2007-08-09 - Vendredi 9 février.

The weather has been beautiful the whole day, and I stared wistfully at the mountains out of the office windows. There's been a tiny bit of snow that fell in the last few days, just enough to whiten the mountains all around Geneva.

On my way home, I was so engrossed in some hot SMSsing that I missed my usual tram stop. Instead of catching another bus or tram, I decided to enjoy the feeling of sprintime and walked to the point where I normally catch the bus to my hitch-hiking spot.

On my way, I passed "Le pont de la Machine", the sluice-gates that used to regulate the level of the Geneva lake.
Le pont de la machine

I took a couple of pictures of the Mont-Blanc, from the car of Patrick, my driver for the day. He resided in Siberia for a while and has fascinating stories to tell. The way home has seldom felt that short...

This time of the year is very nice: all the shops are adorning their windows with sexy stuff to make us buy more. While I pester against the commericalisation of every aspect of life, I don't mind life being made sexier. I'm sure I'd blow LadyBadTiming's horniness meter if we connected it...

2007-02-10 - Samedi 10 février.

Lazy day. I potter around the house, start looking at packing bags for the trip. The evening is more interesting, as I'm invited at Maryse's place for supper. I cook. I actually almost always cook when I'm invited. For supper I try to reproduce the dish I had at Le Lyrique. Except for the coriander sauce, everything comes out as I recall it from the Flickr meeting in Lausanne. I'll work on the coriander sauce when I actually find a plentiful supply of that fragrant herb.
Test dish...
Supper is only a small part of the pleasures that evening. The company is even better...

2007-02-11 - Dimanche 11 février.

Another lazy day. It's raining. I read in bed, get up late, have a huuuuge pot of tea and read a couple of articles online. A quote I particularly liked from an article in "The Guardian". 'It matters that teenagers in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, South Korea, Mexico, China, Taiwan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Nigeria and Argentina have come to despise America and the American people despite - or precisely because of - their being eager consumers of American culture.' The greatest antipathy is directed at the American President. As Markovits has it: 'Bush represents to Europeans the quintessential ugly American: arrogant, uncouth, uncultured, ignorant, inconsiderate, and aggressive.'
We have to keep reminding ourselves that it's mostly their leaders, not all 'Merikuns are like that...

In the afternoon, I go to the woods to take the telelens for a walk. No birds, there's too much wind. The few that venture to fly are blown along at a hundred kilometers an hour. The autofocus complains...
In the woods...

Yes, I often feel like an Ugly American. This country is so embarrasing sometimes. When I travel in Europe, I don't feel any hatred towards individuals from the U.S. but I have never traveled in the middle east. C'est très dificile, n'est-ce pas?

Hello - I stop by often...comments are few however. I really like your work, your philosophy and your city (Lausanne). I come to visit a couple of times per year to work at the univ hospital.

Reason to comment - ugly americans. My everyday task (for the last 8 years living in Paris and working all over EU, Africa and Middle East)...my everyday task is to in some small way erase the impression of ugly and paint one of tolerance. There are many americans here with the same task...look for them.

I too have a keen and sharp embarassment for our current leadership. Maybe in a couple of years he can retire??

The highlight of the day is most definitely the evening meal in a Thai restaurant. There is this lovely place in one of the old town streets, called Chiang Mai. Every time I've been there I've had a lovely experience. The food is as good as the one I remember from Natti's Thai Kitchen in Port Elizabeth. And it's a non smoking restaurant too, so you can really enjoy the flavours.

I went there with Gisèle, it was a very enjoyable evening...

Valentine Day.

I normally make a point of celebrating "holy" days on a day different to everybody else. The meal at the Thai restaurant in part was my attempt at Valentine Day, and it was a good one.
I had planned to take the day off work for a long week-end in Venice, to see the Carnival. Things didn't quite go the way we planned it, so I ended up going to the office. I should have received my Lensbabies, but UPS messed it up. The parcel was sent from the 'Sates, so I guess they have a good excuse for having confused Basel with Geneva. At least they got the country right! This was the biggest disappointment of the day, but everything else went up from there, including an improvised photosession with Gisèle on the theme of VD:
Valentine Day
I posted a similar photo on my stream, in colour, I'm not sure which I prefer...

