special - we'll be back. The lamp here is typical of old Greece (Rob help me out...) and would burn oils - this one only small candles. We bought it just because - no other reason.

Searching this evening late for a grab...things at work hectic as we approach the end of a fiscal year...perhaps this photo can shed a little light to help find my way.

Plenty of restaurants to be sure BUT on Friday there is the fresh market and the Lebanaise kiosk. Here we can buy all sorts of near east cuisine. I like to take my camera and the sack of goodies and eat in front of the fountain - after take a walk along the park.

Vagabondage tip # 610 - Learn to read the signs, it can save your life ! As I travel from place to place, I make it a habit to learn several words in both vocal and print format. Hello, goodbye, please, thank-you, yes, no, HELP, FIRE and finally DANGER. These can make your passage one that you will live to tell about as well as a passage more agreeable.

Paris Tip - Taxis que at Taxi stands - clearly marked TAXI. If you come to visit (really you should take the time to learn the METRO system) and want to use a taxi, be advised to learn WHERE are the locations...they are plentiful.

Here we have the often seen (at least I see it often) search for a taxi. This lady is standing in a perilous location...1/2 meter behind and the bus zooms by...1/2 meter ahead and the motos will get you. DON'T stand in the middle of the street to hail a taxi ! There is no place for them to stop...and they won't ! This photo is in the final moments before she learns that the HONK BLAST from a quickly moving bus will scare the skirt right over your head !! In full view of the restaurant mind you...

Learn some words - and learn the system - in advance from actually needing either !

Beautiful sunday in Paris - warm with plenty of sunshine. As it is my wife's birthday she has first choice on activities. She chooses a brochante (high priced flea market) in a quaint area of town. She likes to look at everything while I like to cruise quickly...then find a cafe to wait.

In the quick cruise, I ran across the scene above. Remember the children's game - how many items can you find ? Here we go:

Find:
1 - Soviet Cosmonaut Helmet
2 - Pressure Suit
3 - Lenin
4 - Stalin
5 - Red Star
6 - Mad rabbit
7 - Potty Chair
8 - Goggles
9 - Snail

Stalin was a bad boy for sure...Lenin at least had some ideals - neither really did Russia any favours in the end but both shaped the culture with an iron hand. Party !

I look forward to the information. We are already talking about a long weekend away and this may just be the answer.

YES ! We should have a theme !! Maybe we make dinner on Para Wings ! (Virtual of course - I'm a little timid...) Perhaps a good burgundy with some robichon...(sp)

Ya think ?? I am sure for only a few rubels we can get this stuff ! Thanks for stopping by

Heres Looking at You

Monday night "Paris Photo Meetup" meeting...Normally we meet at a cafe and share ideas and prints etc. Once a month we meet at a metro stop for a sunday shoot - we shoot for 3 hours and then meet to review the groups photos in a slide show...great fun. Tonight we did something a little different - a Shoot-Up ! We were 14 broken into 2 groups.

I had the pleasure to stand in for Frere Jacques as the moderator (being moderate and all). Our subjects: LOST, Reflections, Revolution (it was at Bastille), Twilight, Cafe Life.

A good time was had by all - here is one of the shots (posted here only) of my choice: Reflections

If you have the chance to visit here - please make a little time for our group - you won't be sorry.
