2007-03-16 - Vendredi 16 mars.

The marking event today is my visit at the photo shop. I'm looking for an underwater housing to take pictures while Scuba-diving. At first, the shop was going to sell the whole lot (Pelican case, underwater flash, camera (The original Canon EOS1) and lens (17-35L2.8)) for the price of the camera and lens, but I convinced them they'd be better off if they sold the camera and lens as separate items. There will be some adjustments needed (the 5D is thicker and of a slightly different shape than the EOS 1) but I'm quite confident I can fit my camera in the housing. I would have loved to show you the action on the table in the shop, but the camera was at the heart of the "operation"...
Earlier on that day, on my way to a meeting, I spotted this rather original car:
BMW
It's a BMW Isetta, and had I stayed in the area, I would have considered purchasing it...

OK - I get it...when we passed through switzerland just before Lausanne we spotted about 30 paragliders in the air just off the highway. Must be great fun ! Good series here and the recent posts - I will take some time to follow the links later...

Here in the above you have a very fine example of a machine suited to task...simple to repair and economic to run...not very fast but who needs it in the city?? In very good condition as well.

OK here we go - just downloaded the US TV series Heros from i-Tunes...lazy saturday with no agenda...bon weekend.

the little car looks like a toy -- i don't think it would survive here amonst the SUVs

the swan is simply beautiful, especially the perspective from which you shot it -- great work :-)

You're right, daybreak is a special time, i don't usually have a spectacular view of it from my house, but I love the way everything is bathed in a glow -- different from sunset.

So many gorgeous images. I love the sunset and great job on the swan. Underwater photography is a dimension that I truly admire; but I cannot imagine myself doing it. Can't wait to see what you will come up with and share with us.

Ted, lazy Saturdays are fine, from time to time, but I have so little time that I'm very loathe to waste week-end time to be lazy. I'd rather take a day off work in the middle of the week for that ;-)
It enhances the flavour too!

Bun, to me it's more about having a car different to whatever any body else drives. I actually don't enjoy small cars, generally speaking.

Sweet coffee, it was in the daysq when companies could afford to be creative. Nowadays, bean counters and marketing drones run the shows...

Lady, I'm still wondering if it's a good thing that I systematically have a quick thought in your direction every time I feel the HL level stirring from low values, and wondering what kind of instrument you use to measure...

Ted, no worries, patience is indeed what you need :-D

2007-03-17 - Samedi 17 mars.

Spent the day working around the house, mostly digging foundations for a small retaining wall at the end of a parking area. The marking event of the day was supper at Philippe's place. He cooked us a dish from Brazil, where he lived for a few years, when he almost ended up homeless in France after he lost his job.
He earned too much money from unemployment to qualify for low-cost housing, but could not rent anything as landlords would not accept him without a payslip...
At the end of the meal, he showed us one of the way Cachaça is sold: it looks like a cooldrink can.

Later that afternoon, I went back to the nature reserve at the estuary of the river Dranse to shoot some more duck pictures. The rain chased me.

2007-03-20 - Mardi 20 mars.

I rush home from work to prepare some fresh pasta. My friend Maryse is coming for supper tomorrow, and I know I won't have time to prepare it then, so we'll actually have homemade almost fresh pasta ;-)

Tagliatelle!

After supper I rush to Thonon for a cinema and debate evening organised by Attac. The movie is Fast Food Nation. Don't really feel like eating hamburgers... (Not that I normally eat them, anyway)
ParaScubaSailor 11 years ago
2007-03-21 - Mercredi 21 mars.

The reason why the evening is somewhat rushed is that I went to the photography shop again. I've decided that I will purchase the underwater housing I saw on Friday. I was prepared to pay up to 80% of the asking price, but they let it go at 60%, so I'm quite happy. B&H will help me get rid of the leftover change, I'm sure...
Ready for the op'

Supper was quite nice (tagliatelle con salvia al burro, and a salad from the garden) and I rushed downstairs afterwards to start fiddling with the new toy...

The pasta is just...gorgeous. The irony of the narrative that goes with it is hilarious, but also wonderful. To live a life in which one has friends named "Maryse" with whom one shares fresh pasta, seems like the stuff of which dreams are made.

Ted, I'm lucky to only have a bit of spare money now that I'm not as crazy with technology and gadgets.

Gipsy, when are you coming around? I need at least one hour notice to prepare the pasta! You can try the 600 when you visit...