2007-02-15 - Jeudi 15 février.

Gisèle has a few issues to sort out until mid-morning, and we get on the road to cross part of Switzerland, Piedmont and Lombardy. On the way, we stop at Arona, on the shore of the Lago di Stresa, one of the beautiful lakes in the North of Italy:
Lago di Stresa
As is usually my custom, I haven't booked anything in advance. We find a lovely hotel in the countryside not far from Treviso, about an hour's drive from Venice. It's really a pitty we ate on the road. We pester the kitchen staff for "just a salad", and begrudgingly accept to have a risotto as a starter. This is one of the best risottos I've ever had in my life, and we then discover that this restaurant is considered amongst of the best in Italy!
The cheese platter was amazing too...

2007-02-16 - Vendredi 16 février.

After going to bed quite late (risotto, remember?), and going to sleep even later, we decide to enjoy the view from the bed before breakfast. We're in no rush to reach Venice and take in the view from the room window. The countryside is peaceful.
Veneto

We then have a very pleasant breakfast. All the other guests have left, and the personel is very discreet, leaving us on our own to enjoy a quiet contemplative time, stretching in the morning sunshine...
A short hop on the autostrada gets us to Venice in time to find our hotel before we go for lunch in the vicinity of il ponte di Rialto.
We spend the afternoon walking around the little streets, having our make-up fixed in piazza San Marco and generally having a good time looking at all the dressed-up people.
That evening, we book two tickets for a concert given the next night. On the program, Vivaldi (of course), Geminiani and Paganini. Just outside, on the square, a musician is giving a mandolin serenade. No one stops and there is vey little money in his upturned hat. After taking the picture, I decide to do a little experiment. We stand in front of the musician, enjoying the music. After a short while, a small crowd has formed, people stop and listen. I call that the sheep effect...

Overall a gorgeous day. So nice in fact that I feel like giving a reading on LBT's HL: it's a solid 5 the whole day, peaking in the red at 6.5 at times...

2007-02-17 - Samedi 17 février.

The hotel is very nice, and although there's a bit of activity in the streets below, the absence of car noises makes it very different from being anywhere else in the world.

Gondoliere

We catch il vaporetto to get close to the station to a shop we'd seen the day before and fetch a spare pair of shoes from the car. On the way back, we make a turn near Piazza San Marco, but seeing the crowd, we remain on the side to reach a street and escape to more quiet streets. We go and fetch a few slices of pizza, a calzone and a rottolo for lunch. There are so many people around that we have to take refuge in the hotel to have a siesta...
The concert that night is very nice, and the mandolin player is present again on the square when we come out, but he doesn't give us a chance to repeat the previous day's experiment: his sit-in is finished, he folds his seat and leaves.

Another day that bursts LBT's HL meter, but siestas have a tendency to do that, don't they?

2007-02-18 - Dimanche 18 février.

We have decided to leave leisurely and take our time to drive home. As we're about to get the car out of the parking, Gisèle's phone rings. She looks at it and asks me why I'm calling her. I put my hand to my pocket at the same time as the explanation downs on me: the chambermaid from the hotel is probably trying to warn us... So it's back on the vaporetto to rush back to the hotel and come back before the parking expires.

Racing

We make the trip back with five minutes to spare. I'm quite proud of my navigation skills for having picked the faster route there and back...

The rest of the day is spent on the road, getting home.

A memorable week-end indeed...

As I get home, I look at the sky to enjoy the sunset, and I notice the contrail the setting sun is highlighting:
Contrails at sunset

I count the contrails, I can actually see 29 of them in the sky at that moment. We're right under a "highway" in Haute-Savoie (the whole Alps, really). The pollution in this area is a big advantage, for sunset photographs. Can't really think of anything else positive that's happened in this region over the last twenty years...

Yup, it's definitely not only "the others", we're all complicit in the maintaining of the current order.
What can you do...

