Hi Everybody,

Every year at the beginning of the year we start with a lot of good resolutions
- making and posting a daily photo on this Photo Diary is one of the many resolutions that I´ve made this year!
I hope to provide you with some appealing photos but most of the the time they will probably just reflect my daily life, but I´ll do my best to spice it up a little bit.
Enjoy and a Phototastic 2007!

Hey dda1605, china town is quite small in antwerp but you have a few streets where there are lots of chinese supermarkets and little restaurants where you can enjoy the most delicious won ton soups. They even have the typical chinese lions garding the main street.
You can find chinatown in the neighbourhood of the central station. Enjoy your stay!

15 feb 2007 going away party

We had a going away party for one of my collegues. He goes back home to germany. He was a little bit sad to leave Belgium and he is certainly going to miss our excellent beer. Hence the coaster of a quite new beer in Belgium, Vedett. It´s become a very popular beer. So, try it out if you get the chance.

@magpie33 it´s the manual from my new car... so that I can find the right little button to start the A/C :-)

@ collardsgreens about the beer, I don´t like beer very much, I´m more of a wine person. But that´s also not such a good combo with driving. So I´ll stick to the more alcohol free stuff when driving.

17 feb 2007 Mother daughter thing

My mum and I went shopping on saturday afternoon. Strolling around in Antwerp, looking at pretty things, we went to the market and bought some lovely flowers, went for a cup of tea/coffee,...
Just an example of a few nice things to do with your mum.

My mum bought this funny hat.

Seems like I have to go to the supermarket tomorrow. Nothing left in the fridge besides 2 bottles of champagne, some old muchrooms which will probably taste like rubber when I should decide to prepare them and some Ketchup & Co.

And I hate going to the supermarket on a friday evening!

Just relaxing, sofa, a drink and nice fire burning in the fireplace...
What do you need more on a friday evening?

I got to know this heavenly drink on one of my holidays in Italy. They mix it with white wine and put an olive in it (just like in a martini). If you're in Italy you should try it.

27 February 2007 Green haze

Pharmacy

When going to the supermarket ( yes, my fridge still looked quite empty when opening it) I passed the nearby pharmacy. I quite liked the green haze of the neon sign. Especially when it´s that twilight moment, not really light but also not quite dark enough.

You can see quite a few of these typical pharmacy signs in my neighbourhood. There are a least 3 pharmacies in the same street. How they all earn their living is a mistery to me.

It´s has been already 2 months since the project started (time flies!) and I must say that I´m quite pleased with the results of the photos, comments and reactions from all you guys. I visit peoples postings on a regular base, leave some comments behind (Yes, I should leave comments more often but I have a very, very, very slow internet connection so it takes ages to upload all the photos, faster connection is being arranged). Sometimes it´s easy to find a topic to post a photo but sometimes I do have to be a little bit creative.
I suppose it will get more difficult when the months pass by. But up till now still enjoying it and looking forward to what´s to come.

Went for a walk in the city and saw these ladies sitting on a bench. Older people move me... It makes me feel happy that they can just sit there and chat about all sorts of things. And that they propably have been friends for years and years. They also make an effort to look good to go to the city, there best coat, nice glases, earrings,... Perhaps a coffee later with a little piece of cake or a delicious belgian chocolate and some more chatting with friends. Life can be beautifull on a sunday afternoon

Today I went to an exhibition/performance in the abandonned military hospital in Antwerp. These building have been abandonned for over a decade and the decay is starting to set in. Some artists have seen the possibility to rent a part to have an exhibition of their work. I " secretly " wondered off a little bit on the site to have a look at the buildings. Took some photos of course! They (projectdevelopers) are going to turn this site into a trendy livingspace. Can´t wait to see the result but we´ll probably have to wait another decade before the city of antwerp and the belgian army will have reached an agreement on how to move forward.

Russian elderly die in home fire
The fire broke out at a home in the village of Kamyshevatskaya, in the Krasnodar region, near the Black Sea.
It started early on Tuesday morning, an official said, but firefighting crews did not arrive from Yeysk, 50km (30 miles) away, for more than an hour.
There had been 93 people in the building, officials say.

Thank god for fire-hydrants!

28 March 2007 Chicken or Egg?

I´ve searching the net and our electronic library at work looking for some answers.
On friday some of my colleagues and I have planned a brainstorm-session on a scientific problem (I work for a pharmaceutical company). So in order to be prepared I was looking for some background info. Once you start browsing through some scientific articles you sometimes get the feeling to be totally lost. Sometimes you find contradictions, sometimes you don´t really seem to find what you need, but after a few hours you end up with a pile of articles on your desk, five different colours of fluo highlighters, and even more ideas to test in the lab and the knowledge that there´s so much out there and that you can only know a very very very small fraction of it...

Therefore my egg-picture : What was first the chicken or the egg?

30 March 2007 Anybody home?

If I pass such a window on the street I try to imagine what is going on on the other side of the window? Happy family ? Someone who lives alone and is quite lonely, someone who tries to make a home from this house by putting some plastic or silk flowers on his/her windowsill..I ´ll never know but sometimes imagination or fantasy is more beautifull than reality.