Bella, we didn't even taste that Cachaça that evening, but I thought the packaging was a big incentive to consume: no way you have "just a little drink" and then put it away.

Marc, no disrespect assumed in the images my pasta conjures up in your mind ;-)
I find the coat hangers are very convenient for temporary "storage" of the pasta. It's easy to move around, and there are lots of places where you can hang it in a kitchen. I usually make several kilos of pasta at a time. The kitchen has to be cleaned afterwards, better take advantage and make a big batch...

Gabriela, glad you enjoy the birds. I will most definitely try and shoot more.

When I left work, I couldn't lay my hands on my camera. It normally spends the day on my desk, so when I pack up to go in the evening it goes into my bag. I briefly wonder if my colleagues have played a joke on me. On my way back I can't stop thinking about it. Did I take it out of my bag when I got to work? I have a clear recollection of putting it in the bag when I left for work that morning, but little by little it dawns on me: it fell out of my bag when I took out my book and the MP3 player in the tram. Lost! It's lost! Damn!
And that's not the worst thing that's happened this week...

The other bit of good news is that I find my camera on the back seat of my mother's car. It must have fallen out of my bag when I came back on Tuesday night.

On our way back from Thonon, where I took my mother to the doctor, we were caught in a snow storm. It abated a little when we got home:Snow. Again.

Thanks for the visit, Lady, good to have you back on French soil, but glad that you actually went to Sicily to bring back all those gorgeous pictures.

Teresa, it would have been a sad loss, but I'd rather not have found it and the rest of the week gone smoothly...
It's not foie gras, just some plain pâté des bois, some pâté with a rather high content of liver, and lots of mushrooms in it. Delicious!

Bun, I am in the fortunate position of having to work only to buy toys. I have a lifestyle with low enough cost of living that a couple of months work per year is enough to sustain. When I buy toys, I buy them to enjoy and have fun. What else would I save money for? I normally buy the best I can afford, given the circumstances. When it comes to photography, I did the low cost thing over twenty years ago, and I was quite frustrated, especially on film. Now the limits are in my head, not with the equipment...
To get back to the Gitzo tripod, it's one I would buy again without second thoughts. I purchased it on the advice of Juza, who has a wonderful web site. He's the one that advised me to get the 600 when I hesitated between the 400f/2.8 and the 600f/4, and also recommended I got the Gitzo tripod with a Wimberley gimbal head. I'm glad I followed his advice.
His web site has quite a few articles about "hands on" reviews in the field, adorned with wonderful pictures, well worth the visit, even if you're not looking at purchasing equipment.

Ted, you're welcome, anytime really. Really. We should go for a beer one of these days...

Yes, you're right about the squirrels looking funny, Iramiro.

Ted, for a long time I've asked myself the question "When I next move, or go on a loooong trip, how much hassle is it going to be to take this along?" and ended up not purchasing the stuff (junk or not).
I'll have plenty of free time from mid May, so we'll plan something. I might even make it to Flickr @ Paris this year after all...

Gipsy, I *like* you hand-to-mouth description ;-)
My situation is the result of a bit of luck (sort of) to start with, and judicious (I'm purposefully avoiding the word "wise" here) choices lately.
Thanks for the wishes. Will give more details when I feel I can cope.

Eelend, it was indeed curious, as it kept an eye on me for quite a while.

Bun, if I cumulate the money I spent 20 years ago on film camera equipment, and what I spent on photo equipment over the last 18 month, I'm pretty sure it exceeds all I've ever spent on cars... But that's not really a reference. I'm the one who hitch-hikes to work every day ;-)

The salient event of the day is easy to choose: the Lausanne Flickr monthly meeting. Fariba invited us to her apartment, as last month event was a great success, mostly because it's difficult to mingle and talk to everybody in a restaurant.
The roof of Fariba's apartment building is accessible, with a flight of stairs rising through a trap-door, and we met early enough to enjoy the last light of the day over the town.

Rob, thanks for your visit, comments and favoring so many of my pics. It's been far too long since I last visited your stream.

Teresa, there's quite a long story attached to the device from the 2nd of april. In short, it's an Archos AV700, a mobile video recorder/player. Oh, flying high and just stepping off the edge like that with the beautiful surroundings. Oh my! Great shot.

Ray Brown? He's a (kick ass) double bass player. Did you mean James Brown?