Satrina, a wonderful week-end it was. The gondola is almost an accident: the other half of the gondola was occupied by a film crew (probably reporters) and I didn't want to show _that_, but we were on the vaporetto and I shot a series of pictures without having too much control on the point of view...

Collard, I'm sure you've planned an itenary already, but in case you haven't, have a look at the web site of the Charme & relax association of Italian hotels. The one we stayed in Trissino was part of that association, and they had a booklet in the room with all the others in it, where we found the Venice one. The descriptions in the booklet and the website are not over-hyped and I'll definitely pick from that list on my future visits to Italy. In any case, I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip, and look forward to the pictures you're going to bring us back.

On my way from work, the sun reflexion on the water and the menacing clouds created a beautiful picture. I had to take the camera out and take a shot through the bus window. Next time I'll catch a bus with clean windows ;-)

Sunset in Geneva

Islands and hurricanes
Wind blows in from Jersey
It floats across the bay into the open ocean
It's a good day to run away
Freedom is a scary thing
Not many people really want it

Me, I keep my distance
I'm always leaving. That's just my way
Cool water
Now you're just another speck on the horizon
Just another speck on the sea
Cool water, cool me

Good Morning - you are up early I see ! I didn't realize that you were 2 hours away from Lausanne when the invitation was sent out...invitation sincere but would not have wanted you to miss out on family visit.

We were exhausted anyway by the time we had some dinner! The sunset was beautiful but fog was our only morning friend. Back inParis now ...in recovery (not to mention rehab !!)

Great pigeon photo! I love photos that show the suspension of flight.

I hope you and your brother are enjoying each other's company.

Thanks for visiting, Cristel. In a way it still feels like a new lens: I still have to think about the controls and where to put my hands. I'll consider it an "old" lens when I can just shoot with it without having to think about the act of shooting. Still need quite q lot of practice to get there.

Ted, I noticed Le Cheval Blanc on our way back from the Flickr meeting on Wednesday night (technically Thursday morning, actually). Good to hear you enjoyed the sunset. I can almost see Lausanne from my house (not the center of the town, but its Western suburbs).

Satrina, I was inspired by La Maquisarde's picture for the pigeon shot.

Gispy, thank you for answering my questions, I'll probably have more after experimenting this week-end...

Lady, they're such docile birds that they make good models for practice.

Iramiro, family is family (said with an Italian accent).

2007-03-04 - Dimanche 4 mars.

It's a rather good day, the weather is very nice and I take a late morning walk to the woods with my nephews. I teach them to walk slowly and not make too much noise, but the weather is so nice that there are a lot of other people walking around, and after a while they get bored and make a lot of noise so we head back home.

In the afternoon, I go to Très-Le-Mont, to one of our paragliding club take offs, but the wind is blowing the wrong way so I have to walk down. It was a nice walk nevertheless.

Hell of a day at the office, no time to even think about taking a picture, so to relax in the evening I decide to add another knot to the collection:

I borrowed this book from the library before, and I liked it very much, I think Jeanne Moreau is a very good actress, with a very sexy voice, and her choice of love songs is very good.
Reading...

Moi je t'offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Où il ne pleut pas
Je creuserai la terre
Jusqu'après ma mort
Pour couvrir ton corps
D'or et de lumière
Je ferai un domaine
Où l'amour sera roi
Où l'amour sera loi
Où tu seras reine

2007-03-07 - Mercredi 7 mars.

Flickr meeting day in Lausanne! For the past few reunions, we've met in restaurants, but this time, Caroline is hosting the meeting at her place, a spacious flat in town.

A lot of fun is had by all...

I get home just before 3 in the morning on Thursday. I have just under two hours sleep before I get up to travel back to Geneva...

No photo today. I learnt that my aunt Aure (my father's brother's wife) died yesterday. It was expected but it doesn't make it any less sad...

2007-03-09 - Vendredi 9 mars.

I know Summer is on its way when I can see the lights of dawn when I get up in the morning...

