Romain S. Donadio 2:59pm, 2 January 2007
Well in fact I'll be forty in couple of weeks but still, 2007 will be the year of my fortieth revolution around the sun.

For this 2007 daily photo diary, I've decided to only use film. I'll be carrying around a Canonet QL17 that will be loaded with a 36-exposure film. I will allow myself to shoot only one shot on this film per day. So basically, exposure #1 will have the shot for the first day of the month, exposure #2, the second of the month and so on. At the end of the month, I will get the film processed and scanned and will post all the pictures at once (in different messages) in this thread. Every pictures will be posted whether they're good or not.

Latest picture.

Oooops! Something went wrong with my camera on sunday. I was invited to share a nice lunch and "la galette des rois" at Frère Jacques's house. I decided that my picture of the day would be Jim (aka Frère Jacques) with the crown on his head and a glass of champagne in his hand. But as I was ready to shoot, the shutter got stuck and I couldn't make it work. Opening the camera would release the rewinding system and which will allow me to rewind the shutter mecanism. So I locked myself in the darkest closet in the house and covered myself with a blanket and open the camera with the film in it. As planned, this manipulation did unlock the rewinding system and I was able to rewind the shutter. But still it wouldn't shoot. So I decided to transfer the film to my other Canonet which is working perfectly well.
Anyway I'm worried that all those manipulation may have affected the pictures I took since the first of January until yesterday. But nevertheless, what ever happen to them I'll post them here as I promised earlier in this thread. And who knows, maybe this incident has produced some interresting effect on the shots. Will see after processing.

LadyBadTiming: As I said in my intro, I'll be posting my picture at the of the month when I'll have my 36 exposure film process. And yes 40 years, if old, doesn't mean ugly. But unfortunatly for me, 40 does mean old and ugly. :-)

@ Italian papillon: agree, would love to do something like that if I had the photographing skills - but I need at least 10 photos a day, just to shamelessly post one (and often that one isn't any good either). But it is fun :-)

Thanks all of you for your comments and encouragement. About the skills, film photography doesn't require more skills than digital photography, the technique is more or less identical. The only major difference is that with film there's no way to see what you've just capture unless the film is processed. But if you know how to frame and set you exposure right, then you've got the skills to shoot film. You just need to think a little more before releasing the shutter. That's what this project is about really, force me to think a bit more before shooting. After all this years in digital world, like ILIGHT said earlier, I too became a button pusher and I thought this project would be a great opportunity to get back to the roots.

Heuuuu.... les photos.... heuuuu... le rouleau est toujours dans mon sac. Je n'es pas encore eu le temps de le porter au labo.

In fact the roll is still in my bag, I didn't have the time to bring it to the lab (I'm still at work when I'm writing those lines and it's almost 8pm). I'm hoping to bring them to the lab tomorrow and get them back on saturday.

Although, I think that something went terribly wrong with the roll. Actually, it's really weird what happen. Last night, I took the 31st and last picture for January entries. Since, I still had 5 exposure left I went on shooting to finish the roll. I reach exposure #36, shoot it and expected the film to lock itself when trying to rewind the camera. It didn't and moved to exposure #37. Remember (read above), on the 6th I had a problem with the initial camera I was using and I had to transfer the film to a another camera which is always quite tricky thing to do. So I figured that the film wasn't well adjusted when I moved it to the other camera. Probably, two exposures will be overlapped (which could be fun) and I now have an extra exposure to shoot. I shoot number 37 and rewind the camera expecting the film to lock... it moved to 38!!! Oh no!!!! Film is broken!!! Shoot again... 39!!!!! Aaaargh 40!!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarghhh 41!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh
I rushed home. Found the darkest place in my apartment. Placed the camera in a bag. Switch off all the lights. Cover myself with a blanket and open the camera. And with only my fingers try to guess what happen. But there was no broken film in the camera and I was surprised to see the film was actually rewind back to the canister.
The thing is that I don't remember rewinding the film. Also when rewinding the film the exposure counter should go back to 0 and this time it wasn't reseted. The only problem I can see is that I didn't loaded the film correctly when I transfered it to the other camera. Which would mean that I will have only 6 pictures for the 6 first days of January to post on my diary. My diary is fucked!! (at least for January)
One thing though, I remember checking, from time to time, if the films rewinding handle was moving when I was rewinding the camera's shutter and I remember clearly seeing it moving which always indicate that the film is properly loaded.

