Somewhere doing something
24 May 2007

Another too tired, too busy brain dead day.

Had a really stressful launch function at work with a crapload of super important people. The actual event went pretty well, so I guess that's a good thing.

Came home from work and just crashed out.

I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End with a bunch of friends tonight.

It only opened yesterday, so the cinema was nearly bursting at the seams.

Loved the movie, loved the company.

Had a lovely and well needed sleep in before heading out to lunch with a bunch of new people at my Pastor's house. I've been going to this church for over a year now, but only managed to get along to a welcome lunch just now.

It was great to meet some of the faces I've been seeing around over the last little while.

Afterwards, I managed to pop in and see my brother's kids before they went back to their Mum's.

Looking forward to an early night!!

did they make you wear name tags? um... i know you're not talking about this, but i just thought i'd mention it... church singles mixers are only half the fun they sound like they'd be. this is true at least of my own church. Baptists are great at potlucks but crap at throwing parties... such has been my experience
Lalalian Posted 12 years ago. Edited by Lalalian (member) 12 years ago
HAA HAA!!!! Yes, we did wear nametags.

It wasn't a singles mixer. It was just for newbies to the church. Actually, I think I was the only single person there out of about 30 people (apart from the kids who should be too young to care about that stuff).

I went to a baptist church for about 20yrs, so I totally know about the potluck dinners and bad parties. I think I had my life's ration of bush dances (Aussie version of barn dance, I guess) by the time I hit 21yrs old.

From there I moved on to a Penti one for about 6yrs which was a huge culture shock with the dancing and prancing about. It was the perfect place for the stuff I was going through at the time.

Now I'm going to an AOG that seems to have a lot of the good stuff from both of my previous experiences, plus a whole lot more (not saying that it's perfect by any means, but a nice balance). I'm really happy there and have made friends with some amazing people who are absolutely nuts (in the good way).

Oh yeah...

Tonight at church I have to sing Aretha Franklin's "Respect".

It's a bloody hard song and I'm a bit nervous... {:-/

We don't have pews. The generously sized seats are comfortably cushioned.

Well, it went OK. Maybe (actually, definately) not as good as Aretha, but still not a bad effort. Stumbled over a few places, but all in all I'm relatively happyish with the result.

Kinda wish I'd asked the sound guy to record it, but I'm not sure if I could stand the pain of hearing it.

Loopy Lead

I was feeling pretty blah today (actually, for most of the last week), so I took the day off work to have a rest.

Spent the day pottering around home and having lovely naps. Pity the neighbours are having building done...

Went to band rehearsal tonight. We spent most of the night talking, laughing and listening to possible tracks to be played this Sunday night. A couple of the guys tried to freak out the guy who is doing the song by suggesting a couple of choice Tom Waits tunes like "Filipino Box Spring Hog"... hee hee {:->

The theme for the sermon is Tenacity and a couple of us (I would be one of them) REALLY wanted to do "Whip It" by Devo, but the winner was Sam & Dave's "Hold on, I'm Coming" which will be equally cool.

070601 trivia.jpg

Tonight was the big fundraiser for the school my friend Deb works at. It's for the grade 7 kids to go down to Canberra for an excursion.

The school is in a low socio-economic area and some of the kids have hardly ever been out of their local area, so this is a huge thing for them to be able to go halfway across the country.

So the event was a trivia night and it was heaps of fun. Our table didn't win the competition, but we did score pretty well from the raffles.

I came away with a bottle of Johnny Walker {:->

Afterwards, we went to check out the second half of our friend Andrew's gig. Good times!!

I went to a vocal worshop today with the other singers from the band at church.

It was such a great day. The guest speakers were really informative, interacted well with the audience and gave really practical advice that is fairly easy-ish to apply.

Other things from the sessions are probably not so easy, but really important for singers to consider when embarking on the journey ie. being comfortable with who you are, learning how to tell a story etc, etc, etc...

One of the sessions was a jazz & improv one which was pretty cool. The scary bit was at the end when she got everyone to sing a basic line to jazz standards and then passed the microphone around so each of us (all 40-50 of us!!!) could trade fours to scat over the top. SCARY!!!!!!!!

These pix are in the foyer of the complex we were in. I love them!!

I made some jewellery tonight.

One piece is for a friend's birthday gift and one is for me.

Nothing of particular interest happened today, but it was raining when I got to my station and I didn't have an umbrella.

Now I'm all rugged up and warm and enjoying the sound of raindrops falling outside.

I met Larissa for a catch up after work this afternoon at a lovely cafe.

It's probably one of my favourite places because I feel very posh whenever I go there.

All the beverages are served on trays with the ingredients in separate jugs so you can mix them to your own taste and the nibbles arrive on beautiful little serving dishes.