I feel like I'm almost flying with you in this pic!!! {:->

Thanks Izas, it was wonderful indeed...

Ted, you should try it. I know a few good tandem pilots, for your next visit in the area...

Ellen, The view is indeed amazing, and the feeling wonderful.

Gipsy, as a nature lover, you should try it.

Lara, you're right of course! I corrected the entry. I do know Ray Brown, hence the confusion, and I agree with you, a great bass player! Do you also enjoy jazz?

2007-04-10 - Mardi 10 avril.

I managed to grab a bit of quality time at lunchtime today. The weather in Geneva is wonderful these days, and short skirts and light dresses are to be seen all over the town. A true delight for the eyes...

2007-04-11 - Mercredi 11 avril.

Just the average day at the office, but did the day get interesting as I got home... Gisèle and Maryse have been asking for quite a while that I teach them to make fresh pasta, so this is the day. We made a batch of fresh pasta, and I prepared a sea-food sauce with shrimps, prawns, coquilles saint Jaques, salmon and a few other ingredients, amonst which ginger.
Delicious evening...

We ended the meal with fresh Guarriguettes strawberries, fragrant and flavourful.

... and the food wasn't the best part of the evening...

Geneva in the springtime...pasta in the pot and average days at the office...good stuff. Still banging on the agenda.

i have not read close - just quick glances but 7 avril looked so much like...ah... work memory... ah... meersburg - where i washed dishes one summer 15 years ago - and very curious about underwater housing - something i need to look into - or continue to melt cameras - hahahah

i support the prevalence of food in this diary :)

Wow, paragliding looks AMAZING! I've been close to going parachuting before, but I've always bailed out because I'm pretty sure that the initial jump would just scare the life out of me and I'd probably bail out at that point anyway. Maybe paragliding is a nice alternative....

Izas, make no mistake, the food was good, but what followed was better...

Marc, the wine was Morgon, 2003, a decent wine, but nothing exceptionnal...

Gipsy, Yummy indeed.

Lara, we'll have to have a "Jazz Special" thread one of these days.

Ted, I'm not nagging. It's actually a good thing to get time with no pressure. BTW, you might want to keep an eye on the Flickr@Lausanne discussion about next month's meeting.

Jonathan, I hope I'm not going to melt my camera...

LBT, c'est le pied quand on prend son pied! ;-)

Iramiro, paragliding is very different from parachuting. First of all WE TAKE OFF. Only fools jump. Especially from an aeroplane in perfect working order... ;-)
If the thing above our head is not flying, we abort the flight and start over again, as simple as that (see further entry in my Flog, I missed a take-off yesterday).

2007-04-12 - Jeudi 12 avril.

A little technical hitch...
I took this picture, it's almost 10MB, but for some reason, Picasa refuses to see it bigger than 288x192 pixels. What's the point of having a 10 Mega pixel camera then, I ask you!
Technical hitch...

Anyway, it was a nice sunset...

2007-04-13 - Vendredi 13 avril.

Everybody's been going on about Friday the 13th, but I've read somewhere that it brings bad luck to be superstitious, so I behave as if this was just a normal Friday... ;-)

Quite often, on my way home, I pass "Place de Plainpalais" and the tram stop is adorned with bronze statues. The nice weather having made skirts and dresses de rigueur, I get quite a few opportunities for impromptu snapshots:

2007-04-14 - Samedi 14 avril.

I spend the gorgeous morning working around the house, I even mow the law (bleah!). I meet Gisèle for a walk in the forest, but there are too many disturbances to get good bird shots. After lunch, we take a nap under the cherry tree:

2007-04-15 - Dimanche 15 avril.

It's again a gorgeous day. I spend the morning doing various housekeeping chores, and the afternoon paragliding.
I have one 40 minutes flight, followed by a 30 minutes one. I land last in the setting sun. I'll post more details about the flights on my Flog, whenever I get the time...

2007-04-16 - Lundi 16 avril.

Ever since Iramiro started talking about slicing brains, I've had a craving for sheep's brains. On Saturday afternoon, when I went to the public library, I went to a butcher shop that's owned by a childhood friend and bought some. I cooked it very slowly in butter, and then déglassé with a few drops of raspberry vinegar...
Yummy! Tonight's supper was a treat!

I had brains of le sanglier when I was in Corsica. I wasn't particularly thrilled by it. Sounds like yours was better.
Hope you are doing well. Naps under flowering trees are certain to be healing.