Still, I think I'm fucked... :-(

What I've feared the most actually happened. I've got the film roll back from processing yesterday and all 30 exposure starting from number 6 are black. Basically, I didn't loaded the film properly when I transfered it from one camera to another so the film didn't moved forward when I rewinded the camera after each shot. I've got close to nothing to show for January. This pretty settle the fate of this diary, if I've got nothing to show, I shall just ended it right here. I've failed.
On the top of that, one of my two Canonet died on me this weekend. And I'm not sure I want to dedicate the working one to the diary.

Yo.
Do whatever you want and feel like doing.
You wanna quit ? Quit.
But...
My 2 cents thought about this is that, as much as frustrating what happened to you can be, there is still 11 months, 12 if you do it until February 2008. Accidentally failing on the first month does not mean the death of the project.
So, up to you...

Hi all,

It looks like we're going to have a February update after all. Yay!
The film properly locked itself after I've shooted the last exposure yesterday. Although, I was so happy about it, that I've almost open the camera before rewinding the film back in the cartridge. So finally here it is, the first photos update for 2007 and it is for the month of February (read above to know the story about what happen to January).

28 pictures, one for each day of february taken on the same roll of film (Kodak Ektachrome E200). I've to say that I'm not too happy about those picture. I'm not looking for an excuse but I'm pretty sure that the lab fucked up the processing. You see, I've pushed the film to 400iso instead of 200iso. I told the guys at the lap the roll was pushed but I feel like they've just processed the film as 200iso. The pictures are seriously dark (underexposed) except for a few ones. I've check the receipt and I can see that charged me for only 2 pushed processing when I've drop 3 pushed film.
Also, I've never seen such a bad scanning. Most of the darker picture have so much noises on them, it took me ages to try fixing them. I'm pretty sure that their scanner was set to automatic level and gamma correction. The best way mess the scanning of underexposed photos.
I really need to find a better place to process my film. Or might just start my own lab ;-)

Abyway here are the picture and some of them come with a soundtrack. Those who knows me well, knows that I always carry at least one MP3 player and that I'm listening music pretty much all the time. So everytime I took a picture and I was listening to something, I wrote down the song I was listening at that time. Under each pictures, among other informations, you'll find a link to the song. If you click on the link a new page will appear with the picture and small multimedia player that will pla the song. So don't hesitate to click on the link.

Enjoy!

Two Ducks

1/500 f5.6

I was coming out of the Jeu de Paume Gallery when I saw those two ducks. First I didn't payed much attention to them, I was busy turning on my MP3 player and adjusting the headphones on my hears. But their was something weird about those two ducks. They were both standing there with their neck stretched to the maximum, looking in the exact same directions. They were so motionless that I first though they were fake or stuffed. So I got closer and as I was getting closer I could see their breast moving up and down as they were breathing. Other than that they were not moving a feather.
I got the closer that I thought they would allow me to be from them, took my Canonet out of my bag and took this picture of them. And as soon as the shutter was released and I rewinded the camera, they took off in a split of a second and flew away.
I had this funny feeling that those two guys with theirs neck all stretched out, looking in the same direction were posing and waiting for someone to take thier picture. And as soon as I did, they left.

I very much enjoyed that ! Complete with musical drama. Leicaman ...moving swiftly and silently in the night...spots the open window, the neck stretched ducks, the rainy ladies in metro, soldat solidarity....Leicaman...think twice - shoot once...Leicaman - able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, faster than a speeding RER and more musical than musica !

Sorry the music voices are playing loud today. Seriously -a very nice monthly story. Perhaps in March Leicaman will treat us to a theme !

Hi Ted,
I was getting a little bit desperate for a comment on my February. Thanks for that.
But Leicaman is going to be Leicaless for 4 to 5 weeks as he dumbly badly loaded a film roll in it and the camera shutter curtains got locked. The has to send back to the factory to be serviced. As man at the Leica store, it'll probably no more than 5 minute to unlock the shutter but it can only be done by Leica's technition. I'm not going to argue.
But the man from the Leica store was very kind and lend me a used M6 for until friday so I can go shooting this week. Which was really nice from him if you consider that the day I bought the camera, he showed me 4 or 5 times how to load the camera properly.

A theme...a theme he says ?? I see an ugly theme involving canisters of film that behave badly...it is their fault see ! I know the feeling in the pit of your stomach when something like this happens...SEND IT OFF TO BE FIXED !!! YIKES - How will it survive La Poste, Fed Ex, DHL or whatever agency ?...SEND IT BY TAXI !!
I PAY !! DO IT NOW !! All these things would run through my head.

See you Monday...

Ted, you don't need to worry, I don't need to worry, the Leica store is taking care of sending the camera to be repair. And I have a receipt from that store. Told you... nothing to worry.
And a Taxi to Solms in Germany from Paris, gee! I'd rather Buy a new camera ;-)?

See you Monday (are we still having the "Meetup"?)