I'm not really a girly girl, but I do enjoy tea parties every now and then.

It's still raining here. Now it's been over 24hrs which is fabulous. I just hope that some of it is hitting the reservoirs...

Veddy posh photo, dahling!

Here's to the rain.

By the way, remember the shocking comment I made that not a drop of rain is expected to fall hereabouts until September? Well, that very morning, it drizzled a little as I drove out of town to work. Later, I am told, it actually rained--not enough to relieve our near drought condition.
Lalalian 12 years ago
Wow, cool!!

Yeah, ours isn't enough to break the drought either, but at least most people's water tanks will get filled up.
Dragonhide 12 years ago
It has to be so scary to be in a situation where you think you might not have water to do what you need to do....

Fortunately I live next to a babbling creek.. so if all hits hell and we lose power for a week at a time (Happened twice in the past year BTW) we still have water. We don't have city water, and usually water still flows even without power due to water towers and such. We have a well instead, that needs a pump.

But being next to the creek, we always have water for our toilets to work, to drink (if properly treated, which I have the kit for) and so on.

It has to be unnerving sometimes to live in a place that for all purposes is a desert if not for modern technology (like much of California is)

Anyway- I think that's pretty damn awesome how they let you mix the drinks yourself by bringing you everything you need.. I never seen that before-- great idea. :)
Lalalian 12 years ago
Yeah, it is a bit scary thinking that drinkable water could run out. Just gotta keep praying for rain, I guess.

The drinkies are awesome. They do it for the coffees as well. My fave hot bevvie there is a mochagato, which is a massive cup half filled with ice cream. You then pour the coffee and hot chocolate over the top

This is one of my colleagues.

Jenny is a notorious early starter and super late finisher but today she left the office just after 5pm, so we had to take this photo to prove that it actually happened.

I had probably the crappest day that I've ever had at work in the last decade and spent most of the day either in tears or on the verge of tears.

Things haven't improved much since the "new regime" was announced back in February, I'm having on going problems with someone who is supposed to be friend and then came home to discover that my cat had thrown up the entire contents of her stomach all over the dining room floor.

Fortunately the last problem was not on the carpet and was easily cleaned up...

The good news is that we've got a long weekend coming up and I've got all sorts of lovely things planned {:->

Finished for the day

I took the train up to the Sunshine Coast (about 2 hours north of here) to spend some time with my friend Renata at her family's holiday house.

Renata met me at the train and then we tootled up to Montville, which is a cool little village in the hinterland that has great little shops selling all sorts of interesting handmade stuff and fabulous eateries.

Every man and his dog also decided to go there, so we spent most of our time dodging bodies.

We did manage to find a lovely restaurant that wasn't too packed out and had the added bonus of gorgeous views over the valley and out to the coastline.

Afterwards, we went to sit by the beach to talk more and soak in some vitamin D. The fresh air was wonderful.

I realised that I haven't spent much time outside lately (apart from walking to and fro the train) and I really need to make the effort. Perhaps spending some more lunchtimes in the Botanic Gardens could be in order.

We also spent time sitting around the house reading (and laughing at) trashy magazines and tinting each other's eyelashes {:->

drab chicken [deleted] 12 years ago
i like bacon! bacon is GOOD. i tend to avoid it because salt does bloaty things to my body but i love me some bacon. i've never heard of rocket jam. it sounds intriguing and slightly dangerous.

also, and i almost didn't say this, i want to take a moment to say that i am utterly charmed by your casual use of the word 'tootled'. how cute is that? it's perhaps one of the most adorable things i've read. more people should say 'tootle'.

*tootles off to bed
Lalalian 12 years ago
Bacon is awesome.

Actually, it was chilli jam which was really lovely and sweet.

Rocket is a green leafy thing (much like a weed someone pulls from the garden) that was included on the menu description. To me is just garnish because it's got a really strong flavour that I don't much care for.

It is also difficult to control and generally leaves me with food splattered all about the place when the carefully folded leaves come undone like they are spring-loaded.

Sleep well, dearie {:->

RE: Jun 9 -- I can't imagine it ever being cold in Australia. Geez -- I'm gonna have to readjust my view of the world. Maybe we have different definitions of 'cold'.

Does Australia have different climates? Some more tropical, some less so.

Excuse my ignorance here ... but all of my impressions of Australia were formed from the movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Dusty outbacks with a smattering of gay men :)

Hi Rick.

Well, Brisbane winter is definately not as cold as some other places in the world, but because it gets so hot here most houses are not built for cooler weather so it can feel colder.

The extremes of temperature that I can recall experiencing here range from -8 deg C to 46 deg C.

The southern part of the country has snow fields in some areas in winter, but the north is definately tropical with monsoonal rains, stifling humidity etc during summer.