Dawn

Thank goodness it's Friday. This week has been plenty long enough, and the day ended up being hell. My plans for the evening 5Sushi take aways and a movie with Gisèle) had to be canned as I was at the office until after 19:00. I'm really looking forward to the end of this contract.

Pigeons are also called "rock doves." Sounds so much nicer, doesn't it?

Which knot were you working on?

I really like the portrait on 7 Mar. I missed the Portland Flickr gathering on the 8th... oops. I'll go next time...

Have a good weekend!

Just want to come back on the photo of the Jeanne Moreau's book..
yes she is a very good actress and her voice si very sexy... I have not read this book yet but sure I will..your illustration with the song of Jacques Brel "Ne me quitte pas" is a very good choice even if this is a sad love song... For me this is the most beautiful love song.... Sorry for my bad english writing, I keep on with french... Le poids de chaque mot de cette chanson résonne dans ton corps et dans ta tête lorsque tu as vécu une séparation, ou un amour impossible.... la chanson d'amour par excellence...

Love the bird shot in March 4th and the colors in March 5th but my favorite is between the portrait in March 7th and the landscape in your last post...

After much thought and going back and forth, the landscape won because it has a very nice mood

2007-03-10 - Samedi 10 mars.

Busy day, lots of things to do, and the feeling at the end of the day that nothing was done...

Sunset

The colour of sunsets in the area really worries me. There isn't as much dust in the air as in Africa, and the spectacular nature of the sky only comes from the brown/orange shit spewed in the ambiant atmosphere by cars and industrial plants. We've had a long period without significant wind, and the air quality is becoming bad at the bottom of the valleys.
ParaScubaSailor 11 years ago
Erica, "Rock Doves" sounds indeed a bit better, but I can't shake the feeling that those birds are soooo stooopid!

Lady, thanks for the visit.

Cristel, I like Brel, he puts a lot of feeling in each of his songs.

Satrina, the daybreak is really a special moment.

Bun, thanks for the visit. I'm glad you enjoy the photos.

Ted, no worry: I'm not the type that jumps out of a plane in perfect working order. We paragliders do it properly: we make sure the glider flies before we take off ;-)
For me, the moment I got it was when I realised we don't jump, we take off...

Sorry all for the long silence. I visited some of your streams in small snatched moments during my lunch breaks, but didn't have enough time to leave the comments I wanted to. Things are probably not going to get better until I stop working, and then I'll lose my DSL Internet access when I fly away, so better get used to seeing me in bursts ;-)

2007-03-11 - Dimanche 11 mars.

Relaxing day. Went for a leisurely walk in the woods with Gisèle, under the pretense to take photos of birds, but we spent most of the time talking.

Came across a tree I hadn't noticed before. Some kids probably inscribed their love many years ago. I wonder what happened to that love... Did they go on getting married, having children, getting divorced and hating each other? Or am I too cynical?
Old writings...

It was really good being in such balmy weather. Hurray for global warming!

2007-03-12 - Lundi 12 mars.

At the public library, on Saturday, I checked out a couple of cartoons (bédés in French) from Bilal. He was one of the pioneering cartoonist in the 70s, creating a new genre of cartoons that haven't aged much.

Bilal

The first issue of that story was "La Foire aux Immortels", I still have it in one of the boxes in the attic. I'm glad to see that he continued work in that line, as the second and third issues came out in 1986 and 1992...

2007-03-13 - Mardi 13 mars.

Video evening. At the recent Flickr gathering in Lausanne, Caroline lent me a set of DVDs of "La voie Jackson". It's an old movie made for TV in 1981, I missed it as by that time I'd given up on TV. I'm glad it came out on DVD, I wouldn't have known it otherwise.

La voie Jackson

The interesting bit of trivia is that it's based on a true story, and filmed in Chamonix.

Sometimes in life you receive something totally unexpected. Best to be grateful and appreciate the gift than try to find a reason that might not exist.

Sunset normally marks the end of the day, but it was only starting...

I've been meaning to go and explore the estuary of La Dranse, a river that comes from the mountains into the lake near Thonon. I was delighted to realise there is a nature reserve, with a pond full of bird life.

A great day...