The Palace

A couple of days ago, my friend Donna became an Aussie citizen.

Her hubby organised a surprise BBQ for today with friends and family. I missed the big "surprise" moment, but Donna was pretty chuffed that everyone came to celebrate with her.

Getting home was a bit of a mission. There was work being done on the railway and it meant waiting for eons for a bus to get around the other side to where the train was.

I'm generally fairly OK when it happens and just take things as they come. Variety is the spice of life and all that sort of thing, but WOW... some people get really stressed and cranky about it. It kinda makes me want to laugh, but I don't think that would help the people in question feel any better about the situation.

Quiet night at home tonight with some TV viewing and maybe a bit of reading.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say hi to my friend Pete, who is a semi-regular, but relatively silent visitor here... Hi Pete, love your gutz {:->

oh. i KNOW that cold! but as i am on the opposite to that right now, i will try to not think about what's to come ... pretty soon.
Lalalian 12 years ago
Yeah. Maybe if you ignore it, it will stay away for a bit longer {:->

:( Violence like that when you witness it is such a horrible experience... I'm glad you;re OK.

That is one of the things I do not miss living in the city.

20 Jun 2007

No photo again.

Busy day and worked pretty late.

It was the coldest June day on record for 90 years and so windy.

When I finally got home I wrapped myself up like a mummy trying to keep warm.

Late night traffic

Man, who would have thought there'd be a traffic jam at 10:30pm in the evening?

We were here for aaaaaaaages. In the end, I hopped out and walked to the train station so Deb and Katharine could take a side street to get home.

Work was totally craptacular today.

I'm feeling so worn out by everything that's been going on lately. I'm tired of being treated badly and feeling too tired to do the things that I want to in the evenings and on the weekends.

By the time my collegues and I had staggered through the day and enjoyed a couple of quiet drinks I really wanted to go home, but I pushed through the blah-ness of it all and went to a gathering at Shelley and Jason's place to celebrate Jase finishing exams.

I'm so glad I went. It was great to be around some of my favourite peeps to chat and share a few laughs.

Zinnia & me

Got my hair cut and coloured today, then went around to my brother's place to hang out with the family.

* sigh *

I've missed them lately and it was lovely to just spend time with them and get some good hugs {:->

I always enjoy catching up on your photostream -- forgive the tardy comments, but here's my two cents....

Love Priscilla and Muriel's wedding, but even though it take's place in Sydney, I'd have to say my all time fav Aussie flick is Strictly Ballroom. Also really love Rabbit Proof Fence.

This last photo is simply gorgeous -- the love just emanates from it.

"too tired to do things I want to do in the evenings and weekends" ditto.... i think it's something that happens at our age.... they tell me exercise would help... and I know it does, but it's a vicious circle and i'm too tired to motivate myself to exercise.

Yeah, it is something that happens when you get to your age. But hang in there for your second wind to come when you get my age. Actually, I just get up hella early and take pictures, then fall asleep at work. So, I guess I would add, it helps to be running things by the time you get to be my age. Then, even if you don't feel so hot, at least you can take it out on your underlings.

*mental note: get some underlings
drab chicken [deleted] 12 years ago
haha! on behalf of all underlings, i'd just like to take this moment to huff

Hey guys. Well, I'm not so sure it's just an age thing. Working for an interfearing control freak tends to take it out of you.

I might have to find myself some underlings too, cuz I wouldn't mind taking photos in the mornings and having nanna naps in the afternoons while they beaver away {:->

Yeah, Bella. Strictly Ballroom is one of my all time faves too!!!

Today was really cool.

The band was rockin' for both services and we had heaps of fun. It's so good to get to play with such awesome musos who are lovely people as well.

25 Jun 2007

Well, it's nearly midnight but I'm too tired to think of anything interesting to photograph.

Work was OK, caught up with a friend for lunch, called a friend that I haven't seen for a few weeks.

It's raining and late.

Going to bed now.

23rd.. Man, what a gorgeous picture, I can see the family resemble.. too cute.

Hang in there and imagine your boss in pink polka-dot underwear while being an ass to you. Trust me, the grin you will have will drive them mad.

Thanks Tim.

I'm not sure if I could live with the mental scarring that image would leave... haa haa!! {:->

Rain walker

It's been raining pretty much all day. The really nice, gentle rain that makes you want to stay in bed reading and drinking hot chocolate.

Unfortunately, I had to get up and go to the office.

Ah well...

After work, I walked across the river to meet some friends and went to see Bridge to Terabithia at the movies.

It was pretty good and there were a few sneaky moments that made some tears squish out.

One more day until my holidays start...

Had a busy day getting things finished before going on 2 weeks holidays.

Can you send that lovely blanket to me in my wintertime, so we can do a seasonal northern southern swap?
